Has there been anything developed that can be applied to the stock ROM (rooted) to enable the AOSP tether, overriding Verizon's tether?
If not, why?
Is it a kernel issue? Can it be done on a stock ROM at all? Etc...
If you believe it to be possible, can you guide me toward information so that I can dive into this rabbit hole? I have background in development, though I've never touched Android, the OS, or the kernel, so I'm looking for a good place to get started.
I understand that I can just install a custom ROM, but that is not the answer to the puzzle I'm trying to solve.

This is not AOSP tether. I have considered poking around in its source though.
As I remember it, my OG Droid needed a kernel modification to run android-wifi-tether where the Nexus doesn't. Figure it might be tapping into something existing.
As I said before, never played around with any of the dev stuff on Android, so feel free to correct my way out left speculation with fact.

Confused - if it works, why does that matter? Just curious.
I see that devs have it worked out in their ROMS, so I wondered if it was available as a patch in the same way that battery percentage patches have been in the past.
The Android-Wifi-Tether is a good piece of software, but I figure that whatever is built into the OS is probably WAY more stable. I've always had problems with the software for one reason or another and I'm currently having stability issues on the Nexus.
I'm also interested to be able to learn more about how tethering operates on the backend because I'm currently having issues with my tethering speed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436598
I could possibly avoid the speed issue by installing another ROM or trying to wipe and see if that fixes it, but that would not actually SOLVE the problem. I want to know why.
Note, should my speed issue go away I would still be interested in getting AOSP tether running.
TLDR; I'm curious too.
you should try this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
it can't be blocked by verizon, and it's made by the creator of clockwork mod.
I did try Tether in an attempt to determine if android-wifi-tether was the culprit of my speed problems and I had the same slow results. Aside from that, my interest is in getting the AOSP tether into a patch. I'm setting up to poke around inside the source code now.
Wish me luck!

The only difference between carrier tether and aosp tether in ICS is provisioning.

Just add a tether widget using Switch Pro Widget and it overrides the check. Easy, free tethering.

I tried the tether widget you shared. I'm getting 4G speeds with it, but still not with any other tether program...
Can you point me to some more info about the above quote? I'm not being a smart-butt. Just genuinely curious as to the deeper answer of why. It seems as though the other tether apps are pulling from the 3G radio.
I just thought of a way to test it... Make a phone call while tethering and see if it dies. Not sure if the Nexus has SVDO, but I'll turn off LTE to ensure that it's riding on 3G and make a second test to confirm.
I can't make a call right now, so I'll try later and post results.
I'm still interested in how this is circumvented by the widget and why the 3G is being used be the other tether programs, if this is actually what is happening.
Hmm...
Funny business going on. I just tried android-wifi-tether once more for kicks and now it's running on 4G speeds.
Rebooted the phone to make sure that it stuck and it did.
Not sure why, but still interested to know.
Out in left field (but still reasonable) speculation is welcome.
Sad that I will not get to try and test my 3G theory. I do have my clockworkMod backup and might try it all tomorrow and see what results I get.

I can confirm also that using a WiFi hotspot toggle will override the Verizon hotspot check. I saw this on another forum and tried it out. It works flawlessly. Apparently this worked on Thunderbolts on VZW but not on other devices. If I had to guess, they implemented the check in a very rudimentary way that is bypassed by using a toggle. The toggle likely just executes a command to enable the hotspot whereas the toggle in the settings has a check in place first and then the command is executed. Either way, it works and I don't have any issues at all.
A more apt title for this thread would be "Verizon tether patch", seeing as AOSP has tethering and doesn't need any patching to enable it, like you do on American carrier-phones.
After digging around in some source code and stumbling upon some relevant topics both here and other forums, I see that this is something that happens before compile. I suppose it would be possible to replace recompiled versions of these files, but I don't know enough about what I'm doing here to make that happen at this point.
A few other people have been down this road of inquisition for ROM development. The answers were out there, I just didn't have the right keywords until I started poking in the ICS source code.
Ever since the last time I installed a rooted ROM (stock Sense ICS edit: gingerbread), neither Wifi Tether nor Wireless Tether will work with my laptop. The apps launch and seem to run ok, but a few minutes after my laptop connects, it then disconnects! After that it wont connect anymore unless I close either tethering app and re-start them.
I have been using PDA Net, which is fine, but the free version won't connect to secure sites. Before I give up and pay for the full version, I thought I'd check and see if there are any other option available.
My requirements are:
Works with 4G
Works with secure sites.
I would prefer a wireless solution so I can use it with my (cough) iPad as well, but that would be a luxury.
I have not confirmed that my wireless issue is due to either app. Wifi Tether used to work with my previous ROM (also a stock Sprint rooted ROM). I flashed to an updated ROM because I could not get my Bluetooth working with the last one. Now Bluetooth works, but I've lost the ability to use Wireless tethering!
I'm kind of afraid to flash to a ROM with unlocked Sprint wireless tether because I don't want something else to break!
Wireless tether 2.0.7 works on pretty much anything. Does not work on evo 3d

Sorry, I meant Gingerbread.
I'm on 2.3 Android, and using Wireless tether 2.07, And she ain't working for me. That is why I'm looking for another tethering method.
Guess I'll just have to re-flash and take my chances with breaking bluetooth again. I wanted to avoid that cause when I was trying to fix my Bluetooth before, nobody here was able to help. I had to reflash then too.
This is like trying to"fix"Windows by reinstalling it. You're not really fixing anything.

I'll go ahead and link you to a thread will appropriately address this one. Please read through the entire thread.

Well, I'm more puzzled than ever now.
My question asks about the existence of wireless tethering apps OTHER than WiFi Tether and Wireless Tether, specifically apps that are not restricted to non secure sites.
I spent almost a full hour searching before I posted, but I did not mention that in my question as I did not think it was pertinent.
I had already looked at the sticky about wireless tethering, but that thread discusses wireless tethering SPEED issues - not my issue. Again, my issue is loosing the connection between my phone and client (originally my laptop, but since confirmed with my iPad) when using either of the two mentioned wireless apps.
As long as the tether stays connected, I have no problem with 4G speed. But I only remain connected for two or three minutes.
And the thread Concordium linked to seems to be about bashing the original poster of that thread, so no help there either. Unless I missed something.
Wireless tether for root connects to anysite you want I use it everyday on 2 devices works just fine connecting to anything I need

Thanks. I mentioned in my original post that both Wireless Tether and Wifi Tether are not working on my EVO.
Initially they do start and connect, but within 2 to 3 minutes they both stop tethering. I'm starting to wonder if some other app may be interfering.
Does anybody know for sure if my phone's WiFi should be running or not? Sometimes I get that "What the hell..." message.
I reread your original post and it looks like you answered your own question in your original post. It DID work until you flashed to another ROM. So common sense would suggest that it is some kind of issue with the ROM or the way it is setup. Perhaps you should take a look at that and use that in your query. If you don't want to flash something else then that's cool. But you're not going to fix your problem until you fool around with it.
Well, yes, but Like I said above, sometimes I get that "What the hell? Your phone takes over the WiFi..."
I don't know if you are familiar with that. It suggests to me that something is hijacking my WiFi radio.
Maybe I need to learn how to ask better questions.
I am running rooted stock 4.0.4 IMM76K with FC04/FC05 radios on a Verizon Nexus. I can not get the stock tethering or wifi tether to work. Both turn on without errors but none of my computers see the signal. I have always used wifi tether on other phones and not seen an issue. I have searched around but I can't seem to find anyone with my issues. Any suggestions?
I would try using an app like foxfi or pdanet. Both work well for wifi tethering. Also, both have the ability to hide tethering usage. You may have to sideload these apps, i believe Verizon wont let you get to them anymore. Also, I would no blow through my data allowence if I were you. This might cause them to get look a little more carefully at your data usage.
Try tetherbee.
It worked for me.
U must search online for it though.

Even she'll get in trouble if she gets caught.
Would this be a rom or kernel issue? It doesn't seem to be a application issue? Many others have used both the options I have tried already without issues on the Nexus

Theres foxfi but i think only bluetooth tether works on it. As for the wifi tether app. Make sure the Disable wake lock button is UNCHECKED. I recomend checking the keepalive box as well. also even tho there is a GS3 setting now Galaxy nexus tends to work better for me. Also if ur running a tw based rom delete ConnectionManager.apk from system/app. Gets in the way.
And as far as stuff in the playstore being "not compatible". Thats most likely cuz Sprint wants it that way. Never hurts to download elsewhere and give it a shot-- https://dl.dropbox.com/s/t9pqttpf4p4bp76/blackmart[1].apk?dl=1

Personally I never had to use mss clamping or routing fix however I have ticked them and they didn't seem to make any difference. I would however keep the WiFi driver reload ticked. Seemed to make the successful connection rate better. Its like the equivalent of turning your WiFi off and back on for a fresh start everytime. And yes that's what connectionmanager.apk is. Even with the option disabled it still tends to come on n f*ck up tethering
I know this is probably not the section for this topic but there have been several posts on it with no definitive answers....I use FoxFi WiFi Tether on all my devices without a glitch, even the new Nexus 5, but not this phone " WHY ????? With this device it shows a connection to the computer but it wont allow the internet connection....I can use the USB function of the FoxFi but have to install PDAnet to work. I know TrevE WiFi Tether app is installed with most Roms and works to a certain degree but not copletely with ZVC. From what I can deduce, it has something to do with the WPA (WPA2) settings for the phone. This is obviously a Dev issue so will someone with the know-how fix this problem for everyone....Personally, I will be happy to donate to someone to get it done.....so "Brains", get a project going on it and help us out....Thanks...

So basically you are saying it is possible to make the wifi tethering issues better for this device, just finding a Dev to work out the problems is the issue..
Like I've said before, I don't mind donating to that project if someone will step up to do it. I'm simple minded when it comes to stuff like that but would it not be possible to copy code from another LG device ( like the Nexus 5) that tether works well and just work it in?

i was looking at another source for the sprint gs4 it is missing all the entitlement smali code in services.jar so even if you delete the entitlement code you have to sift through the other files to delete any other code that defines the entitlement code. ill pull both of them up on a diff viewer.

OK I thought you were trying to download on your phone. On your computer you have to make sure the correct ports are open. Im not sure but I think the ports that need to be open for torrents start around 6881 and if its not open the program will try to use the next available port that can be used for torrents. Vuze makes setup easy and is much faster than bittorrent or utorrent and its not constantly downloading background stuff like bittorrent and utorrent.
