I've had my Desire since it came out but a problem has just come up: the phone will shut down whenever the SIM card is inserted. Without it it'll work fine, but if i put it in, when it boots, as soon as it tries to connect to the network it'll shut down. I've tried a different SIM card and the problem is the same.
This started by using MIUI but i've clean installed a CM7 based rom and the problem is still there.
My phone is out of warranty so taking it in is not worth it.
Thanks
Did you try to flash a new radio.img?
No i havn't, i, rather stupidly, hadn't thought of that..... i guess i thought that when i flashed a new rom i'd get a new radio!
When you run RUU you get a new radio, but ordinary custom roms don't have that option.
I flashed the latest radio and the problem remains the same.........:crying:
Any other ideas?!
Then it's probably a hardware issue. You can try to disassemble it and try to fix connectors.
I'm now completly los now; the phone switches off with 3 different sim cards but not witha forth!!! I'll have the SIM card replaced even though it does work fine in my HTC ChaChaCha........
Very strange!
Thanks for your help anyway, it's obviously got to do with the card and not the phone so i guess the solutions been found!!
I have had the same problem, until yesterday. I'm running a cooked ICS ROM, and the issue has gone as soon as I have switched to a newer RIL. So don't take it for granted that it's a hardware issue or SIM-related. Hope this helps.

help us
My help
you just have to activate the pin code on security and location setting
but the SIM card must be inserted to activate the pin code
If you never activate the pin code, then the default code is usually 0000
if the phone is turned off before you have to get to the temp setting reply me and i'll tell u what to do
If it worked for u don't forget to hit thanks

Maybe bad connection on your sim card?
Try removing the SIM card and put it back in, and then boot the phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
done that, doesn't help
Im getting hte same issue. The 4.0.2 update came through, rebooted the phone. SIM not found, press to reboot....
Rebooted, SIM still not working. remove SIM and replace. Still not working. replaced with another SIM. Still not working.
Was working fine prior to the 4.0.2 update. This is on a 1 month old phone that has never been rooted. It is still as stock as it comes out of the box... And i want to test it more before i start boxing it up to send it back...
Have you tried leaving the battery out for a bit, then trying powering it up again?
Here is where it gets weird. I tried 2 other sim cards as well as my own. none of them worked. put my sim card back in and tried again, still not working. turned it off over night. went to Vodafone and asked if i could try a new SIM in the phone. still not working. put my TPG/Optus sim in and it started working. got a new SIM from Voda, transfered all the account info to the new card, waited an hour and tried it again and now it works :/
Dont know what caused it to stop working and dont know what caused it to start working again :/ im going to throw the word "Vodafone" in there as the cause because people will just nod their head and say... "yep, that was probably it..."
I have the same issue with AT&T....the phone does recognize the SIM, APN and all...but no signal. Just once in a while it gets registered on teh network, but for one minute or so...I don't know what to do
Same issue here, after a reboot my phone does not recognize my sim at all. no signal at all. tried a different sim, nothing, bought a new sim but nothing again, returned to stock, everything, but still nothing....no remedy yet....
I flashed in JB AOKP was working fine all of last night. I also entered my SIM Pin or unlock code. The first time I put in an 8 digit unlock code I have. Second time it prompted me I skipped it. I'm pretty sure it was the security pin and not the network unlock. I don't have any other phone's micro SIM I can insert into my phone and a local phone store's T Mobile SIM produced no different of a result except for replacing AT&T with T-Mobile (I have not however put my microSIM into another phone...because I don't have another micro sim phone). Reboot phone this morning and it's no longer working. Tried to enable 2g. Nothing. Tried a battery pull with the phone on, pulling the SIM (same message with SIM pulled out),
Wifi works
This sucks big time ;(
Note: I am pretty sure I did not network lock the phone or anything because the SIM prompt that came up when I flashed JB did not ask me for my unlock or network code (I would have known). The first time I entered that code was 'just in case it's asking me to unlock" but why would it ask me a second time then? So I doubt it was prompting me for a network unlock code. The prompt from youtube videos was different too.
Also APN is empty, but I think that's becasue I'm not connected to any network
Pressing Available networks brings up AT&T AT&T AT&T T-Mobile T-Mobile "311660" pressing any of them you get a quick window connect "too fast" goes back to/stays in available networks screen and says "Can't connect to this network right now. Try again later."
So I added the AOKP and Corresponding kernel yesterday and I mean it was working fine with 4g... apparently this thread says that you need to flash a new radio in some cases when you change kernels?

...what are you talking about. My IMEI isn't mentioned once in that post. In fact now that you mention it, since people's IMEI changed...nothing like that my phone still has its IMEI
I also did not get a "phone frozen" from entering the wrong code too many times...so I doubt its locked like that. There was a random reboot that I WOKE UP to, but nothing weird...it rebooted randomly but worked finely after that

I was proposing the theory that you may have lost your IMEI, since the symptoms you report were very similar to what I was experiencing when I lost mine, however since you still have yours, must be something else, eh?

Well, mine was definitely due to a lost imei that happened sometime when flashing.
I did get the network unlock warning thingy twice, and then had no cellular connectivity, which is why I mentioned the lost imei. I restored my nandroid back to stock, then used the method here with a little driver tapdancing to reinject my imei, and that solved my issues, but sounds like you have something else going on.

If I flash back to stock and no longer have the stock kernel, what is the steps for flashing back then?
1. flash stock kernel
2 fix partitions
3. factory rest/cache/davlik
reboot into oden and flash new image?
Long story short, Don't cut your own microsd..the sim pins on this phone are VERY sensitive and hard to fix/see. Don't bend em.
I am having the same problems right now, I keep on getting " NO SERVICE" - SELECTED NETWORK UNAVAILABLE" Error.
Rebooting doesnt help, flashing modem through CWM doesnt help. I know for a fact that the simcard it good because other apps that I install can read the sim with no problem, and my WIFI is working like a charm.
Someone got a solution for this? This is already like 4 days ongoing, please any help will be appreciated !!
Im having the same no service selected network issue. I can search and find att and the mobile but when I try to have it connect to att that's the error I get. I have an att SIM card in the phone. Sph l720 SIM unlocked, it didn't ask me for an unlock code or anything like that but I also don't get the invalid SIM card error. I've added the main apn from the att website but that doesn't help and the phone is current set to gsm/umts. If anyone has a fix please let me know, thank you.
So I saw a new CM12 build and as usual I downloaded it and flashed it. Sometimes while setting up the device, data is turned on automatically so to save a few bucks I removed the sim card while the device was on and after that the sim card is just not being detected.
The sim card is fine as I've checked it in other device. I tried another sim card on my maguro and it won't even read that. Is there anything I can do or am I f**ked up?
Need help.
Seems it was not a hardware issue as it started working on its own now. Quite happy as it is still my primary device.
That hardware is wearing down...
Same Problem!

Same problem here. How does flashing a different ROM just stop the hardware from reaading a SIM card? Like turning off a light switch!

Well flashing different ROMs didn't help. I just inserted my SIM card after a month or two and it was easily detected. Don't know what the issue was.
Not even 24 hours after writing this post, my Galaxy Nexus got stuck in the same issue. What a f***ing coincidence.
The issue still persists on my maguro, not sure if it's an hardware or software issue. It shows the IMEI correctly as displayed on the back of my device.
I tried collecting radio log using adb logcat -b radio > log.txt and have attached the same. Can someone please have a look and tell me if it's solvable or not.

Hi there guys,
As it turns out I was this morning at class, when all of a sudden my phone gave a signal of "No service", so the data internet wouldn't work. I didn't pay too much heed to it until I got back home and my phone wasn't working yet. It happens to be my phone, it's deconfigured. It won't recognize any SIM card.
I tried resetting it, upgrading its firmware... but nothing changed. I've thought of installing a custom ROM... I might screw my phone up even more, tho. I don't have any other alternative
Right now I'm trying a higher version... B708 (Mine was B512)
All suggestions are welcome... thank you.
hi check your imei num. and baseband....i have same issue....imei null.......
Hello guys I've had this phone for a week. Now since it is a hand me down phone i cannot give you guys much details.
The phone is still unrooted, meaning to say there is no custom rom flashed here. When i got this phone it had some few issues like when you boot it up, apps will start giving you popup notice so I fixed it by factory reset and the next issue I've noticed was the systemui crashing but it turned out that the google app is the problem.
I've tried using different sim cards that are apprently working but there's still no luck. The owner that gave it to me said that everything here was fine.
I had to change the batteries since it's bloated. The sd card seems to be working fine. The only problem is the sim card reader. Not sure it it's a firmware or a hardware problem. I need advices. Thank you in advance.
