I rooted my SGH-T999 to do the clockwork mod and save some battery while in standby. Now that there's an update, I'd like to install it, but it seems that I can't do so while rooted.
I've read the Unroot guide, but it only mentions unrooting phones that have a custom ROM installed. I only rooted using CWM.
Is there a simple way to unroot my phone without wiping the data? Does wiping data also wipe contacts?
Thanks.

Why don't you just flash this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838101 that's the update, and don't you have your contacts sync with your Google account? If so you won't lose em.

Good question,
Same thing here stock ROM, rooted recovery, can we switch back to stock recovery for update.
JB will be coming to International version of S3 next week and we should have it I would think in ~2 weeks or so. Would rather not wipe with a new ROM.
There has got to be a way to go back to original recovery...

Ok now that there is a root method for 2.2 I was wondering. When you back up your ROM using Clockwork is it just a simple press of a button to return it to the aforementioned backup. Also how would I return my phone to factory condition (remove clockwork, reinstall stock ROM.) And one last question, how does the phone remember my programed activation info. Or do I need to reactivate it. Thanks in advance.

1.) Yea, backing up is one press and just wait for backing up and restoring.
2.) I believe there is an unrooted stock Rom you can just flash to restore it all.
3.) It's like Apple jacks... it just does
All spelling errors thanks to xt9 on my Evo!
Thanks, if i reflash that stock android for evo does that overwrite the clockwork recovery and set the phone back to s-on

No it shouldn't and there are stock froyo 2.2 roms on here that has root. Just don't except ota over the air updates from sprint and you should be fine..
Edit. You have to wipe data and delvik and does a factory reset before you install the new rom. The delvik I'm recover is under advance options or something like that. Can't recall and sorry for that..

The wife did an Ota upgrade to Gingerbread battery sucked, so I did a factory reset. It was working OK for a couple of weeks until yesterday. It freezes about 20 times a day. It's stock and it just started happening yesterday.
I'm thinking of just rooting it and flashing cleanGB.
Any chance this is a hardware problem and would be dangerous to flash at this point?

Try to pin point exactly what you was doing when this first happened. Such as what apps you've installed. Got this tip from a fellow XDA member. Might help! If it is an app causing this issue, then just un-install it.
Question...was your wife's Epic stock before you did the OTA?
I don't think it's a hardware issue. You should be ok if you reset the phone bringing it back to a good working state then root, flash ACS recovery or clock work, flash a clean GB Rom ei22 based, or a rom of your choice.
Also, try rooting and installing cwm. Do a full backup, then wipe the cache 3x. If this doesn't make stable, do a full titanium backup and flash cleangb. You can then restore missing apps and data. Careful not to do a full restore, cause you will get the bloat that is removed like ciq.

To determine if it is hardware or software you can try either flashing a custom ROM and see if that helps or Odin back to EC05 and let it OTA again in case something didn't go right with the update.
Hi Guys, thanks for the relies.
Yes the phone was and still is completely stock.
My intention was to root and put cleanGB, but I didn't have enough time last night because I ran into problems with the usb not being recognized w/ my laptop.
I ended up trying to root the phone with QBking77 Youtube tutuorial for the EI22 based phones, but ran into a problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE&feature=relmfu
It verified the file kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 put failed to flash it. I ran out of time and didn't get a chance to use another cable.
I ended up just a stock factory wipe. It's not freezing anymore.
Okay so my sister updated her epic a few days ago, and has been having nonstop problems with the ICS build FF18 there are just so many bugs in this and wondering if there is anything she can do without wiping her data on the phone.
She has two options. After ROOTING and flashing a custom recovery, she can either:
1. Backup all the data she wants: apps, sms, system settings, home screen layout and call log.She can use ROM Toolbox, My Backup Root or Titanium Backup. Those are the best. I personally recommend ROM Toolbox, but My Backup Root can backup sms and call logs.
After that she can flash any ROM she wants and then restore the data of all the apps.
2. She can try to format system only and then flash any ROM she wants. This is the easiest way but it is very risky to do it.
The first method is the most recommended. It is always recommended to flash a clean install.
Hope this helps. You can find all the links you want for Rooting and Flashing in the Android Development section.

About the only option you would have then is using Kies to backup, wipe the phone with a factory reset and restore through Kies.
If you have been reading through the threads, then you should know that the brick bug is still a major concern with the latest ota.
But you really don't have any other option if you're not going to root.

I don't blame her. It's no longer a great or even good phone for the majority of people. Even with custom roms and customizations I get about half the performance. They should have never released this update to the masses.

it's the first Ics update of course there gonna be bugs that's a must for any update all the kinks haven't been worked out yet and if she hates the phone so much now then why not save yourself another 200 and root downgrade unroot it and stop being stubborn and difficult it's not going to kill her

It is the apps that are on there. She has to start from a clean slate. Get Go BackUp, backup just contacts, sms, mms, and call log. Factory Reset. Then reinstall the the apps she wants from the Play Store. This worked for me.
you need update the device to stock FH13.. maybe fixed your issue about battery drain...
Running FH13 with 2 hours on screen time and 60% battery left. I started at about 90% after flashing the update patch from FF18 to FH13.

I saw huge battery improvements flashing fh13. that is if you flashed the kernel and everything.

I dont understand what the issue is..
Solution seems clear...
Download EL26 one-click,
Apply EL26 one-click,
Disable OTA,
Unroot.
Never ever have ICS again,
Done.
OK, long story short, I rooted last night, put on a custom ROM, decided to go back to stock, so I restored from my backup in rom manager, it went back to my stock rom and then I deleted the ROM in my SD, and then went into SuperSU, and hit settings. From there, I hit "Full unroot" and It removed SuperSU, and then I deleted the super.zip from my SD. Am I completely on stock and root free? Or is there some hidden files in the background tampering with my system? I'm a noob at this. First time rooting!
AND if I wipe date/factory reset, and go back into ROM manager, will I be able to restore from my backup?
Your doing this the hard way. Just dl and flash the stock ROM, found in the Android Development stickies. One Odin flash, and your stock. But don't forget to run triangle away before flashing stock (if returning for warranty).

When I flash the stock rom, Will all my data be saved? like my app layouts and data? Or would I have to install them one by one or use titanium backup?

The Odin version will wipe the internal SD so the phone would be the same as when it was new. Unfortunately it you use TiBu you will need to root to restore the backups.

Thats my concern. You see, I was on a rom, and I made a nandroid backup in rom manager. While on the rom, I wanted to go to stock, so I went to rom manager, restored my nandroid backup, and I was back on my stock rom with everything in place. I deleted my other rom, went into SuperSU, and clicked the "FULL UNROOT" button. It deleted SuperSU, and the root directories. Am I good to go?
I even ran root checker, and It says I am NOT rooted. I'm just wondering if you think there are extra files in the background? I dont know.. I wipe the cache and everything, even the partition cache, and deleted any excess rootfiles from my SD.
You're making this harder than it needs to be (as mrhaley already said above). Just Odin the stock (non root-injected) samsung ROM and you'll be unrooted. Then do a factory reset from settings and format the extSD card too if you want to wipe everything else (for resale).

No - you need root for TitianiumBackup. The only appdata that can be restored once you've gone back to unrooted stock is stuff that GoogleBackup can restore from the cloud, if the app supports it.
But why unroot if you're not going to sell it or return it? No point.
I apologize if this is covered elsewhere, I did not come across the question or answer in my search.
I have a Rogers Note II (GT-N7105/SGH-I317M).
It is running stock touch whiz 4.1.2. I had been running custom roms, but after their various issues, I am going with stock samsung at the moment.
I have TWRP installed as the custom recovery, and I used it to restore my backup I took right after rooting.
Not having any issues, but I am simply wanting to know if I can go into Settings >> Backup and Reset and the perform a factory reset of the phone to erase all apps and data.
I am not trying to unroot the phone or anything like that. This phone is a work phone and I am going to be turning it in for the Note 3 next week. I would like to erase my content before doing so, again, not trying to unroot it (I have the tools such as Triangle away, stock firmware and Odin) just want to do a wipe and reset it for the next person who may use it.
So again, the question. If I factory reset via settings will there be any issues or will it simply go back to a rooted blank rom with no apps data?
Or will I end up with a mess?
Thanks for the help!
Factory reset will only wipe your personal data that you entered nothing will affect system or any modifications on it you will see no mess just a clean phone

So I essentially will have a rooted phone with a romantic that is set back to stock? Which is exactly what I am trying to achieve.
The fact that I have twrp installed makes no difference?
Exactly it will not affect system you will have clean stock rooted with twrp installed

I did this many times before with rooted and romed htc devices running things like cm and insert coin + sense but I wasnt sure how pick an already picky Samsung rom would be when rooted.
