extremely frustrated rooting - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am extremely frustrated having followed a guide step by step several times with out any luck. I have a GSM phone purchased from Google and running 4.1.1. I am on a Mac. The step by step guide seems very nice and very easy to follow but yet I get stuck 3/4 of the way through. I tried wugs via a PC but a horror show with drivers.
The phone has been unlocked. The screen tells me that.
Is there a nice tutorial to hlep me through this? What I have learned through 3-4hrs is that for some reason "clock recovery" isn't getting installed.
Any help is super appreciated.
Sorry for the frustration. I am a nice guy lol just seems like I am so close but yet so far from rooting. :crying:
Thanks in advance

I can help you out through teamviewer. Its a remote desktop control meaning i will see what you see and can guide you through rooting. I'll even help you flash a new ROM if you would like. Let me know install teamviewer and PM me the ID and Password and ill help you figure things out.

Also, i am a little confused. some people are saying to put "roms" onto the phone. are the roms like the OS? how do i wipe the phone and put a new rom on?
i am looking to get 2.3 onto my phone and get free wifi hotspot tethering.
i am running windows 7 ult. 64.
also, any links where i can get apps that only rooted phones can get?
any help would be great. sorry for the noob questions
Root using Unrevoked. It is the easiest method by far. Once you have root and s-off, you can worry about flashing custom roms. I'm not sure what you mean by "simple root .1" so you may want to post a link to what you tried so we know where you stand.
Also, it'd be easier to help if you provide your phone info as far as which hardware version, what software is on it now, which hboot, etc. If this is all new to you, then read some more and get a better understanding of this before you mess up your phone.
Can you boot your phone normally or is it stuck somewhere?
Simple root it outdated, you can check out the following thread for info on how to root.

you have been told "what to do" show some pride, suck it up and read.
it is super simple.
if you do not understand then stop or you will be worse off.
just read you will be surprised how easy it is
I love it when someone is handed detailed instructions then asks for instructions again.

first of all i'm not a dude, second i did the guide of the rooting, i managed to do everything but there's a stage where the option doesn't appear in the recovery section. All i ask is for help. If you don't intend to help then don't bother replying.
Plug phone into USB, turn on debugging mode, run revolutionary, enjoy root.
Honestly, it's that simple. The people on here that are telling you that you "shouldn't bother rooting" if you have to ask this question are not saying that to be rude at all. It's a simple fact that rooting gives you privileges to sensitive system files that, if you dont know what you are doing and can't follow simple step by step instructions, can cause you to do extreme damage to your phone such as bricking. Again, it's a very simple process that you will be repeating very often while flashing various ROMs, kernels, and radios. If you aren't comfortable enough following the millions of step by step guides here on the forums then, for your phone's safety, you shouldn't be rooting. Keep reading the guides, scour the forum for the billion of other posts like yours, and then root AFTER you understand the ENTIRE process start to finish. I know you're eager to root your phone but such sensitive things should not be done without full understanding.
Again, nobody is trying to be rude to you at all. It's just that those of us more experienced in the subject know what can happen when inexperienced people try to blindly root, and subsequently flash, a bunch of stuff on their phone. Please try to take a step back and understand this.
Did you download the fastboot drivers and make sure HTC sync is not installed on your computer?

How to actually update DesireHD to 4.0

Sorry Folks, I'm new to this site/forum, I would like to upgrade my HTC Desire HD to the 4.0 update, which I read/watched is working well. My problem is I'm fairly handy with my phone and somewhat with computers. But I don't see/understand how to actually go about that. I thought I saw somewhere, that I am to factory reset my phone, I can handle that, but I guess what I don't understand, is how I actually get the update ONTO the phone. Do I just go this website and clink on a link from my phone and it will take over? If so, which one, I see links all over the place. Should I remove my memory card? I'm assuming this site is for really phone, computer savy people. I just want to try the update. Would be happy to donate to the site, once I get it going. Can someone please help me. Thanks for everyone's time of reading this. Sorry for my ignorance.
Cheers.

Before screwing your phone read this guide carefully Post #7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824379)
There are also lots of interesting stuff in there so read, read and read.
Hi, its a little more complicated than you suggest in your post.
First you will need to disable the security on your device (known as s-off) and flash a custom recovery.
You need to download the rom you wish to install and save it to your sd card. See here for a list of custom roms, there is a section for Android 4.0:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610483
Boot the phone into recovery, wipe you phone data and factory reset then install the rom.
You can use this to unlock the phone and flash clockworkmod recovery:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
Do loads of searching this forum and googling so you fully understand the process as there is a chance of bricking your phone if it goes wrong. If you do your homework, are methodical and computer savy as you mentioned you should be fine.
Good luck!
Thanks, But...think I'm screwed.
Thanks Guys for your help, but I think this is way beyond me. Its not that I'm lazy, but I can't see myself reading tons of posts and researching for days to do this. I'm having a hard time even finding relevant info that pertains to what I'm trying to do, links and stuff everywhere. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask for to have a step by step guide. You know what I mean ie: Step 1, Factory Reset, Step 2, download this file Step 3. Run it etc... Oh well, I will just suffer with this phone, and probably get stung getting out of my contract early and get a Samsung G3 or something. I had thought this was as easy as factory resetting my phone, downloading a thing or two and then just running it. Too bad there wasn't a store or place I could take this to, to get it done properly by people in the know. Would gladly pay to have this done.
Thanks.
Everything you need is in the link and guide glevitan gave you. But you do need to read. If you don't want to, the rooting and flashing isn't for you.

[Q] Custom Roms using a Mac - Help!!

Hi everyone.
I'm new to the forum and really need some help. I have a rooted Note 2 which I have been flashing roms on for some time now but recently upgraded my computer to an iMac. Now I have no idea how to do this on a Mac.
I have so far managed to download the file and convert it to a zip file but when i try and flash it on my phone it fails every time. I am obviously doing something wrong as I cant get it to work at all. My windows laptop is on its last legs so I wont be able to use that much longer.
What I am hoping for on here is that someone would be kind enough to give me a step by step guide on how to do this on a mac. I know I am asking a lot but I have heard so many good things about the people on this site that I thought I would give it a try as I am banging my head off a wall trying to figure out what to do once I have the file downloaded.
I am very new to using a Mac which is why I need step by step guidance. It's not a dodgy download or anything like that as I have tried numerous roms.
I thank everyone in advance for helping me with this.
Paul

Pretty much desperate for help.

I'm hoping there's someone out there who can guide me step-by-step through the rooting process, because something that should be pretty straightforward is turning out to be an absolute nightmare for me.
I've tried two different methods to root my phone, and I keep hitting roadblocks either way. I can't even unlock my bootloader! That's one of the first steps to rooting my phone, and I can't even get past that. In another method, one of the first steps is to boot into CWM and I can't even boot into that.
So, if anyone out there is willing to personally help me via PM or anything else, I'd greatly appreciate it.
