I have been using the FB-15 radio and seem to be getting lower performance when it comes to signal strength. I see the FB-21 and FB-27 being flashed on the epic touch. Can I use that one on the epic? Has anyone found a modem that seems to consistently out perform the FB-15?
Using a modem from another device requires a bit of modification to the kernel and other parts of the system... xboxfanj has a patch to use the Nexus 4G's modem on any CM7-based rom, and I can vouch for it. You won't see a stronger signal, but you will find that the Nexus modem performs far better than Epic modems at any signal strength
The only caveat is that you must use Odin (or Heimdall) to install the Nexus modem or to go back to Epic modems
But the Touch modems, like the Epic modems, are made by Samsung, and therefore probably not an improvement (the Nexus modem is made by Google, by the way). If you are using a rom that is not CM7-based, or don't want to mess with Odin to install the Nexus modem, then many people seem to prefer the EC05 modem.

ok, now you have my attention. I am using CM9. would that be compatible then to using the nexus radio with the patch? If so, where can I find these items you speak of.

That patch is only for CM7-based roms, as I mentioned, but if we don't pester xboxfanj about it too much, I'm sure he can get around to whipping up a patch for CM9
He has a lot of projects that he is working on, and school is starting up again, so I don't know if even he can give a guess about how long that would take... I keep saying I want to get my build environment set up to start learning - maybe I'll start with CM9 and this mod... but I said that about the CM7 version, and just never got to it, so no promises

so perhaps then it would be best to just stay with FB15 for now until I upgrade to the S3. I was hoping to find a more efficient modem that was more sensitive to the sprint signal and give me a stronger signal. I see you have the same phone. Is it Sprint? Which modem are you using?

Don't try the epic touch modems. The hardware isn't the same and the ril is different. Fc09 and the nexus modem should be the best. As far as cm9 with the nexus modem, I will work on that when I get time. Had to delete the cm9 sources to make room for cm7 and cm10, so I will have to resync.

I am on Sprint... no offense, but the answers to the rest of your questions should be fairly obvious from my previous responses in this thread - I even mentioned the best native Epic modem, in case you don't want to mess with Odin and/or switch to a CM7-based rom (and FB15 is not the one).
EDIT: FC09? Whoops, I'd said EC05... listen to xboxfanj, he's becoming our local modem guru, lol

Hmm EC05 may be good too. Try all three. Those 3 should be the best. It depends on your device and your area.

OK, well i am going to experiment with your advice and see if there is any improvement with the modems. I flashed from FB15, back to EC05, then to fc09. I am running fc09 currently. I tried multiple times to also flash EI22 but could not get it to take. I wanted to try this because i saw qbbkin mentioned that he felt he was getting better performance from EI22.
Trust me when I say, I know how it is to flash a number of modems trying to get one with a decent signal. Its easy to just go modem-crazy and flash and flash and drive yourself nuts! Im currently on FC09 but I was on EC05 for a long while and I have had the most decent reception on FC09, it seems the be most consistent at least. Yup, your right, all areas are different. Although, I've read a sh*t ton about modems and which one works best, its by far the FC09. So, justt consider it. xboxfanj is the man, take his advice :good:
I would say either EC05 or FC09 as the "best" modem for the Epic
If you are using a 2.3 build (GB), I would say use EC05, if you are using an 4.x build (ICS/JB) I would recommend FC09
IMO, unless you get superb results with EC05, FC09 is the modem of choice.
Each phone is unique and therefore reacts differently to each modem. Try from EC05 through FC09 and see which modem works best for you. I happen to get the best signal and battery life using the EI22 modem.
well, FC09 seems to be giving me a fairly consistent signal for sprint. How did you install ei22, do you have to put it on your sdcard and flash it from there? i could not get it to odin.

EI22 is only available through a CWM flashable delta file. You must Odin the EC05 modem, then in CWM flash the delta file.
---------- Post added at 08:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 AM ----------
If you're on any MTD rom, then you must boot into CWM and flash the temp BML CWM.zip. That will allow you to then flash the modem delta. If you're still on BML, then you can simply flash like normal.
Nexus S 4G Modems Now. YMMV. But Epic Modems are in the past for me.

Sprint announcement is here.
If I do this update, would it effect my ability to root in the future?
Highly unlikely. However, if you want to be completely safe, root and install a rom with EL29 and also update your modem.

I put the file you posted in /system/apps and used TB to freeze system updates, as well as a cache and dalvik wipe with reboot. Am I all set so the update won't install and screw up Calk's rom for me? And get rid of the notifications?
What if your a stock root and want the update? Should I unroot then update and then reroot?
I don't know if this will work so try at your own risk. I read about a recent ota for the epic 4g that the notifications were getting on some people's nerves. Someone brought up the idea and a few people said it worked.
If you are on a custom rom and the ota nag screen pops up, let it update. It will fail and I'm guessing it will try to flash but give you an exclamation mark when trying to update. When you get the mark, pull the battery them put it back in. They are saying in that post that the nag screen will stop appearing after that. I haven't tried it yet because I don't need to. If you do decide to do it, I think it would be a good idea to nandroid before everything and have all the files you need to flash it back to where you want it if something goes wrong. I don't know for sure but I don't think it will brick a phone.
Somebody was asking about cal's 2.8.1. I have the trexcell 3800 battery in the phone now. I did properly break in and condition the battery when I first got it. Here is a screen shot. I went off the charger at 8am and have not been plugged in at all during the day. I used the phone quite a bit too.

Depends on what your taste and personal preferences are. All the ROMs found here are at least as good as the stock ROM.....most are better. For a really awesome appearance and stability with speed and increased battery life I'd recommend Strongsteve's odex blue ROM.
I figured I would ask here instead of making my own thread. Would it be best to download an OTA on a brand new phone and then doing all this rooting and flashing and ROMing? I'm asking because I don't have the phone yet but I'll be doing all this cool stuff as soon as i get it.
A lot of members that went from calk's ROM to the blazer ROM are showing battery improvements, one member even said his tripled. I'm currently using it and couldn't be happier!

As detailed here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140645 ), I got a "Galaxy SII" from Boost Mobile back in Feburary. Apparently I'm in the right forum for this device. The stock rom on this thing has a lot of issues, so I wanted to replace it with a good Cyanogenmod build. It hasn't been rooted or otherwise tampered with yet, and I have the latest OTA update. What's the safest way to put cyanogenmod on here?

just like a sprint one... root it from this guide and then follow this guide to get 10.1 or atleast a version of it... there are no official cyanogenmod builds for this phone.
Double check your model number before you flash anything, if you don't have an Epic Touch you may bork your phone.
By the way there's nothing safe about cyanogenmod, just follow the threads and read the posts, especially the ones that start with "help".

Success! I got Cyanogenmod running on this thing! Thanks everyone!
It's a bit bloated tho; I'll have to search around for some leaner roms. Are there any optimized for battery life like ther were for the EVO 4g?
any time man
I would like to start off by saying that this is for 4.2.2 bootloader only! If you see a KNOX counter in your bootloader, that means you have a 4.3+ bootloader!
If you want to flash the 4.3 modem, please follow my other guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612
I have updated the modem package with the official Samsung modem.
This process can be done on any firmware.
Alright folks, back again w/ a tutorial on how to flash the 4.4.2 modem on your T-Mo S4!
*Please make sure your phone is in download mode before starting this procedure.
1. Download my 4.4.2 modem package here: http://goo.gl/09W6fR
2. Unpack the rar file to anywhere on your computer, as long as you can access it.
3. Open up the included Odin and uncheck auto reboot.
4. Click on phone, select the modem.bin, and press start.
5. When you finish the flash, manually reboot your phone back to download mode and flash the modem.bin one more time.
6. When the flash is complete, reboot and you're finished!
It should look like this after the flash:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
If anyone has issues w/ their GPS after flashing, try downloading the Google Specific No-SSL build from http://goo.gl/ha1KC0 and flash it.

This can also be flashed if you are running a non-stock kitkat rom with the MK2 bootloader and want to try your luck with the new kitkat modem (gsm). Unless I'm missing something. Why do you call it "patched" modem? did you do something to the modem.bin? I could swear it was only necessary to pull the modem.bin of the kitkat release and flash it, without flashing the non-hlos.

Patched as in I manually took the modem files and updated them using the patches in the OTA. So, these ARE the official modem files.
Is there any suggested way to flash this from the phone directly?
Is the modem partition of the tmobile variant in /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 ?
We could take rockratt's at&t flashable modem zips, substitute the modem.bin with our own for tmo, then edit the partition where the modem is in the updater-script and we'd have flashable zips. No?

Thank you so much. So it is confirmed that Samsung did the same thing with the latest (4.4.2) as they also did with the 4.3? Going forward, this will be a necessary flash to allow for the coexistence of the "Knox-free MDL boot loader" and any future "Stock TMo TW 4.4.2 ROMS" ? Yeah Samsung did the same thing with this modem. I don't think it's necessary at all to use a 4.4.2 modem on a 4.4.2 TW ROM. I mean, I used a i9505 4.4.2 ROM with a 4.3 modem and it worked fine. But I would do it just to keep myself updated.

NDC Modem issue
I flashed the custom ROM (using PhilZ) from the OP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2775383)
I also flashed the modem as posted there as well. After rebooting, I get unkown software version and unknown baseband version in "About Device" and no antenna connection at all!
How do I fix this?
thanks

Did you flash the tar first? And did you wipe cache and dalvik in custom recovery? Also, reboot, let the rom settle, then reboot into cwm, wipe again, and try flashing modem. Lastly, make sure the md5 matches and you don't have a bad download. Good luck.

I ended up flashing back to stock and rooting with PhilZ...
Only problem now is I can install apps, but nothing else can download and make changes to storage...not even a ringtone or pic from the web...
Any ideas there??

Stock KitKat made changes to storage permissions and behavior.
You can look for a KitKat SD Fix in the Play store, try a permissive kernel like @CNexus' permissive version of the stock kernel, or manually editing whatever it is that the play store SD Fix app edits, or use a custom ROM.
Recovery FLASHABLE version now posted near the bottom of the first post of the 3Minit Battery Mod for Conquest-Singularity and both Stock ND8 and NDC with 1000+ animated battery icons..

Possible to get VM GS3 to work with Sprint (or MNVOs like Ting)?
I see in the Ting forums that we can buy a Boost Mobile Moto G (3G, not 4G LTE) and somehow it just lets us sign up with Ting using the phone ID... the same process I used with a used when I signed up with a clean used Sprint GS3. Do you think it's possible to grab the Virgin Mobile GS3s that are on sale (new for $80 @ Best Buy) and do the same?
Or does that work with the Moto G because something was just overlooked for that model? I've read that the phones locked to the Sprint subsidiaries like BM & VM aren't eligible for the BYOP deals with other, separate MNVOs. And it's said that Sprint keeps a database of phone IDs that are made for their system, but keep the BM, VM, etc IDs separate so they aren't supposed to work with any other Sprint-based providers.
It seems they can also use a Ting donor phone's info (I assume it's info is already in the Sprint database) and apply it to some other phone model and then it's ok with Sprint for us to sign up with it under their MNVO BYOP plans. I think the example they had was for a 3G HTC EVO. Would that work for the GS3? Would it take additional effort to get the LTE working too?
Do you guys know if we can get GS3s marked for BM/VM working with any of the other Sprint network providers? Any guesses & knowledge also welcomed.

Just want to say thanks

Can I flash this rom with the NJ3 modem?
Com.android.phone error and restart
I have tried jdsingle76 stock rooted roms. After a few system updates, I get a com.android.phone error followed by uncontrollable restarts. Does anyone know cause and fix? Thank you in advance.

I know that when the KK builds first came out, lower modems wouldn't work with this build. But I'm not sure about going up. Try it, and worst case scenario, there's a tar to flash to get modem back, as well as a forum with just the modem . Good luck.

What build did you come from? Make sure you're coming from stock tar NDC as you may have conflicts coming from other builds. And check md5sum. Sounds like it may be a bad download as well. Good luck!

Thanks, jdsingle76. I found that restoring the backup of my data created the issue.
NDC Bootloader
which one of the links is the NDC Bootloader? im trying to get to NDC or ND8 since im on OA3 and want to flash custom roms
Does anyone have any info on downgrading from OH1? I've yet to see any info on it, though it is apparently the latest modem for this phone, and quite frankly, it blows. I tried dropping to the MD4, and lost my MEID and things. Thankfully I had a modem backup and it worked coming back, but man, I hate that I can't update my data profile on AICP and none of the Touchwiz roms list compatibility with this new modem.
I'm new to the Samsung scene and all this extra crap I couldn't do with other devices is confusing as hell at 1am and no sleep or coffee. I know OH1 is what was there after the Stagefright update, but it may have been there when I bought the phone. Ideas and suggestions would be awesome on getting back to stock or switching to TW without losing service programming.
Please keep in mind I don't have a PC but I do have Mobile ODIN and the latest TWRP.

Can't downgrade firmware, you can use any OD2 or OH1 Touchwiz ROM.

Except there aren't any that I can find. The latest ones all show something other than OD2 and OH1. I assume I'm stuck with AICP for just that reason, which is crap because I can't revert to a stock TouchWiz OD2 that doesn't seem to exist. I haven't got a PC on my truck so I can't use Kies to get it back to actual stock. I suppose I'm screwed then.
Edit: I've seen plenty of s4 and up OD2 and OH1 roms but nothing for the S3. I know it's old as hell but damn, it's still a fairly solid phone.

Oops, my bad... I thought this was the S4 forum (the latest update is also OH1)... You need to use an ND8 or NJ2 ROM. I have 2 of them for the S3 in the Android Development section.
Same situation kind of...
I too had done the ota update to oh1 on my s3 and the modem turned to crap. I rerooted and installed wicked s5 xperience 2.2. used the flash directions except I used twrp no issues at all dirty flash and then clean flash. Modem works way better... I get signal in places I didn't have before.
i got the same problem

I returned my s3 to non-rooted stock NJ2 using Odin and it updated to OH1. I don't have service but want to activate it on RIngPlus. I am having this issue where the display flashes off and power button does not respond as it is supposed to. Wondering if a flash to a different rom will fix it. The problem is not new though. Even when drawing the pattern to unlock screen will go off.
