[Q] Running windows OS on EVO 4G? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not Windows mobile.
Is it possible to put windows on the phone? Has such development ever taken place? Pop in a hdmi cable to use a monitor, bluetooth keyboard, and you have a full pc.
Is this plausible?

Nope not at all
XDA Moderator

Windows 8 will be the first version of Windows able to run on the ARM architecture, and even then I'm sure it won't run on an EVO.
You could probably get Win95 running within DosBox though...haha

They had it running on the 3D, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459153

Read some of the thread and it looks like this does in fact work on the og evo. May give this a try when I upgrade. Good find.

This looks like fun, I'd totally do that

Won't it be impossible due to Microsoft patenting and TradeMarking their stuff?

well ubuntu is apparently making it to ARM type devices (that have dual cores and up) using the HDMI cable to monitor method. not talking ubuntu one its full on ubuntu+the phone bits.

I think natively the only one they've gotten is 3.1 lol

Windows Phone 7

I don't know if this is the right place to put this so mods move it if necessary please.
Something got me thinking today "What if I could dual boot my Evo with Windows Phone 7 and Android?". I think that would make it the ultimate phone. The HD2 can run windows and android so why not the Evo also.
this is already released. there is a android 3.0/windows 7 combo rom running at 2ghz with pretty much everything working
I'm sure you can, I doubt developers who use their time on making it though
Edit: (post above) I stand corrected

Running haret.exe within windows to boot linux to launch android can be done...
As far as i know there is no way to do the similar on andoid to launch windows mobile.
that is why most windows mobile phones can get a port to android and not android to windows mobile.

That's just because nobody has any interest in putting WinMo 6.5 on their Android phone... WP7 on the other hand may be worth the work.

Considering that some WP7 devices will most likely use Snapdragon it really shouldn't be terribly difficult to do - but yes, it would be illegal.
Actually, it would not be illegal, as of yesterday.

no, it would still be illegal because you did not obtain the microsoft portion of the software legally. To be protected under the DMCA changes made yesterday you would have to legally own the software, then it would be ok

[Q] Windows Mobile 7 on HTC Desire Z

Hello all,
I have just recently purchased a HTC desire z, therfore i have become a big fan (already linux geek) of android. However with windows mobile 7 phones recently released on the market i would like to know if anyones working or done a dual boot feature on the desire series with android and windows mobile 7?
ANY help would be amazing and thanks you
Impossible. Especially since there is no WM7. Windows Phone 7 on the other hand will be difficult if anything since there is no source.

Doesn't the Treo have some sort of relation to a WM phone?
If anything will get WP7, it'll be the Desire HD. With it being such a close relation and all.

This can't be true since the hardware is WP7 compatible.
My question is WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO?.
If it's to try the new OS, just go to your local dealer and play with there's for about 10 minutes, which is about how long it will take to play with all the features it comes with.
Thanks for all replies,
obviously windows mobile 7 and the desire seriers are all new products and its mostly correct that the desire hardware is compatible, this hopefully is going to be something that will be done sometime in the new year by a very clever professional programer.
so please update if you hear that someone is working on this.
the reason i want WM7 on my htc desire is because currently im iphone programming, next i will be java programming then lastly wm7 programming if all goes to plan.
The htc hd2 isnt suported for a update since it doesnt have the three hardware buttons required for wp7...im with everyone else in this thread i doubt it will get ported to android..i mean it would be nice to dual boot into wp7 but i doubt it will happen...theres not many devs for the desire z right now..well in comparison to the desire and the hero...lets just hope it may may may may happen

Also for Xbox Live and various other exclusive features. Plus it's just part of getting the most from our phones. I'd love to dual-boot and get the best of both worlds.

From what I understand, the version of WP7 that runs on the HD2 can't access any of the Live services at the moment because it hasn't got the necessary certificate. This is likely to be another barrier to this sort of thing, though I imagine someone will get over that in time.

i have had various Android smart phones in the last few Years, rooted and installed MANY many m-a-n-y ROMs and launchers. I was amazed with the 'LAUNCHER7' launcher that does not require root access. How ever, it is not the genuine Windows 7 mobile, it is the closest thing to it. It even has the 'live' tiles that you see so many times.
Go to the Android market, and search for Launcher7. I don't want to sound like an advertisement, but the author has done a good job on how it looks and feels. It even has the little fly in and out animations when you select a certain tile.
I doubt anybody even wants a wp7 port to make it worth the devs time to make it. just let that junk go... like someone else said use the launcher7 or better yet buy a windows phone! I did and took it back within two hours! Maybe if u never used a smartphone u could lke it, but anyone who is used to the freedom of android could ever backstep into that poop.

Exactly and this being said how would an Android device such as the Desire Z be able to support the Windows Mobile 7 Apps? On the other hand they have a home launcher in the market that changes your home interface to look exactly like the HTC HD7. You should check it out! Hope I helped a bit

I doubt if there were emulator that could emulate a windows 7 phone it would not be able to run movies or much in that matter. The processing power to emulate a WP7 phone would drastically slow down the G2 even over clocked.
If we are talking about WM6... i would kind of like to see that... but wouldn't use it as a daily driver.

[Q] Developing from my phone?

Developing for android seems like it works the best when you are using ubuntu. Since you can boot ubuntu from the phones, shouldn't it be possible to write the software on the phone, from ubuntu? Or is it too restricted?

I was thinking about just using the built-in otg support and getting a usb hub so I could plug in a keyboard and mouse. And probably like a hard drive or something. But technically it should be possible right?
umm considering you wouldn't have enough ram to compile a build
Why not just dual boot your machine and still keep the luxury of a large display to work with lol

Windows 8

My mind is a complex and weird thing and I was just thinking windows 8 has a version to run on ARM CPUs so... I'm sure that it would require soff but do you think it is possible?

No expert, however I think this is pretty much the same as WP7 on our devices, which so far has never been done.
Suppose they did get Linux running, but Android is built on Linux right

that would be nice..then another thing we could stick the finger to those on the S3 side hehe be nice if we could try a different OS on this beast of a phone
Its not that it cant be done, its because windows is licensed and not open like android/Linux....
So for windows to come onto other devices you would A. need to hack it witch XDA dont support or B. each and every person who installs said rom would have to buy the license key.
Yeah, and Windows for ARM isn't going to be sold retail, only pre-installed with the device.. And drivers and such I guess won't work like regualar windows, just so they can avoid things like this.. But once it's released we will know more. It can probably be done on a completely open device, because a bootloader change is probably needed in the first place, but that can probably be taken from a tegra 3 windows tablet which I bet is coming. Well, I guess time will tell.
ohhh pleasee windows 8

Windows 8 on galaxy note

good morning all
Is it possible to put Windows 8 on a galaxy note?
I've read somwhere that this can be done.
Thanks
Windows 8 NO, It's impossible because It is an INTEL PLATAFORM
I have heard something about Windows 8 RT,
But it was also improbable for some reason I don't remember...

One of the main reasons its windows it's closed source so you can not develope a kernel able to work with it.

Theres info about it on website - techworld and other sites that the Galaxy Note II has it installed?
There can't be much difference between a Note mk1 and mk2 ?

I think they're getting their phones mixed up. The note 2 will not run windows phone 8. The ATIV S is their windows phone 8 phone... They were both announced the same day, so that's probably where the confusion is coming from.

It's ludicrous because all the other OS' you mention there are MOBILE OS'; the OP's talking about Windows 8 which is a desktop OS. Did you ever get your HD2 to boot Windows XP? Or OSX? Presumably not!
And that aside, if someone's read something they want to ask about then why not link to the article in question somewhere in the thread? To turn up and ramble on about some nonsense they've 'read somewhere' is useless and until it's at all substantiated then I'm going to treat it as such.
And all that aside again; seriously? Windows 8 on an Android phone that hasn't even been released yet? Why are we even taking this seriously at all?

Highly doubt it, it's faster and better than 7. Ignore Metro, and you have 7 but just better. But Win8 is impossible, Windows RT may be possible but highly unlikely.

I used to want a small Windows-XP/Vista/7 based phone that could idealy do everything my desktop/laptop could do. However, as I looked into it further, I realized it just wasn't an optimum OS to have on a phone type platform (even if it was possible).
Even on my Sony Vaio UX which had a similar sized screen as the Note 2, programs were just too difficult to navigate and use due to their design being model for a larger landscape. Also, the Windows Desktop OS's are resource-hungry, and do not utlize hardware efficiently enough to run smoothly on a phone.
Still it would be fun to do, just to say it can be done.

all those devices you mentioned came with windows mobile.
because windows(all versions) is closed source it's incredibly hard to get it on a device that didn't originally have a version of windows.
android has the advantage of being open source so it's much easier to port drivers from other devices to it, and to even write completely new drivers.
but even then it's not an easy task.
Wish it was possible but sadly Microsoft does not allow to. If there was a option of Dual OS Bootup then it would have been awesome.
