I updated my stock-rooted ec05 to eh17 recently just to try out gingerbread, but it kept rebooting on me, so I tried last night to go back to ec05. I had downloaded the latest odin, I already had drivers installed, I even had another ec05 zip file with cwm 3.1.0.1 built in, and I had dg27.tar as an old standby. After many, many, many, many, many attempts, I finally managed to get the right combination of pit, tar, cable and usb port to get the old dg27 installed. It seemed to work ok, but seemed a bit slow. I did an upgrade to the latest ec05 using the built-in update tools. It was a 99mb download/update and it went fine. Then I re-rooted it with cwm 3.02.5 and updated to 3.1.0.1, but the actual phone part is just crap. It boots up ok, but then just FREEZES. It doesn't matter if I have the sd card installed or not, I can barely launch programs, I couldn't even make a phone call...the PHONE app fc'd on me... wtf??? the PHONE app fc'd on me... I can't even use my smartPHONE as a PHONE!!!! And I'm getting completely fed up with how slow it is and how it fc's 98% of the time and takes 10x's longer to do anything even when it does work. Thing is, my internet connection is only 512kb/s downstream...yes, that's only 512KB/s...so I can't just go around downloading .tar files everywhere trying each one until i find one that works. Plus, I knew the official gingerbread release is just around the corner, so I wanted to be back to stock for it. But I can't get this damn thing working to save my life and it's pissing me off to no end...I've wiped the cache and davlik cache so many times, it's not even funny. I don't want to just do a factory reset, because I have 18,000 txt msgs that takes an hour to restore and I have visual voicemail that I use and have tons of those saved and that requires using root access to copy the folder where the data and audio files are stored in the root in order to back it up.... so it's a pain each time I want to start over...
Anyone have any bright ideas? please???
~Mark/Zeoran
I can't think of anything to do but reload. I would back up my sdcard. Wipe everything 3x. Reformat the sdcard. Install Deca's Deodexed EH17 twice in a row without rebooting and see if that works for you. I have been using it with no problems. If you are set on EC05 than Odin EC05 instead. I would not go to DG27 and then up to EC05. Just go straight to EC05.
@crawrj, I'm serious man, GB is shifting the partions around some how, and not getting fixed when going back to froyo.
A lot of EH17 data is not compatible with EC05 that is why you are having so many FCs. A factory data reset is your best bet to get your stability back. Restore only data that you absolutely have to have. I had a buzzing in EG22 today from a EH17 downgrade that I couldn't find so did a reset myself today. But my phone is superfast and smooth again with no errors, so totally worth it. Restore your texts when you go to bed and will be done when you wake.

Not sure what that could be. I went from EF02 back to EC05 without any problems. I went back to Gingerbread on EG22 and have been here since.

Its random when it errors out but when it does, it can be bad to the point of having to Odin. Sometimes flashing a Froyo ROM fresh fixes it but sometimes it doesn't. I can't explain why it doesn't happen every time but I have been flashing 2 to 3 ROMs a day the past week and about 25% of the time, if I don't Odin, it can't be resolved

Yup, something was changed in that EH17. I have to redo my email accounts rather than restore the accounts and data.
I been going back and forth between GB and Froya. everytime i go up and down i use odin. if you want to make sure that your phone goes back to the manufactory settings then you need to have (Phone EFS Clear) checked. that will bring back everything to the first day you bought your phone then you can start again with whatever you want.
as far as backup up the files, first root your phone and go to 4shared.com and download (my backup pro .apk) this will allow you to backup and restore everything you have at one shot.
i hope any of that help
If you wipe everything 3x, reflash a ROM and reboot, it will usually (but not always) eliminate the problem. Then wipe everything 3x and restore a nandroid. You should be good. If it doesn't work after a clean ROM install then Odin is necessary

I ran into a similar issue, went from EH06 back to my daily driver EC05 that I had a nandroid of. wound up having to wipe everything, do the full EC05 rom install, kernel flash, and then run the restore to get it to boot. Not sure what the deal there was, but still got it working.
I recently jumped back to EC05, I just wiped 3x, flashed my ROM and then restored my APKs (never the data) brought back my call log, sms, mms, alarms and dictionary and have had no issues.
I tried, Bamboozle (EF02), Go Green (EG22), Osprey (EG22), Hawk v1 and 2 (EG22) and Vendetta (EH17)
I got tired of the rebooting in the leaks, I like being back to like 3-4 days on my ext battery with midNight 5.3
10/10 sat in GPS with 2.6m acc (using EH17 modem too)
Is Midnight EXT 4 based? I'm still on Stock EC05 RFS, but wondering if flashing the EH17 modem would be better...not all that impressed with the EC05 modem.

For me the EH17 modem has been the best I have used... but as with everything YMMV!!
I do agree that the EH17 modem is good, but the GB ROM that comes with it is broken. I got a lot of FC all over the place out of nowhere with the ROM. Since then, I've changed the ROM but kept the Modem and things are running much smoother.
GB leaks have many issues still and I think its still wrong to make them the everyday driver, in addition to that, we are not getting much benefit on having GB right now, many apps that were GB only are running perfectly fine on Froyo... My suggestion is, test the leaks if your feeling adventurous but expect issues.

Im not able to post in the dev side yet, still working on my first 10 posts. So.. a tiny history, I am comming from 2+ yrs experience with WebOS and pre- & pre2. I am very familiar with customizing with preware, using all the patches & OC kernels.
So, what I have noticed, although webOS & Droid are both Linux based, it seems that they are fairly different when it comes to customizing.
This is my issue, I have a galaxy S2 epic 4g touch (sprint). When I got it, it was on EG30 (2.3.4). I was able to root and flash LOS and didnt have any issues. When the 2.3.6 update was pushed out, I didnt have a chance to unroot, so I ended up having to wipe/restore back to 2.3.4, then I tried to reroot, I got the no wifi and bootloop. I wiped and resotred again, all was ok, and I tried to root manually with the e4gtauto method, that I found for the EK02 stock system. Well, all was perfect, until just ran a backup with titanium, not restore, but just a back up. Is that my problem? Having titanium installed when rooted? I have been trying to follow QBKing77's processes, but need to just have a confirmation on the best process to root EK02 SPH-D710 on 2.3.6
Thanks,
sj

Titanium and root is not going to cause the issue you describe.
For some reason going from los to stock sometimes has wifi issues. I suggest you backup, then odin the eg30 factory restore in my sig
When that is done, do a ##786# reset from dialer and let the hamds free activation take place.
Verify wbether wifi works. If it does apply the ek02 ota update.
Then start restoring your data backup.
Thanks for the response. I have been able to get my phone updated to ek02 with out any issues. As of right now, it is a fresh install with the ota update ran to get to 2.3.6, I have all my apps/data restored. The only thing I want to do is root, install latest cwm, SU, and busybox. When I tried to manually root, it worked perfect, so it seemes, I didnt have any problems until the next morning. I was wondering too, do I need to be rooted already to do a nandroid backup?
sj

You need cwm to do a nandroid backup. Technically you do not need "root" to have cwm, but practically if you have cwm you'll probably have added root as well.
I guess I don't understand what "problem" you are seeing 1-day later. You said you got by the wifi problem. Any chance your problem is related to the restore? Are you restoring only user elements or system elements as well?
The wifi issue the ive seen I thought was a common problem with the latest update, but ive found that it is not connected to the bootloop problem. The wifi issue that ive seen is that it stops functioning until you restore back to stock. That is what I have done, reinstalled the stock ROM from sprint, updated to 2.3.6, then rooted. (currently not rooted) but every time ive tried, it seems to be unstable and I end up in a bootloop..
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 - Epic 4G Touch - SPH-D710 using XDA Premium
What I want to do is root as stable as possible. I dont have to, but from my experience, the devices are much better when rooted with the added functionality that you have access to.
Question about nandroid backups, does that type of back up take a snapshot of how your device is at the time of backup? Does restoring a nandroid backup put your phone back to the exact state it was when backed up? Root and all with apps and settings?
I want to be able to create a backup where I dont need to manually fix all my apps & settings, or is that even possible too?
Thanks for the help..

If you've rooted using the Auto Root package, there is no chance that is causing your bootloop (nor your wifi problems). Other root methods which involve a new kernel might cause something like that, but not for the general case or many people would be complaining.

I didn't re-read the whole thread to see what root method you used, but that is one of the reasons the Auto Root package exists. A minimalist approach to rooting that uses your existing stock kernel/rom.

It dumps the images of your system/data/cache/kernel partitions. It will restore everything to just like it was, except for the modem, which isn't backed up.
Thanks again for the responses. So, if I am rooting with the autoroot tool, what can be causing my no wifi & bootloop issues? I have tried with a fresh restore (to stock 2.3.4) and then root, and I have also tried a rooted EK02 ROM, both become unstable after resetting..
Im kinda bummed that I cant figure this out.
After it being super simple to root/oc 2.3.4, im frustrated that it is so different now.. :/
sj
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 - Epic 4G Touch - SPH-D710 using XDA Premium
Different kernels and OC are potential culprits. With the bootloop, I would think my first suspect would be OC/undervolt/etc. Not all CPUs can OC to the same speed and be stable.
So you factory restore to EG30 then wifi is working and no bootloop? Let it sit like that for 2 days. Then install root using auto root. Again let it sit for 2 days. Then finally start adding your other stuff one by one until wifi and instability gets introduced.
I can guarantee you 100% that rooting using Auto Root is not causing your wifi and bootloop issues. I'm saying this because of analysis of the changes Auto Root makes. It is just adding 3 files, which are mostly DORMANT unless you use them.
Concentrating on root as the cause of your issues is a waste of time. You need to look at the other changes.
Awsome, thanks for the response again. Should I install acs recovery or cwm to do a nandroid backup? I want to make sure I can restore easier than having to redo everything everytime, or is that expected to need to do everytime I "play" with this type of customizing.

Both are fine. Nandroid should get you back to where you started as long as you aren't doing modem changes.
does that mean as long as I back up stock EK02 2.3.6 before root, or does that mean I should nandroid backup at EG30 2.3.4 before root?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 - Epic 4G Touch - SPH-D710 using XDA Premium
Assuming you want to end up at EK02, I would make the cwm/nandroid backup immediately after applying the EK02 OTA update on top of EG30, before adding your own items back.
Run it completely stock for a day or two (however long it too in the past for the wifi/bootloop problem to crop up) If it doesn't show up, then start adding your stuff back in a few at a time. Once it shows up, you'll be able to isolate which most recent change caused the issue.
Awesome, thats what I figured, but I just wanted to be sure, I'll chime back in after I start if I run into problems.
Just to clarify, I cannot back up when I have it all set up with my apps/settings to where if I get a bootloop or something I can just restore with apps/settings restored? or is installing apps manually the only way to get the device back to how you like it for day2day usage?

You can make multiple backups, one at each stage, and restore to that point. The only thing you can't restore is the modem (you can flash the modem by hand, just not from a nandroid backup), but assuming you can get a stock EK02 which doesn't have any issues, then it doesn't matter as you won't care to go back to EG30, so your nandroid backups of EK02 should serve you fine to figure out what is causing your issue.
right on, thanks sf, moving from webOS to android will be a breeze with all of the great devs and such to ask questions. i was fairly impressed on how the development community for webOS was so open and friendly, i am glad to see that it is the very same way over here too!

Hi SF, i wanted to clarify my steps before i run through them. So i am currently running stock EK02, unrooted with plenty of apps currently installed. (do i need to be rooted to install cwm and then run nandroid backup?)
I was thinking my process is as follows:
1 - Backup my app list (I've found Ultimate Backup Pro is very nice)
2 - Remove external SD card and flash back to stock (outta the box) EG30/2.3.4
3 - Update to EK02/2.3.6
4 - Remount SD card, install CWM5, run nandroid backup. Is ACS recovery better?
5 - Root, wait 1 day
6 - Install SuperUser & BusyBox
7 - Start restoring apps a few at a time
? Does it help to reboot after each install for any reason. Also, are apps that require root access the usual reason that cause the wifi/bootloop issues, or can any app free or paid cause the same problems?
Again, i totally appreciate the info you have explained already! oh, btw, Merry Christmas!
see ya

Here is what I would suggest
1 - Backup my app list (I've found Ultimate Backup Pro is very nice)
2 - Remove external SD card
3 - ODIN Flash EK02 Factory Restore
4 - Remount SD card
5 - Use Auto Root package - Choose Option A to Root (ie install su, busybox)
6 - Use Auto Root package - Choose Option C, then EK02+CWM
7 - Boot into CWM recovery, make nandroid backup
8 - Run it stock for .5-1 day to make sure everything works
9 - Restore a few apps at a time (making note of what you restored), reboot and run for a little while to verify wifi works and it doesn't get stuck on boot
10 - run like that for a little bit, then repeat 9&10 until all apps restored or culprit found

I was running stock rooted G.B. 2.3.6 and just to see what would happen (I kinda knew already) I did the official upgrade to the ICS 4.0.3. Of course it went from UVKL1 to UVLE1 and I had backed everything up with Titanium Backup and also with Rom Manager. I lost root, because I did a factory reset because it wouldn't install the first 2 times. Oh, I was doing it through Kies. I wanted to do it by the book sort of.So after the install I tried to get root again but when I got into CWM recovery I had no functions working except reboot. No update.zip from sd, or anything else. I could scroll up and down and stop on the different options but when I pushed the button to make the choice it jumped back to reboot and that is all I can get. I rebooted and retried 4 or 5 times and same thing. So, now what ? I like the 4.0.3 but hate the massive amount of bloat and the ads and f**ked up notification popup/ads. I want my root back. I would be willing to start fresh again with a good, fast, everything works, custom ICS but don't know which to choose. that is one of the reasons why I tried this "official" upgrade. Again, as always, Thanks in advance for everyone who helps anyone here on XDA. K.K.-Out

OP: Here's CWM 5.0.2.6. After flashing and once youre back into your phone, you can install ROM manager and upgrade to whatever you want. Push this via Odin.
This happened to me. I had just had to wipe the cache in recovery and it booted. I would try that first
You have to use darkside wipe and darkside cache wipe. The regular recovery wipe isn't working properly.
You just need to Odin ics.

I got it solved you guys. Thanks to all of you. I did another factory reset, and then found the actual T989 Hercules .tar file (the one I used was from a post for ICS from November or December and was actually an Infuse tar file.) and reinstalled it. I was able to after I got cwm recovery old style not touch. Touch was what was giving me problems. So I Odin the new Hercules.tar and then rereinstalled Superuser zip and everything went smooth. The only thing I am seeing as a problem is the phone won't sleep. If I have the phone plugged in, I can't shut it off. It wants to immediately turn itself back on. I like to have it shut down and charge at night sometimes. But it won't let me. Any ideas? Thanks again everybody.
Okay so my sister updated her epic a few days ago, and has been having nonstop problems with the ICS build FF18 there are just so many bugs in this and wondering if there is anything she can do without wiping her data on the phone.
She has two options. After ROOTING and flashing a custom recovery, she can either:
1. Backup all the data she wants: apps, sms, system settings, home screen layout and call log.She can use ROM Toolbox, My Backup Root or Titanium Backup. Those are the best. I personally recommend ROM Toolbox, but My Backup Root can backup sms and call logs.
After that she can flash any ROM she wants and then restore the data of all the apps.
2. She can try to format system only and then flash any ROM she wants. This is the easiest way but it is very risky to do it.
The first method is the most recommended. It is always recommended to flash a clean install.
Hope this helps. You can find all the links you want for Rooting and Flashing in the Android Development section.

About the only option you would have then is using Kies to backup, wipe the phone with a factory reset and restore through Kies.
If you have been reading through the threads, then you should know that the brick bug is still a major concern with the latest ota.
But you really don't have any other option if you're not going to root.

My friend has a galaxy s2 and recently his son somehow managed to get a virus on it. I have a lot of experience with rooting, flashing, and all that fun stuff. Especially with the t mobile galaxy s2 since I have one as well. He asked me If I can restore his phone back to a new rom since it was acting weird. For example, if he saves a new contact or installs or uninstalls an app, if he reboots all those changes are gone. It is as if the phone keeps rebooting to a certain time. I am guessing a virus is causing this.
So the first I thought of was to download a rom (Jedi Knight 6) and did the typical wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache/dalvik, then flashed the rom with success. When I rebooted the phone, it was still the same, as if I did nothing in the recovery. I thought it may have been because I was CWM, so I installed goo manager and flashed the TWRP recovery through there. It gave me success but when I boot to recovery, it is still CWM. At this point I decided to use ODIN to restore it to the original stock rom. I followed the instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858435. First time I got a fail on ODIN, removed the battery and tried again and it gave me pass and the phone rebooted. When it did guess what? It was as if I did nothing.
I ran out of ideas. I did everything I can think of. I used the custom recovery to try to wipe everything and flash a new fresh rom but that failed. I even tried ODIN to restore it to stock but that failed as well. Is there anything else I can try? I did a lot of research but couldn't find anything, maybe someone can give me some tips?? Thank You in Advance!!
Can someone please help me?
This sounds very strange. You said even after you Odin back to stock it reverted back to what he had before you reinstall the stock ROM ? Was the phone rooted before you tried to help him?
Did you try an aosp ROM?

Yea I know its strange, and its not like I have no experience with these things. I was very suprised when that happened. Yes it was and is still rooted, Im sure because super su is on it. He is currently running JediMindTrick (ROM by ptmr3). I still dont know what to do. I will try an aosp rom, but if odin didnt do it I doubt another rom would lol.

Try wiping cache and dalvik. Then format system, data, cache using cwm. Factory reset then flash new rom using cwm or odin.
