Kernel Questions - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why does the Play seem to need a different Kernel for every rom?
My brother has an HTC Inspire and he can flip flop between gingerbread, ICS, CM7, and CM9 without changing his kernel.
Why can't this be with the Play?
Also is there a phone app that will let you flash a different kernel? I kinda want to change on the fly without needing a computer to do so.

On the Xperia Play, the recovery (CWM, for instance) is inside the kernel. This means you can't change the kernel from the recovery. Your brothers' phone does need different kernels, but they are automatically flashed if you flash another rom.

Recovery is in the kernel for the Play, most other phones have recovery as a separate partition. You can't alter the partition if you're using it.

So there is no way that we could run recovery from another place? Like a partition on the SD card? Or make another partition on the phone?
I don't know much about these things, just asking because this is interesting

[Q]What to do next?

Hey all sorry for the stupid question but I have a r800at and its unlocked, rooted, and I've got dooms kernel loaded no problem (this phone OCs to 1.9 stable it's nuts lol). When I try to flash zeros ROM but every time I flash it in recovery when it reboots I have no launcher to cell signal and the buttons don't work. I've tried 4 times with no luck. I get the idea that I can boot directly from dooms kernel into recovery but I'm not sure how, I still plug it in to the computer. Anyone have done insight in what the deal is? Thanks for any info anyone has.

It might be that zerojay's rom is not compatable with your device. If i remember correctly he has a R800i and there might be some slight differences between *i* and *at* models in the framework that makes it not work on *at* play's?
Regards Dousan...
You might want to ask in zerojay's thread if you haven't already

Ok cool I was just looking at that actually. When you did flash tool did you get to pick the play as the device because all I get is x10 or the mini. Also another stupid question, how do you get into flash mode on the play? Is it still back button and plug it in? Thanks!

Yeah turn off phone and then back button and usb.
If you're using flashtool 0.2.9.1 (beta) there should only be one flashtool.exe to choose (x10FlashTool.exe). If you plug it in while on you'll get multiple choises of phones to pick from while in flashtool window.
If you need more info on how to use flashtool here's a link to a small tut i wrote:

[Q] Is there a ICS Kernel for MK16i with CWM?

Title says it all, I just want a Kernel for ICS with CWM.
Kernels are booted with fastboot. CWM just flashes roms/mods etc.
He wants to install CWM.. As far as I know, only ICS option is Riyal's test kernel which isn't really "done" yet but it has CWM and lets you overclock too. Also tends to reboot phone occasionally, mostly during deep sleep.

Exactly, I want to have CWM on ICS.
Yeah I've heard Riyal is working on Ultima ICS, but I really want to try it but with some tweaks to improve its performance.
I think I'll have to wait him to finish a stable version of Ultima ICS.
Thanks anyway.
Why don't you try pvyParts' Xperia CWM Auto-Installer from the market?
You then have Stock ICS Kernel with CWM installed.

You guys kind of summoned pvy, lol.
Well, now that I have your attention and know that it works.
I imagine it installs the CWM in the Rom and not the Kernel and that if I do a full wipe it will go away, correct?
Also, it works with a button combo or such from the start up or just through a menú when already booted?
Yes and yes. It doesn't touch the kernel.
You can invoke it through the app i.e. boot into recovery or the usual method by pressing back repeatedly when you see the LED light up at the Sony boot screen.

Is there any actual way to install CWM in MK16i ICS 4.0.4? The app in play store "Xperia CWM Auto-Installer" explicitly says that it only works on 2.3 (GB), and sure enough, even with root permision, it says it is incompatible with MK16i ICS 4.0.4

Besides I wanted to have it IN the Kernel, which is already being developed by Riyal. This is an old question.

[Q] Clockwork or based recovery for Arc S

I have a LT18i, Android 4.0.4 with build .431 and it is rooted and has a locked bootloader. I have looked everywhere for a way to install clockworkmod recovery on it without flashing a custom rom or kernel, but it doesn't seem possible. Next, I tried a clockwork based recovery but only found DoomLord's recovery. But it had LT26i or Xperia S listed as the device so I'm not sure if it would work on mine. Will it? If not, is there any other clockwork based recovery I could install?
try the CWM Auto Installer on Google Play
Download pvyParts' Xperia CWM Auto-Installer from the market. That should give you access to CWM.
Do keep in mind that it's been reported that the phone doesn't charge if you switch it off; it tends to bootloop. It works fine if the phone is on though. Pvy will be updating the app shortly.
This works well if you want to take Nandroid backups and (or) flash update.zips.
And if you do plan on flashing custom kernels, you would need to unlock your bootloader. For custom ROMs, you're limited to Stock based ROMs till you do decide to unlock your bootloader.
Cheers!

[Q]Internal and system partition size

Hi, i have read that if i flash a arcS.ftf on my arc i will get bigger partitions.
If i do that, theres a few thing i wonder.
Do i have to use the arc s kernels and roms ?
If i restore to a earlier CWM, will it shrink and/or cause bootloop?

Well I'm not sure but if you are talking about custom roms then there is no such a thing like Arc or Arc s specific rom. Only difference between these phones is a 400mhz in a cpu power so there shouldn't be any problems with oficial rom files either.
edit
Now I think you shouldn't flash stock Arc s roms because I don't know if they wont force 1.4ghz on your cpu and this could be dangerous. Do some more research on this matter or wait for more qualified replies.
Odp: [Q]Internal and system partition size
I am on LT18i ROM and I can say - flash it. Everything is like on LT15i ROM but /data and /system are bigger. I think it's connected to /vendor partition on Arc.
I don't know if the clock was on 1,4GHz on stock, but I see you are going to use custom kernels anyway so you can change it.

I have a unlocked bootloader. Im using custom rom and kernel, oc 1.4 ghz.
Some roms here require the bigger partitions.
If i flash the acrS.ftf, do i have to use the arcS roms and kernels or continue with the files for arc ?

It looks like you wont get any useful answers so why wont you try it for yourself? Its not like it will eat your phone. If you have guts to repartition your phone then flashing incompatible rom wont be a problem. Its not like you cant flash Arc ftf if something goes wrong.
I have locked botloader and I flash stock lt18 rom on my lt15 using flashtool. And I have now 420mb internal memory. I'm using Miui now but still have bigger inernal memory, so I think my kernel is for lt18 but the system recognizes my phone as LT15.

Access to /boot partition

Hello,
I wanted to ask - I'm an owner of my good ol' Xperia Arc lt15i, currently running newest cm11 thanks to LegacyXperia, and I try to get the phone updated as soon as new nightly appears.
Is there any way to get access to /boot partition from phone, to use, for example, flashify? I can use it on my Sony Jlo. I want to skip the PC using fastboot procedure.
I think I read somewhere that 2011 xperias can't flash kernel from "inside", but I'm unsure... I can't do it from CWM, though...
