I hve been reading thru all the threads I can find. A friend of mine asked if I would root her Epic 4g, and thinking , since I have rooted the 4 I have had in the past year, it would be a breeze.
The root seemed to go fine, It rebooted, then went to instal titanium backup and Rom mgr, and the phone stuck on the Sammy screen. I have seen reference several times on placing your epic into DL mode via battery removal... Can someone please explain this to me in more detail, or point me in the right direction?? I appreciate any help I can get.

u don't remove the battery to get into download mode, you hold the '1' button while powering the phone on while it's not plugged in. don't use the cord that came with the epic, find another micro-usb.
I don't think you searched hard enough. Right at the top of Development in the "stickies" is this thread that tells you everything you need to know about getting your phone working again:

+1, always read the stickies first...
I read the stickies, and I have used Odin hundreds of times, I have a great data cord, (I have a friend that works for RIM and so I use the Blackberry data chords for my Data cables... What is happening, is that when the battery is replaced after removal, the phone starts back up immediately, not allowing me to press the 1 button. If I replace the battery while I am holding down the 1 button... it still will not go into DL mode. I have pulled the battery and let it stand for overnight with no battery in it... still does the same thing...

Don't use the battery at all. Odin without it and stick it in when it is all done. The USB provides the power. In that stickie thread it tells you to plug the phone into the computer without a battery and then hold the 1 key and then add pressing and holding the power key and download mode will pop up.

Yeah if the phone detects that you pressed the power button a microsecond ahead of the 1 key it will just boot.

It STILL didn't work! Ugh!! Dang... I have put all 4 epics that I have owned thru Flashing HELL! And everyone I have been able to bring back. This thing is tougher than this! Lol!! It needs the "walk it off" speech!! And what I don't understand is, why is it STILL booting on its own??? It is my understanding that the internal memory power fades after a couple hours and that then it will fall back to a completely shut off state?? I'm thinking a week in isolation w/o its battery... we'll see who the tough guy is then!! Lol!

Just for giggles, have you tried an odin with the sd card out?
Yes try it with the sd card out. It should not boot at all without the battery and just the usb cable.

I may have bricked my phone, and now won't power up at all. Here's what happened.
Last night I tried to unroot my phone in order to install EL30. First I powered phone into download mode. Then used Odin to install EC05, but Odin seemed to be taking forever, as the instructions said it would take 7-8 minutes... It appeared to be working but very slowly. So after half an hour, I decided to let it work overnight and went to bed, leaving the Odin screen running on computer and the phone with yellow "Downloading" on screen.
This morning, the Odin screen had several more lines of successful completed steps, but did not say "Finished" yet. The phone screen was off. I thought maybe the battery had died because perhaps in download mode maybe the battery wasn't charging? So I unplugged it from USB cord, put in a fully charged battery, and now to my problem...
Phone won't power up or do ANYTHING. I know of 3 methods to power up phone, (pwr button, #1 + pwr, volume up + camera + pwr) and none of them are doing anything. screen never changes from black. I've removed battery, tried powering up while plugged into usb/computer, with & without sd card, etc. It's like the phone is just broke!
HELP?!
Hold down the little pin next to the camera. Also wait for awhile and eventually itll go into download mode. Make sure you keep the battery out when trying to go into download mode.

Also, did you have repartition checked? Only auto reboot should be selected unless your coming from mtd.

DUDE THERES NO BUTTON [email protected]!?!$#%^?
To the OP:
Did you try leaving the battery out and having plugged into the back of the desktop *if of course its a desktop* and tried to go into download mode using the pc as its power source? Is it a nonstock cable that you used?. Its more than likely because you didn't have a non-stock cable or yours was bad and need a new one. Odin shouldn't take but 5 minutes top..... mine does it around 3:30 minutes..if it seems like its hangs then redo it pull the plug and start over. Usually factoryfs.rfs takes the longest around 2minutes.

First get a better cable, that's why the data wouldn't transfer. 2nd take out the battery and sd card, with Odin up on the computer connect the New USB cable and quickly put it into download mode and Odin away. At this point include the PIT and check repartition. You will need to put the battery back in after it succeeds and tries to boot. For mor tips sea+ch the Development forum for "How to recover a semi-bricked epic" there is a whole thread on it.

No luck on any of the suggestions above. Phone will not power up at all.
I removed battery and SD card, and plugged into usb cable with Odin open on computer and tried powering up phone into Download Mode (#1 + pwr), nothing (also tried holding #1 + pwr for a couple minutes patiently).
I have had a nightmare trying to find a usb cable and usb port on my computer that work together. No this is not the stock Samsung cable. I am using a cable that has worked for me in the past, but often times a cable/port that works one day won't work the next. So you are probably right in that my original issue getting Odin to download to phone last night may have been a cable problem, however my current problem is simply that the phone seems to be nothing more than a paper weight right now. Just won't power up at all.
And no, I didn't have repartition checked. Phone only had been rooted and CMW, no MTD.
Thank you all for your help, and eagerly awaiting additional suggestions?
Umm yeah man bad idea leaving it alone looks like its time to visit the morgue.... search online to see if someone will restore a solid brick its possible especialy if you cannt use a jig to get into download mode

I'm no pro a bringin epics back from the dead but in his condition I believe the phone is completely dead. I've done this to my phone on several different occasions just to get my phone replaced lol. My good friend works for a sprint repair center and he said that most times pulling the usb during odin will kill the device. I'm not tring to be pessamistic as I really hope you fix it but from what your saying then its VERY VERY unlikely! Especially if you hit repartition and then pulled the cord... if you don't belive me then try it and let me know how it goes lol

Probably 4 out of 5 of these bricks caused by a failed Odin have come back to life by popping the battery in and out and trying to get into download mode. I can count the number that I have seen never come back on my hands. Some people give up to soon, others found leaving it overnight and trying again has worked. But a lot have been revived. Also he did not have repartition checked so has an even better chance.
When you try to put in download mode without the battery are you holding the buttons down while plugging the cable in? If not then do it that way

i was running fc07 on my phone for the longest & yesterday decided to odin to fc15. the process got stuck during the modem part of it & took a long time (exceeding a half hour). i unplugged my phone & attempting to reboot it when the screen told me "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." i proceeded to download Kies on my computer; however, when i get to the firmware recovery, it is asking for a code. i dont know what to do. Did i brick my phone? Is there a way to odin to a system recovery? i have tried fc05 & ek02 & i get the smae results.
Remove battery, Press AND Hold VolDown continuing to hold as you replace battery. It may feel awkward to do this.
That should get you back into Odin D/L mode.
I have the same issue. I upgraded to FC15 and after a full charge this am. I made a call, did some email and text, then BAM! nothing. no lights, can't turn on, can't get into DL mode, can't do anything.....
any thoughts?? I think I am outta luck here.
Yes. Just directed by sfhub.
And odin using his one-click odin after you entered to download mode.

For me, I'm using sfhub's no-data version right now and no issues at all since it's released by him.

You held Power+VolDown or just Power (as you replaced the battery)?
If that doesn't work, you should try a usb jig.

Depending on how long you kept it there - and how well ventilated it was - the phone could have overheated. There have been similar reports where all they got was a blue LED light.
Have you tried pulling the battery out, wait until the capacitors on the board run out (you'll see the LED go out) and then re-inserting the battery?
Hopefully this will help it come back to life - you could try a different battery as well but it may just be easier to take it to Sprint and have them replace at that point.

Well, since it's been a while hopefully you let it sit and finish flashing FC15. I noticed the delay as well and stood there in horror as I waited to see if I now held a $550 paperweight....
...but then came the "Pass!" indication about a minute later. I'll post my thoughts on this update separately.
So if you didn't, let it go all the way through and you should be all set. And glad that it seems it was just a battery - they're certainly easier (and cheaper!) to replace than the entire phone.
well i let the phone sit for hours & i didnt get a pass....without a way to at least nandroid to a backup, i chalked it up as a lost and filed a claim...will be getting the new phone today at work. if anyone is interested in playing w/a phone that i believe is bricked let me know...im sure i can get it off for a cheap price....lol say no to fc15....lol
Hi All,
I tried to flash Jedi Master 16 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1958230 to my ATT unlocked E980 LGGP for T-Mobile. Now the phone is dead, i.e. not responding to anything. Please please help.
Rooting and installing recovering image, Optimus G Pro How to get ClockworkMod CWM and make a backup | LG Optimus Forums - Android Optimus Forums
were successful. Flashed the stock Jedi Master 16 ROM (no change to the zip) all seemed fine till the installer prompt me to reboot with successful installation message displayed. After confirming rebooting, the phone is no longer responsive. Battery is fully charged before I left it alone over night (~6hrs). Battery still had full voltage in the morning. Battery pulled/reinserted a couple times, volume down+home+power pressed many times. Phone still does not respond at all. Connected to the computer, and the computer said the device driver installation failed.
Searched everywhere and found mentioned "deep sleep" symptom. However, battery was not drained. The so called "bricked" seems to referring to looping in booting. Mine is simple not responding to anything at all with or without battery in, with or without wall charger connected, no matter what key/keys pressed.
I suspect that I should have put the right modem file into the Jedi Master 16 zip file.
Please help and thank you in advance.
I'm not even sure what to say.. Why the hell would you install a Samsung Note 2 ROM on your E980???
Can you at least get into recovery mode?
Pull battery then put back in
Hold vol-up+power+home until it passes the lg logo and goes black then release.
Are you in clockworkmod recovery?
My bad. Thought Jedi X is Note 2 specific and Jedi Master is somewhat generic.
Phone won't even boot. Screen is off, and no LED lights/sign of life anywhere with the battery trick and vol-up/down + power + home trick.
When the battery pulled and USB powered, the back and menu led flashed (white) once. Then no more sign of life no matter what key(s) + power buttons combo press.

2. Pull and reinsert battery, then press (vol-up/down) + (camera shutter) + (home) + (power button).
3. Left the phone alone for 6hr (no USB charging). Battery is at full voltage (4.12v). Then following step 1 or 2.

Dude you need to simply do this. Pull battery, put battery back in, hook to computer and while plugging in the cable to your phone, hold volume up and down. If you see the 'download mode' box in the middle of the screen, YOURE SAVED, IF NOT THEN YOURE ****ED!
Never flash anything unless you know what you're doing. I seriously advise you to do a serious amount of reading before ampting any flashing if anything!

Everything is bright and shine except the partition table is screwed up where all apps (like camera app) see there is no space in the internal sd card. Waiting on the external micro sd card to arrive. Hopefully that will make the phone usable (beyond just browsing and installing apps).
In this stage, I can't even root it since the rooter can't write onto the internal memory space. And Android Partition Manager Pro, who requires the phone to be rooted at first, won't help either.
Does any one know how to repartition without rooting? Thanks a lot.
This whole thread.....so painful. Some people should not be allowed to have a smartphone...keyword smart

I didn't have luck finding an answer to this on the forums so I figured I'd make a new post. I have been running a version (not sure which) of Liquid Smooth for a few months. Yesterday, I noticed my phone was on a boot loop. It would vibrate, show the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen and then turn off. I pulled the battery and memory card and tried again. It still wouldn't come on. I pulled the battery and then rebooted to recovery mode. I went there to wipe and reboot. When I tried to do that it said something like, "what you are looking for can't be found". I pulled the battery again but this time when I tried to turn it back on it did nothing. I have no vibrations, I have nothing on my screen. I'm not sure what could have happened because I haven't made a change to my phone for quite some time. Any ideas?

Battery is going bad or the hardware is going bad.
What recovery and version?
Have you tried booting into recovery or download mode?
Take battery out and put back in:
Recovery: volume up, home button, power
Download mode: volume down, home button and power

I'm not able to get the phone to come on so I don't know the versions of anything I've used. All I know is my phone is the T-999. Sorry, I know that's probably no help at all.
You don't have a spare battery do you? If not, you should see if you can find someone you know that has one. It could be that you battery just went bad.

I tried all of this but did not have any luck. The phone doesn't do anything. It doesn't make any sense how it can just stop working out of nowhere like this. Wouldn't it mess up immediately after I rooted/added a custom ROM if I did something wrong rather than a few months later? I'm afraid that the phone may be done for. : (

I hate to say it, but usually when something like this happens it's most likely to be hardware related. If you don't have access to a spare, go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a battery to see if it'll power up with a known good one. Batteries usually don't just die like that, but it can happen.
So you don't get a short vibe or anything out of it? What about when you hold the power button for about 10seconds? If you remove the battery and plug it in, do you get an led lit up? How about with the battery in?
If the battery turns out to be good, you could attempt the debrick method by KAsp3rd stickies in development. I don't see why it would be a brick, but at this point I'd try anything available just to be positive.
If you have insurance on it, it may be time to consider using it.
Sorry to hear this is happening to you man. These S3's are starting to get a little old though, and no matter how careful we are, they do suffer more abuse than any other electronics we may use. I'm seeing more and more posts like yours recently, I'm sorry to say.
Keep us updated on it, and good luck with it!
