[Q] Windows Mobile 7 on HTC Desire Z - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have just recently purchased a HTC desire z, therfore i have become a big fan (already linux geek) of android. However with windows mobile 7 phones recently released on the market i would like to know if anyones working or done a dual boot feature on the desire series with android and windows mobile 7?
ANY help would be amazing and thanks you

Impossible. Especially since there is no WM7. Windows Phone 7 on the other hand will be difficult if anything since there is no source.

This being said.....i have heard that iphones can now dual boot to android or Ios. Haha

Doesn't the Treo have some sort of relation to a WM phone?
If anything will get WP7, it'll be the Desire HD. With it being such a close relation and all.

No. No Android phone will ever have WP7.

This can't be true since the hardware is WP7 compatible.
My question is WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO?.
If it's to try the new OS, just go to your local dealer and play with there's for about 10 minutes, which is about how long it will take to play with all the features it comes with.

Thanks for all replies,
obviously windows mobile 7 and the desire seriers are all new products and its mostly correct that the desire hardware is compatible, this hopefully is going to be something that will be done sometime in the new year by a very clever professional programer.
so please update if you hear that someone is working on this.
the reason i want WM7 on my htc desire is because currently im iphone programming, next i will be java programming then lastly wm7 programming if all goes to plan.

The htc hd2 isnt suported for a update since it doesnt have the three hardware buttons required for wp7...im with everyone else in this thread i doubt it will get ported to android..i mean it would be nice to dual boot into wp7 but i doubt it will happen...theres not many devs for the desire z right now..well in comparison to the desire and the hero...lets just hope it may may may may happen

Also for Xbox Live and various other exclusive features. Plus it's just part of getting the most from our phones. I'd love to dual-boot and get the best of both worlds.

haha yep. It's not a matter of, "WP7 is better than Android" or vice versa...it's just because we can =P

From what I understand, the version of WP7 that runs on the HD2 can't access any of the Live services at the moment because it hasn't got the necessary certificate. This is likely to be another barrier to this sort of thing, though I imagine someone will get over that in time.

i have had various Android smart phones in the last few Years, rooted and installed MANY many m-a-n-y ROMs and launchers. I was amazed with the 'LAUNCHER7' launcher that does not require root access. How ever, it is not the genuine Windows 7 mobile, it is the closest thing to it. It even has the 'live' tiles that you see so many times.
Go to the Android market, and search for Launcher7. I don't want to sound like an advertisement, but the author has done a good job on how it looks and feels. It even has the little fly in and out animations when you select a certain tile.

I doubt anybody even wants a wp7 port to make it worth the devs time to make it. just let that junk go... like someone else said use the launcher7 or better yet buy a windows phone! I did and took it back within two hours! Maybe if u never used a smartphone u could lke it, but anyone who is used to the freedom of android could ever backstep into that poop.

Exactly and this being said how would an Android device such as the Desire Z be able to support the Windows Mobile 7 Apps? On the other hand they have a home launcher in the market that changes your home interface to look exactly like the HTC HD7. You should check it out! Hope I helped a bit

I doubt if there were emulator that could emulate a windows 7 phone it would not be able to run movies or much in that matter. The processing power to emulate a WP7 phone would drastically slow down the G2 even over clocked.
If we are talking about WM6... i would kind of like to see that... but wouldn't use it as a daily driver.

Windows Phone 7

I don't know if this is the right place to put this so mods move it if necessary please.
Something got me thinking today "What if I could dual boot my Evo with Windows Phone 7 and Android?". I think that would make it the ultimate phone. The HD2 can run windows and android so why not the Evo also.
this is already released. there is a android 3.0/windows 7 combo rom running at 2ghz with pretty much everything working
I'm sure you can, I doubt developers who use their time on making it though
Edit: (post above) I stand corrected

As far as i know there is no way to do the similar on andoid to launch windows mobile.
that is why most windows mobile phones can get a port to android and not android to windows mobile.

Considering that some WP7 devices will most likely use Snapdragon it really shouldn't be terribly difficult to do - but yes, it would be illegal.
Actually, it would not be illegal, as of yesterday.

no, it would still be illegal because you did not obtain the microsoft portion of the software legally. To be protected under the DMCA changes made yesterday you would have to legally own the software, then it would be ok

[Q] HTCSense.com

HTC today lauched the Desire HD and Desire Z both of which have the new HTCSence.com services which lets you manage your device from a web browser where you can find your lost phone, clear all information from the phone and transfer information from device to device.
Anyone know if this service will be available to other users of the old HTC Sense before the new phones?

As far as I know it will be available for all customers using HTC handset with Sense capabilities.
Only HTC will know this as it was announced today...give it time and more information will come out
I'm looking forward to this if it allows for easy backups of the phone.
Anyone else read about Nokia giving out HTC survival kits? Lol.

Read about it, quite a laugh. It should have been Nokia trying to survive kits considering that Nokia is struggling to survive the mobile biz right now!

false... not everyone needs a smartphone, and for many people nokia handsets are "smart enough", or simply they need "dumb phones" that can call, call well and call for long time! Days of standby, some models even weeks... do it with a smartphone, if you can, without a nuclear portable power source... it's STILL and will be for many years the first producer, because it has a range of devices that goes from the basic device of as low as 20€, to the smartphones that have still now many people used to its GUI... an android or iphone user doubtly will return to THAT gui, btw...
From Engadget:
Eric Lin was on hand to answer the question of when this new Sense might trickle down to the classic Desire or other handsets in HTC's portfolio. Well, his answer was a non-answer: no roadmap or schedule has been set and HTC isn't ruling anything out just yet.

Hope they release it for the Desire as soon as the HD and Z launch. Oh well, I'm sure the devs will make sure that we'll have the new sense in no time!

You guys upgrading?

Hey, with all the new dual core phones out are you guys gonna upgrade from your desire? I myself would enjoy having a dual core phone but its not necessary. I may wait out this generation and go for the next. What are you guys gonna do?

I would probably wait for the nexus prime, but i guess i want something different now (aka non android based phone)...
I'm going to stick it out for another year or so until 4G handsets hit the UK. Still really happy with my Desire.

I'm attempting to get a sensation tomorrow as an upgrade without changing my price plan. However on the sensation thread there seems to be a good few issues but this seems to be the same with all new handsets.

Not really until current projects are still in development. I'm not upgrading to a device lacking a nice selection of custom roms from trusted developers. It would be Pyrrhic victory imo.
Thought I wanted to upgrade, when I first began reading about the Pyramid/Sensation... But as others have said, I am happy to sit this one out and hang on to my Desire. Just having too much fun with it at the moment
I'm going Evo 3D. Need a bit of novelty value!
Seems a decent phone too.

Not for now i have no needs for something bigger and better.
Not for now. Probably upgrading in Q1 2012 - when a bunch of new phones will come out.
Stick with desire, same reasons as given above... basically;
1) wait for the nexus whatever to see what that's like (and see if htc do a spin-off of that to see what that's like too)
2) wait for an ICS phone (HTC or not - i assume this will be part of #1 though)
3) wait for 4G
4) wait for quad core (rumour is early 2012)
5) my desire is fine as it is at the moment
I can wait till Sep/Oct to see if I am still sticking with Android or jumping ship to iPhone 5, or I could just keep the Desire and get the next-gen iPod touch instead

with apple supposedly 'stealing' features from android (notification/widgets) etc. why would you go to apple?
That said - I can see a reason to go for an iPod Touch a year or so ago... but I'm actually happy with my Android-choice and I think it's only going to get better.

Heh, because history teaches us that apple steals things then makes them better...that's the way they work. Don't get me wrong, i'm just a consumer, not a shareholder, so i'm quite fine with that
I'll be waiting till end 2012, very happy with the desire, there isn't much it still can't do.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Same here. I'm pleased with the Desire and would probably wait it out for another year until the next wave of Android phones to hit the market.
If I had to choose what I want to have after the HTC Desire, then I would choose Samsung S2 Galaxy, maybe I'll have the opportunity when my subscription runs out, which I have to march 2013 or will be an even more interesting possibility. In any case, I would not go on any other system
regards
Take away gaming - Can you think of any app that the desire cant do, that the other phones can?
I cant Desire is still right up there with the best, spec wise no but still a great phone
I've had my S2 for about a week now - at first I didn't really like how big it was and how light it feels but kept with it for a few days and grew to like it more and more - that's without even rooting it yet.
Tbh I was still perfectly happy with my desire I just had the opportunity at next to no cost so took it - now when I pick up the desire it's hard to believe I didn't notice the difference at first - everything about the S2 other than the standard keyboard is well advanced (which you would expect to be fair).
All i'll say is don't try the S2 or sensation whilst you still have your desire or you might not be able to hold on for the next gen phones!

AFAIK, as soon as analogue TV is sitched off completely later this year, the frequency spectrum will be auctioned off for 4G licences.

Windows 8

My mind is a complex and weird thing and I was just thinking windows 8 has a version to run on ARM CPUs so... I'm sure that it would require soff but do you think it is possible?

Suppose they did get Linux running, but Android is built on Linux right

that would be nice..then another thing we could stick the finger to those on the S3 side hehe be nice if we could try a different OS on this beast of a phone
Its not that it cant be done, its because windows is licensed and not open like android/Linux....
So for windows to come onto other devices you would A. need to hack it witch XDA dont support or B. each and every person who installs said rom would have to buy the license key.
Yeah, and Windows for ARM isn't going to be sold retail, only pre-installed with the device.. And drivers and such I guess won't work like regualar windows, just so they can avoid things like this.. But once it's released we will know more. It can probably be done on a completely open device, because a bootloader change is probably needed in the first place, but that can probably be taken from a tegra 3 windows tablet which I bet is coming. Well, I guess time will tell.
ohhh pleasee windows 8

He meant Windows Mobile, found in HTC Diamond or Xperia X1. And no, I don't think this kind of ROMs exists. If they would exist, I would try these! I live Windows Mobile.
huh, thought window 7.x was just a step past windows 6.x
i guess windows mobile only refers to windows phones prior 2011 and the newest are just called windows phones? semantics sorry
For WM to exist on the DZ is very tough actually. To begin with, someone has to develop a bootloader for WM, and that itself is tough, because WM is closed sourced. The bootloader has to be placed in the DZ, and cracking the boot sequence of the DZ and placing it to function correctly in the DZ is more tough :/. The most tedious part is porting the drivers for it to function well. I think you might be better off with a WM phone actually haha.. the HD2 is actually the best and the last WM phone..

Windows Mobile was discontinued in 2010 around there. Windows Phone 7 was completely rewritten based on Win CE 6, while Windows Mobile 6 was based on Win CE 5. Their completely different actually, based on coding.
Fair enough, I'll stop saying windows mobile for all windows phones I guess, never got a correction from my windows friends, thanks for the clarification

Course my general thinking is... why would you want to? The hardware isn't designed for it and to make it work would require a lot of reverse engineering even into the most basic of things like the boot loader. Android still seems like the best fit for the likes of something like the DZ/G2. (and even if you could get it to boot, what of the camera, wifi, gps, radio, physical keyboard, SD slot, LED etc )
But the battery could stay in a week or so.

why wm? i had a cellphone with wm but in compare with android that is not good .
Windows mobile was easily one of the worst phone OS's to be released, it was slow, unreliable and full of bugs. I had one of the last WM phones, the Sony Xperia X2 running win mobile 6.5 and it was a very unpleasant experience. The phone crashed at least once a day, using a stylus only was tedious and it used to love to hang for no apparent reason. The syncing capabilities for exchange were no better then my Nokia E71 which is why I upgraded to the X2 in the first place. Personally I could not wait to get rid of that POS.
Windows Phone on the other hand, could be fun to see on a DZ.

The X2 had really nice hardware, the physical qwerty was better built then the the desire z, but the OS was such a major let down, I still think that if SE released the X2 with Eclaire or Froyo it would have been a huge success.
I think WM ins't better than android... WM has too much restrictions and is so simple..

WM was terrible lol android is way better
It depends on which windows mobile. Before android was out i had an HTC Dash. I still say it was the best phone ive has so far. Had a blackberry style keyboard and WM5 or something like that. super durable and bug free.
there was no reason to root or mod it because it was completely open looked kind of like windows xp.
It would do anything it was fast enough to.
I remember the first time someone showed me their rooted doid. I was baffled, like you had to go through all that to be able to modify your root files. You meen to tell me you dont have access to all the files and settings on the phone that you own.
The second best, or if you never had a htc dash, The best. is the HD2.
released 2009 still goes pretty strong. They just dont make phones like that anymore. I dual boot an android rom and WP7.
You could run windows 95 or ubuntu if you wanted.
