USB Mass storage mode - can't see drive in Windows.

Hi, I'm having trouble when using USB mass storage mode on my Kaiser TyTN II with Android Froyo.
When I connect the phone can't see the SD contents from the FAT32 partition.
I have flashed on my TyTN II the latest 2.6.32 kernel from here, and i'm using the Incubus26Jc's Super FroYo RLS16. I have partitioned my 4gb SDHC using GParted to 3 partitions, one of ~3gb in FAT32, next to one in ext2 of ~64mb, and the last one in ext2, of ~1gb for the system.
Strangely enough when using Ubuntu Linux, it sees ands mounts all three partitions without problems. And when inserting my SD to a card reader on windows, it sees the FAT32 partition and I can browse it, but I want to do this with the card on my phone and on windows.
What can be wrong?

You can't do nothing, actually Adb driver for our kaiser is not working on windows...

I'm testing now on my Windows XP laptop and it works... strange.
My home computer is running Windows 7 (and ubuntu) can't it be a problem of w7?

Oo are you serious?

ADB was fixed in the latest version of l1q1d's kernel, but is still incompatible with Windows 7. At least, in my case it doesn't work in Windows 7, causes my computer to freeze until I pull the plug on the phone.

2.6.25 kernel has nice compatibility for Dual Mount SD Widget, check if Super Froyo supports .25 kernels. For me Not So Super Froyo is doing the job on .25 kernel. Default USB Mass Storage mode never works. You can use Dual Mount SD Widget to do the job
For adb, I had no problem with it on .32 while I am using XP.

Now I understand
Windows can ONLY ONLY see the 1st primary partition on your Removable Flash drive. Plus, linux FS are not recognizable for windows. (you can use Partition Magic or a linux FS supported partition software to actually view them that they exist).
If you want to partition your SD Card in windows, just install HITACHI Microdrive Driver for your SD Card's removable storage and it will identify as a removable hard disk. (I actually did that to have 3 partitions on my 16GB Data Traveler )

Well I already knew that, but I want to see at least the FAT32 partition for application install, loading mp3, and occasional data storage.
I'm only a couple of days in the android on kaiser world, what is ADB? I read that you need some drivers to make it work, and can be used to install apps etc. but when I connect the phone it doesn't request me drivers unless I select mass storage mode. On Windows 7 it sees it as a Disk in device manager but can't see the drives. On XP it has no problems, it can browse FAT32 part.
So if Android is exposing the phone as a mass storage drive why it doesn't work in 7?

Because android's itself "Turn on USB Mass Storage" mode doesnt work. Use a Multi Mount SD Widget or Dual Mount SD Widget or SD-Share to do the job

Try installing Hitachi Microdrive Driver in Windows 7 and see if it does any better

Thanks for the tips. Are you suggesting that installing the Hitachi Microdrive Driver (by the way, I noticed that it's intended for Windows XP) could help in mounting the device using Android's built-in mount option?

Hitachi microdrive driver is intended to identify your Flash Drive as USB Hard Drive to see all partitions correctly in windows and allows you to partition your USB flash drive
Nope it wont help, since .32 kernel has not supported USB driver which hinders the USB Mass storage functionality, even through Dual mount apps.
If you are using Kyle's FAT Free Froyo or Not So Super Froyo, install a .25 kernel and then use Dual Mount USB app. It will work for sure.
Another Work Around:
If you just want to move some files to SD Card and you connect your network connection through wifi, you can try ES File Explorer to view Windows Based File Shares, just like you are seeing shared folders from another PC I use it since I connect my mobile and my PC through a wifi router

[Q] Can't mount USB Storage on my Windows 7 PC

The problem is more about my PC than the Desire as it works as normal on other PCs but not on mine.
When I plug in my Desire it asks me to mount the USB Storage and when I accept the Device shows as "Removable Disk (F" opening it results in "Please insert a Disk into...".
Under Device Manager it shows as "Portable Device" and under "Disk drives".
I uninstalled every device with Android in it and then rebooted my PC and reconnected my phone but still no luck, I also tried installing the newer HTC USB drivers (didn't work) and then uninstalling them (didn't help). It must be because of some driver but I have no clue how to fix it.
Does someone know?
I have the SDK, the unrevoked HBOOT Drivers, the HTC USB Drivers (from the Sync app) and Windows told me all the USB Mass storage drivers got installed and should be working.

When I mount the USB storage, got to the drive in the Device Manager and select populate in the properties and then go to the Disk Management I see the Disk but it's labled as RAW. When I then re-format it, it actually works until I unmount it and then re-mount which presents me again with my previous problem.

If you just want mount the USB storage, you no need to install other software or SDK.
I think that is your pc's problem, try check your pc.

Are you using the original micro usb cable from HTC or a dodgy cable you bought really cheap? There are a lot of bad cables around.
It could also be that your SD card is about to die.

To mount the Desire's SD Card in storage mode you don't need any drivers than the ones came with the OS - tested on XP, Vista, Seven and Ubuntu - it's like sticking in an USB pendrive / external HDD.
Did you tried a different USB port?
Also try set USB debugging mode on (Settings\Application\Developement)

Original cable; SD card mounts fine when taken out and used with an external reader; tried other ports; no problems on other PCs; Debugging on or off doesn't help
I know it's my PC but I don't know why and how to fix it. I also know that it installs everything automatically and I don't need to install any other drivers but one that is installed, seems to break everything.

What about USB extensions? Do you use this @ your PC? How many other USB Devices are connected to your PC? Maybe your phone doesnt get enough voltage via USB. I know both problems from my personal experience.
So first, if you use extension cable, remove it and connect your micro USB cable directly to the board.
Second, try to remove 1 or 2 other devices plugged in via USB (scanner, printer, cardreader[!], webcam, for testing purposes even mouse or keyboard)
Maybe this fixes your issues.

I doubt the power being the problem as my Galaxy S II had no issue and as stated above I could kind of get it to work but not as it should have worked.

You DOUBT the power beeing the problem, or you tried and can EXCLUDE this possibility?

Considering what I've already tried (as detailed in previous posts) I think I can exclude the power being the issue.
I've also synced and charged an SGS2, an iPod touch and an iPad from the same plug without any issues.

I tried so many things in the device manager... nothing worked...
Once I could get it to mount correctly but only until I unmounted once, after that it would go right back to my problem.

I give up... I even restored Windows 7 to a previous state and it did not help.

Made some progress and can reproducably access the SD card but sadly only until I unmount and afterwards I have to run through the procedure again to get access:
I had an USB Harddrive formatted as NTFS through NTFS-3G on my mac and my Windows 7 PC also wanted to format it when I plugged it in and it showed up as RAW in Computer Management. I then remembered chkdsk did a chkdsk I: /f and it worked again even after a clean eject and remount.
I then tried this on my Desire as the symptoms seemed the same or at least related. Here is my console output:

After this, Windows showed that it mounted DESIRE correctly and asked me what I'd like to do with it and I could browse the card and do whatever I wanted.
But this isn't ideal behaviour and I'd love it if my Desire would just show up as normal and work normally when I connect it to my PC. Does this give a clue on where the problem might be?

I had a simular problem
I could mount the sd on my desktop but not on my laptop.
So apparently it was not a cable problem...
But finnally I use the original cable and now it mounts on both computer.

Install Windows from Phone?

I am not sure the correct section to put this into, but here goes.
I have heard ways to install Windows from a USB stick. I was wondering since I do not have a USB stick big enough and also a blank DVD on hand if I could place the image onto my Android SD card and install/reformat my computer that way.

I don't think you could because the computer hardware doesn't recognize the sd card as a mass storage device, the software does, if you get what I mean.

I don't think it's possible to write a Windows live disk to the SD card and use it to format the Windows installation.

This in theory could be done. The one issue you might have is your computer might not recognize the SD card as a bootable option. If you can boot to USB device it might work. Also it isn't as simple as copying a windows install disk to the USB there is work that needs to be done to get it to read correctly and install. If you google linux pen drive I think it has a option to copy the windows cd to the drive boot to linux and install windows.

Yes you can do it. Sd card readers are on a usb connection to the motherboard of a pc. You have to make the sd card a bootable disk though the same way you would for a flash drive.

Never done it with the epic but I used to run puppy linux off my winmo samsung blackjack 2 on a thin client wyse computer. It had a micro sd card in it too. You would need to use a linux distro to be able to properly create a windows installation on another form of media though. Good luck

[Q] Bootable Micro SD card

I have a Samsung Epic 4g running the latest Cyanogenmod 7 nightly. What I'm trying to do is this: From Clockworkmod, mount USB storage, and from that, connect the phone to a computer and use the SD card as a bootable USB device.
I'm using SARDU to make a multiboot image for Linux, Gparted, etc. but to no avail. The phone is for some reason, listed as a FDD instead of a bootable USB. When booting from the phone anyways, it merely displays a copyright screen of Syslinux instead of loading the SARDU menu.
I've managed to format the SD card in such a way that it is listed as a USB device in my computer's BIOS, but then the SD card isn't recognized by android and is considered "damaged".
I know this has been asked a few times before, but nothing is quite like what I'm trying to do, and none of them have an exact method on how to do this.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

[Q] SD card no longer recognised in windows

I can no longer access my SD card from my windows pc when connected by USB. This occurred on the same day that i unlocked my bootloader, installed the java sdk and android sdk.
I have the phone set MSC (mass storage mode) and connect it by USB as I always did in the past.
Windows recognises that something is connected and a new removable drive is created.
In the past my phone would give me the option to connect the memory card, however this no longer happens.
Clicking on the new drive in Windows causes a message box to pop up saying "Please insert a disk in drive..."
No amount of fiddling with usb settings (debugging, MTP, etc) plugging / unplugging or rebooting has made any difference. I've tried reinstalling USB drivers and removing & reinstalling Sony PC companion. I've also tried accessing the sd card from ubuntu in a virtual machine, but that also doesn't work.
I can view the SD cards contents from my phone and through an adb link.
Does anyone have a solution? From extensive googling, the only things i can see that i haven't tried is:
- trying a different cable (which has been suggested but sounds pretty daft to me)
- reformatting the sd card
Any other suggestions? If i do have to format the sd card, are there any good guides or is there anything i need to avoid doing???

Can you read the card from a card reader.
if you can it is then either drivers or the cable

unfortunately i don't have a card reader. I'll give it a try tonight in my girlfriend's phone and with a usb cable and see how that works out.

it will definitely work with a card reader...this problem occurs when usb storage suddenly stops working as soon as usb is connected..i guess best way is to reinstall ROM if the problem persist.

Flashing firmware (global v62) got it working again )
