have no point of reference but I did a side by side speedtest vs a Verizon GS3. Kicked Tmobiles ass 15.87mb vs 5.87Mb
I did a side by side and killed a Verizon gs3, 22 vs 10MB. So as you can see , it all depends on your area. And as for your data being slow, contact cc and have them take a closer look play your account.

T-mobile is doing a LOT of work on their networks right now. People all over have recently had intermittent problems which seem to come and go.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Due to the back hauling of fiber out to their towers. So usually when they do that, the tower getting worked on gets shut down, putting more strain on the ones around it, thus causing said issues, be it data or voice problems.

I can confirm. Live very close to the tower, usually get over 15 mb download and always have all bars of signal all the time. Every week or 10 days my signal will fluctuate up and down like a yoyo. Lots of work on surrounding towers will stress out the tower getting all the load. Bright side of this, hopefully T-Mobile will have one bad ass LTE and HSPA+ data for the customers.

I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.
Its all over thats why im switching to verizon. The worst thing is the reps act like nothings wrong

They keep saying the iphone isn't having any problems. I wonder if they are degrading android to male iphone look better. We are switching to Verizon when the contract is up.
Sprint might be doing work in your area. See map here: https://network.sprint.com/

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones

Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

When I go within 100ft of the tower I use in my home in Toledo I get full signal strength and peek speeds of 100 kbps, sprint really needs to get on that. Then again in Cleveland I get 1mbit+.
Sprints network is really unstable right now so its probably not the best time to sign a contract with them if you use a lot of data.

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.

I was up in Michigan City last month for 4 days (Mother in Law and Wife's Grandma live there) and was in and around Hammond and Valpo as well. I got much better speeds than that with my EG4T. The 3G in MC was actually superior to the 3G down here in DFW, although they don't seem to have 4G...
I was running Caulkin's 1.0 at the time, and it was pretty nice up there.

Did you hit 11GB through phone usage or through tethering? My home internet provider in my building went out of business so I had to start tethering and I hit 18GB of 4G. From what I understand, Sprint doesn't care as long as you aren't roaming. Before tethering, I would go through about 3-4GB a month.

300GB? I think that would be a pretty good reason on their part. He's using 20-30X the amount of data the average data hog here uses (or admits to using). And that's 300X the amount of data the average user (people who live in the 21st century and have wifi at home) uses.
That's obnoxious even compared to other abusers!
Other than illegally downloading warez, I can' think of a single legitimate way a normal person could go through that much bandwidth. Even streaming Netflix... that's 300+ movies (from my experience watching data use on the phone). The hogs here who stream Pandora every day even stay in the low 2 digits of data use.
That idiot friend deserves to get booted!
I hit around 1.3GB last month on 4G (Usage reset yesterday). And I used around a Gig or so on 3G. Im typically always on Wifi though, so my data isnt as high as it would be if it werent for me using Wifi. I get AWESOME 4G coverage at my apartment too
used +8gbs of 4g on primary line this past month, streaming like crazy....bought nba league pass, only use google cloud music for music and heavy surfing. im not worried about overages, ive got a smarthphone to use not stare at.
as for that 300gb claim....id say youre friend is just a douche and didnt even come close to that. i doubt you could even pull 300 gigs of data in a month due to poor sprint coverage/service
The most I ever used was 6.5 gigs and that's because I was testing this torrentlt client on my phone. Lol I downloaded the entire Naruto series.

I think you're good...a lot of us have hit high numbers for one reason or another and if you actually have a good signal and utilize your phone for streaming music and uploading pics, etc its not hard to hit a higher number.
When I moved to a new place a few months ago I tethered my revue and two laptops for a couple of weeks until I had broadband hooked up and hit 48 gigs...no letters in the mail. I get great 4G at home and 3G for that matter and average around 10 gigs a month combined usage. Sprint is great if you're in a strong signal area.
I don't understand why a home ISP internet provider can give you all the data you want but cell companies decided to cap people and offer tiered plans. It is not like it cost them more if I use 2 gigs or 4 gigs of data.
Is is a real shame that mobile providers took this direction with data. Getting anything more then the 2 or 3 gig plan just makes your cell phone bill an outrages unaffordable price.
Sprint is great that they still offer unlimited data but when you are using 3G and getting 40kbs what is the point? How could Sprint have ever let there network get this bad. When I had the EVO 4G and I never needed to turn of 4G. Since it killed the battery within hours I was able to use 3G for anything I wanted to without a problem.
Now, if you are not in a 4G area, you phone is almost useless as far as data is concerened. Streaming anything is almost near impossible.
If Sprint actually fixes their network and has LTE 2 years from now I am sure they will not be unlimited either. If they were to tier now, why would anyone in their right mind stay with them? Like Sprint took everything else away from their customers, unlimited data will be next. They just need a network that they can pull that BS on...
Depends on who your ISP is.
ATT has a 100gb limit, and I get a lousy 2.5mbs for $38 month...
Comcast has a 250gb limit.

There may not be a direct monetary cost, but bandwidth being consumed by one user is bandwidth unavailable for other users to use; it is a rival resource. Users who use a large amount of data place a higher burden on the network than users who use a typical amount and cause data speeds for these users to be lower than they would be otherwise. This reduction in service quality experienced by other users could cause them to leave the network and cost the service provider.

DSL users are capped at 150GB, U-Verse has no cap since AT&T can't distinguish the TV usage from actual internet usage, so they don't cap that at all.

Switched to the truly unlimited 4G data plan on the 5th. Everything was fine up until last night. I've gone from having an awesome connection to the T-Mobile network 90ms Ping, 25MB Down, 4MB up. To a 1000MS ping, 0.05MB Down/Up.
I called T-Mobile verified my unlimited was good and there was no throttle in place. I'm not even at 10GB yet. What could possibly be going on that could cause this? I'm rooted, Stock Rom, UVALH2.
Edit - Sometimes when I run Speed Test it picks me up in New York, Nebraska, Arkansas.. Really weird!
Working fine here in 60657

Nope. I went to a buddies place over in East Dundee (60118) and my speeds were back to normal. It has to be the tower in my area is having problems? If I call T-Mobile shouldn't they know if they have a tower experiencing problems?
Hmm..
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It appears there is a problem with three of the towers in my area. 84 other people have already called in and they said an engineering team is working on it. I've been on these 56k speeds for the past two days already going on a third. Should I tell them I want my data fee covered for the month or what?
Anyways just glad it's their network and not my phone. Wonder how long this will take.

Call T-Mobile. When the prompt asks you why you're calling say Tech Support. Then tell the rep that in the past few days your data speeds have been 56K like. You know it's not your phone. They will then check the towers in your area and see if there are any engineering tickets/requests active. When I called after some searching the guy told me I was the 85th person in my area to call in and that there was an engineering ticket active. They said it could take up to 72 hours for it to be fixed. Tonight will mark 72 hours so we will see what happens.
I know if I leave my house and drive about 15 miles to a buddies house which runs off of different towers my speeds are normal and everything is fine. Something to do with the antennas in my area.
I'm getting what I think is normal in this area, not in my normal neighborhood so I cant really test any more. But it's at 2.5 so I'm happy for now.

Called T-Mobile a little while ago to see if their engineers had located the problem yet and if there was a solid ETA... Nothing so far the ticket has yet to be updated. She said things like this can take up to a week to get resolved and begged for my patience.
They offered me a $10 credit for the downtime. Here's my real question. Lets say this issue is not resolved within a week. Am I able to get out of my contract due to the fact I can't get my promised data connection at my residence?
Input?

Lol, no. I was in an area the coverage map rated as the best for voice and HSPA. I received only EDGE in my apartment and had frequent signal drops. I called T-Mobile every other day for three weeks. They won't do anything for you because the coverage map says you have service, and the engineers were working on a fix ASAP.
It takes a minute to be unthrottled

So I recently switched from Sprint to Tmo. And so far I can say the speeds are at least 3x faster if not more. Which is great! The only thing is I'm not used to a data limit so I'm scared to even use data if I can't find wifi. But I forced myself to use pandora and memedroid with some mild app downloading and before I started using my hotspot, I managed to hit 700mb with 1-2 weeks left in my cycle. So 2.5gb is pretty good imo data and price wise.
Then, as I was celebrating my birthday yesterday at my friends house, I decided to try out my hotspot (Stock rom) and watch some netflix. Watched ONE episode of south park and pushed my data to around 1.1gb. Figuring I was just about at the end of my cycle, and wanting to see how bad throttling could be, I decided to use it again and stream a comedy special and reached within about 45 minutes.
Dear god I had no idea throttling could be so terrible. I was figuring 3g speeds comparable to sprints network (Which is still somewhat terrible) but this 2g is HORRENDOUS! 15kb just makes me want to cry. I'm amazed we don't even get dial-up speeds. But at least they don't charge overages which is nice, so no real complaints.
Answer me this though, I've seen a few threads mentioning unrestricted hotspots and came across this thread which talks about evading the throttle. Is this still possible; and what exactly does it mean to unrestrict the hotspot? Say I upgrade to unlimited, I remember hearing it throttles after like 5-10gb even with unlimited, is this true?

I'm using jovy's Darthstalker ROM and the unrestricted hotspot is still working great. And if you have the truly unlimited data plan they do not throttle you at all, since switching to it back in September I have routinely hit 20-30 GB a month and not been slowed down.
I've used 7.1gb of my unlimited plan and no throttle, also I've used over 10gb and no throttle either.. As far as the hotspot, I think it still works but I've read people saying that no matter what you do they will eventually find out and block the hotspot access
