The problem is more about my PC than the Desire as it works as normal on other PCs but not on mine.
When I plug in my Desire it asks me to mount the USB Storage and when I accept the Device shows as "Removable Disk (F" opening it results in "Please insert a Disk into...".
Under Device Manager it shows as "Portable Device" and under "Disk drives".
I uninstalled every device with Android in it and then rebooted my PC and reconnected my phone but still no luck, I also tried installing the newer HTC USB drivers (didn't work) and then uninstalling them (didn't help). It must be because of some driver but I have no clue how to fix it.
Does someone know?
I have the SDK, the unrevoked HBOOT Drivers, the HTC USB Drivers (from the Sync app) and Windows told me all the USB Mass storage drivers got installed and should be working.
//Edit:
When I mount the USB storage, got to the drive in the Device Manager and select populate in the properties and then go to the Disk Management I see the Disk but it's labled as RAW. When I then re-format it, it actually works until I unmount it and then re-mount which presents me again with my previous problem.
If you just want mount the USB storage, you no need to install other software or SDK.
I think that is your pc's problem, try check your pc.
Are you using the original micro usb cable from HTC or a dodgy cable you bought really cheap? There are a lot of bad cables around.
It could also be that your SD card is about to die.

@ First line he say it works as normal on other PCs but not on mine
so maybe not cable problem
To mount the Desire's SD Card in storage mode you don't need any drivers than the ones came with the OS - tested on XP, Vista, Seven and Ubuntu - it's like sticking in an USB pendrive / external HDD.
Did you tried a different USB port?
Also try set USB debugging mode on (Settings\Application\Developement)
Original cable; SD card mounts fine when taken out and used with an external reader; tried other ports; no problems on other PCs; Debugging on or off doesn't help
I know it's my PC but I don't know why and how to fix it. I also know that it installs everything automatically and I don't need to install any other drivers but one that is installed, seems to break everything.
What about USB extensions? Do you use this @ your PC? How many other USB Devices are connected to your PC? Maybe your phone doesnt get enough voltage via USB. I know both problems from my personal experience.
So first, if you use extension cable, remove it and connect your micro USB cable directly to the board.
Second, try to remove 1 or 2 other devices plugged in via USB (scanner, printer, cardreader[!], webcam, for testing purposes even mouse or keyboard)
Maybe this fixes your issues.
No extension cable
I doubt the power being the problem as my Galaxy S II had no issue and as stated above I could kind of get it to work but not as it should have worked.
You DOUBT the power beeing the problem, or you tried and can EXCLUDE this possibility?
Considering what I've already tried (as detailed in previous posts) I think I can exclude the power being the issue.
I've also synced and charged an SGS2, an iPod touch and an iPad from the same plug without any issues.
I tried so many things in the device manager... nothing worked...
Once I could get it to mount correctly but only until I unmounted once, after that it would go right back to my problem.
I really have no clue on how I could get this to work again
I give up... I even restored Windows 7 to a previous state and it did not help.
Made some progress and can reproducably access the SD card but sadly only until I unmount and afterwards I have to run through the procedure again to get access:
I had an USB Harddrive formatted as NTFS through NTFS-3G on my mac and my Windows 7 PC also wanted to format it when I plugged it in and it showed up as RAW in Computer Management. I then remembered chkdsk did a chkdsk I: /f and it worked again even after a clean eject and remount.
I then tried this on my Desire as the symptoms seemed the same or at least related. Here is my console output:
C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk H: /F
The type of the file system is FAT32.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y

After this, Windows showed that it mounted DESIRE correctly and asked me what I'd like to do with it and I could browse the card and do whatever I wanted.
But this isn't ideal behaviour and I'd love it if my Desire would just show up as normal and work normally when I connect it to my PC. Does this give a clue on where the problem might be?
Hello
I had a simular problem
I could mount the sd on my desktop but not on my laptop.
So apparently it was not a cable problem...
But finnally I use the original cable and now it mounts on both computer.
Hope this helps

[SOLVED] : using dropbox now for file transfer...
After I installed the latest build of stock XDAndriod on my Rhodium, it does not connect to my PC (win-XP) using USB port. I have tried multiple times to reset my phone and re-flash my winmo with no help.
My computer does not detect a USB device at all when I connect my phone when in Android. When I plug in my phone, nothing happens. But my phone does begin charging from the USB port and does detect that is plugged in to a power source.
How do I get my PC to recognize my phone?
Phone details:
H/w : standard AT&T tilt2
Winmo : JackOS build Aug/19
XDAndroid version - [MJG]Rhod.2.2Froyo.083010.rar
Thanks,
Dhanvi
PS: I did check the thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=641444&highlight=USB+problems and that hasn't solved my problem.
If you read the port status, USB data connections are not currently supported. Only charging is supported via USB.
Thanks for that pience of info, but I do not see anything saying USB on the project development page. Is there some other page that I should be looking at too?
If that is indeed the case, then how do I transfer stuff over from my PC to my SD card when in andriod ? Is there any other method?
Thanks.

Great Idea but waiting for more help
Hey Fist post here about the xAndroid. I have to say this rocks!! First time I got it up I said to myself this is how a phone is supposed to run.
To the questions do any of you know if this USB connection is going to be fixed anytime soon sine I would really like to see if you can connect Google App Inventor to the phone while on this great mod.
Thanks

By far the simplest way to get it done.
I went for installing ADB and droid explorer on my pc. It works, but I have much less hair now.
with the current way xdandroid is built, I can't see it being probable that usb mode will ever work (could be wrong, so feel free to correct me).
i.e. currently we have a FAT partition on the SD card and we loopback mount files on it to act as the android system and data file systems, and the fat can then act as a normal SD card.
because of this, it can't expose the FAT partition to anyone outside of the OS instance (i.e. 2 OS's will be writing to the FAT table (redundant I know) independently and can clobber each other.
On the other hand, I think the way the cyanogenmod port works, by partitioning the SD card into multiple partitions to hold the different sets of data (though not sure it takes it all the way), is an approach that could be made to work for usb access, if separate partitions would be made for the system and data file systems on the SD card and a third partition just used for the FAT FS. This way, android can unmount the FAT partition only (nothing else depending on it) and let it be accessed by whatever machine the device is attached to over usb.
there's a reason its not done this way currently as its much harder to manage and continuously update.
just my 2 cents.
Hm, does this also mean, you can not use tools like MyPhoneExplorer (Outlloksync via UBS with Android phones) due to absence of data over USB? Seems like a decent app, but it does not see my TYTN over USB, says no conenction. I also note, Windows XP is trying to install an 'Android Phone' driver when I connect the TYTN to the Laptop. Is this all somehow related?
Oddly, my phone decides to turn on USB after it's been sitting plugged in for a time, which exceeds an hour. It's like it checks for USB connectivity at some long interval.

With Android on my wife's HD2 (booting from Windows via Haret.exe) USB mass storage mode works fine, so it's definitely doable.

No clue how - when you're in WinMo, what happens when you plug in your phone and select to use it as a disk drive? It unmounts the SD in WinMo and mounts it on your PC. Same thing would happen in Android, but when the card can't be unmounted - as Android is running off of it.

I've been told it's flaky on the HD2 and not recommended for use anyways. Still not sure how it works tho.
We won't have true SD card access (USB mass storage) until Android is flashed onto our devices. Until then, true USB mass storage will NOT work.
In the meantime, there's ADB. Perhaps the HD2 guys hacked something up based on ADB, who knows.
It was working fine yesterday, but today in MIUI (same as yesterday), I can tell the phone to mount the SD card but it doesn't show up on my computer. So the phone says it's mounted, but it apparently isn't.
To make sure it wasn't a problem with the ROM, I rebooted into to CWM and mounted there, same thing. CWM says it's mounted but it doesn't show up on my computer.
I can view and edit the files on the SD card through ES File Explorer, but the SD card no longer appears on my computer?
It's not the USB port, I plugged in a flash drive and it worked. And I'm using the stock HTC Cable.
This is on my Inspire.
I'm inclined to say it's the wire, but nothing happened to the wire between today and yesterday. It was just sitting on the floor, and it still charges the device.
I did reboot my computer and phone...still no luck.
Does USB debugging have anything to do with it? I've been rooted for months and I never disabled and it didn't cause problems :/
Out of the two inspires in my household, one of my cables stopped working only a month after I bought it. It still works for charging but does not work for data. Have you tried a different cable just to be sure.
It might not be the phone nor the Rom since you've done some basic trouble shooting. It could possibly be your PC. Have you tried it on another computer? Possible driver problems or drive letter conflict might cause it not to display in Computer.
You can check whether Windows has detected your device by going to Start > Devices and Printers, it will pop up there if it is detected. Otherwise you can also check Disk Management. To do this just right-click on Computer > Manage > Disk Management. If you see the removable disk and sure that it is your SD card then it might be a driver letter conflict which you can easily fix by right-clicking on the removable disk and clicking "Change Driver Letter and Paths" and changing it to an unused driver letter. I've had similar issues with USB drives in the past. Hope this helps!
Cheers
Hai,
Up until recently my Evo 4G connected to my computer with a USB data cable fine to both of my Win 7 x64 computers. Not to long ago I flashed a rom of MIUI (can't remember which), and my data cable stopped working. Sense then I have bought a new cord, flashed new roms, installed drivers (I didn't see x64 ones), uninstalled/reinstalled HTC Synch. Nothing works.
When I plug in the phone Windows makes the usb connect "ding" noise, then a pop up says the usb device could not be identified. If I wiggle the cord Windows makes the ding noise making me think the phone is only partially connecting? When I connect it nothing pops up on the phone itself. The charge light only comes on.
What should I do?
Hey,
Try booting into the bootloader and mount usb or toggle usb depending on your recovery and that should fix the problem if not, it might be an issue with MIUI! It has been giving me trouble when I tried to flash it so I couldnt use it, but many times between roms and kernals sometimes you will loose usb and it isnt the cable! try flashing a new rom and let me know how it goes!
stevo!
Hit the thanks if I helped!
I went into recovery and mounted usb, and sd card and the windows pop up came up. It said the usb device has malfunctioned, and windows could not recognize it. Same thing when I reboot. Seems to connect/disconnect when i move the cord with that pop up anytime it does connect.
I've flashed CM7 nightly sense then and now I am on [10-11-11][ROM] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.3][2.3.7 Stable] #Stablistic. I did notice when I click the pop up in windows it takes me to the info page for the unidentified usb and it says there is no driver installed for it.
Alright, I have two guesses.
I am glad you were able to mount it, and as long as it is reading i really dont think its the cord.
Now did you partition your sd card? because if you did you turned it to a linux file and your windows pc cannot read that
can you reformat your sd card and try it again?
If you keep having issues pm me.
I have had problems with that on my wifes lg optimus so what i did i took out the SD card and downloaded Mini tool partition wizard home edition 7 i used this to reparation the sd card and then reinserted the sd card and it worked after that. note i did put a ext 3 partition on the sd card. also if you have two primary partitions on the card widows will only recogize the first one. not sure if that is the issue in this case but i hope this helps
here is the partition wizard download

I can no longer access my SD card from my windows pc when connected by USB. This occurred on the same day that i unlocked my bootloader, installed the java sdk and android sdk.
I have the phone set MSC (mass storage mode) and connect it by USB as I always did in the past.
Windows recognises that something is connected and a new removable drive is created.
In the past my phone would give me the option to connect the memory card, however this no longer happens.
Clicking on the new drive in Windows causes a message box to pop up saying "Please insert a disk in drive..."
No amount of fiddling with usb settings (debugging, MTP, etc) plugging / unplugging or rebooting has made any difference. I've tried reinstalling USB drivers and removing & reinstalling Sony PC companion. I've also tried accessing the sd card from ubuntu in a virtual machine, but that also doesn't work.
I can view the SD cards contents from my phone and through an adb link.
Does anyone have a solution? From extensive googling, the only things i can see that i haven't tried is:
- trying a different cable (which has been suggested but sounds pretty daft to me)
- reformatting the sd card
Any other suggestions? If i do have to format the sd card, are there any good guides or is there anything i need to avoid doing???
Can you read the card from a card reader.
if you can it is then either drivers or the cable

unfortunately i don't have a card reader. I'll give it a try tonight in my girlfriend's phone and with a usb cable and see how that works out.
it will definitely work with a card reader...this problem occurs when usb storage suddenly stops working as soon as usb is connected..i guess best way is to reinstall ROM if the problem persist.
Flashing firmware (global v62) got it working again )

Follow up on USB Host
I too am using an HTC One X running 4.1.1
I've got an OTG cable and have tried connecting a thumb drive and card reader. Both work. The drives are visible and accessible on the phone. That's USB storage which isn't the same as USB Host, but it shows that the port is active.
I can plug in the dongle for a wifi mouse, it too is recognised and I'm able to use the mouse to navigate around on the phone. This, as far as I understand, is actually USB Host in action.
The problem arises when I try to connect a DSLR and use a camera controller app like Helicon Remote or DSLR Dashboard. The app doesn't recognise that the camera is connected.
What's the difference between the wifi mouse and the camera?
Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
In fact, there is a problem that any USB storage device on the phone creates the following folder structure:
/ storage / usb / Android / data / com.htc.album / .thumbnails /
Then create multiple copies, can be found in the internal memory, same-path, including folders that contain thumbnails, but empty.
So because of these being used constantly sticks, so when the capture traces of the settings, then any writes to the phone to choose from, but it can not happen, but the capture button will be disabled, but only while again not I step into the menu.
The above mentioned directories erased because the phone reboot always create them again.
If the phone was not rebooted since I've used it and the flash drive has been physically removed it, then if I connect again, it appears no file until you restart the phone.
