Just purchased E4GT - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Like the title said, I finally jumped on board. I got the Evo at launch, and used it until October. I saw the Epic when it came out, but I thought it was too big, so I decided to wait for the iPhone. Well, long story short, it was a mistake lol. Small screen, locked-down software, etc etc. Well now that bad boy's gonna be up on craigslist and I'm back in the world of Android.
So far, I'm very pleased.
Any rom recommendations? I use to run Calkulin's Evo rom for a while, and I see that he has an Epic rom, so I guess I'll give that a spin first

Just try out his rooted fb17 build with the fb15 modem I've been using it as my daily since it was dropped.
Ics is super awesome on this phone just for the love of god DO NOT USE CWM TOUCH RECOVERY. i don't wanna see another i bricked my phone thread lol.

I would advise against using any of the ICS roms as they are not daily driver status yet (I'm running an fb21 setup so I know).
Go with Blazer 4.0, until more work is done on the ICS ones, this will be your best bet for battery life, stability, and smoothness. I ran Calkulin's for a long time and his rom is good but Blazer definitely gets better battery life.

Try them all but some good advice is until you get comfy with flashing and the little changes from the OG Evo to the Epic, I would just flash stock custom roms and leave those ICS roms alone like the poster above me just said. No need to bork your new phone so fast incase you do something wrong. Also stay away from the Touch recovery until they do some more testing on it... Just my opinion

I'd recommend both Calkulin's ROM, and Blazer ROM at the current time (And they're both excellent developers, so i'd think their future releases will be good also)... not to say the other ROM's available aren't good, I just personally haven't used them so I can not speak on something I haven't experienced. I expect a lot of ROM's to be released soon based on ICS, so the ROM recommendation might change soon.
Welcome, enjoy your new phone

Thanks for all the recommendations. Honestly, I haven't had much of a reason to root the device. The main reason I rooted the Evo was to get rid of Sense, and increase battery life.... needless to say I have neither of those problems on the E4GT.
I'll probably just root but stick with the current ROM I'm running so that I don't have to start from scratch. Once the ICS roms become more stable, I'll look into those.

Honestly, that's what I am doing. I have a stock ROM with root and CWM... and I'm observing the ICS progress and waiting for a decent, stable ROM/Kernel/Recovery then I'll make a change. My phone is important to me, so I observe to watch the testing and such before diving in.

I kept it stock myself and its been very well.... Bought my et4g about a week ago also for 200 bones... Frekaing steal basically

There are several Alpha/Beta ICS roms out right now but I would strongly suggest using the older ones for now. Too many people are bricking their phones trying to run ICS. If you must do ICS I would suggest completely restoring your phone back to 100% stock and then installing ICS to a stock/unrooted rom.
I personally am using Calkulin's EL29 (v.2.8.1) rom with the EL29 Kernel and EL29 baseband. It is Gingerbread 2.3.6 but it is insanely stable, extremely responsive; especially if you don't use the TouchWiz but instead use GoLauncher.

I rooted mine so i could delete twiz and all the bloat, then i found team nocturnals dark ics blend rom and flashed it and the fb21 modem and life is good, got rid of all the ugly colors and twiz and fb21 modem increased my 3g data from 100kbps to 1mbps now when i use my og evo it looks dirty from the lower screen quality and its sooooo laggy compared to thia beast

Cm9 ftw! It's a few more steps at the moment to flash and get some fixes for gps and ext sd to work, but it's so beautiful on this phone. I can't stand tw and all the bloat.

[Q] best rom

I have been using Bonsai 4.0 for a long time. I would like to get a gingerbread ROM.
Which one would be the best?
I need good battery life.
I need good GPS.
I need no crashes.
Thanks everyone!

Really your results may vary from others expierence so with that taken into account try Legendary 2.2. I used that for a while and was able to squeeze out around 18+ hours in low signal areas. I don't know if the gps is alright but there is a fix and its not a flashable it has to do with permissions. Also you can add the newest samurai kernel with that. Since your on an old rom I'm sure you have no clue about the mtd and bml partitions available so be cautions on what you download and flash. If your on bml make sure the kernel is as well.
Another suggestion is try cm7 with the samurai kernel. If 4g isn't a deal breaker.

I personally reccommend Clean GB MTD. Its super stable for me and doesn't inlcude to much extra stuff that pulls from you battery. I like something simple and functional so this was my pick. Also if you decide to use it make sure to read about MTD first in android development because it functions quite differently.

I changed from Bonsia to CleanGB MTD over a week ago & REALLY like this new rom.
Much faster & smoother. My vote is for CleanGB MTD......
Do a little reading first though.....
Ok, like the OP, I have been running Bonsai 4.0 from day 1. (I guess it works so well, we never look for upgrade? or maybe the 4.1 brick fiasco scared us off, lol)
Epic 4g flashed to cricket, rooted, CWM 3.0, ext4, goLauncher. fairly happy, but could use some more speed and battery, plus new toys are FUN. So....
Let's have it out. Here's what my research has turned up:
Bonsai 4.1.3 (stable, but froyo based)
vs
Sprint's new OTA GB update (don't really wanna unroot unless there's something amazing about this, plus as a cricket customer, can I even get this update?)
vs
Legendary
vs
CleanGB
vs
SleeperROM
I've heard a bit in this thread about SleeperVSCleanGB, but I'd like more comparisons, and to hear about any other candidates/factors we should be considering (Xtreme? will I lose ext4 by switching to MTD? should I care?)
thx a bunch for your time!
Yes you will lose ext4 by switching to mtd... but you gain yaffs2 which is much more stable than ext4... so no worries there... and I have tried every ei22 rom out and the best bml imo is legendary and the best mtd is viper rom or cleangb mtd.... being a cricket user you probably won't get the ota because sprint is who pushes it out... also if your using bonsais recovery you will need to flash cwm 5.0.2.7 (officially supported for our phones) before trying to upgrade to a custom ei22 rom... you won't lose root by going to any of the custom roms cuz root is already in the roms as you probably know... and imo ei22 is way better than froyo... only problem with ei22 was the gps (I never had any problems but most did) but all of the custom ei22 roms have the gps fix built in... happy flashing!

Personally my favorites are cm7 and miui.us, though I haven't tried any ei22 based roms.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Im on MIUI at the moment, but I've tried quite a few. You can read as many posts about how a certain ROM works. But, you won't really know what suits you and your phone until you try them out!
BTW- I Like MIUI a lot, except for how fast my batteries die(i carry a backup).
I go through both in LESS than 12 hours, easy! Then again, the problem may be with my phone or the charger i'm using, so don't let me discourage you.
I suggest CM7 but I'm bias as I assist with the development.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427645
Really the best thing to do is try all of them and see what you like best each phone reacts differently with different ROM. Many people report CM7 being the best battery wise but others have terrible results.
GPS wise most roms share the same GPS fixes so you shouldn't notice a difference between individual roms.
Cool, thx for the feedback. I will check out Viper, MIUI, and CM7 (been eyeing cyanogenmod for a while, but I thought they hadn't ported for Epic 4G yet?)
Also glad my fear of leaving ext4 is gone....by bye BML, hello MTD!
Now, if we can just get that ICS ported.....

Also seems like I should try the BML roms 1st, since if I want to switch back from a MTD rom, I have to Odin it, yes? (Seems the layers of complexity/risk go apps/themes/launchers/titanium backups/CWM restores/ODIN.... I feel like I want to avoid ODIN except in emergencies, lol)

Odin really isn't that bad as long as you don't use the stock cable and get a good one... a follow all directions to the T! And yes to go back from mtd you do have to odin... but like I said not that bad... I do it at least once a week...

For me, IMHO, it is a toss up between Clean GB and Starsky ROM (both MTD versions).

Not to sound like a prick or anything, but you have to consider that you are posting in a very opinionated forum, with a very broad question. That being said, I also believe everyone is entitled to said opinion SO....
I have to go with Calkulins Rom. I have yet to find a more stable Rom, and I check frequently. Couple that with Overstews ICS theme and you have a match made in Android heaven. Hope this helps.
Epic-ly tapped from my Galaxy S II
Maddoggin's rom is great and very stable. There are a few themes out for it, two of which are linked in the OP for the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21060706
However, if you want an overwhelming support for themes then mijjah has you covered with his rom and the themes he ports and improves upon. It's also stable for me though others report issues.

I'm using the xplod ROM and even though it's still beta and has a few bugs I use it my dd. I've used pretty much everyone ROM and enjoyed them all, but this and the unnamed ROM seem to be the best. I just wish the dev for unnamed would come back. He did the same thing on the infuse 4g.

@Zoidpilot i agree with you about the opinionated part but thats what i think we need everyone's opinion because im pretty sure the new guys come here and wonder which should they try 1st or which is the best, like i did so let the opinions rain and i hope no devs take any offense
Blazer ROM. No doubt about it.
Have used it since v1.2, and current v3.7 has not disappointed me at all.
Caulks, 80% of roms are based on his.
I am currently on Blazer Rom, HAven't tried any others but love the ics look
Calkulin's rom is the base for so many other roms. Calkulins all the way
Seems like this is a pretty common question in the Q & A. And almost always, Calk's is at the top of the list.
If you prefer Odex and don't mind a very blue theme then you certainly want to try StrongSteve's ROM.
I 'm loving the Blazer ROM (ver. 3.7) so far. Stable snappy, great battery life and a cool ICS theme.

I haven't flashed every single rom out there. I was using stock + rooted only for the first few months.. and definitely nothing wrong with that if that's your thing. Just get rid of the bloatware and you should get decent battery life.
Having said that, I'm on BlazerROM 3.7 and my wife is on Calks 2.8.1 ROM. Just flashed both our phones last weekend. We're both happy with them so far and have no problems with GPS issues, hot reboots, freezes, ect. We seem to get about the same battery life too.. maybe my wife's is a little better since she's under volted a bit.
I would say nandroid and flash away until you find something you like. Its not hard to do and flashing doesn't take too long. You'll probably take longer downloading the ROM's themselves.. lol. But for themes, Blend ROM seems to have a lot of support
Can't really say better/best as I've only run 1 rom since about 3 days after I got this phone... calk's. I've since added steadyhawkin's gunslinger kernel, and overstew's ics theme, and have nothing but good to say about any of it. Fast, stable, great battery life, and I love that he keeps the rom pretty close to stock so you can dress it up the way _you_ want (which is helped by the fact it seems most themes/mods support it) or stay with a pretty stock/tw look if that's your thing.
Again, nothing bad to say about other roms, or even to say that this rom is better -- it's just the 1st I tried, and it's done everything I want so I've never felt the need to even try anything else (as of yet -- looking like that *might* be getting close to changing but that's a WHOLE other story ).
I'm using ICS Passion on my vibrant, nice stock 4.0 feel.

I'm going to have to go with Blazer 3.7. I found myself on Calkulin's for a while but I got better battery life with Blazer 3.7. I really like Phamtom's theme work with 3.7. Everything looks nice, runs smooth, and I like the toggle set up more than any other ROM or mod. I haven't quit trying different ROMs, mods, and themes, I just always seem to end up on Stock Blazer 3.7 because it's so "perfect" in my opinion.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Best Battery award I would have to give it to Calkulin's 2.8.1 - The Con is that I was having problems with deep freezes every couple days where I would have to reboot my phone and I would notice a little lag when opening the app drawer for the first few seconds. The freezing was most likely due to the undervolt and Haven't tried the other optional undervolts he has posted yet to remedy the Issue.
Best visuals I would have to give it to StrongSteve's ROM. That blue is straight eye candy!!! The con is that it was giving me worse battery life than I was use to on Calkulin's, but nothing really to complain about honestly. And I like how the keyboards was the swype with the dragon go option by default.
Best Rom so far award goes to Phantom Blazer in my book. This Rom ran the smoothest out of the three for me and battery life is very closely compared to Calkulin's 2.8.1 so far and looks very nice. My only request is that his swype keyboard had dragon go.
I'm a fan of UnNamed Rom.
Stable, fast, and long battery life.

Requesting ROM Recommendation

I'm going to be flashing an SGS2 for someone I know and I was wondering what a good setup as far as ROM, kernel, recovery, radio is for stability and features.
They upgraded from a LG G2x running CM7.2 Nightlies so they have basic experience with custom ROMs, but they don't know all that extreme technical crap.
I'm thinking about Juggernaut because it has a lot of good tweaks and features or maybe CM7 since they aren't many thing on the non-working list.
Please reply with any helpful suggestions, I'm considering flashing an ICS ROM but I'm not sure if it would be stable enough for daily use.
Thanks
The ICS ROMs are suitable as DDs, so take your pick! Choose any of the T-Mo Leaks!
As of now, the kernels that come with the ICS ROMs are as is, so no worries there.
For Gingerbread, if you choose the Darkside ROM, it has a special kernel, made directly for the ROM, but you can still swap out for a different kernel.
With CM7, you can only use the kernel that's meant for it.
All other Gingerbread ROMs are customizable as you see fit.
I hope that helps!
Whatever ROM you choose, you can always ask more questions in its Thread!
I'd say
Dark side
Beast mod
Juggernaut
Not in any specific order
I'd lay off the ics unless your buddy is gonna update it often

I think I'll go with one of those modified ICS leaks and stay away from the AOSP until it goes into RC quality.
Mostly from CM7 he liked the custom gestures, audio tweaks and such. He really just wants good battery to last a while and has zero tolerance for lag so V6 will come in good use. I'm a port dev so I'll be able to throw in the beats libs and dsp manager.
How is the battery stats on the ICS leak?

For ICS use [ROM][ICS] :ARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.2:: [BETA2 [UVLC8][WiFi CALLING][5.06.2012]. I run it as my every day ROM and its nothing short of amazing. If you don't want ICS use [ROM] Telus SGH-T989D Stock, Rooted, Lightly Tweaked, 100% [CIQ Free] with [KERNEL] Synergy v0.10 [CK3+, Autogrouping, OC, UV, BFQ, BLN, OTG] it gets crazy battery life but is getting old.
Also be sure to wipe your phone via [TOOL]:ARKSIDE::SUPER::WIPE[ext4][2.8.2012]

Personally, I'd take an AOSP GB build over leaked TW ICS builds. RC6 CM7 is rock solid stable with no real bugs and tons of customization. Every bit as smooth as TW ICS imo.

But the issue is he wants better than stock battery life and AOSP delivers the exact opposite of that. But I'll see what he wants between all this tomorrow. For most novice users that I flash roms for its about finding a perfect balance between performance, stability, and features. So in simple terms: Noobs always want everything to be perfect and don't understand the concept of how difficult debugging roms is.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
Personally. I wouldn't flash any ICS ROM's just yet. There are a few apps that I use daily that doesn't work with any of the leaked bases.
The GB ROM's that I liked were Darkside, Revenge of Macnut, Juggernaut, and Tuesday.

been using juggernaut5 for over a month now.....had the phone for about 4 hours before i had it rooted and rom'd. juggernaut has been very stable for me and i'm on the verge of trying out one of the ics roms built with the t989 kernel from tmobile-either romchicago or darkside.evolution
OK,
They want stability, performance, and battery life and I've heard about some recent superbricks in ICS for the SGS2 and Galaxy Note. So I think the best option for now is to stay on GB and go with Juggernaut 5 + Beats, DSP, V6 + whatever custom kernel. Final Decision. Or maybe ROMChicago if they feel lucky.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/tibt5/heads_up_superbrick_bug_present_in_ics_leaks_for/
Now since this should be flashed as fast as possible I've been thinking about how Samsung has ODIN and you can make custom images for it, so if I could just package the CWM, System ROM, kernel, and Blaze 4G radio into an ODIN package. Flash it in like 2 minutes, setup V6 and be done with it.
I've been searching for some guides to create packages but most of them only show how to create it as a backup from the current ROM.
personally, i love M&S's roms, especially Bombardier. It goes super will with Synergy kernel v.10, the battery life and performance is amazing!
OK, Let me just say that I'm sorry for this thread but it turns out the actual phone is a stock SGS 4G running Froyo.
I thank you all for your input anyway.

On a closing note, Again I wanna thank everyone for their responses and I review and write guides for ROMs so what I learned here won't go unused. Plus I'm sure someone else I know will want a SGS2 flashed.
This is the ROM I flashed for the SGS 4G in case anyone was wondering.

The phone got stuck in ODIN twice (guide didn't mention to uncheck repartition) and I had to use the one click unbrick to get into download mode again. At first I almost had a heart attack because I thought it need JTAG to fix. So thanks to the devs responsible for that tool.
Development for that phone is almost dead but if there's one thing I liked about the SGS1 series they had some awesome stock ROMs.
The most important lesson I learned is that using ODIN is like playing with fire: It does cool s*** but it can ruin everything.

Question about stable roms for e4gt

Hello guys so I was browsing through the threads but couldn't quite find an answer to my question so I figured I would post this. I currently have a photon 4g and my wife has a e4gt she doesn't need anything fancy as far as roms go but I did have her on an older version of blazers rom that kinda messed it self up so since ICS was out I flashed her back to rooted stock, but the ICS stock build has been complete garbage on her phone massive problems with 4g data losing connectivity, nad just an overal slugish and glitchy feel to it. I want to flash her back to an ICS rom but I wasn't sure what the most stable one out now is. I have cm9 on my photon and I can put up with the glitches but I didn't know if cm9 was more stable on the e4gt or if another rom would be better for her. Like I said something basic is fine just stable is all she needs cause she is not very tech savy. I would appreciate your guy's opinions on roms because I haven't been keeping track of the progress for the e4gt. thanks again.

I can't speak for the other ROMs but use CM9 nighlies as my daily. The only issues for me are known; No PRL/Profile update unless you flash temp EL29 ROM, occassional issue with custom rings going back to system sounds, etc. Certainly no deal breakers anyway.
You could always flash manufan721's rom..its awesome...lol..just kidding...what it sounds like shes looking for is maybe a close to stock rom with decent tweaks...any of calkulins roms would be good..not overthemed..nothing fancy, but it doesnt need to be with calks name behind it..just check development thread, flash it and update the kernel..the layout of rom wont be overwhelming and she'll be happy...then you can flash my rom for her..lol

I would appreciate your guy's opinions on roms because I haven't been keeping track of the progress for the e4gt. thanks again.

its not stock..and its ics..but its damn good..go with the Blue Kuban

The sad truth?

Is the sad truth that our phones will never be as smooth as it was while running gingerbread?
is it just me or will our phones ever live up to the stability of GB? I have used every ROM since I bought this phone..and GB is the "pinnacle" of software for our phone.
Now this is my first Android phone but is this the case with other phones? I.e. the software shipped with the phone is the best suited version.
Just trying to see if anyone feels the same way as I do...
Well the phone was built around that OS. Guess its like having a PC that came with XP and wanting to throw on a custom made Windows 8 OS on it.

I'll have to politely disagree
I actually have have my phone feel more smooth on ICS and even more smoother on jelly bean.. I was on ginger bread stock for the longest time before I found out about xda and my experience has been way better since then... I even reverted back recently to try a GB Rom and felt like my experience was still better on ICS /JB
But I understand where u coming from. Every one has different experiences

Sure, I agree that ICS and JB are way better than GB..much "sexier" to have. Matter fact, JB has sucked me back in to loving my phone. However, the argument is that no matter how hard the devs try, who do a damn good job, GB will be far and away the best OS for our phone. This includes stability, dependability and of course battery life, among other things :good:
Its not our phones fault sprint gave us a jacked ota :/
Gb wasn't always 'perfect' but ics, and eventually jb we'll most likely be just as pleasing as gb, If not more, with more features. Just give her time

Just you. Here I am rocking CM9b1.
I totally feel what your saying..cuz other phones on sprint have smooth stock ics other than ours..we can go back and fourth but the fact of the matter is samsung and sprint released a half a** update for ics ..and god bless the developers trying to improve the ics experiance!

Could not agree more. I am back on gb after using ics for a while its insane the stability and smoothness of this phone on gb. Ics is smooth but gb just destroyed it on our phone!

ICS is working fine fine with me.

I also agree that Ics does not match gb YET. But they are making progress fi03 has shown us hope of that. It looks a little smoother and showing major improvement I'm both battery and signal. So Sammy is listening and working to smooth out ics. Keep in mind that there is even a newer build that we don't have yet fi06 who knows whats fixed in that. And I am willing to bet we will get some more drops this month of they continue with this pattern . So let's try and stay optimistic Sammy definitely has the financial backing now to afford good support for there devices. And since the s2 is still selling very well Sammy is continuing support and with Motorola making such a public announcement about there jb support you know sammy is gonna compete with that. So even of ics doesn't become perfect they will probably get it right in jb. Either way a little patience and optimisim will go a long way the future looks bright for our phone.

I honestly never had an issue with ICS even with the past leaks besides the Wimax bug which is now fixed. Maybe phones have different effects to software. Idk but that emmc bug never affected me and I used the stock recovery to wipe more than once on several occasions lol..

You guys must not be doing clean installs with full wipes and just doing the ota update. I haven't had any issues with ICS or JB, but I always do a thorough wipe before flashing anything and I only use aosp based roms, like AOKP or PA. I'm not a fan of TWiz so I only run it long enough to do PrL and Profile updates  if you're having issues with ICS or JB I recommend doing a thorough wipe and then flash a rom and start fresh, left over data and incompatible apps can cause all kinds of issues. I think the only reason the carriers don't wipe data on OTAs is cuz its easier to listen to ppl ***** about the update sucking than it is to listen to em ***** the update erased all their games and apps . They should just force data wipe on OTA and use the Google sync function to restore most data after a clean install, but still people would complain they lost their texts and other assorted crap that if its honestly that important should be getting saved to their external SD cards anyways, cuz if the phone breaks you're gonna lose your sh!t atleast if its on the external SD you can salvage it

Yes I do every time. Try flashing back to el29 run it for a day or two then flash back to ics and tell me you don't see the difference. It's pretty night and day. I am willing most people that are satisfied with ics are either just happy that's it's a little but better than the ff18. **** we were given or aren't comparing it to el29 maybe cause they never ran it or it's been So long they forgot what it feels like. When you flash back to el29 coming from ics that actually feels like the upgrade. Especially on ph 4.1

Cm9 is a smoother experience to me at least. Also I'm getting even better battery life than on calks 3.0

This is my thought exactly. We had what, 3 or 4 official builds of GB before they got it right? And we are on number 2 for ICS.
And with that being said, I am not having any problems with ICS. The last two leaks are running great and I don't miss GB at all.
Everybody has there own experience and opinions, this is just mine.

I agree with the OP. GB was a much more stable experience. I've flashed dozens of roms both clean and keeping user data and while ICS/JB are definitely improvements to the OS feature-wise, they tend to fail at stability including bugs, battery life, reception, and performance. I've only found one ICS rom that has actually managed a better battery life than calk's EL29 GB and that's re-calked 1.9. As far as reception goes, I get 0-1 bar on ANY ICS/JB rom/kernel/modem combo I've tried here at work and I always get 1-3 bars on GB combos such as EL26 or EL29. Performance is much better on GB for the simple reason that there's less stuff and the improvements in OS efficiency are not enough to offset the increased resource usage of all those cool new features. I also have yet to find an ICS/JB rom that handles scrolling as well as GB... with 4.x when you scroll it's either manually by holding your finger and dragging slowly to pan down or it's superobnoxiously fast and you go from top to bottom but have a hard time scrolling to anywhere just shy of the top or bottom without manually panning to those points. On GB the scrolling is slower so on a long page it may take a while to get to the bottom but at least you can scroll to any point fairly easily once you get used to the scrolling speed. ICS/JB roms have bugs too... mostly minor little annoyances that aren't worth asking a dev to fix. App compatibility is another huge hit for 4.x roms as is the major wifi bug that every 4.x rom I've tried has had which causes the wifi to show as connected after a wakeup but you can't even access google.
Yes, there are certainly some features about ICS/JB which I really enjoy and this is why I keep flashing more roms in the hopes that maybe eventually I'll stumble across the perfect rom/kernel/modem combo to make my phone uber. Re-Calked 1.9 with Agat's 5.4 and FH23 has so far been a decent step in that direction but it's still not perfect as the wifi problem still exists and scrolling is still ICS scrolling but one of these days I'll find the perfect non-GB rom.
Well it seems some people arent understanding my post. Sure, cm9 is great. Ive been running pa cm10 for the past week cause its been so fun. But the best GB ROMs have given me the best experience even it wasn't as "fun"
Maybe idk how to flash properly or my phone sucks lol
