Hey,
is it possible for the international one x to stream 1080p video to external displays? I've heard a few conflicting accounts, but no definite answer. Some say tegra 3 is only able to output 720p (why?), while other sources state that 1080p streaming indeed is possible - so, what's the deal?
Interestingly, here's someone claiming to stream 1080p through wifi: www*youtube*com/watch?v=BXmU8mhEV5M
I'd imagine such usage would be very heavy on the batteries, but would something similar be possible through the mhl interface?
Please advice!

Hi,
I was wondering if the Galaxy S2 is capable of playing 3D videos via the HDMI connector.
I like the feature of playing 1080p on the tv, but if i could play my 3d 1080p videos on my 3d tv it would be much better.
I found nowhere information about this, so i hope someone of you knows it or has already tested it.

it cant play 3d movies
This version specification of MHL (1.0) does not have 3D capability.
A future (next?) version will.
Therefore, no for the SGS2 for 3D MHL.
it depends on the technique used to make the video 3d.
if you have side by side 3d videos, the galaxy IS capable, because it is just a regular 1080i/p video and the tv makes it 3d, so it does not need special requirements in the device or the cable to make it possible. this would be the case for recordings of 3d tv, like anixe 3d or sky 3d (in germany). this is also the reason, why 3dtv does not need hdmi 1.4. it is just a regular 1080 picture, and the tv makes it 3d. for other techniques, codecs... this might not apply. in those cases it would not work, either because of the lack of hdmi 1.4 for a proper 3d handshake OR the lack of codecs in the device.
Ok thanks for all the helpful answers.
I have some .mkv files which are based on 3D origin. Some self recorded (avchd to mkv) and some by bluray origin.
Unfortunately i have no idea about the technique of the videos, whether if its side by side or not. I think they are not.
But anyways, i will order the connecter as soon as its availible and will report if it works or not
I have done a quick test and confirm that it does work. The .mkv was a side by side one and plays just like any normal video file. My TV can then mix the 2 together to get 3D.
The file I used was not a particularly good example, if anyone has a link to a test file they would like me try I would be more than happy to.
Since when Galaxy S 2 can record 3d with his camera ?
As far as I know it can't record 3d movies.
I recorded 3d movies with a 3d camcorder, not with my S2.
Im sure the Galaxy S3 will be capable of that.
At what bitrate would you/do you encode your movies? I'm calculating my size requirements and whether only 32GB would be enough or not. I'm thinking 720p at 900kbps/1mbps max. So far here's how I've broken down my size usage too :
Music - 0B, considering that I always stream it I don't have any music on any of my devices
Apps - 5GB, mostly those big games like Asphalt 6 and RS11 which take about 500MB each.
Camera - I'll keep another 5-7GB spare for my camera's photos and videos, I'm not sure what the bitrate of 720p/1080p footage is on Galaxy Nexus.
So now the remaining goes for movies and tv shows, considering the only TV Shows I got on my comp are DB/Z/GT and Friends which take approx. 16-20GB each in a fairly poorly encoded version, I doubt I'll be able to transfer them there. I got my iPod storing DB/Z/GT and iPad storing Friends. I guess I'll keep a few beautifully encoded videos on my SGN, for which I have about 15-17GB. I guess this should be enough.

Or. You could be less lazy and work more often to discard every file already seen. And on the photo/video, do the same thing with the ones you think you won't be showing everyday. Voila! 80% space saved. If you have problems with space, don't get the GN.
I agree an sdcard slot wouldn't have hurt and I see no reason for them not to implement it. Still, I'm getting the device. Just saying that expandability is nice to have.
You can also plug usb flash drive in via usb otg, theres a much storage as you could ever want (not as good as an sd card, and you can't tv out via mhl and use otg at the same time but it's something)

That's why you put the movie onto your phone from the flash drive directly, THEN MHL onto a TV
I think 900 to 1100 kbit/s for a 720p video is ok IF you use h.264 video codec.
However I recommend a 2-pass encoding with high quality settings in this case (my settings for handbrake: ref=3:bframes=0:subq=9:mixed-refs=0:weightb=0:8x8dct=0:weightp=0:me=tesa:trellis=0:cqm=flat:level-idc=40 which deliver good results and are well playable even on tegra2 devices).
I encoded some typical 20 to 22 minute episodes to 175mb per episodes with that and quality was good.
I'm thinking about the galaxy nexus, however I would only get it if its available at acceptable price in the 32gb version. The lack of micro sd card is a disappointment.
I can live with the lower gpu since I barely play games on it.
However since I do consume media on it i'm wondering:
Does the galaxy nexus support decoding more formats now like the galaxy SII, for instance .mkv? I fear not since it's standard google.
Since I already have a SGS2 i may rather wait for ICS on it.
average size of a good movie encoded for 720p is aprox 4 GB
so 7 movies and the phone will barely have space for apps/games
assuming you buy the 32 GB version of the phone.
and you will have no space for any music at all

But that 4GB would be for a fairly large screen, I mean the very small screen size should compensate good for bitrate. YouTube has then encoded at 700-800kbps.
the native resolution of GN is 720p
if you encode anything less than 720p you will see blurs/pixelations
just like when you watch a DVD disc on a HD 1080p screen
DVD are encoded at 480p
HD disc are 720p
Blueray disc are 1080p
I never said I will encode it less than 720p, I was talking about the bitrate. I don't need to encode it at full spec.

The quality of a picture depends on three things: resolution, screen size, and distance of the viewer to the screen.
Just saying that the screen is 720p tells you nothing.
As of my current understanding / testing when connected to a HDTV / monitor etc via MHL, currently the ONe x mirrors the screen, so you get 720p. It doesnt look all that good (I have tested on a few native 1080p Tv's, and some look better than others.
I would assume that the hardware is easily capable of outputting 1080p (rather than just mirroring the 720p screen of the phone ?)
Any Devs, or any opinions as to whether this is something that could ever be expected from HTC, or possible to add to a custom rom..
I understand that other lower spec'd HTC phones can output 1080p (even though their screen native resolution is lower.. - Sensation XL or Evo 3D - sorry not sure which one exactly..).
I have to be honest I was pretty bummed when I connected it to the TV .. I just sort of expected it would do 1080p out of the box....
Also I understand that Media link HD only currently offers 720p mirroring of the screen.. Does anyone know if this is likely to support 1080 (maybe wifi bandwith limitation ..)
the lower spec phones i.e. the evo 3d that i own will only output 1080p at 24hz making everything laggy. also it doesn`t seem to be 1080p at all but simply upscaled by the tv itself. the images are not sharp at all but look fine from a distance. if i set the phone to output a 720p it will display at 60hz and image quality will be similar if not the same. if you look at the specs you will see that the tegra 3 cannot output to 1080p howver the tegra 3 + can. maybe a good dev will be able to help you out since i intend to buy a tegra 3 device too.

Could not stand still here but if you check nvidia's site it says that HDMI: 1920x1080 so it is capable of 1080p
nvidia.com/object/tegra-3-processor.html
As I'm sure you may already know, the mhl adapter will only output 1080p video at 24hz, good for watching video, not so good for playing games. What I would like to know is this is there anyway to force the s iii to output a specific resolution through hdmi via mhl? I only have 1080p tv's in my house, I would like to use my s iii to play games on them. Is there anyway that I can make the s iii output at 720p when connected to my 1080p monitor so that I can enjoy the full refresh rate?
I just bought the MHL cable and test it with 46" LCD full HD 1080p and realize that Note 2 only can output 1080p/30Hz only. The picture quality is so bad when compare seeing on the phone and lagging happen alot when playing game. So is this the best resolution when output to TV or because the bad quality of my cable

it depends on the game. at 1080p, you need a lot of video ram and a lot of processing power from the GPU to be able to handle games at that resolution smoothly. if you look at benchmarks, the note 2 only averages 15fps in some benchmarks at that resolution, so lag is expected. at 1080p it needs to render 2.25 times as many pixels compared to 720p.
so far the only mobile SoCs that i've seen that can handle 1080p with a reasonably playable framerate are the qualcomm s4 pro and the exynos 5250.
