I was trying to install a theme using metamorph, but when I was about to apply popup came out saying for precaution use nandroid backup.
My question is, is the nandroid and titanium are same?
Secondly when I took the back up of my user app and system data it was located in the internal sdcard, if in case anything goes wrong will I be able to restore it? I mean formatting will wipe my data or formatting is not required when we suffer problem due to metamorph?

Firstly:
Titanium Backup only backups your apps and their data.
A Nandroid Backup backups your ENTIRE ROM, EVERYTHING. You can find it in CWM Recovery under backup and restore > backup to external sdcard or backup.
SIDE NOTE: You can use Titanium Backup to restore apps and their data from Nandroid backups.
Secondly:
Wiping user data only formats /data, /cache, etc. It does NOT format the internal or external sdcard.
If anything should go wrong, Titanium backup will only help if apps are modded, not framework-res.apk or SystemUI.apk.
Make a Nandroid backup and if something goes wrong, simply restore it and everything will be back to normal.
Thanks a lot, app from the market will do? Its called online nandroid backup, is it the one?
confirming it Coz last time I installed busy box from market which I shouldn't have

If you want you can try it, but rather make one from CWM Recovery and afterwards try the app (just in case).
BTW which ROM are you using? Do you have CWM Recovery installed? Press [VOLUME_UP] + [POWER] + [HOME] and hold them in until you see CWM Recovery.
Usually BusyBox comes pre-installed with custom ROMs.

Almost the only way you can brick your phone is (1) interrupt it while flashing something, specifically a ROM or kernel (like force reset it it while in progress) or (2) do something that is known to brick devices (You will see warnings around and about the forum). In other words you really can only blame yourself for a bricked phone :fingers-crossed:
NOTE: The SuperBrick bug was also in stock firmware from Samsung - that's where it came from if I remember correctly...
Flashing CWM 6 will not (well shouldn't anyway) brick your device, provided you don't fall into case 1 above (like I did a while back ).
If you want to stay in your current Samsung degraded ROM (When you flash a Custom ROM, you will understand what I'm talking about), I guess you can use the app to make a Nandroid backup. It does, however, require BusyBox to work. Do you have BusyBox installed?; You mentioned that you have but shouldn't have earlier, but not that you still have it . If not then download this app and install it.
WHAT I RECOMMEND:
If you choose to go Custom, check my signature for the link to westcript's Resurrection Remix's (ROM) thread. There you will got most (if not all) you will ever need in one ROM .
NOTE: To flash a custom ROM you WILL need CWM. You can get it by flashing Siyah Kernel (In signature) via Odin. Also note that this would start the download counter so get yourself a usb JIG and the old i9100 bootloader.
If you want to be safe from the SuperBrick bug, flash Siyah Kernel: "no CAP_ERASE, no hardbrick" (from 4.0.1)

Apologies for the late reply. I've been away for the weekend so I don't have my computer at hand (and my phone is whith a friend.) I'll be home tonight and I'll write a guide for you.
One thing, are you using ICS or GB?
Don't worry about brinking your device - you have to really mess up to get a hard brick.
These few times I have use a BB to write on the forum will ensure my imunity from buying one.

This is for flashing Siyah Kernel. You can flash other kernels later if you want via CWM Recovery.
Hope it's clear enough - If you have any questions just ask
Please first read the guide thoroughly and download the necessary files beforehand (the links come as they are needed in the guide).
Download Odin v.1.85
Extract the package and execute Odin3 v1.85.exe
DO NOT change any setting and ensure that "Re-partition" is DESELECTED
Download Siyah Kernel for i9100 (Odin). You can find the link under "SiyahKernel S2-v..." named "DOWNLOAD TAR (for Odin)"
CAUTION: Please do not not download and flash the S3 kernel.
Back to Odin - Click on PDA and select the .tar file (SiyahKernel) you've downloaded and click OK
Put your i9100 device into 'Download Mode' by holding [POWER], [VOLUME_DOWN] and [HOME] and hold until you see the warning. Continue by pressing [VOLUME_UP]
Connect your device with the USB cable to your PC. You should see one of the boxes in Odin light up.
NOTE: If you do not see anything, ensure you have the latest drivers installed by installing the latest version of Samsung Kies
Now that everything is ready, click on "Start" and wait for it to finish.
CAUTION: DO NOT UNPLUG THE CABLE OR INTERRUPT THE DOWNLOAD!!!!!!!
Reboot. If it boots completely, congratulations! The part where you can screw up most easily is over
Download The latest edition of Resurrection Remix and move it to your internal/externel SDcard.
Reboot your device into CWM Recovery by holding [POWER], [VOLUME_UP] and [HOME] and hold until you see the menu.
Make a Nandroid backup under backup and restore - just to be safe
NOTE: If you don't want to install a custom ROM, you can stop here.
After the LOOONG wait for the backup you have to wipe data/factory reset (required to continue.)
NOTE: This will delete all your applications and application/configuration data (SMS's, Contacts(if you have google account, they should be synced and will be automatically restored),etc.) on the device. (NO DATA from either of your SDcards will be deleted)
Go to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from (internal) sdcard and select the RR package .zip you downloaded.
Confirm your selection and configure your installation of RR in Aroma installer. After RR is installed reboot the device.
That is it! Enjoy playing with the AOKP features already added and those soon to follow
If you want to remove the "YellowTriangle" at boot and reset the download counter using a USB JIG, download this old bootloader and flash it in the same way you did Siyah Kernel (also in PDA).
That should be all; will update whenever I remember something. Enjoy!!!
Thanks a lot. I'll mostly do it in the weekend (busy in my studies).
Thanks once again

Making a Nandroid backup will not wipe /data automatically; you have to "wipe data/factory reset" to do it.
Use GO Backup to backup your messages, apps and their data, etc. before you wipe the /data partition.
Google automatically keeps your contacts synced (see Settings > Accounts > Google and tap on your email address to see what is synced), but not your messages. Chances are your contacts are already backed up, but don't worry; GO Backup will do it in anyway.
thanks a lot......
m going through those process.
one more thing (may be the last thing in this thread)
how to restore through nandroid backup? by using titanium backup?

So, I guess I'll begin by saying I'm new to Android. I feel so dumb saying that, but that should clear thing up a bit, as I have no clue about what "flashing" is, or "modems," and Lord help me, because "Odin" sounds like a really funny name.
So, I do have some precedents with iOS, and I know how to work with that, but I am a total noob with Android.
So now on to the Questions, there will be a few.
1) How to Root Epic 4G Touch- How safe is it? I do know I get things like Clockwork Mod, which I believe is for loading things.
2) Installing Custom ROMs- How do I "flash" these ROMs, and what exactly is flashing? I have been looking at certain ROMs, and I guess it is down to Starburst and Caulkin's.
3) Does Rooting/Installing erase the things on my phone?- I currently have my phone loaded with things, will rooting/installing ROMs delete this? How can I create backups?
4)LoS- I heard LoS happens more often on rooted phones. Is this true?
5) Kernels- What in the same hell is this?- Any best one of these out there? What do they do?
6) Tutorials for any of these?
Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm stock, running modem( can someone tell me what this is again?) EG30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. I'll update the thread if I have any new questions. xD
1) watch and follow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
so far its kinds controversial wether its safe or not but i think it is
2)first turn off your phone second hold power and vol up and it will turn on into clockwork mode then wipe data/factory reset from menu then wipe cache from menu. choose install zip from menu then click choose from sd. then find it and click and install.
3) rooting and unrooting won't wipe data but installing roms will
4) its been shown on both rooted and unrooted phones so we really don't know.
5)DONT PLAY WITH THESE unless you know what your doing
i think they are the #1 reasons for soft bricking phones.
i don't exactly know how to explain it but they affect how your phone does what it does
whether it over clocking of voodoo color

yup im rooted and i got to say i like my phone being rooted
there are less restrictions placed and since i have had android for while now and my last phone was rooted i coulnt stand being not rooted
also i used to have los daily once or twice but it was drastically reduced after doing this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VDxEnO1tow for me

Yes it will let you install any rom that you want as long as you also insstall clockwork mod (CWM5) it also in the instructions on how to root.
No this will not mess up your activation just start flashing roms till you find one you like. please just remember to do a backup inside cwm once you are rooted you will see an option there for it. This will let you go right back to how your phones is right now.
Thank you so much! Also, last nooby question, I promise, I heard something about a Binary counter with Odin, will flashing roms/rooting with that one click root increase it? Also, what happens when it does increase?

Assuming you are using ClockWorkMod, wiping data and cache will not affect the information on your external SD card. If you select "advanced" from the CWM main menu, it will provide an option for partitioning the SD card. I haven't messed with that item, but I'm guessing it could wipe data from the external SD card.
I use the ClockWorkMod backup/recovery and it works great. I also use Titanium Backup. It will allow you to backup all of your applications and files and then restore after you've wiped everything and installed a new ROM. Titanium also requires rooting.
I started out using the Odin ROM and has some issues, so I reloaded the stock ROM and then flashed the Starburst ROM with LoST kernal. I'm having great success...great battery life and all is well.
No when you wipe data its on the phone but not pictures on the SD card. Its easy once you get going.
Email me if needed I can walk u thru.

Why don't I have an advanced option in CWM? ROM manager says that I have the latest version (5. 0.2.7)

Hi all, ive had my Tmobile samsung galaxy s2 for awhile now, and i finally decided to root it (and did it successfully) a few days ago (yay)
Ive done a bit of research for what I can do while rooted, basically after CPU setting, save battery life when idle... Simple things
But ive been meaning to try flashing a ROM. But I want to make sure i know absolutely everything needed to know to flash one. I had a samsung tmobile sidekick that I was able to root and flash Gingerclone on, but I remember it had alot of little details while installing that simply missing one could seriously screw up your phone
So first off, if anyone has had the sidekick: Is flashing/ installing roms as complex on the sgh-t989 as it is on sidekick 4g?
And secondly... After rooting my galaxy, i no longer have the stock android recovery (obviously)...... Instead it is replaced with CWM-based recovery (i think 5.0.2.2?). Is there a difference between this and Clockworkmod recovert (which should show an orange screen)?
I wanted to use ROM manager but opted not to when it told me that I "needed clockworkmod recovery installed" to work.
A little help, please?
Thanks!

Okay, great! Glad it was so simple lol.
Now about my other question... Let me explain. When I would install a custom ROM on my sidekick, i remember having to do all sorts of things like unmount system/ unmount SD card before installing and remount them after (i dont remember the exact methods... Dont quote me on that).
I know the general procedure of basically Wiping data, Wiping cache, Wiping delvik cache... But does the galaxy s2 require checking of all of that unmounting/mounting?

Flashed many roms, and no need for all that. Just make sure you wait the 10 minutes after flashing a rom.
FlaShing roms on this phone is so simple "that even a caveman can do it". I would also advise to ditch clockwork recovery and install twrp, also never use rom manager to flash roms. Just follow the op's instructions on what steps to follow to flash the rom successfully. Also no need to mount and unmount anything. Good luck.
Awesome! Thank you all for your replies, glad to here that flashing is much simpler on this phone
I really wouldnt recommend anyone rooting a sidekick as a beginner. It was my phone, i soft bricked ot my first time. Ugh, it was such a hassle! And it left me a little traumatized to try anything on this. lol!
Thanks for all the help!
Here are the genreric steps to follow to flash a rom (and yes, TWRP is recommended instead of CWM):
- place the rom zip on the internal storage
- place a copy of the radio zip that you have on the internat storage (for safety reasons)
- copy Google Apps zip if it is not included in the rom (most roms do not have these included, but the dev might provide a tuned version)
- reboot phone and enter the recovery menu (hold vol up + vol down pressed while booting)
# In recovery mode
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash gapps (if missing from the rom)
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- enjoy
If you are planning on flashing a Rom on your phone of course twrp recommended and you should definitely try Jedi mind trick x2 for the t989 Hercules. It is the most stable Rom on the Samsung galaxy s2 T989 T-Mobile. The instructions above are the best instructions you should follow. And read it carefully or you will brick your device. If using twrp follow the twrp method. And if using cwm make sure you use the extra cwm steps. It is super important you follow them unless you want a fancy paper weight.

Yeah it's because you need to update cwm, make sure you flash the correct one.. And if its booting fine then you're ok, but you should always make a backup of a working ROM if your gonna do some tinkering with your phone as a safety precaution, it really bails you out at times

I'm in the process of backing up now. Is there anything special I need to do to upgrade my cwm recovery? I've heard updating cwm recovery could result in a soft brick, is that correct?
If you have rom manager just press update cwm.
(It actually says flash cwm)
If you don't have rom manager download it from the play store.
I wouldn't worry about bricking during this process

You don't need to worry about bricking if you use ROM manager as Android_Monster stated, it will flash the correct version too

So the whole issue of installations being aborted is because of the outdated cwm.
I asked if it'll do a soft brick because I did a google search and came across multiple posts warning the use of Rom Manager. Any way to uninstall CWM and replace it with something else.
Yes to installation abortion.
To replace CWM, just flash another recovery over it.
You can just get TWRP from goomanager from the play store. Just flash it over and you'll be good to go.

Great... another error. Rooting isn't working out for me is it? Invalid MD5 sum from Goo Manager. What does that mean and what exactly can I do about it?
Nope, actually worked out after allowing download from unknown sources in security. Since I installed TWRP, can I delete the backup I made in clockworkmod recovery? I think its in my SD and its 3 GB. It titled "Clockworkmod" has folder titled "backup", then two folders "1970-04-23.05.07.43" and "1970-04-23.05.00.14".
I want to have space so that I can make a recovery using TWRP. I'm not sure if deleting this would cause more harm then not.

It worked, can I delete my Clockworkmod folder on my SD card? Its 3GB and I think its the backup I made before in clockwork. I'm afraid I might mess things up by deleting stuff, since I don't know what I'm doing. I want to delete that folder, go into TWRP and create a recovery.

It should be fine, its kind of big for just a back up though.. Make the backup with twrp first and check where it puts the back up at.. When I used 4ext recovery with my previous phone, it put the backups in the cwm folder for some reason

Thanks, you guys have been extremely helpful.
I'm about to install the rom now, I wanted your insight into if its a good rom and if I'm doing everything right.
- I've made a backup using TWRN
- Downloaded Titanium Backup, made another backup (Not sure what this will do)
- Changed Rom to AOKP Milestone 1 ( aokp_d2tmo_jb_milestone-1 )
- Downloaded Google Apps ( gapps-jb-20121212-signed )
Installation
- Run TWRN
- Going to wipe ( data/factory reset ) 3 times
- Going to wipe ( cache ) 3 times
- Select install zip from sdcard (First AOKP, then Google Apps)
- Reboot
Alright, does that look good to you? Do I have your blessings.

What's your opinion on AOKP nightly build JB-MR1 ( aokp_d2tmo_jb-mr1_build-2 ). I was looking into this because it has 4.2.1 jellybean and it was suggested I avoid CM 10.1 nightly.
Im new all this rooting and rom stuff and yesterday morning i successfully rooted and inststalled the jellybomb 14.0.0 jelly bean rom thanks to qbking77's on point videos. so the question is... how can i switch which rom im running? i like the jellybeen roms and im looking to explore more to see which better suits my needs. ive heard of doing clean/dirtry instals or something of the sort but i want the best and safest way possible so i dont run into any bricking trouble. please help?
Ok, read up on how to flash a recovery
Download the rom of your choice and place it.on your sdcard. Once you do that you can install roms by booting into recovery and finding the zip for the rom you want to flash and selecting it through the "install zip from sdcard" option
Now a clean install is whenyou wipe all partitions, aka blocks of your phones memory, (details farther down) and then install the rom zip. This method minimizes the chances for problems to occur after installing
A clean flash involves:
Formatting system
Formatting / Clearing data (also known as a factory reset)
Wiping cache
Wiping / Clearing dalvik cache
Now a dirty flash is when you just flash the new rom zip over whatever you're currently rumning, without clearing anything. This method is only recommended when flashing an updated version of the same rom, and even then, the nature of some updates can require you to do a clean flash.
One more thing, DO NOT flash any roms, mods, or zips for the international version. That usa surefire way to brick your debice because the partitions are completely different.
To learn more about how android and this.stuff works, I would suggest heading over to xda,university.com
Thanks for the info. What is the best way to back everything up? I backed everything up wen I installed th jb. Rom and went to restore and couldnt find anythingband had to start from scratch.

Backup via CWM (RECOVERY) is mainly for restoring the same rom or going back to the rom you were running if experimenting, Now, can use apps such as Titanium backup to save all the other settings, apps and things. Once you flash your new rom, download it, open program and can restore your stuff that way. Personally, I'll wipe, start from scratch, sometimes i'll download an app i never use, and it just allows me to clear out the useless ones.. Happy flashing!

Yes as said above, a backup through recovery (also called a "nandroid" ) stores an EXACT image of the current state of your device. Meaning all data, all system files, all apps, radios, etc. Backing up through an app, like Titanium Backup, only backs up certain things like apps and app data
Basically, if you're trying any experimental stuff that may break your system (for example, flashing a new modem or testing to see if a certain kernel works), then a nandroid is the way to go because you can restore to an exact image of a state when everything was working
Yea I did that the 1st time and couldnt recover anything. Is there a certain way I should recover or maybe I did something wrong? Im not sure. Sorry if im sounding stupid but I cant return my phone if I screw it up so im tryin to be as safe as possible. Hopefully thats understandable

No no, its recovery
The recovery is basically something that allows you to install zips, it doesnt actually have much to do with recovering anything lol
But first do what was suggested right above me to check to see if you have a recovery installed
To get a more detailed description of what a recovery is and what it does, you can get over to xda-university and read through the "as user" section on recoveries
Think cwm has saved a few phones on here. Me I don't use a pc. Easy just with phone. If he's deleted his folder should he recoveR then it would bring that folder bk?

OK titanium bkup. But don't restore all things if your backing up at lot as will save 4.1.2 4.2.1 and 4.2 2 and so on. Don't want to mix as fc will happen

So iv rooted, and using goo manager (can't use Odin because I don't have PC and this was easier) I flashed the latest version of twrp. I first did a nandroid backup and then tried to flash PAC ROM 4.4.2 nightly and cm11 neither worked (I have tried others since then) each time it says "no md5 file found". Its not the end of the world if I have to use the stock ROM for a while till I sort this out.. But when I flashed my nandroid backup I got stuck in a bootloop now I don't know what to do. I can get to twrp still and download mode if nessessary
Please help im a bit of a noob but I'm not stupid and have flashed ROMs on 3 devices successfully. Thanks in advance! I would be greatful for a fix to either of these problems.

If you're using a Linux machine there is a program called heimdall (if I recall correctly) that is supposed to be similar to Odin. I have no personal experience with it so I suggest Google and the search function here.
There is an option in twrp to check for md5 make sure you're not having it Check for it or it will fail, I ran into the same issue after I started playing on my s3 never had that issue on other devices but I do on this one. You can also try using cwm.
For the boot loop try a factory reset a lot of times it will fix it. Also keep in mind that 4.3 roms take a long time to boot the first time after flashing. Check in the development section enewman17 has a stock 4.3 restore it will put the phone back like it would have been immediately after the 4.3 OTA (except warranty bit in download mode will still show a count and be in red letters) even down to stock Samsung 3e recovery.

I was on stock ROM on the rogers-canadian variant which should be the same as the at&t variant I think anyway I cant find the checkbox for "check md5" in twrp do u know where to look? Also can I flash cwm.zip through twrp?(if twrp will allow me) or will this cause more problems. I think there must be a way to fix my problems but I'm pas the extent of my knpwledge . also I think there must be an issue with the stock backup that is causing the bootloop don't know how to fix it. Not working still after multiple factory resets and advanced wipes
Thanks guys I really need help with this
Since you have the i747m (Canadian version), I think it would be best to start from scratch.
Were you running a stock 4.3 ROM?
I would love to start from scratch but I can't flash ROMs and I get a bootloop when I try to use my backup. So I can't boot into system and its the same as the i747 just without the att bloatware and rogers instead
Just flash the stock rooted ROM from xda. Just search for s3 pre-rooted roms , download, and flash via Odin

Thanks sounds simple enough but I will have a hard time getting a windows PC to use. In the meantime is there anything else I can try? Is it possible to flash cwm through twrp or does that not work? If it does will it harm the Odin process to go back to stock? And will USB debugging work if no OS is installed on phone... How does that work?
Let us know what was the most recent stock ROM you had on your phone. Is it 4.1.1, 4.1.2, or 4.3?

You probably need to format your internal SD card from twrp (the option where you have to type the word "yes") I believe it's under advanced wipe settings. I would backup anything important from your internal card, then format it. Then try doing whatever you're trying to do (flash a certain rom or restore a certain backup). I had a similar issue last week. I couldn't flash roms or restore backups because the phone would reboot into a bootloop when twrp tried wiping the data partition.
If you can't get into a rom or connect to a computer to backup your internal cards contents, you may have to use the file manager inside twrp to backup to your external SD card.

Not sure sorry.. And I could be wrong but I think if you flash stock from Odin, it wipes your internal memory as well. If that's the case, I would backup whatever rom/backup you plan on using to your external memory and try my advice.
Other than that, not sure what to suggest. I can only advise based on what I have personally done in the past.

Thanks and good point
I use twrp on the n7 and its exellent. I tried it with the s3 and always had random problems after a flash or restore. I switched to Phil's cwm touch and have nor had a problem in months and I flash or restore almost daily.
I am on stock based custom rom on my i747m (canadian) TWRP 2.7.0.0 works perfectly, no issues.
Just in-case someone doesn't know they have newer version of twrp for both Us and Canadian versions.
