I am with Sprint and just wanted to see if I root my device will I still be able to use the hotspot feature?
Thanks,
Adam
Based on your question, I suspect that you are paying for the official Sprint hotspot service. After rooting, you can use the tethering capability built into 2.2 WITHOUT having to pay Sprint $30 per month for the privilege. If you choose to run a 2.1 ROM, you can use Google's Wireless Tether app and accomplish the same thing, again without paying Sprint a single penny.
For the Sprint Hotspot functionality, you will need to be sure to find a ROM that has that apk installed. Quite a few of the custom ROMs remove this because it is obsolete in comparison to the wifi tether application from google.

I thought he meant you could use sprint's wifi hotspot app if you have a rooted 2.2 rom. I already use the wifi tether app.

Do Foxfi and Wifi Tether apps support JB yet? I have had no sucess getting them to work yet, so I was hoping that was the case rather than a problem with my phone.
Thanks for your help.
I'm curious, why do you even need an app to do tethering? It's built right into the OS.

Figured it out. Please excuse noobness.
He needs an app like "tether for root users" because the in OS tether charges money for tethering whereas root apps that allow WiFi tether don't incur any charges.

Wow, i'm sorry. (smh @ myself) I just switched to M'ICS and Foxfi doesn't work for me either. it worked for my on GB. I have the Sprint HotSpot and that works. I know you don't have it but have you searched in the devolopment section? I believe there was a thread on 3g/4g hotspot hack. I've never used wifi teather. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Edit: the hotspot hack is only for FF18 stock.

Foxfi or wireless tether from google. I am not sure what your settings may be but I ran both of them flawlessly. Do not use a password and see what happens

I think this is the 5th time I've posted this in a week. On ics use wifi tether for root users from market. Set your device in the app to galaxy nexus cdma to make it work.
worked for me!

Yes. I just upgraded to FF18. Foxfi did not work but wifi tether did. Although it did not work set to galaxy nexus but does work when set to auto.
Go figure? Thanks for the tip!
So I thought I would report that I got Wifi Tether for Root Users to work on AOKP M6 by setting the device profile to galaxy nexus.
Also, I've found that using the EL29 modem gives the fastest speeds. I was testing 250-300 kbps down with FF18, I get 1200+ kbps on EL29.
You know there's a profile for our device...

Hi are there any roms out that offer free hotspot because with the new unlimited data plan coming out I will lose my hotspot feature and hope there is a Rom that will allow me to keep it

I use this app to pretty good effect. I don't know about roms with it baked in; the CM iterations usually have them, but I don't know about others.

I just got an S III and hotspot will be a return and/or sell the phone issues. I installed this app, and it works so far. I read in a different thread that one user got messages from TMo and that it was subsequently blocked.
Have you used it enough to run into this? i don;t need it a lot, but would like to find a solution that has proven out to users.
as far as I know they are not allowed to cut you off due to wireless tethering anymore. I use the same app, though not very often, and I have had no problems

Thanks - good to know. Too bad the easy APN fix that works on HTC devices doesn't here.
Just get an app? There's a lot out there that work after rooted.
Hi
What is the fastest way to enable free wireless tethering on a stock sprint HTC evo 4g.
It is my father inlaws phone, I don't want to do anything major like install a custom rom if possible.
Thanks so much for the responses.
Just search "no root Wi-Fi tether" on the market. Try the first one that pops up called one click tether or something like that.

You are going to have unlock it and then you can leave the stock rom on it but you need to look for a hack wifi hotspots zip file and then he can keep the stock rom and have hotspots for free

If for some reason rooting is not an option for you and finding a wireless wifi is not working because you're not rooted... Then resort to plan B and go USB tether with PDAnet
With the new wifi tether beta version, what settings do you use to make it work properly? I am getting an error?

I was wondering if there was a around the fact that virgin mobile blocks Wi-Fi hotspots on their phones unless you pay the $15 fee. I'm rooted, so I was wondering if there's a way I could use that to my advantage

I just recently bought the HTC One V and after doing quite a bit of research (there's not much on the Internet about it), I was able to successfully use my rooted Virgin One V as a mobile hotspot.
You'll need to use the Wifi-tether app. I'm using the 3.2 Beta version. I can't post the link because I'm a new user, but you can find it on Google.
Make sure you change your settings to Generic ICS 0. Afterwards, you should be able to successfully tether to other devices without having to pay that extra $15.

Hi, lil bit an offtopic question here. what about reverse tether? Do we have an app for that. I used internet pass through when I use sense rom, but right now i'm using non sense-based rom.
Haters gonna hate. Potatoes gonna potate. Waiters gonna wait. Aligators gonna aligate.
