Best option mate is the genuine samsung galaxy s3 hdmi. 99% others don't work. Trust me I made mistake and in the end I bought genuine one from Amazon for £26 well worth it

Fixed that for you. most peole are buying ones made for the s2, which does not work without an adapter. there is only 1 or 2 aftermarket S3 ones at the time of this posting.

Did anyone try this one? I'm over an hour from Microcenter so I'm hoping a sucker.....uh, I mean fellow XDA user will give it a go
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0381574

Most of MHL adapter say they fit for Note/S2/S3 and this is not possible if it does not include an extra piece (5 to 11 pins adapter), so I would only buy a non official MHL adapter for S3 if it clearly says that it only allows the S3 or/and it says it has 11 pins...

WHat is the cheapest MHL adapter that will work with the S III? And I mean one that works correctly. The official Samsung one is so crazy expensive. I wonder why no other companies have come out with one yet? Haven't they figured out the new port config?

Most MHL cables are 5-pin so those are out of the question. The only MHL cable that is 11-pin is the official $40 samsung one.
What you can do is get the $11 5-pin cable and hook it up to the $10 official samsung 5 to 11 pin converter. This way it will work the Galaxy S3 for only $21.

My local AT&T store carries the official Samsung S 3 mhl adapter but they are telling me that it doesn't do anything but play videos. The micro HDMI on my atrix 2 and my atrix HD would put whatever screen was on my phone on the TV without any translation. Can somebody who has the official adapter tell me if that's the case. If it is I'm not paying 40 bucks for it.

It mirrors everything onto Tv screen like every other MHL cable, and official network stores everywhere are all the same because most know F all about how the phones work so always check the net after they give you the "Facts"

He went on to say that mhl cable for the Samsung Infuse only worked for movies specifically. Is that much true or was he full of sh##? He didn't cross me as being very educated about android.

You can check videos on youtube by yourself to see how the MHL adapter mirrors your phone's screen in your HDTV. Most people selling tech-stuff know very few about what they 're actually selling, even support services provided by most companies like Samsung are quite useless since they do not know enough their products...

If you going to buy one get an original. I bought mine on amazon and it works perfectly.

Hi,
How's the video quality on your TV? Is it like the same when you connect a laptop?
What was the price for it?

Use it regularly with app filmon and the quality of really good, sometimes better than local television.
I paid £21 for mine on Amazon just before summer.

thoughts on HDMI/MHL

Engadged says the galaxy nexus has the same chip for MHL/HDMI as the galaxy s 2 and infuse 4g. Strange most people don't report it. Also being a google device I thought that everything on the phone would have its API for developers but I found nothing on android 4.0 reference about video output or multiple screen.
Older nexus were well documented in functionality or not?
I'm thinking if it could become a portable media center
https://twitter.com/#!/romainguy/status/127449572845957120
What is the XDA recommended MHL adapter? I'm assuming they are not going to add this into the box with the Nexus.
Probably samsung mhl is best bet. I think it can be had for $29 on amazon. Monoprice sells one and most reports have been good. A lot of people dont like the t action going on with the usb cinnection on it though.
I voided my warranty and your nexus.
Does MHL support analog audio output? Or is it digital audio via HDMI only?
EDIT: should've done some reading, looks like MHL supports digital audio only. But the Galaxy S apparently does have an analog audio line out sent using the same wires as the USB connector when it detects it's connected to the Samsung dock. I wonder if the Galaxy Nexus can do the same...

Yes, the one sold for the Galaxy S2 should work. If one wants a cheaper alternative they can check out this one from DealExtreme. The manufacturer claim they are using Samsung chips according to DX staff. One could throw in a USB OTG cable as well since I assume that won't be included in the box either.
I am thinking of getting the Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter from monoprice. According to the description you can charge the phone at the same time.

Because you have to connect to the power adapter. On my sgs2 however it seems to consume more energy than supplied. I have the original samsung not that.

Even if uses more energy than supplied, the loss will still be slower. As for the nexus, i am at least hoping it will break even since omap has a dedicated iva3 chip.

So how does this work exactly? Sorry I've never seen the setup before. There is just one cable right? Is it split at the end to provide to outputs? One for the TV and one for power?

The ones i've seen is a micro usb cable that goes to a small box where there is another micro usb plug(for non-mhl compatible displays, mhl compatible displays should apparently be able to work without the extra power) and a HDMI plug.
Here's an example of one: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-...2-i9100-i997-htc-g14-z710e-p510e-black-104139
I got the SGS 2 MHL adapter and it didn't work at first. I rebooted the phone and then it worked.
I was going to order an adapter from amazon last night but rethinking it im going to wait until the end of the month and get the desk dock which will have mhl support built in and has an hdmi port on the side for connecting to a tv or monitor.
Still ended up getting an HDMI lead from amazon for 49p though lol .

As far as I know places should start getting them in stock around the 30th but the only place I have seen the docks advertised is an online shop *HERE*.
Hopefully they will start hitting ebay soon as hate seeing my phone laying on the desk rather than standing proudly like my HD2 did

So best place to buy the MHL adapter?

I'm willing to bite for the full price of the Samsung MHL adapter just because I know the S3 has some problems without the official one. Anyone know of the best place to buy it? Amazon shows one but it ships from the UK and the one on Samsung's site is not compatible. Is it not out yet?
Anyone else picking it up?
I don't think it is out yet but yes, I might be getting one. It will be a whole lot easier surfing the web on my tv via the phone than using the clunky tv remote control.
I remember reading some post of a user buying one from ebay for about 9 bucks and it worked brilliantly.
i may take a chance on monoprice
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8805&seq=1&format=2
I have gotten lots of good things from them including a 75ft HDMI CL2 cable for $30 shipped and a universal GPS mount that works great for any phone for like $5 shipped....and it's never been junk really, always decent quality, very happy with them over the years for any type of audio/video/cable/adapter
only thing is no way to know if it is compatible yet until someone bites, so I may do it one day soon
Well my only thing about some of the non Samsung ones is I read they don't output 1080p if that matters to you.
I emailed monoprice support about the one you linked. Will let you guys know what they say.

I personally prefer OEM items. They usually sell for around $11.
eBay, Amazon.
I already checked with Monoprice and they said that their adapter is not compatable with the S3. The Monoprice adapter is a 5 pin adapter and Samsung changed the S3 to an 11 pin adapter. There is a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter available. Most of the mhl adapters out are 5 pin and will not work with the S3. That is what I have been told. The Samsung mhl adapter is $40. You could get the Monoprice 5 pin mhl for $11 and a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter for another $10. That would work but I would personally wait for a cheaper 11 pin mhl adapter to come out than hook up multiple adapters.
constant power needed?
I was really interested in getting one of these but it looks like you will need to have an HDMI cable AND a micro USB connected to a wall socket for the MHL adapter to work... is this true, and if so, is it worth all the cable hassle?

Yes please let us know what they tell you. I thought they flipped the pins so only the official Samsung adapter would work. If 720P works, I'd be totally fine with that...

Its a no go with those:
" Regarding our MHL adapter and the upcoming release of the Galaxy S3 in the U.S. We have tested and confirmed that the S3 uses a different pinout in regards to MHL, so our current MHL device will not work for it. We have already put in a suggestion for a device that will fully support the new S3, and we are actively working on cases and other accessories for the S3 as well. "

Any chance the MHL adapter also charges the phone? With 1%/min or game play, I can't imagine it will last very long during a game and outputting to TV...

cheap mhl - 3rd party thread

hi there ,
I want to use the MHL feature but 2 things stop me.
1) I don't want to spend that much on the original one (it's about USD $40)
2) I want to use it at the gym so I don't have a way to connect it to the wall outlet ...
I wanted to know if you know of any cheap MHL adapter that does the work? ( I prefer ebay...)
p.s
just found this one , so I'm assuming these will soon pop on ebay for a low price...

I just checked EBay and there's still no 3rd-party MHL to HDMI adapter available for the S3, almost 2 months later, so we still have only two options:
Buy the official $40 Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter
Buy an old S2 MHL adapter ($15) AND the adapter FOR the adapter ($10) == $25.
Monoprice.com has said they're coming out with their own S3 MHL cable, but that was a few weeks ago.

The cheapest you can find a non-samsung mhl to hdmi cable for the S3 is about $25 on ebay and amazon. cheaper than $40 for samsung's.

Is there any advantage to buying the official adapter? The way I see it if we go with the second option we can still use the mhl adapter on other phones that have the standard layout, but we couldn't with the official cable.
Do we lose any functionality going with the second choice?

Under my point of view if you are not going to use the MHL 5 pins cable (the old one) for S2 or Note, I would get the new one suitable only for S3 with 11 pins. I expect Samsung to solve the problem with MHL+USB OTG one day, and if it does, I think it would not be possible using the old MHL cable, but I must say this is just a possibility and NOT sure, maybe they will be selling a new MHL cable (if it happens I would cry and I will not buy any other Samsung product...)

Well, going forward, I expect the newer 11-pin cable to be the new standard, at least on samsung phones, so if you have no old phones around (or friends wanting to use it), just get the new cable.
Also, by the time I can upgrade again (~January 1st, 2014), I expect wireless display mirroring will be the more popular option anyway, so either cable may be obsolete.

I guess it will never be as cheap since its a niche product for the S3.
This might sound silly but my TV doesn't have a HDMI port (it's pretty old but still slim)
Is there any other type of converters like scart to micro usb (sounds unlikely)

Same here. After doing some research it looks like an unbranded Samsung MHL adapter for the S3. The picture isn't clear enough to get the model number for comparison, but I'm pretty sure after looking at the FCC markings and other things that don't line up with the new S2 MHL adapter. :good:
Ordered it a few mins ago
This one's $20 shipped.

Looking forward to hearing feedback from someone who gets one of these generic adapters.
I spoke with Monoprice's customer service last week and they said they plan on having their own compatible S3 MHL cable before October. I'll probably wait until then as I know theirs will work and should be fairly cheap.
Down to $22 eh? Last I checked the knock-offs were $30, and the samsung official was $40 (now $35).
I'm going to get one of these 11pin mhl-hdmi cables when they finally drop down to $10 like the S2's is, mainly because the 5-to-11 adapter I'm using on my 5pin S2 cable is TOO WIDE for my incipio silicrylic case (and most others) so I have to bend the silicone down. So, fair warning about the adapter for the adapter
Has anybody received one of these from eBay yet? If so, how well does it work?
I've seen a few too many discussions regarding plugging in subpar adapters into these phones that have caused problems. So I may be a bit paranoid but I think I'll stick with official Samsung adapters. Good price though if it works.

Note 2 mhl to hdmi fail. WTF?!

Alright so this is my fourth mhl to hdmi device that, still, won't work for me. Found out mhl adapters won't work on my note 2, so, I went on amazon and bought a mhl complete wire hook up, (no adapter just one solid connection), the kind that requires power from an outlet. Well it worked untill it started disconnecting. Then the cable just crapped out.You get what you pay for, I guess. Never got a stable connection. Bought a different one from amazon, (see picture) SKIVA brand that is supposed to work on note 2 via the special addapter that came with it.(apparently the note 2 has more pins. X) anyway this cable just doesn't work. Tried different charger addapters, nothing. Im just having alot of trouble trying to connect my phone to my samsung smart tv. Any tips would be helpful

Yea I was thinking of purchasing that one. But this skiva mhl is supposed to work on the note 2. So I must have gotten a bad one. I think most of these unofficial ones are cheaply made and the note 2 requires precision , something chinese made electronics lack

I bought like 4 or 5 different MHL adapter from Ebay for my NOTE2 to connect it to AppRadio2 and i had all kind of problems with them, finally i bought the Original Samsung one and it works without any issue. FYI it will not charge your phone while it is connect to MHL adapter.
On ebay there are a lot of fake chinese made samsung MHL adapter for like $10 don't buy it coz they are the same as the one you bought. The Amazon link in 2nd post is the original with samsung original sticker on it.

IF you want your phone to get charge while connect to MHL, you have to get a custom Kernel that supports FAST CHARGING. Because by default Note2 gets 475mA from MHL+charger but with custom kernel you can change it to 1000mA OR higher. To be safe i set my phone to 1000mA.
GOOD LUCK

Oh great, looks like I bought a fake. Had the Galaxy S3 sticker and everything. Funny that it works, though. I've tried it on Samsung HDTV's and even an old school 50 inch CRT RPTV with a DVI adapter. Works every time. Here's the kicker: It's so damn sensitive to static electricity! If someone gets up off the couch, even if the phone isn't near it, the subtle static created can actually knock the picture or sound out. It usually kicks back on in a couple seconds but sometimes I have to remove the MHL adapter and plug it back in. Weirdest thing I've ever seen! It does work, however, just not as reliably as I would like.
