Alright guys and girls, I've been playing around with webtop on my Atrix and want to put Ubuntu in chroot on my a100. Would a torial for an A500 suffice for this purpose?
Sent from my A100 using xda premium
I've thought about trying it myself but never got around to it, I would say one for the a500 would world but you may need another xorg.conf file
Let us know if you get it working and ill do the same

UBUNTU
This would be a valid solution:

I've gotten it working using Ubuntu Installer from the market. It works fairly well, I can't get my resolution sorted properly yet, but I am pleased with it!

I've got linux installer an only was able to get debian working all the ubuntu options so far won't )apt-get update( keep getting errors dealing with the repositories x.x I know nothing of debian an i have a netbook running 11.10 an rather have 11.10 running on the tablet to see how well unity really does work on it <,<
Ubuntu Installer comes with a premade image to download. Im not sure what version it js, but I am fairly certain its not 11.10...

The only ubuntu installer i know of for android is on the market an it strangely shows my a100 as uncompatible... Do i need to get a hold of the latest update avail for the tablet?
It is Ubuntu Install Guide by zpwebsites
Sent from my A100 using xda premium
I tried doing this , (not using one of the automatic installers on the market) Unfortunately it didn't work, and my guess is because our Kernel for the A100 does not support Loop Devices. (Correct me if I am wrong please) so if that's the case, we have to wait for the the bootloader to get unlocked and compile a custom Kernel with support for it.

Do any of you e4gt owners use ubuntu strictly as your OS?
I want to install this instead of windows (no point in paying for problems)
I understand there is heimsdale (spelling?) in place of Odin.
But what I'm wondering is how much more difficult is it to flash things and such to or phones?

Use Linux Mint. It's based on ubuntu so you get all the same stuff plus a better interface and a better appearance. The cinnamon build is the better one atm imo...
Also, odin/heimdill(sp?) are not necessary. I have run Linux as my os for years and haven't had any problems trying any roms... Where there's a will, there's a way.

I use Linux Mint which is a different distro than Ubuntu but built off of it. I use it as my daily OS on my laptop and love it. As far as Heimdel it's just as easy if not easier than Odin once you know how to use it.
I would suggest a dual boot system as sometimes you just need windows or in case you don't like Linux. Both distros make dual booting fairly easy. Hope this helped some. Good luck!

I use linux on 3 of my laptops.. Kubuntu us nice.. but i prefer PinguyOS.. its a modified ubuntu that i like alot more than mint. just my input
And yeah.. dual boot is the only way to go.. just somethings end up having to be done in windows...

Thanks fellas. I'll definitely be dual booting, i plan on buying another internal hd and running windows off of that.

Heimdall isn't that hard to work. And my spelling is correct

heimdall is astounding. Better than Odin. Odin is literally a piece of crap, I'm amazed that people still use it, even on Windows.
I've ran Linux/Android as my main OS for more years than I can remember. These days I use Arch Linux almost exclusively.

i dont see how odin is crap when it's done it's job correctly every time for me and a lot of other people.
I really tried to like Linux, even with the slick Mint interface, but man, all those archives and issues. Then there's wine and the programs just don't run the same as they do in Windows, just my 2 pennies....
Unbuntu 11 side-loads on our phone nicely..
Don't expect to watch any video or compress large files,
But there is some interesting software that having full Linux can bring to our phone..
It's super slow, but everything works software center and all!

Id avoid Ubuntu. After 11.04 they took alot away and force you to use Unity, that thing is horrid. Stick with Mint.

Not sure what you mean by " all those archives and issues" the learning curve can be a little steep if you've only ever used windows, but if you put the effort to learn basic Linux tasks and terminal commands Linux can be a hell of a lot easier and more useful than windows on a daily basis, additionally IMHO wine is an unnecessary crutch, there is a native linux program for most everything outside of windows based games that is 9 times out of 10 more functional and useful than the windows program you're trying to use. I guess you could say there is no iTunes, but really if you use XDA I would assume you'd be capable of flashing your I pods firmware over to the far superiour rockbox.... so to answer the op's question yes I use Linux, usually ubuntu, as my primary os, heimdall works great but I mostly use mobile Odin... I have a windows 8 and an osx partition as well, neither get much use and windows 8 does not very much impress me...

I suggest dual boot also. If you have the hardware for it, vm is more convenient. Virtualbox suits my needs a large percentage of the time.

good question op, i was just thinking of doing this myself... the complete linux install app makes it stupid easy, which was somewhat of a disappointment as i was expecting a project! not a bad thing though.. i would recommend going that route
So I've got Ubuntu 12 up and running and it's pretty good. I don't like how I have to connect through a VNC client because it makes the GUI harder to user, but I understand that its the easiest way.
Does anyone know if you can run a working Linux system in place of the Android OS? No dual boot, just Linux only.

Which instructions have you looked at? And have you tried seeing if following the Windows instructions worked? It should work about the same when running programs such as Odin or Heimdall. The hardest part will probably be finding the proper phone drivers and software that work with Linux.
Edit: If possible, try using a virtual machine in linux. Apparently some people in other forums were able to use WINE in Linux when using Windows software. (I currently use Windows so that's as much information I can give you).

I'm still sporting the koodo stock rom(too busy) rooted and a bit debloated and getting awesome battery life compared to the g2x. I'm in Canada and my carrier is wind mobile (3g/wcdma only service) on the g2x with a 1980 mah battery barely made it over 14 hours. However, this setup gives me around 24 hours uptime with approximately 3.5 hours screen on time. So once you spanking it to your like, should be good.

yeah i guess im just going to have to root, debloat and flash a diff kernel and see if the battery life improves. my main concern is tethering though. i remember once i flashed CM7 on my g2x, i had free tethering capabilities. So im hoping that will come with CM9. Not sure how stable CM10(Jellybean) is for the S2.

......dude the whole point of having a linux OS is so that you can customize it, and control its every aspect. You should not be getting a distro just because it has something preinstalled.

Maybe thats the reason you have a linux box. I have one cuz i like the freedom and power it provides. Which in turn allows for easy and awesome customization. You can customize a Window OS a great deal too. Again for me its the freedom and power. I have been using arch awhile now. A little before the glibc symlink issue. Which broke your system if you updated. So im not new to Linux nor am I wet behind the ears.
i figured i would share with someone who isnt an elitist bsd user like yourself. Who just wants a distro with everything already installed. Some people dont have the time or are just new and havent learned that much yet but want to root their phones. idk either way i thought it was cool.
the bsd in my name is actually just a coincidence, but there is a good chance of arch having heimdall. open terminal and do "pacman -Ss heimdall" you will get a result. you would then do "sudo pacman -S result" it would download and install it. There may also be a heimdall-frontend get it as well, so you can do everything with a gui. Once you have them installed run it as root, or else it won't work. Arch is an awesome distro. Never switch distros and learn.

are you really trying to school me on using pacman? lol Ive been using Arch for over a year and a half i would hope i know how to use its package managaer! i told you ive been using it since before the glibc symlink issue so i dont know what your trying to accomplish here?! i can program in a few languages too.
i asked this question cuz im new the samsung galaxy. im comkng from the g2x. Which was an awesome phone!! ive had it for 2 years and the tools to flash cwm were linux scripts. Flashing roms was as easy as downloading it then rebooting into recovery from the terminal, wiping, then flashing. So now im back at square one cuz my g2x screen broke for the 3rd time. so i figured i try something new.
on top of it my laptop hard drive crashed and i havent had the time to transfer my data from the burned out hdd to the new one. so i just run live cds. i roof for a living too. 5 days a week and have a fiance and a kid. so my freetimebisnt spent on a computer. idk where this thread is going but i got what i need to know... heimdall. yeah thanks

well heimdall doesnt seem to work no matter what i seem to do. I just want to root for now. so can someone point me in the right direction.

Use the Galaxy S2 Tool (based on Odin) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650908
T989 is the Hercules. So you should be good.
As for recovery, go with the new Twrp it is just bulletproof. CWM has some issues with some of the newer roms along with some wiping issue.
So first flash a recovery (CWM or touch) via the above tool (some older versions are included), then once you reboot to CWM /CWM touch simply flash the below TWRP recovery. It will replace the existing recovery after reboot. Make your stock nandroid with
TWRP, CWM backups are not compatible with TWRP and vice versa.

So, I decided to buy this phone to replace my crappy Motorola Xprt. Mainly because my xprt literally has 0 dev support, and is too small for my hands. Didn't need anything too fancy, so I bought the EVO 4G for 49 bucks.
Few questions I have though:
1. What is the best (iyo) ICS/JB rom for this device?
2. Is there paranoid android for this device? And if so, is it stable?
3. (Weird and oddly specific question) I had an unstable version of cm9 on my xprt, but I had a problem with viewing videos on instagram and vine.. actually they wouldn't play at all. Can anyone on a jb/ics rom confirm if they're able to video videos on one of those apps?
4. Videos in general, do they work alright?
Thanks!

Unfortunately, outside of Evervolv's 4.2.2 & 4.3 ROMs, Jellybean development on XDA for our phones has hit a lull. However, there are still a few newer (and very good) ROMs on the website below. As regards Paranoid Android, we don't have a pure, current version. The site below does have PacMan, Illusion and other variants that incorporate most, if not all of PA's features... Including Halo.

I'm an absolute scrub when it comes to Android discussions (I only just rooted my phone last night ), but out of the few ROMs I've tried, I think Kendall's JellyBread is the best. It's very sleek, very clean and runs amazingly well. You can check out her thread here if you're interested:

Good luck in your endeavors. For $47 you have an excellent phone on your hands.
What about Reloaded .500? I have been on that for awhile...I might change but then it seems like every ROM has something that doesnt work be it FFC, video, 4g etc...If you read closely PACman rom has no working USB Tether/Camcorder/FFC/4G
Eh the things that don't work don't really bother me. I don't have 4g on the phone I have now, nor do I plan to pay for it. Don't have a ffc either and it really isn't important. I can use videocam illusion for recording video and usb tether is useless to me anyway.
