I read through few posts about people being able to claim their warranty even after unlocking their bootloader , now these people had almost the same problem ..there screen wouldn't display anything or their phone wouldn't boot up at all. So I guess HTC won't check for your warranty if your phone is not booting up ...they'll just check your bill and see if its under warranty and do it for free ...

Well I've seen people get away with this, but I still darent unlock/root.
Because I know what my luck is like and I would be the only one that doesn't get repaired !!
It took me 4 weeks to pluck up the courage to unlock my phone and I'm glad I did. I now have no warrenty but I do have an awesome phone.
Also I heard that if your phone is completely dead there is no way to tell if the phone is unlocked or not. So there is a reasonable chance you'll get your phone replaced.

lol sounds like a good plan, now everyone who needs repair will burn it's phone and get new replacement under warranty

Yeah I've been debating for about 3 weeks now, would you really say its worth it?
What ROM you using?
And, about the warranty, what does completely dead mean?
Not booting?
Or bricked etc?

I am using Cyanogen Domination 10. It is still work in progress but it stable enough for everyday use. I would also say if you do unlock your phone try roms other as well because they all offer something different.
Dead as in bricked, although if you follow unlock steps carefully there is little chance of bricking your phone
I unlocked my phone the day I bought it ... I'm not regretting it all but the little yellow spot in the bottom left corner is annoying sometimes ..

lets just make this clear, its certainly posted here already in many many threads...
if you read the unlocking stuff properly on the htc website, it clearly says that the warranty will be invalid for anything caused by unlocking the bootloader
so if you have a blatant hardware problem, ie the wifi antenna problem, they still have to repair it foc
so basically, unless you brick your device, you still have a warranty.
they might try insisting on replacing the main board for a cost, which i've heard quite often. the wifi fix requires changing the main board anyway, so for at least that problem, they shouldn't charge to fix.
still, it does depend on the type of problem as to whether you could convince them not to change the main board..

I have sent it back to clove.co.uk
They told me that HTC has some doubts about free of charge repairing.

please do..as your story seems quite interesting now. hopefully they will replace it for you but kinda makes you think twice before unlocking it now kinda makes me sad hearing that..i really do hope there is an S-OFF exploit cause if there is not i maybe just maybe might end up selling this and going back to either s2 or buy the s3 when that comes out and hopefully that bootloader will be unlocked...i am really loving my phone but things on this side seem so complicated compare to the s2 one
The htcdev unlock shouldn't affect your hardware warranty but it is worded so that in theory anything could be blamed on you altering the firmware. It would be daft if they do end up refusing to fix your phone for free as it is obviously nothing to do with the unlock.

Let's wait and see whether all the hype about HTC opening the bootloader is just marketing or has some sense. After all, I didn't alter anything hardware so if - say - some button or screen ceases to function or doesn't do it properly, why shouldn't warranty be valid??
The thing with the yellow point is well known. At least in Germany. Had a One X that had the same yellow spot on the left bottom of the display too.
Brought it back to the shop (Saturn) and get a complete new one.
Hopefully you get a new one, too!
Forget to mention that I've didn't unlock it.

The way HTC word it on htcdev is that because you're not using official validated firmware then you might have had faulty firmware which damaged hardware e.g. it was overheating but the firmware somehow managed to ignore it and continue.
It depends on what is faulty I guess. If the micro USB socket breaks then it is obviously nothing that could be caused by firmware.
The yellowish spot is probably the glue they used to stick the LCD to the touchscreen. There are quite a few mentions of similar spots on this forum. Was it there when you first got the phone?
Yes it was there but it went unnoticed due to excess of enthusiasm in going through each and every menu and too much work to take care of small details. but then, with time, I got aware of the yellow spot.
Clove also noticed it and sent the phone to HTC.
I avoided unlocking at HTCDev as I'd like to keep my warranty, so I will be waiting for Revolutionary

HTC is entitled to some form of protection. If you overclock and fry your CPU they shouldn't have to eat the cost. Friends who unlocked international phones have gotten h/w (display, build issues, etc.) related warranty service from HTC with no hassle.
Here's their policy:

One one side - an entirely software based brick: user should pay. On the other side, failed hardware: manufacturer should pay. In between there may be differences of opinion!

I have also sent my phone in for a yellow spot. Phone was rooted on HTC dev. Right now the status is "In Repair". So we will see what they say. I did flash back to stock before sending it in.
i rooted my HOX also. after 2 weeks i noticed the wifi fault AND a yellow spot. relocked it and send it in for repair. returned the phone a few weeks later. Still had a wifi issue, but now i don't get warranty for their faulty repair the first time because they saw is was *relocked*
after a few angry phone calls i decided to fix it my self

My status just changed to "REPAIR COMPLETE". So i think i am in the clear.
I think due to a bad install of a rom on my part the phone would not charge.I had used Htcdev to unlock but reset to facory settings before sending it back to HTC for repair.I have been told its been repaired and on its way back to me.

And now it shows the phone is being returned. So looks like they didn't care/check that my phone was "relocked".
UPS is set to drop it off tonight, but i am away on business so won't be able to report back on the quality until this weekend.

Just got my One X today after coming from the Galaxy Nexus.
I normaly switch phones every 3-4 month`s (i get bored fast ) and rooted most of them.
Read about rooting the one x and it scares me that the loss of warranty by unlocking the bootloader through htcdev is permanent. It`s stupid imo that flashing an official RUU doesn`t restore the warranty, so i`ll guess i will not root this one.
But that said i must say it is quite fast and sense feels lighter and less prominent than pervious versions.
Also the screen-on time is quite impressive, almost 3 hours already and 30 % power left.
Hope to enjoy it while it lasts and hope be learning from you guys on this forum

unlock and you are still covered. i have send my phone in for repairs and it is unlocked. hardware issues you are covered for example if the screen starts coming off all of a sudden you are covered and etc. but say you overclocked your phone and the motherboard got fried then you are on your own. so basically here it goes
you are covered for hardware issues but anything software related that you might have flashed upon the phone you are not covered

I need root with every new phone, even if It's just restore my titanium backup from the previous phone. I don't think It's fair I should loose warranty because of that.

if you actually read my post just above it states that only hardware related issues your warranty will be intact if you was to unlock the bootloader through HTC dev and there are threads already here regarding this issue if you actually took the time to search regarding what you are moaning about. But hey what do i care if you unlock your phone or not.

I'm a first time Android user. I was an iPhone guy. Only last August that I decided to go Android since it gives more freedom to its users. So I bought an HTC One X and I extremely enjoyed using it for the last 2 months. But not until now.
Before I state the problem, let me clear things first: I'm not a heavy user. I didn't root my phone because I don't know how to.
So, here's the problem:
I was just playing Subway Surfers when my phone suddenly turned off. It booted up again but when it shows the HTC logo, it says "this build is for development purposes only..." all in red color (which looks really scary - well, atleast for me)
After that, It showed the bootloader (as my friend says), and it shows: "Security warning" and "locked" words above. My friend got it work again by doing Factory Reset in HBoot. My OneX went back to normal but suddenly turned off again and booted in bootloader. Again, my friend got it working again by doing the first thing he did. After that, all things seems good (except I lost all my data). But there's a popping error message all the time. What I did was I decided to do a Factory Reset again, but this time, through the Settings. After that, the error message is not showing up, and I started installing all my apps again. But after a day, while playing Subway Surfers, my OneX suddenly turned off again, but this time, won't turn on anymore.
I tried to read tutorials and articles about One X not turning on. But I really don't understand many terms that are included in troubleshooting the handset. So, I decided to take it to HTC Philippines service center for repair since I know they know what should be done. After 3 days, I called them and said that my device needed a replacement for the mainboard/mother board and the battery.
I don't have a warranty and didn't do anything on the phone. I did dropped it once but that was a month ago and approximately 2-3 feet only. I didn't root my phone or any other kind of software tweaking.
Mainboard and battery costs too much, and I can't afford that. I'm sorry for posting all these here, but I don't have any other choice. I don't know where to seek help.

I bought it in an online store and they said it has no warranty.
Without a warranty there isn't much you can do.
Contact the regional HTC service centre and see what they say.

I went to HTC Philippines and if my phone has warranty, they should have said it already to me and won't ask for any charges.
Is there any possible solution here? I am thinking that this could just be a software problem since I've read that HTC requires devices to change the mainboard if the phone is rooted/or stuck in bootloader. As I said earlier, I got a security warning message before my phone completely shuts down.
Phone HTC and demand a replacement/repair. Its under warranty.
Does it say locked or relocked on the top of the bootloader screen?(out of interest).
You could also run an ruu.

It says locked. With a security warning.

Did u play subway surfer while charging? Playing game while charging could be the cause of ur blown up motherboard and battery. It happens to my notebook.

Im 14 years old and I have flashes ruu like 3 times... It's very easy and no chances of bricking. Good luck
First off my device is unlocked and rooted but that is it and I did that weeks and weeks ago when the latest android patch came out.
It has been working fine but I had a sleep over with the kids last weekend and they like to play with it as usual. After they left, hours later I noticed the device showing the google start screen like it was stuck there. I tried to get it into the boot loader or recovery and nothing. Now it appears dead, no lights, etc.
I tried charging and tried using the volume and power thing, etc to no avail. When connected to the pc I am gettng the dreaded QHSUSB_Dload thing.
#First question is there a fix for this? I have searched every where and have yet to find anything substancial other than the volume thing which is not working.
# second question is can I rma this or will it not be accepted due to it being rooted? There is no way I can bring it back to stock without accessing the bootloader.
#last question - If I cannot rms it can I take it apart and do something to repair it or is there anything I can do?

What I have to lose is money. If I RMA it is possible for Google to keep the payment and I'm not about to buy another unit because one fails through nothing I did.

I understand that, but right now you have a $200 paper weight. So why not gamble on the s/h for the rma?
I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying.
Google basically makes you pay for a replacement. Upon inspection they refund the money. If they do not refund the money then I am out the full cost.
I could find that reasonable if I was playing around or something but I have kept my devices all stock ever since the latest version came out except for unlocking and rooting.
I guess the other option would be to find someone to do a jtag repair and I could only find one guy and I don't think he touches Nexus 7s. Not sure though but waiting for him to reply. This sucks! My device was perfect and I loved it.Great battery, no touch screen issues. Not a single issue and then all of a sudden this. i really cannot understand what caused it.

I gotcha. I thought you paid to send it back & then you had the option to pay to fix it if it wasn't covered by warranty.
That could be through Asus directly but not sure.
I think though if they go to repair it they will see the unlocked boot loader. That voids the warranty

If it was mine I would take the back cover off and unplug the battery and let it sit for ~5 min. If there is a physical reset plug then push that in a couple times.

Yeah, if you know an RMA is a very very very poor shot / don't want to try it. I guess a tear down is your second best bet.
You should check out Adam Outler's tear down videos if you feel you might be able to take this on. I'll link Outler's videos below. They MAY help you in deciding if you want to go through with it (and what you may expect to see).

I finally got an email back from those guys that do Jtag repairs and he said it was a hardware issue but I am not sure if he understood my issue.
I do not think taking it apart and unplugging the battery will work here if the bootloader is corrupt. I am going to try to let the battery go completely dead though and then try to do the volume/power key thing to see if there is any chance.
I do not know much about this but what I read is that if the bootloader is stopped somehow while loading it can become corrupt in some cases and you cannot do anything without it and there is a device specific key involved. That is why only someone with some specific software can fix it. I thought this key as called Jtag but again, I do not know much about this. The Jtag guy said it was hardware.
Man, I have an Hp touchpad that I got years ago. I installed Android on it years ago and have it overclocked it to over 1700mhz and that thing is still going strong. The kids even dropped it and it has a crack in the screen and it still will not die. Here I have a Nexus only a few months old fully stock except for root and unlock and it is dead. Kills me especially after the way I always stand up for the Nexus line. Still loving my Nexus 4 though and it is well over a year old. Oh well, if that one goes like this one I am jumping off a high bridge. :laugh:

I am confused as to why you are so sure what is wrong with it, how do you know the bootloader is corrupt if you claim no wrong doing. Also technically speaking you did do something to begin with, you knew full well that you would be voiding the warranty by rooting and installing a custom recovery. More than likely if kids messing with it actually did end up with it how it is now they probably accepted an OTA and it corrupted the boot, on the LG G2 they have figured out how to delete the FOTA information that it continuously tries to boot from and return normal boot sequence.
But I reiterate you cannot blame this on anyone but yourself right now, being angry with ASUS or the kids will do you no good. You knowingly voided your warranty now it is time to put your nose down and see if you can fix it, there are a lot of resources here to do such.

First off, I am not sure what is wrong with it which is why I am posting here. I stated numerous times that I do not know much about this.
And yes, I know this that rooting and unlocking voids the warranty. I also know that it is my fault for doing it but I have been doing it for around 3 years now and have used various roms and kernals in the paqs and have never had an issue. Perhaps it is a hardware issue. I just do not think this issue was caused by me.
In terms of the kids playing with the device. They play games, things like that. The desktop is locked and they have no access to settings or anything. When I said messing with it I just meant playing games though sometimes they open new games and leave the old ones running. I do not know how that would cause this.
There was no ota or update.
I am not sure what you are saying about LG.
And again, I am not angry with Google or Asus. My point was that this issue was most likely not caused due to rooting or unlocking and an ota would not cause a dhsusb issue even if it did go bad.Lets try to remember that nearly everyone here roots, unlockes and installs roms, etc. I have done so as well but not on this device. This one I wanted to keep pretty much vanilla but I wanted to be able to use Titanium back up, etc. And also, I rooted and unlocked months ago when I first got the device and had to root again when the latest version came out which was awhile ago.
In terms of fixing I have not found a solution for this. I do not know if it is a hardware issue or a software issue. That is why I am posting here. I am looking for some information from people who know this stuff. I know nothing but what I have read and so far I have read many different things. I am here to learn.
OK so here is what I meant with the G2..
I had a stock/rooted/TWRP G2 and half asleep accepted an OTA Update, when it does this it downloads the update into a partition that the device checks before booting. Because I had the custom recovery obviously the update failed but it left that code in the boot partition that would now allow me to even get into download mode. I am not sure if this would be the same problem or how to go about fixing it because of the device difference, but maybe it could help? I didn't mean to come off as a ****, just far too many people like to get into their devices and void the warranty then blame everyone else.
It is really not difficult to pull the back cover off and unplug the battery, I suggest doing this it could very well help just be careful not to crack the back while pulling it off, a credit card/ID and a butter knife should do the trick without leaving marks.

So I got my moto Z2 force 6mo ago at t-mobile rooted, TWRP, stock rom. No problems at till the screen has pretty bad burn in at the top and bottom of the screen. So Motorola is going to replace my phone with very little effort on my part trying to encourage them. Now I have a problem once I unroot and go back to stock and lock bootloader there's this software change screen. My question is if I send it in will they still replace it or not. I don't want to waste my time if they will not. So if anyone has tried please let me know. I all ready got the shipping lable so I'm kinda on a time crunch. Oh yeah the only thing they ask is if there was liquid damage or if the phone was damaged in a drop. Thanks Guys.b
The second you unlock your bootloader your warranty is voided, so if your trying to get it repaired using warranty it's not going to happen. Relocking your bootloader doesn't make your warranty valid again.
asislife20 is right. Only thing I think could happen is if Motorola/Lenovo act like HTC and see it as a hardware defect and still replace it. I was lucky and was able to warranty out my unlocked M7 due to it having a known hardware defect. Burn in is a grey area at best since I don't know many people who have it. My Z2 has been in service for over a year and doesn't have any burning.
Most of the time companies will know if it is a warranty due to unlocking (like breaking your partition table) or hardware (like the purple camera issue on the M7). Hardware defects are usually warrantied. I'd call them back and make sure
Well I FedEx it today so I will know in a few days. They gave me the option to send me a new one then after I got it I could send mine back but they were going to put a 500$ hold on my account but I opted to send it first then get the replacement once they get my old one. The root has nothing to do with screen burn anyhow. It's a great phone for power and it's not a Samsung or Apple, everyone I know has sold out to those two it's sad there are much better phones out there but most people are to goofy to try them out.

I have had motorola replace a phone even tho I had previously unlocked the bootloader I didnt bother to relock it since they already know its been unlocked, got a new phone anyway
The repair order online says exchange and they sent me an email saying that the problem was resolved. so its looking good. I just want my phone back this Honor 6x doesn't cutting it.
The sent me a new Moto z2 force today. No questions asked in the end. Took 7 days but there's nothing like a new phone to break in. Thanks for the responses.
