Like the title said, I finally jumped on board. I got the Evo at launch, and used it until October. I saw the Epic when it came out, but I thought it was too big, so I decided to wait for the iPhone. Well, long story short, it was a mistake lol. Small screen, locked-down software, etc etc. Well now that bad boy's gonna be up on craigslist and I'm back in the world of Android.
So far, I'm very pleased.
Any rom recommendations? I use to run Calkulin's Evo rom for a while, and I see that he has an Epic rom, so I guess I'll give that a spin first
Just try out his rooted fb17 build with the fb15 modem I've been using it as my daily since it was dropped.
Ics is super awesome on this phone just for the love of god DO NOT USE CWM TOUCH RECOVERY. i don't wanna see another i bricked my phone thread lol.

I would advise against using any of the ICS roms as they are not daily driver status yet (I'm running an fb21 setup so I know).
Go with Blazer 4.0, until more work is done on the ICS ones, this will be your best bet for battery life, stability, and smoothness. I ran Calkulin's for a long time and his rom is good but Blazer definitely gets better battery life.

Try them all but some good advice is until you get comfy with flashing and the little changes from the OG Evo to the Epic, I would just flash stock custom roms and leave those ICS roms alone like the poster above me just said. No need to bork your new phone so fast incase you do something wrong. Also stay away from the Touch recovery until they do some more testing on it... Just my opinion
I'd recommend both Calkulin's ROM, and Blazer ROM at the current time (And they're both excellent developers, so i'd think their future releases will be good also)... not to say the other ROM's available aren't good, I just personally haven't used them so I can not speak on something I haven't experienced. I expect a lot of ROM's to be released soon based on ICS, so the ROM recommendation might change soon.
Welcome, enjoy your new phone
Thanks for all the recommendations. Honestly, I haven't had much of a reason to root the device. The main reason I rooted the Evo was to get rid of Sense, and increase battery life.... needless to say I have neither of those problems on the E4GT.
I'll probably just root but stick with the current ROM I'm running so that I don't have to start from scratch. Once the ICS roms become more stable, I'll look into those.

Honestly, that's what I am doing. I have a stock ROM with root and CWM... and I'm observing the ICS progress and waiting for a decent, stable ROM/Kernel/Recovery then I'll make a change. My phone is important to me, so I observe to watch the testing and such before diving in.
I kept it stock myself and its been very well.... Bought my et4g about a week ago also for 200 bones... Frekaing steal basically

There are several Alpha/Beta ICS roms out right now but I would strongly suggest using the older ones for now. Too many people are bricking their phones trying to run ICS. If you must do ICS I would suggest completely restoring your phone back to 100% stock and then installing ICS to a stock/unrooted rom.
I personally am using Calkulin's EL29 (v.2.8.1) rom with the EL29 Kernel and EL29 baseband. It is Gingerbread 2.3.6 but it is insanely stable, extremely responsive; especially if you don't use the TouchWiz but instead use GoLauncher.
I rooted mine so i could delete twiz and all the bloat, then i found team nocturnals dark ics blend rom and flashed it and the fb21 modem and life is good, got rid of all the ugly colors and twiz and fb21 modem increased my 3g data from 100kbps to 1mbps now when i use my og evo it looks dirty from the lower screen quality and its sooooo laggy compared to thia beast

Cm9 ftw! It's a few more steps at the moment to flash and get some fixes for gps and ext sd to work, but it's so beautiful on this phone. I can't stand tw and all the bloat.

I haven't flashed in months and never tried flashing any ICS roms yet because from what i read so far that ICS is nowhere near as smooth as Gingerbread roms. Of course it been about about 4 months sense my last flash.
Can ya bring me up to speed on these new roms,is ICS as smooth and bug free as Blazer 4.0 GB,what doesn't work in MIUI and CM9,or should i just reflash Blazer 4.0 for smooth/bug free rom?
I need to reflash because my son dipped my phone in toilet today and power button doesn't work except to turn on the phone,so im starting to think that its software related, hopefully flash will fix it.
Oh,i used that app that tells me if my Epic is in ICS Brick danger, the app says it is,are the chances great for it to get bricked with ICS rom if i flash it right?
Thanks in advance.

I can give you my opinion- I ran blazer 4.0 and 4.1- flawless roms- besides smooth, fast and efficient. I tried the Blue Kuban- had no mms, no internet and force closes. So in my opinion- still in beta mode- not yet polished. I tried blazer ics- no problems- except had no boot to recovery- and no theming yet- so- I would say- blazer ics is more stable than blue k. but
not as intricate- bricking will come only if you dont follow flashing directions- c a r e f u l l y. read- read- and read again-
watch video ( thnx to qb king 77 ) and in no way do I mean to offend any developer whatsoever- I have much respect for the tough and creative jobs they do ! But I went back to 4.1 blazer- for now...
im also wondering this! can someone comments on battery life of aokp and is it compiled from source.

AOKP "based“ on source, we don't have source for this phone yet... battery not bad really.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Super Galaxy rom yet. It's very stable and has great features.
Also, running any aokp/aosp roms will have small glitches and qwerks to them. As long as you can deal with the small things, aokp/aosp can be the best rom. My suggestion is to run something else until Samsung releases source to build aokp...

I've been running Blu Kuban since it dropped and I've had nothing but smooth sailing. It's an amazing ROM with incredible development support. You can keep it as simple as you like or customize it to your taste.
All ICS ROMs are basically beta because we don't have source, yet. But there are more than a few fantastic ICS ROMs out there that are very suitable for use as a daily.
Just read through the Development section and try out a few, that's the best way to know what works best for you.
Tnz Blend rom has probably the best battery life. But in terms of smoothness, nothing can top blazer. IMO

Yeah Blue Kuban,Calcun and Blazer are all pretty close in performance.
heh,i went back to blazers 4.0.1 my debate isn't gb or ics its now caulkins El29 vs Blazers 4.0.1 so far im on blazer because it seems faster battery is very similar. Got tired of ICS until source is released =P

We had this debate before on here,as far as i remember the verdict was that Blazer is more cleaner with fewer mods making it more stable, while Calcun's has more mods.
I went with blazer because i like my roms light weight, with not to many added scripts and bug free.I been running it for about 4 months and Blazer had me forget about flashing intill stable ICS is released.

I think HTC and OG Epic roms are more how should i say it-internally modded/coded.
Blazer and other roms are better than stock because devs have removed Carrier IQ spyware and alot of other junk and made a few mods to them,so they are definetly better and have better battery life.
cm9
Just trying out blue kuban after being on cm9...loved cm9 but battery was terrible due to the kernel...lets see what blu kuban can do....so far, very fast, lots of options and very blue. Great ROM.

Parnoid Android 1.5 gets my vote. Tablet mode is really sweet. I flashed it a couple weeks ago and haven't noticed any bugs at all.
Ok,i think ICS is stable enough now to try.
Would it be safe to say that Phantom Blazer is one of the best and most stable ICS roms?
Gotta give dazednconfused's wicked sensations a try! Super fast, buttery smooth, and good battery to boot! Plus really nice theming.

Your experience will be what matters. My preference has been Agat's slightly themed/modified ROM and Blazer (going back to the best GB ROM ever - in my opinion). BluKuban has great support and loads of 'pickable' features. AOKP and CM9 are super customizable - by you I mean, you'll have to figure out how you want it.
If you take the time and read through the stickies AND followup posts you should be good to go.
Flash a few. Try a new one every other day or so; I did. I'm a stickler for the basics working first (making calls, email, sms, mms, GPS and calendars) then adding the bells whistles and tweaks as a secondary but nice thing.
Blu Kuban is definitely the top dawg at the moment, although the new ICS Blazer probably comes pretty close.
Hello, well T-Mobile failed on my upgrade.. they tried to send me out the Marble white when I upgraded my 2yr for the Pebble Blue.. so unless they make it a Sat delivery, I am stuck waiting till monday. =/ Gives me a chance to look thinsg over here. Now I was hearing CM10 ASOP was a stable build if I wanted Jelly Bean. However I also heard ASOP breaks the HDMI ability? Also looking for a rom with the cifs ability for network shares. (Also DLNA still work on these non stock roms?)
So anyways also been reading the rumor that sometime next week or so the official JB will be released, so should I wait on a custom rom for official builds to be used to upgrade the custom roms or is there something common and main stream thats ideal to use for everything without issues. Also confused about the Panorama stuff, Never used that before and I hear some roms feature it.
Anyways if anyone could help point me with the right basic info, so when I get my S3, I have some insight on whats ideal atm or the status. =) Not new to XDA here, so I already know lots of reading to do before flashing my ideal stuff. =) Thanks.

ive tried out several of the stock based roms. my favorite is the wicked rom by evil1art. its pretty stable. ive used it with the hdmi mhl connector and its great. on a side note, be careful when you buy that connector as the pin configuration for the s3 is different. there is an adaptor piece you can buy if you already own one. thats what i did. its like 9 bucks on amazon.
in my opinion the AOSP roms are just not quite there yet. plus, a lot of people, myself included, really like what they have done with touchwiz. not everyone will agree with that statement but its my opinion.
ive been tempted to try out some of the JB leaks but im holding out for the official release i think. i personally hate dealing with buggy roms. i prefer more stable builds.
kernel wise, trinity kernel and faux kernel are both really popular. try some things out and see what works best for you
im assuming your panorama question refers to the camera? its pretty simple you select it when the camer is open. its one of the options on the side and you just slowly pan the camera as you take the picture. ive had mixed luck with it. panorma photos ive taken with apps from the market tend to come out a little cleaner. but its a great option for capturing a view or scenery that you just cant grab in one shot.
all in all in general. the camera is the best ive ever used on a phone. but again, other people might have a different opinion on this.
hope this helped a little bit.
Personal opinion, is to stay on stock until the Jelly Bean update, and then see what is done. WildChild usually will make a great clean rom of a stock build, and to be honest, the only way you are keeping the things you want, HDMI etc, you will have to stay with stock/touchwiz build. You can still do mods, and themes to try to get the look you want, but you will never get the functionality you want in AOSP. It's just too difficult, and not a priority for AOSP devs.
Ok so avoid AOSP. Good advice. Thanks! Also any news on cifs support or a cifs.ko file I can download and just insmod load for the S3? DNLA working good too? (Since my dd-wrt I have that running)
And yea, whats the point of using the phone without the hdmi heh. So I will assume then all CM roms are worse then stock at this stage (and/or lack HDMI ability?)
So in the end, you all are suggesting stick with stock, root it, play around till official JB comes out and roms based on it?
Wicked rom is working good for me.
I'm running CM10 nightlies on my GS3 and love it. Everything works fine, including MHL out. I can't really compare it to TW though since I've been running CM10 since I bought the thing lol.

Yea since latest news is toward the end of this month, maybe just before Galaxy Note 2 for JB for us S3. I may just wait to see roms based off the new official one. The trick is.. would I go CM10, then I am really wondering how we would even know a build changed up to start basing things more off the official source (vs leaked)
Definitly wicked rom. I've tried every rom in the s3 forums and by far wicked to me is the best all around. Wicked with ktoons kernel the pho e is blazing fast. Ultra smooth as stable as the day I took it out of the box and I get an average of 13-15 hours battery with farely heavy use. You will not be disappointed in this rom/kernel combo.

Right now rooted stock.. isnt bad.. I was surprised to see how fast it is and that it DOES have cifs.ko support already! Woot!
Just curious as I just got my S3 today (came from the evo lte) loving it so far. running paranoid 4.1.1 right now and like it just a few little bugs here and there with camera/alarm and mms so thinking of going to a stock looking samsung rom.
Just wondering what is everyones favorite rom for overall performance/battery life and just least amount of bugs. Like everything to work just hoping to get some optimizations and tweaks to make the phone perform better than what samsung puts out.
Looked at Blazer ROM and seems like the best from a few minutes of reading.
Once again thanks

Jellybomd is solid, still liked Blazer more. Paranoid will own once its completely stable. Thought about flashing anakonda tonight.... very highly themed and I've heard good things.
OdexedBlue is what I always go back to. I've used Blazer, FreeGS3, JB Leak LIF, and stock rooted. There's no comparison.
Samsung Galaxy S3
OdexedBlue ROM
LI3 Stock Kernel
LIF Baseband
XDA Premium - Support our developers, modders, & themers!
FreeGS3 with Trinity kernel, same stock feel with the little tweets here and there. Undervolted and overclocked, though I usually run stock speed. I get easily 13-15 hours with 4-5 hours screen on time.

Stock Freeza's DeoDexed ROM. I themed it the way I want using Morphology, and I absolutely love it. I have a themed stock messaging app (always wanted this) centered clock and everything.
Get about full day and a half on battery, and that's texting, calling and using some data.

I'm a fan of Wicked Sensations and FreeGS3 ROMs. I've used both as everyday ROMs, and have had zero problems with both. FreeGS3 is more closer to stock look and use, and Wicked is a very cool themed blue (Wicked also has a green/orange theme named AnaKonda that is just as cool). When I don't use and abuse my phone in terms of videos/browsing/social media, etc, I get great battery life from both. Just my $.02.

I myself just came from the evo lte i also like a rom with the samsung look. i really like a rom that still includes the motion for the s3, thats one of my favorite parts of the phone. but i have been using peoples rom and it has a launcher , or touch wiz 5x6 or 5x5 column that you can choose from. it also allows you to choose what samsung apps you would like to install with it as well. it is blue colored but it still has the same layout just different icons. i really enjoy it and i haven't had to many bugs.

TPR is a great rom. However, Everyone's experience and choices will vary.. So typically, Threads like this are quickly closed/locked.. Just spend some time with roms that interest you.. And see what you personally think of them.
while it's only $100 at best buy. How's the development for this one (AT&T)? It looks like 9/10 of the ROMs have been abandoned and not updated for a month or more, is there some reason for this?
Anyway, if I get the SGSIII I will NEED
GPS that locks within 30 seconds, I get lost A LOT.
Working audio (no skipping or weird issues) from the 3.5mm connector
stable and doesn't crash or go really slow
Camera working enough to at least take clear pictures quickly
Do any ROMs do this currently?
Also a couple other questions. What can I expect for battery life, does it last a whole day with moderately heavy use? Any known issues that just come with the device and can't be/aren't currently fixed, like crapple's camera flare or my Infuse's terrible GPS (that got fixed with a relaunch and silent recall)?
Wtf. Almost every cm10 or aokp rom has been updated nightly. Most touchwiz roms don't get updated since they are close to being finished since there are no bugs on stock roms.
If you want it to work good run touchwiz roms. With battery I get 15 to 25 hours and about 4 hours on screen time which is pretty heavy use. As for bugs none I know of on stock. Everything works flawlessly.

you can use aokp, Its great!
While the International version has a ton of roms, the I747 has a good amount of solid builds. You can have your choice of stock ics touchwiz (ariel), jelly bean touchwiz leaks (aristodemos, serenity) and aosp jellybean hybrids (aokp, liquid smooth, paranoid android). All work perfectly with GPS locking on within 15 seconds max. Never had a problem.

100$ outright or under contract? BB canada is 0$ on our crappy 3 year plan
Yea.... a lot of the TouchWiz ICS ROM's haven't had updates lately because there isn't really a whole lot for them to do with the ROM, since it was pretty much complete to begin with. Just about all they really did on them is remove bloat, add custom themes, and tweak some stuff here and there. The TouchWiz JB ROM's still get updated fairly regularly, since there are still tweaks to be made here and there, and things to be updated as new leaks arise. But stuff like Cyanogenmod and the different ROM's built off of it are updated daily or every other day or two.
Been using CM10 nightly and now on M2 stable build. I use it as daily driver and don't have any issues. You won't be disappointed OP
I'll give my two cents as I've had this phone for bout 4 days now and I am coming of iOS.
I am a fairly techy user. I I run Linux servers for fun. I am but never got jntk android because I figured I'd play with the phone more than use it and it would end up being broken half the time.
Immediately after getting it I rooted it and flashed the rom and have already tried CM10, two TW ROMs and whatever else I could get my hand on.
Ultimately for stability purposes I'm still on stock. The phone is really good in terms of use, and but be prepared to know that ROMing it is still an experimental thing and if you want it to work flawlessly, and you'll most probably sitting on stock (which is not a bad thing)

but is Ariel the ATT equal of CleanRom for verizon?
I'm on SlimBean but battery isn't stellar... so going to try my luck at a touchwiz rom.
I have a international gs3 9300 and an ATT gs3 and I run my Att gs3 as my main phone because tasks aokp jellybean ROM is hands down the best ROM built for either phone. The 9300 has many more roms than the i747. I bought the 9300 for the increased development and I learned the expensive way that quality beats quantity in the ROM department. Get the Att gs3 and root and flash tasks aokp and I guarantee you will be very happy.
I hope you got the phone today and I hope you enjoy it. Personally, I'm so satisfied with the stock rooted ROM that I've almost kicked my flashing addiction.

I agree with Jonny here... I too am running JB AOKP and everything works perfect. Task650 is always adding new commits and is constantly updating the ROM. Another point to consider... every phone is NOT created equal. The same ROM and kernel can run better/worse on one SGS3 to the next. You have to flash and try a ROM out to see how it runs for you because it won't be the same on another phone of the same model. Besides, what's stopping YOU from going through the development area and reading the threads like the rest of us have to do to learn what we need to? First suggestion.... don't be lazy and expect others to spoon feed you answers because you WILL receive backlash and grief. Do yourself a favor and SEARCH and READ anything and everything you feel is pertinent to your query. Spare yourself the frustration. This is just a word to the wise. No disrespect intended.

Task and ktoonzes are rocking this phone and Cyanogen himself is heading up CM development. Enough said.

while it's only $100 at best buy.

The GPS and Navigation is AMAZING on any Android phone.
Their Music app could use some work, however i do use the app PlayerPro
TouchWiz is pretty stable but i find gets slower with time and i think thats due to the fact that its running ICS. I would recommend flashing a custom ROM such as CM10 for JB which makes the OS run ALOT smoother.
The stock camera is also very good with alot of features.
Hopes this helps.
