I heard about a new OTA update that was released today for the HTC one V. So I tried to download it. Went into settings -> About but I just can't seem to find the software update button. According to HTC that is where it should be. I see everything else (i.e help, network, phone identity, hardware info, software info & legal info). I am running MyOne v rom and Titanium KISS kernel (Latest releases). Anybody else run into the same problem? Also, would it be safe to do a straight OTA while running a phone with an unlocked bootloader, rooted and custom rom/kernel?

"I am running MyOne v rom" That is the problem. The official software updates are just for the stock roms, and cwm will be in the way also.

The myOne is BASED on stock, not stock. OTA updates are just for the original ROM for your phone, so the option is removed, because it can even brick your phone.
But look the post above me, devs can change the base of the phone quite fast, so it may a better choice, than return to stock, then update and see if anything has changed.
that's because you're using custom rom, dude...
try to revert it to stock rom, so you can find the update button on it

Yeah, root is probably the problem.
It's not FroYo though, it's just a bunch of minor changes and bugfixes. Also, it's not that new, it's been out unoffically for a couple of weeks. A lot of the custom roms on here and on modaco are based on the same 1.21 rom and will allow you to keep root and apps2sd. So you could flash to one of those, maybe?
I don't think this is the Froyo update. Apparently it's just an HTC update of some kind that doesn't make much of a change. Just keep trying, but in the mean time don't stress too much, you're not missing out on anything.
o really? so i cant install the OTA updates if i have root? that really sux and if i had known that when i flashed i wouldnt have done it.
i might reflash to this version as i want it for the facebook contacts bug fix. i dont have apps2sd as as far as im aware thats regulary bricking phones, that still the case?
Couldn't say. The Desire root was so half-assed and seemed to cause so many issues that I just didn't bother doing it, so I'm just going by what I've read
ok, well is it possible to do an update without having to flash and therefore resetup and backup all my settings etc? i.e. in the same way the OTA update would do it without resetting the device

The usb brick issue now has a fix available, and it wasn't due to a2sd!
really, thats excellent, u have a link?
Yep.

The recovery method was causing the problems. It still does, but they can now be fixed. people are working on the recovery and booting from SD card etc.
Edit: If you fancy trying out froyo on the desire you can flash a test rom from the dev forums. It's not for everyone yet as it's not totally working, but I'm using a froyo rom and find it's pretty decent for a hacked version!

A rather strange point of view!
Most rooted users wouldn't want to install an OTA because they would then lose root. On other phones (e.g. G1, Magic etc) most rooted ROMs have the OTA mechanism disabled.
The normal course of action for rooted users is to wait for someone to repack the update as a rooted update.zip.

Dave
this is my second thread about this issue, and PLEASE don't answer if you don't know how i could do this. i DON'T want a rooted/modded whatsoever 2.2, just the update that came today.
i guess my best bet would be flashing a htc europe generic rom and get the OTA, but how do i do that?
If your phone is from a network provider then it will more than likely need rooting even if you just want to flash it with a generic HTC ROM.
If it was purchased SIM free then it should already have a generic ROM and it will just be a matter of time before you get the OTA update.
Have you tried manually chacking for an update on the phone?

Here's how
I'm Rooted and I still want the official update after reading the warning.
1) Make a goldcard using this guide (For Desire too)
2) Download this
3) Double click it and follow the instructions.
4) When the update is ready to be pushed out, you will get a notification.
(taken from the Official foyo update thread....please search or read before making threads like this)
Also consider looking at this
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307683/howto-unroot-your-htc-desire/
BTW, if you do this you will not be able to unroot again untill a new root is found which could take weeks, or could never happen. You loose the ability to install custom roms, or non sense roms.
@ shetlander: it IS rooted, but i'm not able to flash generic, it simply doesn't work
@jedipottsy: i don't have a micro SD card available, but as i said, the phone IS rooted, so i there any way to do it without one? maybe a dump of a generic firmware instead of a ruu.exe?
edit: i forgot to mention, i had a leaked 2.2 build flashed before, but then flashed back to t-mobile rom. what doesn't work ist the flash to htc europe generic

nope, need an sdcard, can't flash an official over an unofficial, you need sd to restore to an older official.

Download this rom:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip
change the name to PB99IMG and put it on your gold card, boot into recovery and select fastboot, it will install the generic 1.21 rom, then when you check for updates the froyo update will be there, btw doing this wipes everything on your phone. Worked for me although I didn't install the froyo update as I am scared of the bootloader.
Hi all, I've rooted, unlocked and installed clockwork mod using mskips nexus toolkit (which worked brilliantly by the way) and the other night I recieved the 4.0.2 update request. Stupidly, in my moment of joy at a new update, I hit go without thinking about my newly unlocked and rooted phone. It hung on the android man/ exclammation mark screen and I had to do a battery pull. Thankfully it booted up fine and as far as my limited knowledge can tell its still rooted, still has clockwork recovery and is still 4.0.1. Having battered the search box I've discovered the problems lies at having clockwork recovery and not standard recovery.
I've yet to install a custom ROM (but probably will shortly) but I keep getting the 'Update available' thing pop up and even when I hit 'remind later' it seems to pop up every 30 mins or so.
So, my question is if I put a custom ROM with 4.0.3 will I still get the update notifications or will they realise I'm running 4.0.3 and leave me alone?
How does the google servers know what version I'm running - does it just go on their history of what updates they have sent you ?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can enlighten me......
Once you install a custom rom you won't get any OTA updates anymore. Even if they'd push 4.0.4.
Not sure how to fix your issue without installing a CR, but since you're saying you'll do it shortly your issue should be resolved soon I guess.
I thought that would be the case but having never installed a custom ROM I wasn't sure, kind of forces my hand into a custom rom now I've got clockwork recovery..... Need to do it ASAP cos every time I pick up the phone its got that damn update screen !
Cheers Tanith
To make sure you don't get the OTA update notification in a stock ROM, change the ro.build.fingerprint line in your build.prop file to the following:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/yakju/maguro:4.0.2/ICL53F/235179:user/release-keys

If you don't know how to do it then don't even try until you've read up on it...Google 'edit build.prop Android' and see what you get

rebooting phone now.... 4.1 is just so smooth and I've seen bad posts about 4.1.1 so I won't bother yet!
I guess it's because of different build fingerprints, but I'm also being offered the 4.1 update although I'm already on 4.1 (according to About System).
Hi everyone,
i know this topic is discussed allot but i would like to clear this out
I would like to ask a couple of questions .
I'm new to this ,bought me a htc one x.
douwding if i should root or not.
after root are there problems with sim card or connectivity?
applying custom rom would there also be connectivity problems?
can't accept anymore updates after root (OTA) (brick phone or bootloop, right )?
with latest custom roms ,how much would battery life increase (not talking about roms for overclocking)?
stock rom = integrated rom when you bought htc one x ?
when you unroot the htc one x is warranty back in place?
do you always need to clear all the data before you install custom rom?
sorry about all the questions
Thanks
Chris6161
Root and updates
That's a little more than a couple of questions no?
I'll try to answer some of them, hopefully right.
Official Updates
What I found with the HTC Sensation Root, is that it won't affect your updates IF you install the custom recovery back to the device. I believe the same might be true with the HTC One X.
If you stay with other recovery (like clockworkmod) the update won't work.
Connectivity
I don't believe you'll get any serious connectivity problems if you don't change radios.
Stock Rom = The original HTC One X Rom
But be careful, since there will be many different versions of HTC One X's out there, therefore there will be many different stock roms.
Clear data before installing
Mandatory, no. Recommended, Yes.

When you're on a custom ROM, you don't receive OTA updates. I suggest if you root your phone, make a Nandroid backup with clockworkmod recovery before flashing a custom ROM. (There a lot of tutorials out there)

That depends on what custom ROM you're going to use. I just got 1.28 firmware pushed to my phone. I restored a Nandroid backup of stock ROM, then downloaded the 1.28 update. I deleted the hboot update and recovery from it and installed it. I then flashed Android Revolution HD over it. 1.28 is the official HTC battery and screen fix update. But almost every custom ROM here based on 1.26 has the fix build in by the developer. So no worries about that. I read when you have configured a HTC Sense account. It will start some background processes every time you boot and those drain battery life.

If you undo everything: Yes. That means relock the bootloader again and flash the stock ROM back. Delete every trace that you rooted your device. Don't forget to flash stock recovery.

I only clear data if I get unexpected problems with the ROM not mentioned in the thread. But if you go from cyanogen mod or some other AOSP rom to a sense or touchwiz rom, or vice versa do clear data.

Root is just a change in permissions, allowing you access to system files. It doesn't change anything in the system itself. There should be no change in connectivity.

Depends on the ROM, what base was used, and what was changed. Stick to ROMs that are used by a good number of others, and proven to be reliable, and you should be fine.

You may lose root, and true (depending on what was updated) you may be stuck in a bootloop. Simple rule, if rooted, don't install OTA's or any other "official" updates. Rooted, safe versions to flash are almost always get posted here, and quickly.

Again, this depends on what was changed in the ROM. And even so, results tend to vary from user to user. No easy answer to this question.

If you are updating to a new version of the same custom ROM, you usually fine keeping data (but check the instructions for that ROM for more details).
If the going between custom ROMs, or stock to a custom ROM, if the base is similar, you may be okay keeping data. But you may also have random and severe bugs. The safest thing to do in these cases is to wipe data.
This temp root is a NOGO considering the dead battery bug
If you root just make sure you don't run out of juice. You will not be able to charge the H1X while it is off!!
Which means you have to fiddle for hours to charge iit just a minimum to turn it back on and fully charge. Maybe you are unlucky and you have bricked it, once it has lost juice.
So root to me is a far way off until this problem ist solved.
I want to update my phone through Samsung Kies from GB to the official ICS update. If I do it this way, all of my data & apps should stay on the phone, which I want. My phone currently has:

I know from before that updating the phone requires it to be stock, so my question is, what do I need to do in order to be able to update to ICS through Kies and can I do it w/o losing my apps & data in the process.

It should work fine through Kies although I'm not sure if the kernel might cause a conflict, I would doubt it though if you are still on a stock rom. I did mine rooted from GB stock and the latest radio update, also had CWM.. Maybe others have input..

I tried through Kies and it said that my phone could not be upgraded. It gives me the message "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" ...I went back, flashed the stock kernel and tried again with no luck. :/
..I think i'm going to stick with GB for now anyway though bc I've heard nothing but bad reviews about the official ICS release. I love the way it looks & I had darkside evo2 for a little bit back a while ago and it was super fast but I went back to GB bc I need the fully functionality of my phone and GPS wasn't working
I went from DEICS to Juggernaut GB and havn't looked back. Its In the RM app.
Most say its the best ROM out there and I wouldn't doubt it.
