I apologize if this is covered elsewhere, I did not come across the question or answer in my search.
I have a Rogers Note II (GT-N7105/SGH-I317M).
It is running stock touch whiz 4.1.2. I had been running custom roms, but after their various issues, I am going with stock samsung at the moment.
I have TWRP installed as the custom recovery, and I used it to restore my backup I took right after rooting.
Not having any issues, but I am simply wanting to know if I can go into Settings >> Backup and Reset and the perform a factory reset of the phone to erase all apps and data.
I am not trying to unroot the phone or anything like that. This phone is a work phone and I am going to be turning it in for the Note 3 next week. I would like to erase my content before doing so, again, not trying to unroot it (I have the tools such as Triangle away, stock firmware and Odin) just want to do a wipe and reset it for the next person who may use it.
So again, the question. If I factory reset via settings will there be any issues or will it simply go back to a rooted blank rom with no apps data?
Or will I end up with a mess?
Thanks for the help!
Factory reset will only wipe your personal data that you entered nothing will affect system or any modifications on it you will see no mess just a clean phone

So I essentially will have a rooted phone with a romantic that is set back to stock? Which is exactly what I am trying to achieve.
The fact that I have twrp installed makes no difference?
Exactly it will not affect system you will have clean stock rooted with twrp installed

I did this many times before with rooted and romed htc devices running things like cm and insert coin + sense but I wasnt sure how pick an already picky Samsung rom would be when rooted.

I was running AOKP Jellybean and rebooted my phone which updated the OTA Jellybean update I was unaware of (not like Verizon ever gets things done) and now it bootloops. I can access recovery, ODIN, and have tried my back ups which none of them can load /data, and have tried to simply reflash the rom, which bootloops with the roms boot animation, and have tried wiping data/cache/dalvik/battery stats and nothing worked. Is there anyway to wipe it completely and start from there, or at least get a backup working/computer-saved backup on there? It appears I can't access the phone from my computer because I last used fast charge and now the computer doesn't know it's plugged in. Am I screwed?
try to format system in cwm...and reflash your rom
good luck

I second the factory reset.
Do you have access to Fastboot? If so, why not push commands to the phone and factory reset it and start fresh?
Sorry for the late reply, it still was bootlooping after a factory reset, I just got a replacement GNex. Thanks to those who replied though.
Hello,
My friend has a galaxy s2 and recently his son somehow managed to get a virus on it. I have a lot of experience with rooting, flashing, and all that fun stuff. Especially with the t mobile galaxy s2 since I have one as well. He asked me If I can restore his phone back to a new rom since it was acting weird. For example, if he saves a new contact or installs or uninstalls an app, if he reboots all those changes are gone. It is as if the phone keeps rebooting to a certain time. I am guessing a virus is causing this.
So the first I thought of was to download a rom (Jedi Knight 6) and did the typical wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache/dalvik, then flashed the rom with success. When I rebooted the phone, it was still the same, as if I did nothing in the recovery. I thought it may have been because I was CWM, so I installed goo manager and flashed the TWRP recovery through there. It gave me success but when I boot to recovery, it is still CWM. At this point I decided to use ODIN to restore it to the original stock rom. I followed the instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858435. First time I got a fail on ODIN, removed the battery and tried again and it gave me pass and the phone rebooted. When it did guess what? It was as if I did nothing.
I ran out of ideas. I did everything I can think of. I used the custom recovery to try to wipe everything and flash a new fresh rom but that failed. I even tried ODIN to restore it to stock but that failed as well. Is there anything else I can try? I did a lot of research but couldn't find anything, maybe someone can give me some tips?? Thank You in Advance!!
Can someone please help me?
This sounds very strange. You said even after you Odin back to stock it reverted back to what he had before you reinstall the stock ROM ? Was the phone rooted before you tried to help him?
Did you try an aosp ROM?

Yea I know its strange, and its not like I have no experience with these things. I was very suprised when that happened. Yes it was and is still rooted, Im sure because super su is on it. He is currently running JediMindTrick (ROM by ptmr3). I still dont know what to do. I will try an aosp rom, but if odin didnt do it I doubt another rom would lol.

Try wiping cache and dalvik. Then format system, data, cache using cwm. Factory reset then flash new rom using cwm or odin.

Hey guys I was running a nightly of CM 10.1 and enabled full disk encryption with a pin. I decided to rebuild my phone so I flashed a new ROM through CWM however when it booted it was asking for the encryption password. The pin that I used previously won't work. I've tried re-flashing, factory reset (CWM), and ODINing the phone back to stock. None of which removes the encryption. Wtf do I do?
Only way I know of -- factory reset after booting up

I can't factory reset from the ROM now because it won't accept my PIN.

From everything I've read and seen, once a device is encrypted the only way out is to ODIN back to the stock ROM.

Just boot into recovery like twrp and wipe data, the button in the bottom left of the screen in the wipe menu
sent from the scary door.....

Nope. I did it when on stock. A simple factory reset set it right.

Yes however as he stated already he factory reset in CWM and it did nothing. On top of that since he flashed a new ROM the device no longer accepts his PIN once booted so factory reset from within the settings menu is a no go. Thus ODINing back to stock is the only way.

This is really weird guys.. I ODIN'd the SECOND time to 4.0.4 and it fixed it. When I odin'd stock 4.1.1 it was still encrypted.....
Old thread but I restored stock recovery and that cleared encryption. Could not clear encryption with clockwork, philz, or TWRP.
Im new all this rooting and rom stuff and yesterday morning i successfully rooted and inststalled the jellybomb 14.0.0 jelly bean rom thanks to qbking77's on point videos. so the question is... how can i switch which rom im running? i like the jellybeen roms and im looking to explore more to see which better suits my needs. ive heard of doing clean/dirtry instals or something of the sort but i want the best and safest way possible so i dont run into any bricking trouble. please help?
Ok, read up on how to flash a recovery
Download the rom of your choice and place it.on your sdcard. Once you do that you can install roms by booting into recovery and finding the zip for the rom you want to flash and selecting it through the "install zip from sdcard" option
Now a clean install is whenyou wipe all partitions, aka blocks of your phones memory, (details farther down) and then install the rom zip. This method minimizes the chances for problems to occur after installing
A clean flash involves:
Formatting system
Formatting / Clearing data (also known as a factory reset)
Wiping cache
Wiping / Clearing dalvik cache
Now a dirty flash is when you just flash the new rom zip over whatever you're currently rumning, without clearing anything. This method is only recommended when flashing an updated version of the same rom, and even then, the nature of some updates can require you to do a clean flash.
One more thing, DO NOT flash any roms, mods, or zips for the international version. That usa surefire way to brick your debice because the partitions are completely different.
To learn more about how android and this.stuff works, I would suggest heading over to xda,university.com
Thanks for the info. What is the best way to back everything up? I backed everything up wen I installed th jb. Rom and went to restore and couldnt find anythingband had to start from scratch.

Backup via CWM (RECOVERY) is mainly for restoring the same rom or going back to the rom you were running if experimenting, Now, can use apps such as Titanium backup to save all the other settings, apps and things. Once you flash your new rom, download it, open program and can restore your stuff that way. Personally, I'll wipe, start from scratch, sometimes i'll download an app i never use, and it just allows me to clear out the useless ones.. Happy flashing!

Yes as said above, a backup through recovery (also called a "nandroid" ) stores an EXACT image of the current state of your device. Meaning all data, all system files, all apps, radios, etc. Backing up through an app, like Titanium Backup, only backs up certain things like apps and app data
Basically, if you're trying any experimental stuff that may break your system (for example, flashing a new modem or testing to see if a certain kernel works), then a nandroid is the way to go because you can restore to an exact image of a state when everything was working
Yea I did that the 1st time and couldnt recover anything. Is there a certain way I should recover or maybe I did something wrong? Im not sure. Sorry if im sounding stupid but I cant return my phone if I screw it up so im tryin to be as safe as possible. Hopefully thats understandable

Press volume up home button and then power button don't let go till Samsung screen comes up bought 10 ish sec. Once let go phone should go into cwm, clock work mod recovery. See if you have that first

No no, its recovery
The recovery is basically something that allows you to install zips, it doesnt actually have much to do with recovering anything lol
But first do what was suggested right above me to check to see if you have a recovery installed
To get a more detailed description of what a recovery is and what it does, you can get over to xda-university and read through the "as user" section on recoveries
Think cwm has saved a few phones on here. Me I don't use a pc. Easy just with phone. If he's deleted his folder should he recoveR then it would bring that folder bk?

Well yea I kno I have a recovery I use cwm... I jus need to kno how I can actually save my phones content... I dont wanna start fresh everytime I decide to flash a new rom

OK titanium bkup. But don't restore all things if your backing up at lot as will save 4.1.2 4.2.1 and 4.2 2 and so on. Don't want to mix as fc will happen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I previously installed the 4.2.2 camera before the OTA was available and this prevented me from successfully using the OTA because the phone wasn't completely stock. After trying all of the "typical" fixes like going back to the stock camera and a bunch of other stuff (covered in my last thread), I was told the only option I had was a factory reset. I finally had a free day so I did a Titanium backup as well as a nandroid backup with TWRP, saved all of my pictures and such along with the backup files on a backup HD, then did a factory reset through the android settings menu. Once it rebooted, it was "reset" but the 4.2. camera remained. I tried the OTA update and of course it failed. So I rebooted into TWRP, wiped the caches and then did a factory reset within TWRP and once it rebooted, I had the same issue (it was reset but the 4.2 camera remained). All of my pictures and the Ti backup files remained on the phone throughout this whole process as well, not sure if that's normal or not.
What am I doing wrong? It seems like it's resetting all the phone data but keeping my old modified rom? Thanks.
That's exactly what factory reset does
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
OK, I'm not sure why I was previously told on here that was my only "fix" then if it doesn't modify what I am having issues with. So what is it I need to do in order to get a factory ROM with the factory camera that will accept the OTA? I thought there was a "factory" way that would do it quickly/easily without going through dozens of steps?
Use the return to stock thread in the general section.

For the record, I did see the link in his sig and read through his "back to stock" tutorial before asking if there was a way that didn't require dozens of steps. I don't have much free time so I was trying to see if there were any "easy" ways.
Regardless, I got it completely reset stock 4.1.1 and rooted again. Thanks for the help there.
Is it better to use my Ti Backup to restore things BEFORE installing the 4.2.2 OTA or should I do the OTA and then restore with Titanium? Thanks.
