I need a little help here.
I rooted my phone when I was in EL29. Everything worked nice and was fine, but then I ran the official update to ICS FF18. I didn't even realize there was a problem until I tried to under clock to save battery. It said root access was not granted, I downloaded root checker and it confirmed that I don't have root.
Super User is still installed but has no real function. I would like to know how to reroot without harming my phone.
I was also wondering about Clockwork recovery and installing different roms, my Android OS uses 60% of my battery and I'd like to have something a little more light weight. I tried flashing my recovery with Rom Manager but it does not have my model under devices.
Any help would be appreciated.
Dude, sounds like you just gotta read a little more(annoying answer I know).
If you ran the official update that's not rooted, you'd have to do either sfhubs one click official rooted's, or flash a custom rom through recovery. And also, Never use rom manager for anything, its not set up for our phones, so you don't want to use it to get temp recovery. You can use Odin to flash a kernel with recovery onto a stock setup to get you started, then flash either a custom rom, or one of the many stock rooted options in the dev section.

Ok, that makes sense. I was just worried that if I tried to root it and it was already rooted that I would brick or something. I'm pretty sure I can handle it now knowing that I just have to root and flash like usual.
Is there a "best" rom for the E4GT or is it just based on preference?
Root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
Then go here, use option D for cwm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
As sleshepic states, stay away from Rom Manager (for E4GT, anyway...). If you're having battery issues, you can use a battery conservation app. You can also underclock (or auto-underclock when phone usage is low) with Set CPU.

I have read through this forum and I am still unclear about a few things. First off I have a vibrant and have been flashing roms/themes, ect. I just got a epic 4g and get things straight before flashing.
1. The epic is completely stock, can i just use z4 root then flash cwm from rom manager on market? Or do I need a different kernel first? If I do need a new kernel, could I just use one of the kernel flashers on the market like SGS Flasher so I do not need to use odin?
Every thread I have seen has been mentioning using odin for the root/cwm 3 process. I have a macbook pro and my desktop pc is ancient so I try to avoid using odin whenever possible.
2. Just to confirm, is it really hard to actually brick this phone? I have messed around with my Vibrant, soft bricking it a few times but never had a problem restoring a stock rom.
3. Once rooted and cwm mod flashed I can go to any rom right?
Thanks and I know there are very similar questions already posted, I just wanted to be 100% clear because some answers were really vague.
You can use z4root but you can't install cwm with rom manager on stock kernel. It is really hard to brick the epic and yes once rooted with cwm you can get to flashing. Odin is used just to flash stock roms. I used it to flash the dk28 froyo rom and I only use it if I have to. Try to get your hands on a windows computer to root it with cwm. You can run the root plus cwm that is stickied in the development section. Once that is done you are ready to go. Good luck
Im in the exact same boat dude. I've had mine for about 4 days and still haven't done anything else but update to DK28. I did the z4root first, then thee next day I did the update. Now my SU doesn't work and I can't unroot using z4root. Phone just starts to vibrate and then I get a FC. I dunno, going to have to odin once I get some time. Really diggin my epic, but the vibrant was so simple and fun.

While you may be able to use z4root to to root your phone, like musclehead84, I am under the impression that you can't install CWM through Rom Manager on the stock kernel (LINK supporting this, I may be wrong though). It may work with other kernels, but to flash those kernels, you need CWM... kind of a Catch 22. Not sure if SGS Flasher will work for flashing a new kernel, but if I recall correctly, I remember reading atleast one thread resulting the need for a restore after using SGS Flasher (Odin or Nandroid, can't remember which).
And your not using Odin for root/CWM, your using adb (included with the one click root and CWM download), which I believe can be run from the terminal on a Mac with the right adb version ('one click' OSX LINK using older joey-krim root method, but if your flashing a new pre-rooted rom anyway, will work fine).

Yes, it is fairly hard to actually brick the Epic. If you have issues flashing your phone with Odin, the most likely culprit will be the usb cable. I have also read others having luck with removing the micro sd card before flashing, or even booting into download mode (which is done by holding '1' on the keyboard while pressing the power button) while leaving the battery removed.

Yes, with a couple caveat's... If your flashing a froyo rom, you will need to make sure you also atleast update the modem to the proper one (i.e. DK28) using Odin, or flash the leaked 'official' beta update.zip while on a stock DI18 to take you to DK28 with modem, (LINK with instructions, would do this before bothering to root or anything though). And if you decide to convert to EXT4 (DK28 only), that's a whole other story.
Hey guys. I actually don't even have this phone yet but will be getting it shortly. I definitely want to root it (I have a rooted EVO 4G and Xoom tablet) I'm a little confused though about the different methods I'm seeing.
My goal is to obtain a fully rooted phone w/ stock everything. What is the best method to do this?
ODIN this and you will get CWM, root, Ive found the LOStkernel to be a lot better than stock.

Sorry for the noob question but when I watch Qbking's video on this kernel he says you need to be rooted and have CWM installed to flash the kernel. But what you're saying is this kernel can provide root, add CWM and flash the kernel if you use Odin to do it? If so, I'm right in saying I'd want to download the TAR file rather than the ZIP? For root, would I need to flash SuperUser via CWM or is it built into the kernel?
I've been thinking about jumping into root soon to try out the Starburst ROM and I've evaluating the cleanest way to gain Root + CWM. I was thinking about using Bubby's method, but this seems solid too if my assumptions above are correct. This would be my first Android root by the way so I'm being patient and extra careful.
I just got this phone recently and rooted it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268548
thats a really good place to start. but to be honest every time you use odin and you flash a kernal in odin you'll get an annoying Yellow triangle that pops up in the beggining. So Your best bet is to flash to a kernal to gain root then flash the kernal from the unroot tutorial as if your unrooting the phone it wont remove superuser.apk automatically, and it will remove the yellow triangle, then from that point just use either cwm or the zimage flasher from adb to do it.
My recommended steps are
this one first for gaining root
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
then this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySskTt-S-cM
Follow links in youtube description.
after you do that, don't use odin anymore just use cwm and that adb script for changing kernals and you'll never get that annoying triangle again.
Also be aware that everytime you flash with odin the phones bootloader records that you flashed it, meaning even if you take it back to stock if sprint wants to look at it for warranty purposes they can still see that you did something to it. which means that youll need a $2 jig to wipe that count which I don't even know where that is.
If you can use a temp root thats used for 2.3 gingerbread on other devices then use second link in youtube to avoid using odin, I kinda wished I knew before because then I would have done some more experimenting with the phone. so annoying, I have control of this device and at the same time not which really sucks!
Edit BTW: Why use the starburst rom it doesnt really look that snazy to me for me to consider jumping to it the stock one works great why not just flash a deodex stock one and flash a theme to it, theres some really sick themes in the theme section of xda check it out! XD

I had some wake lag (about 2 second delay between pressing the power button and screen turning on) with the LoStKernel, so I've been running this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284511
It's been working well for me so far. You'll have to get root access first, so try out the LoStKernel to gain root access and if you don't like it switch to this.
I am running stock 2.36 with EL29. I would like to be able to tether and install an Internet unthrottle tweak I just saw and keep everything else stock. Can someone suggest the best path to achieve this? I have used the phone stock for about 2-3 months. It does about everything I need in its stock form. I miss these two things from my old Palm Pre.
Also, if I root to achieve this will I have to unroot and remove those tweaks to update to ICS?

I am not familiar with this tweak but if its more than just an app then it shouldn't be kept through such an upgrade. If it works with ICS then just redo it. There is often not much harm in trying to upgrade without wiping everything but you can face many problems with the causes of which being unknown just makes it more heartache than its worth.
Since the zerg exploit no longer works your going to be rooting the phone the same way your going to be rooting ICS. ODIN over a rooted tar for EL29. This can be done now in a no data fashion on your stock phone and you wont lose any contacts settings or apps. Once any changes are made to the system, possibly this tweak trying to allow an over there update can be disastrous.
Right now many of us are running leaked ICS roms that were prerooted and flashed via ODIN or custom recovery on EL29 or other gingerbread roms. If you have really messed with the system and even if you havent it would probably be advisable to backup your contacts and data and flash the phone with the intention of wiping everything on it, wether this is ODINing over the data destroying version of the tar or using Calkulin's format all in custom recovery.
With the tweak out of the question rooting your phone now and getting rooted ICS later is as simple as flashing a tar through ODIN. Sfhub has many "One Click" odin's packaged up ready to go in both no data and regular form. Sometimes final builds are leaked before the OTA but at worst you probably wont have to wait more than 48 hours after ICS is released to get the latest stable build from here.
Ok, so I have rooted my Epic Touch strictly using odin. I downloaded the stock ics tar that was already rooted. It did not however, include CWM for adding custom ROMs. I would I would like to know if i can put the CWM in and not mess up root or should I unroot and do the root a different way so CWM is included? I just dont want to brick my phone. I would like to play with different ROMs but not brick my phone.
Thanks in advance. Hope I stated what I am trying to do correctly.

Easiest way to add a kernel with CWM would be just using the old auto rooter. Option C and pick whatever firmware you have. So EL29 + CWM is L - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Just read the instructions. Goto settings > applications > developer options and tick the usb debugging and then connect the usb cable.
To help you understand odin and how you rooted your phone I will say this. When you used ODIN as the method to root your phone, and if you were on EL29 it was the only way to. What happened is you actually reflashed the firmware with a copy that was rooted. As long as you dont install a rom that for some reason doesn't have root which would be sorta odd or ODIN a tar over thats not rooted (or use a non rooted one click) you likely won't lose root. Unless you really wanted to
ODIN can also be used to flash parts of firmware such as the modem or a kernel etc. But as for your root someone rooted a rom repackaged it for flashing with ODIN.
Thank you!! Worked like a charm... Now to remember how to launch into CWM again lol....
Power the phone down, then hold volume up and power button together until CWM pops up.

I hate to be a killjoy but I'm pretty sure you stated that you're using ICS?
I wouldn't recommend using CWM in ICS. Even seasoned developers have turned their phones into paperweights because of issues with ICS and recovery.
If you want to see what ICS is like that's fine. However, if you're new and want to play around with ROMS that support recovery, you should ODIN back to Gingerbread.
There are a TON of threads here concerning issues with ICS and recovery that have had fatal consequences to the owners' phone.
There is almost too much information on this forum!
All I would like to do is root my (wife's) phone in order to remove bloatware and install Ad Blocker, ideally without losing personal data. The phone's firmware was updated to FH13 yesterday using Kies and I am comfortable using Odin.
I read the entirety of this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835033, along with several of the linked posts, and am still a bit confused. The OC upgrades are rather large and do not seem necessary since I am already running FH13. I downloaded the [ODIN] FH13 Kernel TAR.MD5, and can easily install this, but is there anything else I need in order to have root after installing this kernel?
Thank you.
Welcome to the E4GT.
Never too much information.
If as you've said you've already rooted the phone to FH13 and you are comfortable using Odin (I am hoping you mean you understand where to place the proper files and not just the 'one-clicks' - placing an update/tar/pit file in the wrong slot WILL kill your phone) you should probably grab Agat's latest safe kernel 5.4 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421
Grab the tar and use Odin. Then you'll have a stock rooted phone with a safe kernel with recovery (CWM)
Seriously though taking a little time reading the stickies and how-tos will provide you with loads of information that can/will keep you from bricking your phone and save even more time being frustrated. Along with the added benefit of not being the one who killed your wife's phone.
Do you wife's phone right; have it all just work and be bullet proof and you'll be a hero. Kill it and you'll probably never hear the end of it.
Good luck.
leaderbuilder,
Thanks for taking time to reply.
To be clear, I have not yet rooted the phone - that is what I am trying to accomplish. I downloaded the kernel you referenced and loaded it using Odin. Upon reboot, I saw the yellow diamond with the exclamation point. Once the phone was up-and-running, I tried Root Checker and it indicated that the phone was not rooted. What step did I miss?
Thanks.
You have a couple of choices from the point at which you are at.
You can get the supersu zip, and flash in the phones recovery to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28086976
From here, you'll need to get triangle away and use to reset the flash count and clear the triangle.
You can also go ahead and use the rooted no data one click that you saw but didn't want to use to root, then use triangle away. But then you'll lose the recovery you just did and you'll have to do again.

MoHoGalore,
I was just reading another post in which you were helping a novice like me.
I removed the triangle by reverting to a stock kernel - so i am back where I started. What i don't understand is this: The kernel is ~8 MB, but the one-click download is ~285 MB. Since rooting seems to be related to a small (?) change in the kernel, and since the phone is already running FH13, what else is included in the OC that is being installed to the phone?

Howdy - and well, you have removed the triangle but you may not have reset the binary counter.. more on that in a min..
And having a custom kernel doesn't mean you're rooted. A custom kernel is a tool for rooted rom's. That is what a one click can do for you, or you can do, with that first step you took.. (And the one click is the "core" of the build that you're replacing, that is rooted. If that makes sense.)
So, here's a few line ups that I would do if I were you;
1. Odin a rooted rom tar (Crawrj has these avalible in current updates) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844109 check out the first few posts, tells you all you need to do this. (The link is FH13. FH23 is said to be a dev build and has issues that are, well, going to be there..)
2.Odin a custom kernel (Which you did, and I guess now you're back stock) I had to change the order as I first posted. The rom tar will place stock recovery/kernel back. So you want to odin the custom kernel after the rom.
Or
1. Odin custom kernel. (Which you did, and I guess now you're back stock)
2. Using either superuser or supersu, root your rom (There are flash-able zips and tars for Odin)
3. Using triangle away, clear the triangle and reset binary counter.
Or
1. Get Garwynns One click no data and complete the operation in a few steps. (You can find that in RWilco's thread in post #2 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835033)
At the point that you do get rooted, and your on ICS, you need to run triangle away and confirm binary flash count if you ever want to send your phone in for service and want it not to show you flashed anything.. Just my suggestion.
