Tethering - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi are there any roms out that offer free hotspot because with the new unlimited data plan coming out I will lose my hotspot feature and hope there is a Rom that will allow me to keep it

I use this app to pretty good effect. I don't know about roms with it baked in; the CM iterations usually have them, but I don't know about others.

I just got an S III and hotspot will be a return and/or sell the phone issues. I installed this app, and it works so far. I read in a different thread that one user got messages from TMo and that it was subsequently blocked.
Have you used it enough to run into this? i don;t need it a lot, but would like to find a solution that has proven out to users.

as far as I know they are not allowed to cut you off due to wireless tethering anymore. I use the same app, though not very often, and I have had no problems

Thanks - good to know. Too bad the easy APN fix that works on HTC devices doesn't here.

Just get an app? There's a lot out there that work after rooted.

I am with Sprint and just wanted to see if I root my device will I still be able to use the hotspot feature?
Thanks,
Adam
Based on your question, I suspect that you are paying for the official Sprint hotspot service. After rooting, you can use the tethering capability built into 2.2 WITHOUT having to pay Sprint $30 per month for the privilege. If you choose to run a 2.1 ROM, you can use Google's Wireless Tether app and accomplish the same thing, again without paying Sprint a single penny.
For the Sprint Hotspot functionality, you will need to be sure to find a ROM that has that apk installed. Quite a few of the custom ROMs remove this because it is obsolete in comparison to the wifi tether application from google.

I'm sure we`'ll see it added soon enough. Cyanogen added it to a lot of cm7 supported devices. It's only a matter of time. I'm stuck on modded stock roms until it is. XP

except that you are mistaken. My old phone was an LG G2X and both CM7 and CM9 have WiFi Calling working on that phone's releases.
What exactly is needed to get it working? Can you just copy the APK and associated files from a stock rom and paste them into a CM9 or is there some underlying system-level programming that has to be done as well?
It is not in the cm9 d2tmo 7/27 nightly.
Cm9 least brings back the 2g/3g toggle so battery life is better than stock without wifi calling in 2g only mode.
Fyi the nightlies are stable... only issues for me are with camera

I haven't bothered to look through the sgs3 source, but on my old t-959 vibrant, wifi calling also required support compiled into the kernel (KINETEO_GAN or something like that) so it's likely that we'll need the source and means to do the same for the sgs3 before wifi calling is even a possibility on cm10.
And hey, maybe that support is already in the source, like I said, I haven't bothered to download it and check.
Cheers
Tytung has GB and ICS versions
Since Tytung has made GB and ICS versions that work on AOSP / CM9, maybe he could help us?
Here is his thread with versions of WiFi Calling that I know work on HTC HD2, but I think they work on all T-Mo GB/ICS devices.

WiFi calling can be set up on any ROM. Not T-Mobile WiFi calling, but free WiFi calling nonetheless. There are plenty if tutorials floating around.
And it will never be built into official CM source.

I just reflashed my old Desire Z with the official CM7.2 downloaded from RomManager, and it came with the TMo WiFi calling built in. I'm very interested in this. My office is a cellular black hole. I need to be able to make WiFi calls with my TMo number. I don't care about the other free WiFi calling apps. I hope CM will eventually support this, or someone comes out with a patch.
BTW, the CM team is amazing. I'm not complaining about them.

[Q] Native SPRINT HOTSPOT

I know we have made big strides in finally being able to tether now on jellybean now which is awesome, thanks to TREVE. So what I wanted to know is would we finally be able to get the sprint native hotspot to work now as a hack. Would it be possible for anyone to work on this. I know questions may came up as why I would want that. My answer to do that is I believe its more stable, also it doesn't cause my phone to battery to go hot and I do not have to reboot my device when I would like to use regular wifi for things such like wifi-direct etc. After using wifi tether if I would like to connect to my home router I would have to reboot phone. Another thing is that there are apps that require that you use sprint hotspot such as KIES AIR which I use from time t time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ig=f anyone wants to know Im stock rooted LG7 odexed.

No. This does seem like the way to go, and I'm sure it will come about eventually. We went through this on the Epic4G as well, and someone did find a way to make it work, though it took a long time.

Yeah I was looking for this today when my home DSL dropped, as I had it previously on the Epic 4g and Epic Touch.
rujelus22 had a great thread that explained how he enabled the hack for the Epic touch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Also, there is a JB leak for the Epic touch which did hotspot tether by default (it didn't check for the plan) so maybe we could even just take that APK and put it on the S3...
Would any developers be able to follow what he did?

I've decompiled framework and am looking for the statements to change but no luck yet. Anyone out there willing to assist me in finding what needs to change?
Attachments:

Bump, I've been looking at these files along with someone in the ET4G forum and we've been at a standstill for a while. It would be really nice to get some extra eyes on this problem. Not only would a hacked hot spot give a way to infrastructure tether, but would most likely open up native usb and bluetooth tethering (touchwiz) as well. And the edits would likely be very similar on the vzw S3. In other words kill a bunch of birds with one stone.
I know the treve hot spot works and is an awesome solution for most use cases, but there are other things we could do with a proper hacked hot spot as provided on the Epic and ET4G (prior to JB)

WiFi Tether for Sprint Galaxy Nexus?

Is there a working WiFi Tether option for the Sprint GeNex running JB 4.1.1 , OTHER than paying $30 per month to Sprint to unlock WiFi Hotspot? I have looked around and cannot find a solid solution or answer with regard to this.
WiFi Tether does not work in any iteration I have found, including the TrevE Mod (for Galaxy SIII). Open Garden doesn't work and FoxFi doesn't work rooted or un-rooted.
I have heard of ROMs that include functioning WiFi hotspots, but do they work with Sprint? I really don't want to ROM because I am happy with stock JB, and, frankly, my Nexus running stock JB, rooted, with Juice defender, gets amazing battery life that I was NOT getting from AOKP with Franco Kernel. But, if I need to go custom to get WiFi Tether, I will.
Thanks!

I have it. It doesn't work. Ad-hoc and all other mentioned functions do not work. Either Sprint has found a way to block all third party tethering apps, or no one has written a tethering program that works with Sprint. I have tried every variation I could find, including the one tailored to the Sprint Galaxy SIII because it has Samsung specific drivers. No luck. Unless someone has something I haven't tried before, or has the "Work around for Sprint Wifi tether blocking" app, I will have to live with out, or pay $30 a month to Sprint.

I'm glad. Thanks again. I wish I knew why it would let the ad-hoc connection and other functions didn't work before, but it's working now, so I'm happy.
Hope you had a good holiday!
I'm running the latest Paranoid Android 2.99, but have seen some issues with sprint wifi tether recently. Right now, it seems it only works on 4G. 3G data is immediately killed when I turn on wifi tether. I have the GA02 radios.
Found a solution.
I recently picked up a Sprint GNEX and put it at the latest stock 4.2.1 and rooted so I could tether (even though I have awful 3G and little-to-no LTE in my area). Spent a lot of time looking for a fix as the app wasn't working right for me, to tether, and couldn't find a way to get it working. Web searching the errors I was getting I tracked down this thread. There is a custom version there that works on our phones, with the right settings, start at post #109.
Sorry I'm sure this has already been discussed / linked / hosted on XDA, etc, but I couldn't find it in my search until I went outside XDA, so posting again here in case someone like me is looking in this thread. The app from Google Play does not work, this custom version is the only one that did the trick for me running stock 4.2.1.

T-mobile Spying on me?

I recently been getting texts that appear to be from t-mobile saying that I have used 400 of the 500 mb hotspot on my data plan. The problem is I have done zero tethering what so ever. I first started seeing this text after using the android app XBMC on my phone to stream a few movies. It seems as if the phone is seeing this app as another device using the connection but its all on the same device. I am just trying to see if anyone else has experience this. I notice I do not get the texts if I use the vpn the whole time. Any thoughts as to what is going on?
I don't understand the question.
Use the vpn to hide traffic
Tmobile is probably seeing the desktop user agent and is thinking that you are tethering.

I've had 2 similar problems. A week after I got the phone it started using all data as hotspot data. A factory reset fixed it.
A couple of weeks ago my Loader Droid app on my phone started using hotspot data. I cleared data and cache on the app and that fixed that problem.
factory reset will fix it, better hurry, the tmo mobile police will be at your door, as soon as you hit 1gig data. Always when you lay the phone down, make sure it is camera down. And place napkin over it, so they can't see who you are.
be prepared.
