So, I guess I'll begin by saying I'm new to Android. I feel so dumb saying that, but that should clear thing up a bit, as I have no clue about what "flashing" is, or "modems," and Lord help me, because "Odin" sounds like a really funny name.
So, I do have some precedents with iOS, and I know how to work with that, but I am a total noob with Android.
So now on to the Questions, there will be a few.
1) How to Root Epic 4G Touch- How safe is it? I do know I get things like Clockwork Mod, which I believe is for loading things.
2) Installing Custom ROMs- How do I "flash" these ROMs, and what exactly is flashing? I have been looking at certain ROMs, and I guess it is down to Starburst and Caulkin's.
3) Does Rooting/Installing erase the things on my phone?- I currently have my phone loaded with things, will rooting/installing ROMs delete this? How can I create backups?
4)LoS- I heard LoS happens more often on rooted phones. Is this true?
5) Kernels- What in the same hell is this?- Any best one of these out there? What do they do?
6) Tutorials for any of these?
Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm stock, running modem( can someone tell me what this is again?) EG30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. I'll update the thread if I have any new questions. xD
1) watch and follow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
so far its kinds controversial wether its safe or not but i think it is
2)first turn off your phone second hold power and vol up and it will turn on into clockwork mode then wipe data/factory reset from menu then wipe cache from menu. choose install zip from menu then click choose from sd. then find it and click and install.
3) rooting and unrooting won't wipe data but installing roms will
4) its been shown on both rooted and unrooted phones so we really don't know.
5)DONT PLAY WITH THESE unless you know what your doing
i think they are the #1 reasons for soft bricking phones.
i don't exactly know how to explain it but they affect how your phone does what it does
whether it over clocking of voodoo color

Thanks man, just one more question, have you rooted? I want to know from people whose phones are successfully rooted, as I don't know much about Android, and I would probably kill myself if I ****ed up such a beautiful piece of machinery.
yup im rooted and i got to say i like my phone being rooted
there are less restrictions placed and since i have had android for while now and my last phone was rooted i coulnt stand being not rooted
also i used to have los daily once or twice but it was drastically reduced after doing this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VDxEnO1tow for me
you can also try out the one click root option that located in the top of the dev section it works great and you dont have to us ODIN to root you phone. Just remember to read read and read you will find all your answers that way

Will this let me flash Starburst ROM?
Oh, and one more thing, this doesn't mess with phone activation, etc. Right? Or would I have to re-activate the phone or something once I flash a ROM/root?

Yes it will let you install any rom that you want as long as you also insstall clockwork mod (CWM5) it also in the instructions on how to root.
No this will not mess up your activation just start flashing roms till you find one you like. please just remember to do a backup inside cwm once you are rooted you will see an option there for it. This will let you go right back to how your phones is right now.
Thank you so much! Also, last nooby question, I promise, I heard something about a Binary counter with Odin, will flashing roms/rooting with that one click root increase it? Also, what happens when it does increase?
Thanks.

Assuming you are using ClockWorkMod, wiping data and cache will not affect the information on your external SD card. If you select "advanced" from the CWM main menu, it will provide an option for partitioning the SD card. I haven't messed with that item, but I'm guessing it could wipe data from the external SD card.
I use the ClockWorkMod backup/recovery and it works great. I also use Titanium Backup. It will allow you to backup all of your applications and files and then restore after you've wiped everything and installed a new ROM. Titanium also requires rooting.
I started out using the Odin ROM and has some issues, so I reloaded the stock ROM and then flashed the Starburst ROM with LoST kernal. I'm having great success...great battery life and all is well.
No when you wipe data its on the phone but not pictures on the SD card. Its easy once you get going.
Email me if needed I can walk u thru.

Why don't I have an advanced option in CWM? ROM manager says that I have the latest version (5. 0.2.7)
I tried to flash the EK02 zip and got an invalid signature file error in cwm and the installation was aborted. I did wipe data and cache beforehand. Can anyone tell me why this happened?
Thanks,
Mike

Hey whats up guys?
so......Im not really new here guys, But i am new to APP2SD....i partitioned my card for the KINGDOM ROM which turned out to be really cool. Everything went GREAT with the partition, I followed VIRUS direction to the "T".......now i deleted all my old backups because i was told that some files may be corrupt and what not, so i made 2 backups of the B3 ROM from virus.....to try to make a long story short, when i restore one or the other of the backups i have, the APPS that required ROOT, tells me they cant find ROOT>....and believe me...im ROOTED LOL.....im not that lost.....i was even given a command for TE......"app2sd--cachesd"......and the PERMISSION WERE DEINED ACCROSS THE BOARD......now i can get to the titanium backup's =main screen and it shows i have APP2SD= 1.91mb........so im guess the app2sd isnt installing the apps onto my SDcard...im not sure if i have to move every app to my SDcard myself...not sure if that the issues....but to me something sounds wrong....ya know, ive deleted all the apps and re-installed them....i even installed them from amazon...NO GO....so if i RE-Flash, the apps will work...cause i setup my phone with TB.....but its after when i RESTORE my backup, that everything goes screwy...ohh and i am backing up SDtext.....and wiping it if i flash another ROM or restore a differnet backup.......Cant really find any info on anyne having this same problem....This is the first time im actually making my first thread so go easy on me LOL......thanks alots guys...I really appreciate it...
EDIT:.....ohh and all my apps sometimes show up in SU and they are allowed.....and SU is updated

I'm not sure I quite follow you, but, if you have the time, try this: after you've gotten your rom setup how you like it, reboot into recovery. Hopefully, you're using amon RA v2.3 as your recovery. If so, go to the wipe menu and wipe the cache & dalvik. After that, go to the backup/restore menu and, in addition to what is already selected to be backed up, select sdext and .android.secure. now create the backup and afterwards, reboot. Now to test it out, for back into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card and then go to the backup/restore menu and restore the backup you just made. If using amon RA, the name of the backup *should* have a BSDEA beginning or something to that extent. Afterwards, reboot. Your system *should* restore back to the way it was without any problems.

It will be automatically activated if whichever Rom you are flashing had it cooked into it
If it's not cooked into the ROM, then it must be activated ( by flashing the script via recovery, i think....) Sorry, in kinda new to aa2sd too

You're very welcome. As for calkulin's format-all zip, I no longer use it because before flashing a rom, I wipe EVERYTHING in amon RA's (v2.3) wipe menu, EXCEPT the SD card, and I only have to do it once and I've never have a problem. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get it taken care of. Take care and enjoy Mom's special day....

Hi all, ive had my Tmobile samsung galaxy s2 for awhile now, and i finally decided to root it (and did it successfully) a few days ago (yay)
Ive done a bit of research for what I can do while rooted, basically after CPU setting, save battery life when idle... Simple things
But ive been meaning to try flashing a ROM. But I want to make sure i know absolutely everything needed to know to flash one. I had a samsung tmobile sidekick that I was able to root and flash Gingerclone on, but I remember it had alot of little details while installing that simply missing one could seriously screw up your phone
So first off, if anyone has had the sidekick: Is flashing/ installing roms as complex on the sgh-t989 as it is on sidekick 4g?
And secondly... After rooting my galaxy, i no longer have the stock android recovery (obviously)...... Instead it is replaced with CWM-based recovery (i think 5.0.2.2?). Is there a difference between this and Clockworkmod recovert (which should show an orange screen)?
I wanted to use ROM manager but opted not to when it told me that I "needed clockworkmod recovery installed" to work.
A little help, please?
Thanks!

Okay, great! Glad it was so simple lol.
Now about my other question... Let me explain. When I would install a custom ROM on my sidekick, i remember having to do all sorts of things like unmount system/ unmount SD card before installing and remount them after (i dont remember the exact methods... Dont quote me on that).
I know the general procedure of basically Wiping data, Wiping cache, Wiping delvik cache... But does the galaxy s2 require checking of all of that unmounting/mounting?

Flashed many roms, and no need for all that. Just make sure you wait the 10 minutes after flashing a rom.
FlaShing roms on this phone is so simple "that even a caveman can do it". I would also advise to ditch clockwork recovery and install twrp, also never use rom manager to flash roms. Just follow the op's instructions on what steps to follow to flash the rom successfully. Also no need to mount and unmount anything. Good luck.
Awesome! Thank you all for your replies, glad to here that flashing is much simpler on this phone
I really wouldnt recommend anyone rooting a sidekick as a beginner. It was my phone, i soft bricked ot my first time. Ugh, it was such a hassle! And it left me a little traumatized to try anything on this. lol!
Thanks for all the help!
Here are the genreric steps to follow to flash a rom (and yes, TWRP is recommended instead of CWM):
- place the rom zip on the internal storage
- place a copy of the radio zip that you have on the internat storage (for safety reasons)
- copy Google Apps zip if it is not included in the rom (most roms do not have these included, but the dev might provide a tuned version)
- reboot phone and enter the recovery menu (hold vol up + vol down pressed while booting)
# In recovery mode
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash gapps (if missing from the rom)
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- enjoy
If you are planning on flashing a Rom on your phone of course twrp recommended and you should definitely try Jedi mind trick x2 for the t989 Hercules. It is the most stable Rom on the Samsung galaxy s2 T989 T-Mobile. The instructions above are the best instructions you should follow. And read it carefully or you will brick your device. If using twrp follow the twrp method. And if using cwm make sure you use the extra cwm steps. It is super important you follow them unless you want a fancy paper weight.

Hello guys,
It's my first question to the forum. I hope you can give me a clue resolve this problem.
I bought a Note 2 SGH i317 some days ago.
It was my first root but with your trheads everything was ok (for some days).
I tried JediX, Custom Rom 4.2.5 and some other.
But after tried some custom roms, I noted that when I flash any rom the phone stucks on Samsung Galaxy Note II screen and I have to pull out the battery to turn off the phone.
I tried with many others roms and all did the same.
Later I realized that the flash process was very fast compared to the first ones, so I guess the flash proccess fails in some instance.
I returned to stock rom and root it again with same results.
I tried with CVM and TWRP.
I can restore some nandroid backups to get the phone working, but can't flash any rom now!
Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
Yes. I did every step.
Sometimes I wipe both before and after flashing rom.
In some cases I format /system also.
I'm thinking in format some special partition/folder, but I don't know where to start or if it will works...

If flashing stock rom doesn't help, your internal memory might be corrupted, and might need to format it through recovery.
It's not a sure thing but it's another option to troubleshoot your problem. If you're gonna try that, make sure to backup all your stuff

It's hard to say what made it corrupt (if at all, remember, this is only an assumption). Could've been an app that caused it, could've been flashing a custom rom, and something went wrong during the flashing process.
If you're using twrp (which i highly suggest you do), in the 'wipe' menu there's an option to wipe internal sd. DON'T FORGET! before you do this make a nandroid backup and keep that backup on your external sd, or on your computer. Also, backup all your stuff, like pictures, music, etc.

Thank you AlonB.
I'll try.
I'm using CWM right now, because I thought that TWRP could be part of the problem.
I have two backups with CWM and two with TWRP, An one complete with Titanium also!

The only thanks you could give is just hitting the thanks button on my answers to you. But you don't really have to, it's entirely up to you. If you think my responses are helpful to you, then by all means ... In order to close a thread you could ask a moderator to do so. I'm not sure you're obligated to do so.
Btw, if cwm gives you an md5 error, could be most likely because you changed the name cwm has originally assigned to that backup. To solve this, just change it to what it was. If you didn't change the backup name, you could try going into advanced menu in cwm and toggle signature check to disable

Hello.
I want to restore my friends galaxy s2 (t989), but no matter what I do it will not restore. I tried odin and I tried flashing a different rom through cwm recovery, but everytime i boot it up after restoring it stays the same way. Meaning that all of the app, settings, photos, etc remain on the phone. As if I didnt even try to restore it. I am guessing it is a virus but I dont know how to remove it Another hint that it is a virus, every time i remove or install a new app from the play store, when I reboot the changes are un-done, meaning that the apps that I removed come back, and the apps that I installed are gone. It is almost as if it is stuck on a state and keeps reverting to it after every reboot. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks
Try doing a factory reset in the phone settings then go into recovery and wipe as if u are about to flash another ROM. Manually put the phone into download mode and try to restore from there

In recovery go to mount and storage section. Then format data, system, and cache. Then factory data reset. This will fix it. The same way you format a sd card and it wipes it clean thats what happens when you format data, system, and cache.

Thank you guys for answering, I tried both methods but neither worked. After some more research I found out what is causing this to happen. Apparently the internal memory of the phone is stuck as read only, I don't know how he did that. While I am searching for a way to make is read and write, I came across this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025475 but it is for the skyrocket and there was no solution. However, I also came across this http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/347685-internal-phone-storage-becomes-read-only.html for the HTC Incredible, but to be honest I have no idea what he did and whether or not it will work on this phone. Do you guys have any idea how make the internal memory of his phone read and write instead of read only? Any help is appreciated thank you.

Flash new rom then go back into recovery and format everything and reset. some recoveries have mount system options so maybe find another one. Something is definitely weird going on. Root explorer, Root toolbox, and other apps have option to mount system as rw as well like biglil said

Im bad at explaining stuff so let me try explaining it a different way.
Like I said, I want to change the rom on my friends phone. I have a fair amount of experience in doing this since I also have an s2 running jedi knight 6. As usual, I would reboot into recovery, wipe system/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik then install rom. This is where it gets weird, after I boot up the phone, it goes back to the way it was, as if I did not wipe anything. I even tried flashing a completely different rom and I even tried restoring it back to stock rom through ODIN nothing happens. Also, the mount toggle in root explorer is only for the root system, not the internel memory of the phone. Thanks for the help though.
Ok use titanium backup. Two options guaranteed to work. Find the wipe all system and data option use that. If that doesn't work find unintegrate system dalvik option and use that. One these should definitely work.

I tried that but it didn't work either. I think i am out of ideas lol. We even sent it to Samsung about a month ago and they couldn't fix it, mainly because it was rooted. Anyways, I appreciate you guys trying to help me.

I have the 4.2.2 rooted, and I'd like to upgrade to 4.4.2, is it really as simple as just getting a 4.4.2 ROM? or are there any other things I need? I'm sorry I'm pretty new when it comes to android stuff, it scares me really the thought of accidentally getting a $700 paperweight.
other information:
baseband version is M919UVUAMDL
kernel version is 3.4.0-453951 [email protected]#1
build # is JDQ39.M919UVUMADL
OK so an update. I guess I literally don't have any idea what I'm doing, I just spent about 2 hours reading around here and honestly couldn't find a single guide or even where to start on how to do this, install a custom rom or anything. I seriously regret rooting and wish I could just do this OTA...... the root benefits do not outweigh what i'm expected to know to upgrade now

Hello friend, do not be discouraged. Do you have access to a PC? I sure hope so. First things first, download the latest version of TWRP recovery, it's great. Flash it via ODIN in the PDA slot. Okay now you have a good new recovery, now you need the latest baseband. What you need to do is download the NB4 baseband before you do anything as far as getting a ROM. There are tutorials in the general section of the T-Mobile s4. You're going to download the modem, flash it via ODIN by extracting the zip and placing it into the phone slot of odin(the tutorials are way better at the steps then I am) then flashing, and then you'll be on the newest baseband(modem). Then you need to find yourself a ROM. Thess can be found in the Android development section of the T-Mobile s4. I personally recommend Insane Kitkat. But find one that you like... I hope this helped friend. Let me know.
Edit: if you're not sure how to get to any of these things, Google them! Google NB4 modem T-Mobile s4, Google TWRP T-Mobile s4.. Etc.. It's easy!
Edit edit: here friend, links

I guess my next question is, what exactly do I do to install the rom?

Alright so you've got nb4 modem and twrp recovery now? Did you make sure nb4 stayed? Is it in your phone info? The baseband should end in NB4 now. We'll once you have the ROM, place it on your external sd card then boot into recovery by turning off your phone. Now hold the volume up key + Power until the device boots into Samsung logo and you'll see blue letters at top left, let go of buttons at that point. You'll see TWRP image then you're in your recovery. Now you're gonna go to advanced option or whenever the advanced wiping option is located. Wipe system, internal, etc. Wipe everything EXCEPT external SD card and the last option, don't wipe external because that's where the ROM is. Now, go back to home of the TWRP, DO NOT REBOOT. Now click install, navigate to your external sd card and find the ROM. Select it and it select full install. You're given a bunch of different options as to what you want added. After it installs, reboot and you're good to go. Thess instructions can be found on the page where you got the ROM. He tells you to do a full wipe, etc. Let me know how it goes.

soooooooo yeah. I did that. moved the zip over to the SD card, booted into recovery mode, wiped, went back to install and now I can't find the zip. i know it's there because I double checked to make sure it was moved. it would help if TWRP wasn't so picky and chooses the FIRST thing i come close to tapping. I think I just screwed up
So I think I just found it, it was way at the bottom, and I like I said I couln't move anything without going somewhere else, almost always.

I'm confused friend. So you moved it to your external sd card? And when you went into the install option in TWRP you made sure you were in the external sd card section? At the top it says internal by default every time and you have to tap it then navigate to external then find your file. Easiest way is to make a folder on external called "ROM" place it in there, then go into recovery and flash. What do you mean by TWRP being picky?
