Hello.
I just got a new Galaxy Nexus, it has around 24 hours of use.
It randomly restarts itself.
I am was able to replicate this, even if device was set to factory reset and no software installed, I go to a blank home screen, go to live wallpapers preview, pick the first one (some interactive dots animation), now while previewing wallpaper if I rotate the device in landscape and portrait around 5-10 times it freezes and restarts itself.
I tried factory reset from menu and the ones from the forced boot menu "Android System Recovery", issue remains.
The OS version is 4.0.4 (it says it is latest), I am wondering if newer ones can fix this or I should just return the phone?
Anyone else can try the above ? (Rotating the live wallpaper preview multiple times fast).
I am VERY disappointed because I really like all the rest

Any ideas? I posted a video of the issue ^.
return the phone. if its broken out of the box, then get it returned, don't screw around with it.
If returning is a Hassel, I would put stock Google image of 4.1.1 and check.

Does it do it with all lwp's? Or are you just hunting for a flaw with completely UN-natural behaviors of rotating 10 times in the lwp preview screen? Can't check mine, not many run "stock" around here .
*edit* Gave up at 30 rotations with phase beam (I don't have the bubble one) and device never rebooted. Running 4.0.4 custom rom.
good day.
@chopper the dog: Thanks for trying, it did that in other live wallpapers too (like the sound Spectrum one).
Mine is probably related to sensor and not live wallpaper, first time I noticed it I was in photo gallery and rotating the device.
@atifsh: I would like to test the 4.1.1 but the normal update doesn't come (it is a YAKJUXW if that matters).
Is there an easy and warranty safe method to put the 4.1.1 from Google?
Today I got another one (in same country, DIFFERENT company/store), unsealed it, tested in screen saver, it instantly restarted itself. So I rejected that one and keept the previous phone, this must be a software problem, right?
Mine has just barely started crashing, like within the last few days it randomly resets EVERY day. I am rooted, not sure what rom i installed on it, but its running 4.1.1 and franco's kernal. I am wondering if it has to do wtih live wallpapers. Its starting to get very annoying, especially when I am navigating around town and resets.
@adamhlj maybe you have another issue, I seen someone on youtube demonstrating how Galaxy Nexus restarts itself when losing Wi-fi connectivity, you mentioned resets while navigating around town, so it might be related.
Now about my issue, I updated from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 official images using this thread info and no restarts so far (~3 days).
Now in live wallpapers if I try hard enough (rotating many times) I can make it generate a force close of live wallpapers ("Sorry live wallpapers closed") but...
no restarts anymore.
Good for you. Hope you used fastboot commands and not some tool kit.
on my semi broken gnex on 4.1.1, the problem doesn't exist

It restarted itself when I was out far away from any wifi signal. I was using it as my GPS on a road trip. I wasn't particularly happy when it reset, tho fortunately I was still in an area of good data reception so I could re-route.
And I have removed the live wallpaper, and the phone has stopped crashing.

Same here! I tested it for a few days , it seams Live wallpaper activity forces it to randomly reboot. I didn't notice it at first because I always run live wallpapers. (renown ones, not just any LWP). 2nd day no reboot with a regular wallpaper..within hours of using it, rebooted three times in less than half a day. Keep in mind, its just on by my computer desktop or counter. No activity.
I don't have any issue when rotating my live wallpapers back an forth from portrait to landscape quickly numerous times in preview or home screen on my galaxy nexus 4.2, not 1 reboot, freeze or lag, you must have a faulty gnex or try updating to 4.2 an see if that helps.

Hey guys, i need some advise here!
For weeks, i anxiously waited for the mailman to bring my my GNex and for a few days im very happy with it. Unfortunatly, the major plus of android, it never freezes, isnt true for my brand spanking new Gnex!
Seeming randomly, the phone freezes, refusing all input from the screen and the On/Off button. This happens about every 20 hrs.
Ususally i advise people with this problem to exchange their phone with a different one, but im afraid i wont get a stock 'yakju' build back in return, so want to try to fix (or at least determine) the problem first.
Can you guys give me some tips on how to get to the bottom of this?
Thanks in advance!
Info:
Model: Galaxy Nexus (GSM)
Android version: 4.0.1
Smalbandversion: I9250XXKK1
Kernel: [email protected] #1
Build: ITL41F (yakju)
And again, it's all stock
...
i had a lot of problems with the 4.0.1 fw, have you tried updating the phone to 4.0.2 it solves a lot of bugs!
I tried to update the phone through the system update menu in the settings, but it listed my phone as 'up to date'. I find this is odd, since i have a Nexus ánd the Google build
Is there a way of updating the phone without a lot of hassle?
I looked into it, in the Netherlands the 4.0.2 update should roll out in a few days. If it isn't, I'm going to flash it myself! Were your problems with 4.0.1 similar to mine e.g. crashes and freezes?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
In my experience most of the time when that happened was caused by 3rd party apps that weren't ics optimized.

Well freezes and crashes maybe, but the whole phone unresponsive? Isn't there a try/catch somewhere which prevents this kind of 'dirty code' to crash the whole OS, anyway there should be.
Also, ( I forgot to mention this in #1) the phone reboots sometimes while its active as well as when its idle. The rebooting is always paired with a loud *click*

That exact thing happened to me yesterday as well (running 4.0.1). I pulled down the notification bar, clicked on the email notification, and when the notifybar started collapsing again, the animation stopped, sound was caught in a loop, and two seconds later my phone rebootet with a clicking sound (I hope that it was just the speaker reacting strangely to the sudden signal loss...!)
The same day, the Nexus kind of crashed while I was streaming internet radio to my bluetooth speaker. The music kept on playing fine, but I wasn't able to turn on the screen. Even holding the vol+/- and power buttons only shut the phone down, but I couldn't restart before I removed the battery.
I really hope this is gonna be fixed with the 4.0.2 / 4.0.3 firmwares. This thing is crashing a little too often right now, for my taste
I'm getting the same problems as noted above. I've just picked up the nexus to move away from Apple's iPhones, but I'm left wondering I've made a serious mistake in doing so. An added problem is that the crash has also occurred when I've been recharging the battery while asleep- so the alarm I set did wake me.
Honestly, it's an unreliable product. I'm a customer, not a Samsung lab rat.
Got the same issue. 2 crashes in 4 days. Not a huge problem for me yet, but 4.0.3 better fix it.
Well most of my problems went away when i updated my phone. You should definitely try to update. Personalty I went straight for 4.0.3. The best ROM i've tested is definitely Android Open Kang Project :http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11455-rom-android-open-kang-project-maguro-build-13/
Everything just went so smooth and bugfree as far as i can tell. And i love the quick setting he put in notification bar.
You can see how to unlock your phone here using the gn toolkit :

I had those kinds of crashes, too. My phone would crash maybe once every 3-4 hours on 4.0.1... doing anything. Whether it be idle, with no extra services (factory reset), or while composing messages. Anything would do it.
Anyway, I rooted the phone and I've been on Bigxie's ROM since V1 (AOSP 4.0.3) and the issue stopped, for the most part, except for an idle reboot every 18-28hrs. Suspecting it was kernel related, I swapped out the Apex kernel and threw on Franco's... since then, my phone can run for almost two days (of moderate usage) without a charge.
Any of you guys enabled 'force 2d hardware acceleration'? I don't know how relevant it is, but all my problems went away when I stopped to use this function.

Well this is exactly what is happening to me on my phone, it reboots every 2 days or so. sometimes it becomes completely unresponsive, the keyboard doesnt open up or of it does, it doesnt accept any input
even the settings page starts crashing, i dont know what is going on
it works ok otherwise but this crashing and becoming unresponsive is really driving me crazy. i have 4.0.1 as i am in the UK and since they are not releasing 4.0.3 for such a long time here, it means the fixes available in it is not really for stability and maybe they are for LTE version available in the US
Also, I dont have the 2d acceleration checked off already, so not sure what else to do to fix it. should i return the phone???

U sure it's not a software u installed recently? For me changing back to the stock music player fixed the random crashing.
In general, I can say some apps are not stable at all.
I experience random crashes too, although they coincide with the sudden loss of signal, as described in these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390816
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387943
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20816554
I have started to make some logs to try to identify the cause of this problem. I use Log Collector for making a log and No Signal Alert to obtain a time stamp when the signal drops. What I see in the logs is that just before the signal drops I notice an entry in the log something like "process:com.lookout has died". Could this have something to do with the Lookout app I have installed or is it just coincidence that the app and a certain Android process have the same name?
By the way, does anybody know if there are websites or people who can analyze the logs I have created? Most of the content is mumbo jumbo to me and a knowledgeable person might be able to shed some more light on what happens inside the phone and what might trigger this problem.
I just upgraded to 4.0.2 on Thursday, but the problem persists.
Android version 4.0.2
Baseband Version: I9250XXKK6
Kernel Version: 3.0.8-gaaa2611

Well i guess you tried already to remove the lookout app right?
My GSM Nexus with stock 4.02 (unrooted) freezes randomly too.
When it occurs i cannot switch the screen on using the power button. Only thing that helps in this state is pulling the battery.
Iam starting to get extremely annoyed by Google/Android because my previous smartphone the Nexus One was also buggy ever since the Gingerbread update while beeing perfect with Froyo.
It's definately my last Android device if this will not be fixed with 4.03.
The phones are way too expensive to be a happy participant of a perpetual Google beta.

Are you sure it's the OS not some buggy/incompatible apps? I've had the phone since launch and it never froze even once. Stock 4.02 too.
And you should try out different OS. Then you will know what suits you.
I love this phone. But it freezes. A lot.
Mine does, my workmates does, as does my friends. So that's three people including myself and all of our phones are faulty. They are using stock roms and kernels. I'm using MCR, but I've experienced it on stock, and every other rom that I've tried. The absolute longest uptime I've seen is probably 2 days, and it reboots even when it's just sitting on my desk doing nothing. Does yours?
Edit:
I also use stock kernels, no OC/UV
No mine is very stable. I have up time of over 1000 hours before I rebooted my phone.

I did do (lock-ups, battery pulls), yes - when I was on ITL41D. But not since I got the ICL53F update. I think that ITL41F was susceptible to lock-ups too, from memory.
Nope. Not on stock or otherwise. Only reboots I have had is when I undervolted too much, other then that, rock soild.

Mine has been fine other than with UV Kernels and UVing too much. But, I mean, duh.
OP...list your apps that you have downloaded.
Most likely an app not liking ics is the culprit.

Haven't had any lockups. Do you guys have certain apps in common?
Nope.

Slacker.com - which i love - causes my phone to revoot everytime i use it. Nothing else jas done it before. I agree, i bet there is a common app causing the problem.
I had random reboots in stock with NO apps installed but since updating to 4.0.4 haven't had anymore. If your phone locks up, instead of pulling the battery try holding power and both volume keys to force a restart.

The only time it's happened to me was with the Chrome Beta. Did it twice, batt pulled, then did it a third time (after I was playing with the phone for an hour after the second reboot). Basically, fired up Chrome, went to a page, crash, reboot.
Uninstalled, wiped, no issues.

I thought the same since going to 4.0.4. But as I was At dinner last night, I had the phone on the table and saw it reboot. And thanks for the tip, I never knew that you could force a reboot like that - I will test next time
As for the apps that I have installed, I went a bit nuts during the Google sale recently, so there are quite a few.
But the apps that I use regularly are:
Whatsapp, Kakaotalk, stock browser and Google chrome (not chromes fault since I've only just started using it), Instafetch, Alarm Clock Extreme, Facebook, RSA Secure ID, Gmail, Tasker (have tried turning this off, no difference), camera, gallery, YouTube, phone, Lastpass, TripView, Trackball Alert Pro (also tried removing this, no diff), SwiftKey X (tired removing this - no diff), Root Explorer, Titanium Backup Pro, ROM Manager Pro
Apps that have running services:
WhatsApp, TelstraOne, Tasker, Trackball Alert Pro, KakaoTalk, Dropbox, SwiftKey X, misc Google services, HaxSync
There have bpeen times when one or another app has been removed to troubleshoot the issue (At one point I thought it was Juicedefender).
Stiill no dice.
This sucks!
Not regularly but yeh this happened to me yesterday, screen wouldn't come on and had to pull battery. Nearly shat myself because the last time that happened it went into a boot loop and I had to wipe my phone, luckily it didn't this time!
My GNex doesn't regularly reboot, but when it does, its always while its charging and while I'm in the messaging app. In fact, just a few hours out of the box. No additional apps, etc. Stock. The messaging app seems to not be as stable as it should be. When it does start to reboot, it freezes and has a glitchy screen with black lines in random places =/.
mine seems to freeze on the lock screen quite a lot. the physical buttons work but the soft buttons don't and the screen is unresponsive to touch commands to unlock ( i have the slide pin screen).
this has happened around 4 times in as many months thought - so not a major problem. it does, however, randomly power cycle sometimes - even when not in use at all!
The only time any of my Android phones ever have freezing or reboot issues is when I screw with the kernel and clock speeds. I haven't messed with the kernels or clock speeds on my nexus and haven't experienced any rebooting or freezing.
Just my $0.02.
Mine does on stock as well annoying when u are showing off to Steve's followers.
Google needs to continue upping the game. Not yet there. By the way on 4.02 GSM

My CDMA/LTE version is stock/locked. I've had it for about 2 weeks and it's bootlooped twice that I know of. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+ does the same thing from time to time.
OGP was getting laggy so I restored to factory stock. I was surprised though that the phone remained rooted, which I guess is good. I then installed FreeGee and went with CWM, same as it was before the restore.
Now, a few weeks later, I'm having some issues with the keyboard and the Home screen wallpaper. About once or twice a day (on most days), for some unknown reason, my keyboard will revert to the Android keyboard (AOSP) from the LG keyboard that I have it set to. When I "correct" it to the LG keyboard, sometimes the "Extended keyboard" option is checked and other times it's not (I always leave the extended keyboard checked). I also will occasionally get a notification on the pull-down that I need to select a keyboard.
The other issue is that the Home screen wallpaper also seems to change itself back to the default blueberry paper. This only happens on the home screen, and it does not affect the lock screen wallpaper. The wallpaper issue seems to happen at different times than the keyboard issue.
I've also had the phone reboot itself once or twice since the restore...both times while in its holster. Only reason I know this is that I hear the AT&T boot music playing in the background. Upon viewing the phone, it's verified that it is in fact rebooting.
Anyone else having these issues, or know the cause?

Guess nobody else is having this issue.
The spontaneous rebooting has stopped, as has the "extended keyboard" issue.
What remains is the wallpaper and default keyboard changing issues. They both change at the same time now, about once a week.
What I was able to nail down is that this happens after every time titanium backup (free version) does its weekly thing. I have no idea what setting(s) I may have enabled to cause this. Anyone have an idea they can help out with?
I have the exact same problem with my home screen wallpaper changing. Ive had my optimus since about july and the first time it did it was like 2 weeks after i got the device. Kept doing it even tho i would change it back and not do anything with it regarding the screen. Wasnt sure what to make of it but whatever. It didnt do it again until yesterday (24th) and it wouldnt stop. Had to change my screen back like 5 times, and i just woke up a little bit ago and it was different again. The phone was just laying there. Didnt touch it so i have no clue. Ive tried going thru the settings to see if maybe i had checked something or whatever and im pretty sure i didnt. Only thing i can think of is that is just a glitch with the phone. I like the phone too much so thats not enough to get me to wanna get rid of it.

Are you running Titanium Backup?
If all else fails, you can always restore to stock and reinstall your apps and other items. Then maybe you will be able to determine what is causing the issue.
So I have had the note 4 (retail version) for a few weeks now. It is quite nice being no root.
The only issue I have started to see is randomly when I unlock my phone there will be a crash report with just a picture of my lockscreen and nothing else. Today I attempted to go into my contacts and it crashed 4-5 times until I waited for a few seconds then finally got in. Has anyone else experienced these issues before?
I have not loaded any apps that are out of the norm, I am fairly tech savvy as I deal with technology for my job. I haven't yet had time to try a full factory reset on it as I also use this as my work phone (I own it though).
Yes I'm getting many crashes at this point and it's very aggravating. First it was Contacts, then other apps including Pandora, a music app, Gallery, and one other I can't remember at the moment. It happens many times per day now (probably about once per hour), though isn't fully predictable yet. Audio has also begun cutting out periodically when streaming music over Bluetooth. I've wiped cache and done a factory reset, but neither has produced a change.

Hmmm, anyone else having issues with this? Wondering if a few bad phones went through the line. I've had quite the busy weekend dealing with being in a accident and such so i haven't wiped my phone to see if that affects anything.
I've been getting the occasional Contacts crash, for reasons still unknown to me. I haven't had anything else really going on though. I've had my phone since December.
Though slightly related, I did have a strange behavior last night where the phone screen would not timeout and turn off on its own, even while on the lock screen. A reboot fixed that. I've never had that happen before.

From what I have been reading in other forums, the " unfortunately contacts have stopped " has to do with google+. This issue just popped up recently and is happening on various devices and different carriers. So it's not just vzw Note 4. Disable or Uninstall updates seems to work. Hopefully the issue will get resolved with a Google+ update.

It's quite interesting how Google+ has been causing issues. I came from the Lg G3. Google+ and Verizon's app did not like each other and would crash constantly until google+ was disabled.
If you're having reboot problems please post here - if there are problem apps or bad devices out there it would be good to know!
Got a new Nexus 5X yesterday for my partner. Plugged it in and charged all day (oh what patience). 10pm started setup and added account to it. Phone immediately did an update which succeeded. Then it started to install the saved apps from the Google account, about 50 in all. After all the apps were installed I handed it over to her to play and log into all those apps with logins. Tedious.
Within about 30 minutes she tried to take a photo and it rebooted. Then a bit later she was using it and it rebooted again. Before going to be it rebooted a few more times. Then again this morning. There wasn't one particular app or other that was in use when these crashes happened. During the day she saw a message about "Google needs to restart". Also the camera often comes up with an all black screen and can't be used.
I called Google tech support and they wanted to do a factory reset and maybe a cache partition wipe. They would also like to investigate if a rogue app is causing the crashes by using it without any apps installed. Because reinstalling apps is so tedious I decided to have her do a cache partition reset I'm awaiting news. I'm hoping we don't have to do the other... I can't imagine how a bad app could be causing such repeated crashes (well I can, but it just shouldn't happen). That's lame...
It would really help if it was easy to get a crash log and find out the cause - unfortunately unless you're rooted this doesn't seem to be easy, and may well be impossible.
I've been having a lot of similar-sounding issues with my 5X. It's never rebooted while I was using it, but once or twice a day I'll pull it out of my pocket and it will be off, awaiting the unlock pattern to boot up.
The camera has been atrocious as well. I've seen the black screen you describe, tons of rotation lag, hanging, etc. Not just in Camera, but in other apps using the camera (such as when attaching a photo to a Hangout). Hoping this is something software-related and not a hardware problem.
I've had mine spontaneously reboot twice so far, both times I've pulled it out of my pocket and it required the PIN to unlock, then it booted up. I'm a bit concerned, as I have no idea when this happened, and, since it's encrypted a reboot essentially puts me offline until I notice it.
I just now had mine reboot during active use for the first time. I was long-pressing a wifi network in order to forget it (which is another 5x problem I keep having—wifi turns itself off or connects to the wrong networks).
My 5x was working fine and the crashing started happening yesterday...
they only app that i recently installed before the crashes started was firefox... are you guys using firefox by any chance???
Mine is still working fine, I do not have Firefox.
Same problem for me when using Firefox. The phone seems to crash and reboot when loading news websites containing photos and videos.
Not seen the issue when not using Firefox.
I've had my nexus 5x since mid/late November 2015. I've had the problem described below happen prior to today, and more than once.
Today, I cant turn my phone off - it seems to be in the middle of a reboot... the four coloured circles (google logo?) with colours going round and round. I powered it off cos it had started going slow... thought a reboot might fix the problem... but now its not starting and I cant even turn it off or do anything with it.. I've tried pressing the power button, I've tried holding the power button down, and I've tried different combinations... nothing seems to make a difference... (has been in that state of un-useablity for at least 30 mins now)
Anyone else also having wi-fi issues where facebook has an error and "cant connect" ?
I had the same thing happen and returned the phone, it's the only solution I found. I factory reset multiple times, called up Google and they told me to safe boot. Right.. I was completely stock and it rebooted multiple times / day and I know what I'm doing too, for the most part anyway. Got a replacement device and it has not once rebooted no matter what I do. Camera, Chrome random apps caused a reboot, it's not that. It's a defective device and you need to get it replaced period.
I have the same thing and can't sent it back to google because I live outside the US.
I believe it is a manufacture defect as I tried everything with no success really annoying.
Stuck with a brick...

I used my phone completely stock for weeks and had zero issues, whereas I have a friend who ordered and received the phone at the exact same time (likely same mfg batch) and had issues. Difference between us two is that I'm a minimalist and only have about 50 apps installed, and he has a ton that he rarely uses and restores them every time.
I know it seems ridiculous, but having an android phone gives you more customization and your apps more power of the phone, so it's completely feasible for ONE rogue app to destroy performance and/or battery.
You guys might all want to try uninstalling apps one by one and figuring out which apps are killing performance. In particular, check out the running services (developer options -> running services) and see which apps are constantly running, since those are more likely to be the ones causing issues.
For example, I've used firefox (for adblocked browsing) for weeks recently, and can definitely say it's a pretty slow app, so if you're having issues on it, you may want to just use chrome or lightning browser.
I just ordered a replacement as well. Mine would reboot about 1 to 2 times a week right after the fingerprint unlock. Annoying as hell today because I was in the middle of a conf call.
