[Q] galaxy s3 i747m ROGERS to jelly bean cm10

hey guys
let me start off by saying i am a noob to this site and android in general , ive learnt a lot from my galaxy s2 .
now i got the s3 , ive rooted it .. however i tried to upgrade to 4.1 awhile back . kept getting error .
anyways i want to upgrade to jellybean im sick of waiting like everyone else.
cm10 seems like a good rom , ive read a lot on this forum, could some one tell me what the first step is do i flash cwm first on the rogers stock or do i have to put ATT stock on it

Just make sure you download the latest CWM from here (6.0.1.2 currently): http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-d2att.img
And flash it to your device.
Then follow those steps, wipe/format data partition, as it says there. CAREFUL make sure you download the latest CyanogenMod version from here too, the top one on the list is always newest, latest version came out today actually: http://get.cm/?device=d2att
Let me know how it goes and if you're enjoying it! Tried leaked version of JB on my S3 with Telus in Canada and didn't like the bugs in there...so let me know if the 'CM Finishing Touch' on there is really better than stock!

Yup! Start off with CWM Recovery flash, when that's done, transfer file to device (internal sd card) and from the ROGERS stock rom you can do the apply update from zip option in CWM.

hey i downloaded all the files..
first i opened odin i couldn't find cwm in the pda. so i downloaded it again and added .tar at the end of the file name so it is now visible in pda odin
i flashed it succesfully however when i go to recovery mode it goes to android system recovery ?? not cwm recovery
iam i doing something wrong

Hmm...try ROM Manager free from the Play Store. If not just google around how to install CWM, installed it a while ago so I forgot sorry. But ROM Manager should work.

should i take off auto reboot then take out battery... i remember doing this when i rooted the phone . i think...
oh and for rom manager i cannot find my phone on the list , there isn't any galaxy s3 on it weird?

If you get the SGS3 All-in-one toolkit from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488 , you can install CWM from it just make sure you have drivers installed, it can help you with that if you don't have them, and enable USB Debugging.
If that doesn't work, which I think it should, try to use this link a bit. Download the version they have it should be pretty recent.

Oh so now you have CWM? Well as long as you have it, you'll only need it once or twice to erase all data, then install CM and GApps.

Ill try it with the cwm from the superuser one but I remember doing that it said error 9 or something

Quick question, I flashed CWM recovery using the terminal, and I see it when I boot into recovery, but when I go to ROM Manager to flash CM10, it says to flash CWM Recovery, and won't let me access the list. I would've flashed CWM from ROM Manager, but the S3 wasn't on the list of devices. Is there anyway to get around this?

Hi there!
Basically you must first but the CWM ZIP file on your internal sdcard then boot into CWM, from there go to install zip file or something like that, then select from SD Card, find the zip, you're done!
Don't forget to do a factory reset through CWM before the CM10 update and maybe after too.

I backed up my phone from recovery mode, does that mean I backed up my current ROM (stock rooted ROM)? And I backed up a few apps using Titanium Backup, if I use factory reset, would all my backups get erased? Thanks for your help!

Hi,
CWM = CWM Recovery; same thing just shorter .
The ZIP file for your rogers phone can be found here: http://get.cm/?device=d2att
Click the one at the top of the list as it is the newest.
Don't worry about the ROM because worst case scenario if you want to downgrade to stock, you can re-download it online and re-root.
For the apps, it depends where your backups are, usually, in TitBak, the backups are stored in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup which will be safe as formatting to factory settings and data partition in CWM doesn't format the internal or external SD Card. But I am not responsable if it does so be careful!

Also, I just got a notification to update SuperUser, which takes me to the Playstore, but on I remember seeing not to update SuperUser on the thread where I was told how to root my phone. So do I update it or not?

You can update it, I don't see what could go wrong because an update will only help fix things if there were bugs you had.

But say afterwords, I want to unroot and remove the 'Modified' status of my phone, and return back to the stock ROM like nothing happened, and remove the flash counter. How would I do that?

That would be with Odin you would redownload the Stock ROM for Rogers and then flash it. To reset counter, you can download the app TriangleAway for free from the Play Store and with root, it resets the counter. Then you can unroot.

[Q] HOW-TO? Clean ENTIRE phone, Manual or Superwipe?

IDK if this is ever an issue for new users but When I search I never find the exact thing I wish to know but much close to it.
In all My 16GB phone as of yesterday with no media or installed apps my phone had only 1 GB free and the filesystem was full of folders from old apps. I had installed and uninstalled many apps and flashed many roms, Which I believe left many leftover files. So I was told to format the System Partition and either restore or install a new rom. Since my latest nandroid was ICS based I decided to start fresh (also to clear up as much space I could.
My question now is, I still have many extra files from uninstalled apps. My phone now has 6.8GB of the available 11.8GB according to Windows 7.
So to completely START CLEAN what is the best method? (I will have a nandorid backup and a rom to install both on my pc and on my External SD Card)
Using CWMR,
Format System, Then Format SdCard? Then the Steps Required to install The Specific ROM you will now install.
Is the SdCard partition the usable space? If it is then the System Partition Contains all System Files and leftovers from flashing Roms and Kernels? If that is correct then Is the SdCard Partition basically the Users Space for apps and Media and what Shows up on the PC and The user Directory once Rooted?
Is this The Best way to do it? I have Seen Superwipe although have not found a page specifically about it. I have found versions of the script for many devices. Since their seems to be one available for the Samsung GS3 should i just flash that (I see it on the page for installation of the Xquizit Rom) and on an older post for another device said that it would "wipe /boot /data /system /cache and /devlog" then it says your phone is ready to install the rom (on the page i forget the rom or device it was for).
So to Clean my phone to the point that it is as close to possible as being new and this is the first rom to be installed and the first apps to be installed, when i install apps.
To accomplish this Should I? Use CWMR and manually format the system and the sd card partitions? or use the Superwipe script from the Xquizit Rom page?
Lastly but Most Importantly to use Superwipe do I simply just flash the zip? Also if i do it manually Have i described the correct way to do it?
Last of all Thank you and Sorry Its I just have never done this and as i still haven't even paid off my phone I don't want to Brick this phone at ALL.

Since this post has no reply's but some views that means i either asked a question that either A. has been asked and answered and i have not found it. or B. This is something that is so easy its never really been an issue.
If its A. Could someone be kind and just link to a post, or post the correct search term as I have been unable to find it.
If its B. Then to close this will I have a problem formatting the SD-card the same way I formatted the system partition
Also is their a Superwipe how to? and does it do what i think it does (basically format your hole phone in one easy step by running a script via your recovery mod?
I just don't want to brick this phone when it comes to formatting it just scares me for the first time.

Use the Odin software for a clean install. It wipes partitions, radio's everything. You can choose to intall a rooted Tmo update with Odin so that way you are ready to go. Just flash CWM with Rom manager after using Odin and you are ready to flash any rom you want.

Will Odin even replace custom recovery and radio with the stock recovery and radio? Or must that be done manually?

Yes ODIN will replace everything. I suggest using the pre-rooted route66 file for ODIN in Doc's thread I referenced above. It saves a step.

Yes. Odin will replace everything. You would have a phone just as if you bought it brand new @ a store.

Wow good to know so returning to bone factory stock is as simple as running triangle away if necessary and then using Odin to flash stock firmware. Amazing!

Issue flashing new roms

Hey I've been rooted for about 5 months now but never really got into it deeply. I'm in need of some help, could be easy but I'm stumped. Basically I was running a custom rom which was an AOKP JB rom released back in early September. It flashed no problem and what not, and has worked flawlessly up until today when I tried to flash to a new AOKP JB rom released.
I had done nandroid backups prior to attempting. So I downloaded the rom via AOKP OTA updates and then put it on my external sd card, and updated my cwm recovery to the most recent version. I then proceeded to cwm recovery and wiped data/factory reset, wiped the cache, and wiped the dalvik cache. I believe the first time around I forgot to format system and proceeded straight to flash the rom via external sd card, but it kept saying error can't external sd card every time attempting to flash the rom. I then tried to do it from internal sd card because it was located in AOKP OTA folder and it started flashing the rom but then an error occured very early on. Now since I have restored from my nandroid backup I'm now unable to access my external sd card, my phone just won't locate it.
Basically I need help figuring out what happened and how I can get my phone to recognize my micro sd card and how to properly go about flashing this rom.
Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.
If it helps I'm with Rogers. Also is it alright that I went back to a stock rom, can I update the stock rom too without any issues?

Yes I'm back to stock, which was from a nandroid backup. Running 4.0.4 tried doing software update but it failed. Am I going to have to go through odin and flash stock rom to unroot and then root again? Cause my micro sd is going insane keeps getting a errors....

No I haven't tried it, you think it would make a difference? I have just got the new cwm prior to these issues.

I would be sure to have a good, clean download of the ROM you want to install on your internal SD as well as a NANDROID somewhere for worst case. Then, install TWRP through the GooManager app from the play store. Once in the app, hit the menu button and select to install a custom recovery script. That should install the newest TWRP in place of CWM.
From there, enter recovery mode. It would be recommended to go the wipe menu and choose factory reset and then dalvik. FInally, install your ROM .zip and GAPPS. Hopefully that should work and install the ROM of your choosing.
If that is without success, flashing back to Stock via Odin may be your best choice.

I personally have never flashed a custom ROM from anywhere other than my internal SD. I actually had root with numerous custom ROMs without ever using an external SD.

Alright so hopefully this sorts out my external sd card then.

So I (like an idiot), tried installing the MB1 update without doing a backup first and now my phone is stuck in a boot loop. It gets to the Samsung logo after the sprint animation. I've tried wiping data and the dalvik cache as well as fixing permissions. At this point I think my only option remaining is to reflash everything in odin. Where can I find up the lastest files in the format for odin or does anyone else have any better ideas?

It sounds like you have a custom recovery... is it TWRP or CWM? If it is one of these, what version are you running?
Back to the solution to your problem... If you just want the stock MB1 Rom (rooted), head over to Freeza's thread and download his Rom. It really does wonders. Since you can't turn your phone on, you'll have to download it to your computer and transfer it over to your phone. Here's how you do it:
Boot into recovery, connect to comp with USB cable.
In TWRP, choose "Advanced" Mount and Mount USB. (CWM should be somewhat similar)
Copy the ROM zip over to your phone.
Wipe system, then cache/dalvik.
Flash ROM
Reboot
You will have to go through the phone setup from scratch (no backup), but it's better than a paperweight. Hope this works for you.
Edit: Also, I promised CNexus that I'd link to his OTA sticky thread, where he has done a really good job of summarizing the various steps you can take when you get an OTA update notification

Sorry should have mentioned I have TWRP 2.4.4.0 installed and I was actually running the update from the thread you mentioned. (Coming from mostly stock, just using the KT747 kernel). I flashed the Odex update zip and then the modem update zip. I was going to try flashing the full rom, but I can't find the mount USB option. (I just checked again at your advice but it's not there for some reason)

You couldn't find it because I gave you bad directions. Oops, my bad. The option to Mount USB Storage is in the Mount menu, not the Advanced Menu. I'll edit my original post. I'm currently running TWRP v2.4.1.0, but it shouldn't have been removed.

I updated to TWRP 2.4.4.0 to see what's going on. You're right, it's gone. This kind of sucks, since I always held that in my back pocket when flashing Roms. Nothing in their changelog says that they removed the option. Well, you can still copy files using adb, but that's a hassle. Do you have a micro-sd card adapter for your SD card so you can at least copy from your computer for that?

I don't even have a microSD card. I've been flashing from the phone. Using adb is a good idea though. It shouldn't be that hard if I'm moving just one file.

I would double check the md5sum before moving, just in case you had a bad download.

Naddict has a good list of recoveries that are flashable from the recovery itself. Here's a link to the thread. If you do eventually decide to go back to TWRP for your Recovery, I'd recommend using the 2.4.1.0 version, as I have confirmed that it does have USB storage.

Well I realized it too late, but I could have used the adb sideload flashing (like the stock recovery). The inclusion of that is probably why they removed the USB storage option.

Installing CM 10.1 help

Hey guys, so I'm deciding to try to put CM 10.1 stable onto my AT&T galaxy s3 obviously. I'm rooted and the superuser file is on my phone sd. Am I suppose to put CM 10.1 and the gapps onto the phone SD as well or am I suppose to put all of them onto my ex.SD card (p.s. It's only a 2gb :/ )? Also, should I try using goomanager or ROM manager or should I just put the files onto my SD and go into recovery and do it that way then? Sorry for the noob questions again, I'm just really knew to all of this stuff

It's always good to put them on your external SD that way if you wipe your internal by accident you'll still have your ROM and hopefully your backup to gall back on.
If you don't have clockwork mod recovery or twrp installed yet you'll need to take care of that first. Decide which recovery you want, download the appropriate program (goo manager for twrp or ROM manager for cwm)
It'll install your recovery.
Reboot into recovery and you'll want to back up your current setup in case you make a mistake. Than you'll wipe than flash your ROM and gapps and reboot and you're done.

If you don't have clockwork mod recovery or twrp installed yet you'll need to take care of that first. Decide which recovery you want, download the appropriate program (goo manager for twrp or ROM manager for cwm)
It'll install your recovery.
Reboot into recovery and you'll want to back up your current setup in case you make a mistake. Than you'll wipe than flash your ROM and gapps and reboot and you're done.

*Here's a real nooby one, how do I know if I have CWM or TWRP installed? I can get into recovery mode and it shows that Rom manager symbol up at the top.
*Should I move the SuperUser.zip file from my internal SD to my external sd and would I have to re-root if I did that?
*Hopefully the last question I have , and should my 2gb ex. SD card be big enough for all of the files and the back ups?

Ok so let's answer the last question first. 2gb is fairly small for anything other than 1 backup (depending on what you are backing up) and a ROM and Gapps. I have a 2gb sd that I keep my stock backup and a couple recovery files on for an emergency and a 32gb in my phone for everyday use.
I'm a little concerned about the SuperUser.zip you have floating around, have you installed it yet?
How did you root? I'm curious to see what steps you take. Because once you root, you than flash custom recovery and install SuperUser.zip IN your recovery. So either you already have recovery installed or you aren't 100% rooted yet.
Once SuperUser.zip is installed you can delete the zip, if you want to. It's merely an install file.
Go to your apps, do you see an app labelled SuperUser or SuperSU?

Ok I re read that again and noticed you mentioned that you got into recovery and you can see the logo for Clockwork Mod.
That's great. If you haven't already installed SuperUser.zip you'll want to do that. Also download ROM Manager if you haven't and make sure your recovery is up to date. The latest CWM is 6.0.3.1 you'll see the build number while you're in recovery.
Once that is all done, in recovery you'll want to make a backup.
After that you'll need to preform a full wipe and than you can flash the ROM and Gapps.

Yeah I have SuperSU installed and it grants me root access for like titanium back up and triangle away and that stuff.
Here's the steps that I used to root:
*Plugged my phone into my computer and copied the SuperSU.zip onto my internal SD
*Unplugged my phone and turned it off and booted it into download mode.
*Then I pressed Vol. Up to continue and then I plugged my phone back in and opened odin.
*I clicked the PDA button and chose the .tar file that I downloaded. (The whole thing that I downloaded was called RecoveryGalaxyS3USCanada)
*I then clicked start and waited till it said passed.
*It passed and then I took out my battery so it would be off and then put it into recovery mode I think. (Vol. up + home + power)
*Then it booted into a menu and I clicked install from SD card and then install zip from internal SD card and then I chose the SuperSU.zip and clicked yes and then it loaded and all that and then I chose to reboot it. It rebooted and then I had the SuperSU app and then I downloaded Titanium backup to make sure I was fully rooted and it loaded and backed it up.
That is all the steps that I did to root my s3. It was a video that I found on galaxys3root.com

I'm on AT&T but it worked for AT&T and I think most of the Canadian carriers as well.?

No I was wondering because if you were on a Canadian carrier we would have extra steps.
Download ROM manager and make sure that your recovery is up to date it should be 6.0.3.1
Once its up to date you're ready to backup and flash.

I tried to use Rom manager a few days ago and I downloaded cm 10.1 rc5 and the gapps for it and I followed all of the steps from a video I think I found on here somewhere and it was working and all that and then it rebooted and it had the cyanogenmod logo thing loading and then about 1.5-2 minutes later, it said something like, "Setup Wizard has stopped working" and something else like "apps.google" has stopped working. I rebooted my phone after that and it was the same thing again. Have any idea why that happened?

Either one looks fine.
Did you flash the ROM with ROM manager?
That and goo manager are no good for flashing anything other than recoveries.

Rom manager causes a LOT of issues when flashing with it. Same with Goo Manager. Some people have had their devices bricked because of thos programs. They are good for just updating your recovery.
Making a nandroid will allow you to try out new ROMs while still keeping a safe backup in the event you experience issues during or after the OS installation. Be sure your device is fully charged before proceeding onto the backup and flashing procedures.
These are the steps you need to backup/wipe/flash manually.
It will become second nature to you quite quickly.
This is from xBeerdroidx's guide I sent you.
Backup all your pictures and music to your computer before doing any of this so you don't lose it.
1. Power off your device.
2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
3. Release the power button when the device vibrates and you see the blue script in the top left corner
4. You are now in custom recovery.
5. In CWM go to Backup and Restore and select Backup.
6. After backup is finished, select reboot system now or stay in recovery to continue with this guide.
*NOTE: Be sure to save a copy of this backup to your computer and/or micro sd card. Having a recent backup saved to your computer and micro SD card can be useful if something happens to your phones internal memory.
1. If you are not already in recovery, boot in now (Vol Up + Home + Power. Release the power button at vibrate and when you see the blue script in the top left corner).
In CWM:
2. Select Wipe data/factory reset
3. Select Wipe Cache
4. Select Advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Select Mounts and Storage and format /system
6. If you are transitioning from 4.1 to 4.2 or 4.2 to 4.1, you must also format /data. You will lose all personal data so back it up first.
7. From the main recovery screen:
>>CWM - Choose the "install .zip from SD Card" or "install .zip from external SD card" option (depending on where you placed the files) then navigate to the ROM file, select it and confirm.
8. If you need to flash gapps, repeat step 5 and select the gapps package.
9. Reboot system. It will take several minutes to load so be patient and don't worry. Once the phone is booted, let it sit for 5 minutes, reboot and enjoy!
