Speaker grill location - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone else hate the location of the speaker on this phone? It drives me nuts that they placed it on the bottom where the phone rests on it. You place your phone on a cushioned surface like a couch or bed for example, it muffles the sounds to the point you can barely hear them.
Hopefully the next nexus device places it on the bottom edge so that its exposed at all times.

It is terrible and not loud enough either
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Both of mine (maguro and toroplus) have been loud, both my Nexus S were really quiet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. Can't put the phone on a soft surface and still expect to hear anything.

Whats so hard about laying the phone face down, or on a book or something.
I agree the design choice wasn't the best, but it's not exactly deal breaking either.

Good point. But, then that begs the question as to why there's a LED notification. Its not seen if the phone is face down. Its a Samsung design as my SGS2 was the same design with the hump at the bottom and speaker grill located within.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

You can't even hear it to begin with on maximum volume. Doesn't matter where they've put it at that point.

Dual speakers towards the top of the device would fix this issue
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app

The speaker was place in that specific location because when your holding it your palm reflects the sound thus amplifying it. I think Google used this idea because they already know how the battery life in this phone sucks. They innovated ,less power used by the speaker but it is louader when your holding it.

The location of the speaker is pretty bad but the speaker in general is pretty crappy. The volme is no where near loud enough. I dont see how it made it into final production.

Because when you lay it on it's back on a cushion you can't hear it, thus making the light all the more useful =P
I dunno man, I just know that there's a lot of phones that have the speaker on the back, including many HTC's. Honestly the best speaker design I've ever seen is on the Xperia Play. Two side mounted speakers that use resonation chambers. Best sounding cell phone speakers I ever heard in my life.

EVO rear speaker

I am on my 3rd rear speaker. They blow so easy. Is there a replacement that will last longer than the factory?
I'm in the same boat. But from what I've seen there is no better speaker available. I've looked and looked.
Has any of your blown speakers had to do with running cm roms?
I dont know if its specifically cm roms or just roms that incorporate a gain adjustment, but cm always made my rear speaker crackle.
The first time I flashed cm, I noticed it. I didnt stick with the rom very much due to wanting 4g and gps, so I flashed to a sense rom and the crackling speaker went away, even with volume turned up 100% and playing a normally loud song (like silverstein or a day to remember) the speaker would handle it fine for as long as I played music.
Flashing back to cm7, the speaker crackled when the phone rang. Even at lower volume, it would crackle a little bit. I tried tuning the dsp settings and CM sound level settings, but still had the crackling. Now I've flashed back to a sense rom, and the speaker crackles, but not nearly as much, just when playing songs at full volume.
Dont know if this is what happened with you, but possibly a reason?
Mine was after I flashed my first Rom. Forgot which one it was but it was a sense Rom tho, not cm. I got to playing around with the dsp manager and guess I tweaked a little too much, lol.

I'm replacing mine every few months. I think my problem is that I'm getting little metal shavings in my speaker. I have a Fab shop so there is metal everywhere. Everytime it gets too distorted I throw a new speaker in and I'm good for a few months. I have never had this happen with any other phone I've owned they are just garbage speakers.

So does the tp2 loud speaker work? They hadn't really come to a conclusion in that thread.
Looking at some of the other speakers, the TP2, Droid, HTC Snap, and Evo all have the same speaker, unless they just use the same picture for the website.
I wonder if you could get the loud speaker from a Nextel phone to work..?
I think blackcircle was going to give it a try. Hopefully he will report back as I'd like to know also.

That is the exact problem, I see it every day. The metal filings disrupt the polarization of the speaker, causing it to crackle.

I second that. My 2 brothers and myself all got the evo the same day. I'm on my third speaker and they have never changed it. Every time I change it there is metal stuck to it.
Its either causing problems with the magnet or its the foil of the speaker getting damaged. Permanent damage I do not know. I just replace the speaker its easier than trying to clean it. I just think its a crap speaker in general. my old tp2 had great audio clarity compared to this phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Once I had taken some coffee filter material and covered the little screen over the speaker and that kept the speaker nice and clean. But that had drawbacks also. the sound was a bit muffled and the filter material resonated with certain pitches making it undesirable. So now I just replace the speaker when it craps out.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
How easy is it to replace, or is it worth going to sprint and having them replace it? I don't want to open it up to replace the speaker and mess something else up, and then the warranty is voided.
Well...voided from a physical standpoint.

New to dinc2 couple of basic?

Hello my wife currently has a d2g and its her 3rd replacement so I called vz with my final straw. I was Not taking another replacement I'm on number 3 enough enough. So long story short there sending me a dinc2 as a replacement. The I was just wondering if there were any known issues I looked around the threads just saw here and there issues nothing specific to all dinc2. It looked like a really great deviceand I'm sure it will be. I how is the battery life btw? And the keyboard for that matter its going to be weird for her not having a slide out. any info is appreciated thanks.
Battery life is great...I had a OG Droid....took me a bit to get used to no slideout keyboard....I use flext9 since I didn't care for the stock style...love the smaller form factor that no physical keyboard allows

I really enjoy this phone. I would recommend getting a case for it. I have a couple very small marks where the screen meets the plastic on the edge. I believe it was from laying the phone face down at work. A case with a small lip, so the phone doesn't touch table resolved this. It didn't resolve the marks I already had. :s Battery life is very good!! Once I get this thing rooted, it will be a beast!!!
Yeah my last charge lasted 1 day and a couple hours. Love the phone like I said but it seems poorly built. Probably the worst hardware of any htc phone I've owned before. Even the vibration is different from phone to phone. Some have barely noticeable vibrate some have too strong and makes terrible rattling noises.
What's funny is that my first Dinc2 had the power and volume buttons kinda hard to press, the rattling USB port, and very low vibrations. But this one is loads better than the last one, easy power button, fixed port and earthquake-like vibrations.

Yeah there is a soft spot below the camera where it slightly pushes in. I think it is because of the design of the back cover

Mines fine, though the back cover seems to be fairly flimsy, definitely will get a case.
Use a bit of tape
I also noticed there is some space under the batery cover around the camera. It produced annoying noices when making a call so I just put on some small strips of tape. Problem solved.

i guess the gap is important to release the heat at the top part during data usage

No heat problem
The space between the cover and the body is really small. A few single tape strips at the right place prevent the cover from moving. No heat problems at all.

Mine does this if I don't have the rear cover installed correctly. It still has a TINY amount of push, but less than a mm. You can't notice it unless you look really close to it while pushing.

Good point, tape may become super-stuck-melted-on after a good round of video watching or game playing.
I've had to swap my Nexus for another one when my vibration motor started making weird noises. When my phone would vibrate, it would also come along with an annoying hum like a screw was loose or something.
Only had the phone for a week before that started happening.
I have the extended battery cover and it creaks really bad. My volume rocker is also loose and rattles. I am going to Verizon tomorrow to see if I can find a unit that is more solid.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Mine is solid as a rock. No creaking, no soft spots. I have a spare battery and swap it out once in a wile so I take the cover on and off a few times a week. It may just be that it's not sitting right.
Best way I have found is to start at the bottom work your way up one side then down the other. If any clips are missed or not sitting right it will feel cheap. Once they are all clipped properly, it's as solid as can be.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
+ 1 to gnex build quality, not quite the heft of the n1 but it is as solid can be for a plastic phone.

Are bad speakers common problem of HTC one?

2 of my lines got HTC one's
1 blue after 2 days speakers started making weird noises like cracks
going today to best buy to replace it.
my other line got silver one 2 days later external speakers work then totaly mute then start working again
both will be replaced as they are within 14 days but jeez did anyone have same issue/s ?
The only audio problems I'm having is with Bluetooth streaming and cracking audio in certain apps. But this is a kernel issue since AOSP ROMs do not have the issue and the international model currently has the same problem.

The blue htc one I had on one of my lines we replaced at best buy no issues this one works just fine.
Getting silver replacement tomorrow.
Will report tomorrow.
I had my first One blow the top speaker from a light drop. Was so garbled I could not hear a phone conversation. My replacement has serious popping and cracking at medium volumes now (no drops) but I can still hear in-call fine.
I work as a mechanic in a welding/fabrication shop so my speakers collect iron dust daily. I keep my phone in my lunch box and still get metal in it. I think the speakers are temperamental to ferrous dust and drops.
I also have read similar posts around the forums here about the top speaker popping.

Seriously. This phone is arguably still the best phone on the market. But the purple camera and fragile speakers are just silly issues plaguing users.
I never had any issues on my phone until I spill water on my phone. My friend told me let the cloth absorb the water and let it air dry. After that whenever I'm calling on speakerphone, there's a crumpling sound. However, if I'm listening to music, there are issues on it. Maybe it will improve once all the liquid dried out.

You shouldn't use your phone for at least a week or so after you spill water on it.
My bottom speaker is noticeably louder than the top and at certain frequencies seems to buzz a bit (especially during speakerphone calls). It also doesn't seem to be as loud as it should during regular phone calls, but I don't know if that's just me. My camera works fine though so without a root method I don't feel the need to risk sending it in to HTC and getting back a locked phone. For now I'll just deal with it.

Sol Ear buds not working with Moto X?

I got my "made for moto" navy sol ear buds from the moto website last week and they don't even work with my phone!
They work perfectly on my old iPhone 4 and RAZR m. However when I plug them into my.moto the sound only works if the jack is oriented in a specific way. If I turn it the music continually switches between my headphones and the phone speaker! To note, my moto works fine with other brand ear buds.
Anyone else have this issue??

I just got mine and opened the package just to test this out, and they work great. Yours might just be defective.

i got some sol buds too and i think they're garbage. the hard plastic digs in to my ears and they're not comfortable after long periods. also, the buds do not produce a full sound. i have a set of dell buds i got with a laptop some 7+ years ago that sound 10x better and require half the volume as these. i've been thinking about sending them back for another pair. the sound is seriously terrible (IMO). i really wanted to like these buds.

They don't sound good if you don't get a proper seal in your ear canal. If you move them and seal, they sound pretty good. Try the other sizes. I have to have 2 different size cushions on mine because I have funny shaped ears.
I'd agree they aren't really close to my JLab in ear headphones in terms of sound or build quality. Like the look of them though and the mic works great.
To anyone curious I discovered a bit extra glue around the bottom plastic ring on the jack. This was causing the audio to cut out at a certain angle when plugged in. I scrubbed off the glue and the headphones work fine!

thanks for the advice, but i've already tried this. it doesn't matter how far i shove those things in, they're not sounding better. i can have my X on one notch and hear audio on my Dell buds. The S/J require almost full volume.

My son's Moto X arrived yesterday, and his Sol Ear buds are showing the same issue (even has the same color as the OP). He has them at school so can't check for glue till later. They only cut out at certain rotation angle in the Moto X. Tried them in several other devices (Samsung GS3, Ipod Touch, ...) and the angle doesn't matter. Also tried other ear buds in the Moto X and they work just fine.
im returning mine to Motorola, definitely was a disappointment in term of performance. I use (stole) the Apple Earbuds (new version) has a lot better bass than the SOL Ear buds. I'm just trying to find something with similar or better performance that's not going to cost me $100
