I want to update my phone through Samsung Kies from GB to the official ICS update. If I do it this way, all of my data & apps should stay on the phone, which I want. My phone currently has:
ClockworkMod Recovery
Rooted
Bullet Kernel
Stock ROM
Android V 2.3.5
baseband- T989UVKL1
I know from before that updating the phone requires it to be stock, so my question is, what do I need to do in order to be able to update to ICS through Kies and can I do it w/o losing my apps & data in the process.
Thanks!

It should work fine through Kies although I'm not sure if the kernel might cause a conflict, I would doubt it though if you are still on a stock rom. I did mine rooted from GB stock and the latest radio update, also had CWM.. Maybe others have input..

I tried through Kies and it said that my phone could not be upgraded. It gives me the message "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" ...I went back, flashed the stock kernel and tried again with no luck. :/
..I think i'm going to stick with GB for now anyway though bc I've heard nothing but bad reviews about the official ICS release. I love the way it looks & I had darkside evo2 for a little bit back a while ago and it was super fast but I went back to GB bc I need the fully functionality of my phone and GPS wasn't working
I went from DEICS to Juggernaut GB and havn't looked back. Its In the RM app.
Most say its the best ROM out there and I wouldn't doubt it.
Plus 1.8ghz! BAM!

I just did the root, nand, and radio
However I didn't know that I was going back to 2.1
What are the cons of 2.1 vs 2.2 and how long usually before there is an updated rooted 2.2?
Thanks
2.2 is out officially??? Where/how can I/we get it?
It just automatically downloaded when I got my phone yesterday. Now I'm wondering if I should go back and update and wait then re root later or just wait.
Are you sure you had 2.2? Where did you get your phone? What is your hardware version?
Positive I had it. I got it at walmart yesterday. As soon as I activated it downloaded like three updates.
I was using flash etc.

Flash lite?
Flash works with 2.1 also (at least on the evo)
I'm not really sure. I just know it said 2.2 and not 2.1.
also my hardware is 2.2
I wish I would've known I would've backed up before rooting. I didn't see any reason since the phone was new with nothing on it.
I just checked and it said no updates available.
So in order to go back to stock all I have to do is reflash with the stock rom. Just throw it on sd and flash as normal?

Just flash RUU from your computer.
Settings > About > Hardware, your Hardware Version is 2.2, NOT 002 or 003?
no its 002 sorry running on two hours of sleep here.
Ok i'm going to try to go back to stock then upgrade.
at least I know I can root it again. maybe faster next time too.
well I unrooted and got some prl updates but no firmware
here goes
Take the battery out of the for about 5 sec then put the battery back in and go in to recovery and try reflashing the rom that work for me
One of three things happened..
You are either have a nexus one and are in the wrong forum..
Are mistaken that you had 2.2 prior to root..
Or you're just trying to mess with everyone..
2.2 is not out in any way officially on any HTC phone, so you couldn't have had it. And no, you couldn't have been the only person in the country to have accidentally gotten it somehow.
Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

I will again suggest ravers rc8 ics rom. I havent seen any issues other than missing wifi calling. No bloatware at all. Rare FCs...
Btw I amnot sure 989-d is also supported by that rom, but worth trying definitely

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
(pure stock?)
How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade
Hey I recently updated my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SII to 4.0.4 and I want to know if there is any way to donwgrade it back to the 4.0.3 version...I really don't like the new update because I just got my phone and was finally getting used to everything, and I thought that the upgrade wouldn't be too bad.. but I don't like it AT ALLL....Any help please?

You probably mean 2.3 not 4.0.3. The differences between 4.0.4 and 4.0.3 are pretty much bug fixes, nothing changed really in the user interface. To change back to 2.3 go to the development section and look for a rom based on EL29. EL29 is most likely the version you were one before the upgrade.

Be sure to know that your contacts are sync'd, that you do the appropriate backups of data (I'd suggest Kies for you) and know that you will have to re-setup your phone going backwards.
Well, considering Sprint didn't OTA anything that was 4.0.3, you'll have to get one of the build leaks that may still have active downloads.. You can find those here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
If you're wanting to go back to Ginger Bread, which is 2.3.6, and the official update before ICS, you can go to the following link after this sentence... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 - If you use this option, you can stop the notification by using the information in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774282
Or - If you want to go back completely stock, no root, and clean up your storage - Use the EK02, Reset Data, One Click. Don't apply the OTA update to EL29 just yet, do a factory reset, then apply the EL29 update. You'll have to continually ignore the ICS update since you won't be rooted.
Be sure to use the Full Restore, Reset Data option and not the No Data one if you happen to use the one clicks...
I edited this and removed my smart a$$ comments. Wasn't helpful nor warranted. Wouldn't want it done to me. My apologies.
So been while since I've done much rom flashing. Had an EVO for 2+ years and tried lots of ROMS, but then got the sprint GNEX because I just wanted vanilla android without having to mess with ROMS as much. As such, I'm just running stock 4.1.1, with it rooted for a few apps and wifi tethering which I flashed after rooting. Looking to update to the new stock Sprint 4.2.1 firmware, keeping root and wifi tethering. Back on the EVO, every time there was a new firmare update, someone would post a "stock rooted" ROM (not that I used them), that didn't have anything done to it, but can't seem to find that with the latest Sprint GNEX update, only one that seems to come close has been fiddled with, deodexed, causing some issues. I'm also not used to flashing without my data being on a removable SD card. So I'm wondering, is there a way to just flash a rooted version of the Sprint firmware, keeping my data and wifi tethering (or by just flashing a new 4.2.1 wifi tethering patch), or can I use OTA rootkeeper, flash the OTA update, and restore root? I've got latest TWRP recovery btw, which it seems I would have to change back to stock recovery to flash the OTA update correct? Thanks for any direction anyone can provide
First off, im not sure about wifi tethering, but it is an option on gsm android settings. I would use OTA rootkeeper, but you need the stock recovery first to accept the ota. Did you check this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. Swear I tried to search other threads before asking but somehow missed that one, looks like it should tell me what I need. Think I was looking too much in the development forum for a full ROM to flash, and missed that thread in the general forum about just applying the update. Thanks again!!

Yea, if you wanted the ota, in short you would have to grab the stock non rooted firmware kies , I prefer Odin and just get back to stock stock. You may be able to hide root, and grab the ota but I've never got into that. I prefer to back up whatever needs it via titanium saved to ext card, wipe completely and just start fresh with the kk update. That way you getbthe modem, you get the boot loader, the new partitions etc etc and IMO a more solid user experience. Some may beg to differ, but, updates are updates for a reason and ne6 is far more stable and reliable than nb4 was. Kernel source is cleaner, ROM bits were cleaned up, volte was added and its just better. If you've never checked tweaked ROM out before man, you are missing out. Its the way touch wiz was meant to be, dwitherall is a friggin smali destroyer, and his work is the work others strive to do. Thats just my two cents and what I would do, but if you wanted to just flash a kk ROM right now, ya probably could, but you aren't getting the benefits of why is was the upgrade in the first place. Users may disagree with my statement but, the real devs, would agree ne6 is a far more solid base to be on, and once tweaked is done is game over. Thanks for the time man
