Not sure which files you've downloaded and which procedure you are using, but perhaps its because the odin and recovery files are zip files and the cw mod file is a .tar file. It should open just fine in odin when you open odin.

What do u mean by Open? All u do is flash it with odin. Your computer won't open it unless you have the proper software for tar files but u don't have to open it. The other ones are zip files.

So I followed the sticky on rooting my friends SGS3 but I cannot get odin 3.04 to read the CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-Sprint-v5.zip file. It doesnt even show up at all when I open the pda section to select the file. I even tried to rename it from .zip to .tar and .tar.md5 but even with .tar it detects it but it wont flash it it has an error. On the phone it has red letters that say something like unsupported dev_type.

Did houbtry to open the zip and see if there was a tar inside?? I have had that happen a few times.

I would personally go with this method. I never use QBKing's videos, but I'm thinking its the same one he uses.
I'm to lazy to look up the file names but you are either trying to load a .zip into Odin when you need to extract a .tar file, or you are trying to load a .zip file meant to be flashed in recovery instead of Odin.
EDIT: Actually, I used this method. At the time I tried it was by far the easiest I saw. Just download the .zip in that thread, unzip it, load it in Odin, root.

You just flash the zip through CWM recovery like normal? I don't own this phone, I'm trying to upgrade my father in law's phone. I'm just trying to figure this all out before messing with his phone. I do NOT want to use Odin because I don't trust third party flashing utilities (have had bad luck in the past, particularly with Odin).
how do you go about doing it manually? I understand that the SGS2 doesn't have fastboot so something like
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-hercules.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
???

I am aware. I had to download it from the official Samsung site when i flashed my father in laws phone the first time. But i am a mac/linux user. Odin is not a good solution because it complicates a process that should be really straightforward, eg
Code:
sudo fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
By third party software i mean not part of the android sdk. Odin is proprietary closed source and only works on Windows with a select few samsung phones, whereas fastboot is intended to be universally accessible.
But back to my initial question, do you just flash the. Zip in recovery like normal?

Download the latest .img file from here
Download the above file.
Using adb shell or terminal emulator:
su
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-hercules-[xxx].img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22

Make certain that you get this command right. Typing the wrong number could result in a brick!

What he said, Tars are easier though
I upgraded to the LG G2 on Verizon and I am selling my phone for $150 tomorrow on Craigslist. However, I am rooted and on CM so I need to get back to stock. I try using Odin and the tars from [STOCK ROMS][CWM][ODIN] Stock ROM Repository - Find/Download Them All Here (SPH-D710) thread but I keep getting errors on the downloaded files. The files won't extract. It tells me "Cannot open file 'file name' as archive" when trying to extract it. I thought it may have been corrupted so I re downloaded the file (GB27) and tried again, but I have the same problem. I also downloaded FL24 and I have the same problem. I tried the .tar.md5.gz and the .tar.exe files and both give me issues. The .tar.md5.gz won't flash in Odin nor will they extract in winrar or 7zip. I need to get this done tonight so I can sell tomorrow. Am I doing something wrong? Is there an easier way to go back to stock/factory? Thank you.

Wow.. luck to sell your Galxy 4G epci touch for $150.. I was able to get one very good condition for $70
From what i have restored to stock so many time with one click Odin. And i believed download Odin file need to extract with Winrar or 7zip. After that, right click and select run with Administrator if you on Win 7 os. Please follow instruction where ever you download that file and shouldn't has any problem. good luck

ok i tired it but it didn't helped it still says FAIL! i have odin v1.85 and i checked onlt f reset timer and re-partition and placed the pit file in the pit section and ROM in pda section! am i doing something wrong?!
Try using Heimdall. Use this pit file ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53455783) with the 4.0.4 stock ROM from samfirmware.com and flash it using Heimdall with repartition checked. This is what worked for me when nothing else did. I was using Linux, but there is Heimdall for windows. Make sure you install Heimdall and Heimdall frontend as the frontend makes it a lot easier. Run the frontend for the above steps.

There are good videos on YouTube, but basically decompress the tar file to get more files. All the file names match the names in Heimdall except modem which I believe is amss.bin.

I don't have a link for the drivers (I use Linux, so there is no need for drivers,) but a Google search should lead you in the correct direction. Also, make sure you run Heimdall as admin, or the device might not be recognized. To get the individual files, decompress the tar.md5 or .tar file.
You do not want to use "Load Package." Go to the flash tab. First try it without repartition checked. Use 4.0.4 from samfirmware.com with this pit file. I have an image below explaining everything hopefully.
I just saw the Windows 8.1 part. Windows 8 can sometimes cause problems with Odin, but it is worth trying Heimdall. If you have a Linux machine and Windows doesn't work, I would try that.
