Cheap desktop dock from ebay is junk - Galaxy S III Accessories

I bought this dock http://www.ebay.com/itm/Desktop-Doc...293200?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item27c97f6250
I think it a generic dock designed to fit as many devices as possible. The shape of the dock doesn't match the phone. Without the case the phone is held just by the USB connector. With a case it is supported only from the back. The slot in the dock would work for a device at least 1/2" (12mm) thick. The bed of the slot is flat and GSIII bottom is curved, so the phone is wobbly. Basically, this dock is a ripped USB port waiting to happen. The rear connector for an USB cable is so deep in the case that cable falls off.
The dock is very cheap, now you know why.

Well its cheap for a reason.

I have bought a lot of amazingly cheap electronics and accessories from China. Some of them do work as well as those you can buy in stores for x10 price. But others are crap. I wanted to share my experience so people wouldn't waste their time and $4.

probably wouldn't have bought, now definitely won't. Thanks for the heads up!

+1, all you have to do is make a back support for the phone with some 1/16" aluminum sheet or something. I've done that to a number of iPhone docks in the past and it works perfectly.

Xoom case manufacturing error?

I'm beginning to believe that Verizon's case manufacturer made a pretty big screw-up...
Has anyone purchased the dock and the case? Due to the cost of these accessories, it's unlikely that many people buy the dock AND the case that sits it upright... For those that did: If you notice, the dock has a second insert for use if you also bought the case. Now, if you actually do swap out the dock inserts, in order to dock the device with the case; you have to unfold the flap as if you were standing it up anyways...
If you do this, and use the insert for the case--- there is lots of room if you dock it in this fashion. There's virtually no way to bend the case 'enough' to make it fit with the case on, so why send the secondary insert?
Now, if you do this... (silly I know) install the case on your Xoom upside down!
Wait for it...
That's right... it fits PERFECTLY on the dock with the additional insert when loaded in this fashion.
Now... we've read so many complaints about not being able to charge the device while in the case and having the device closed... If you install it "upside down" you'll notice both the usb connector, the 2x media contacts, and the power port is exposed and usable while closed.
OK, so what's the catch? The volume buttons are covered up. (/facepalm)
Quite clearly there was at least one manufacturing 'oops' here... Clearly the design of the case that went into production was somehow mirrored the 'opening' to the wrong side...
So... My point...
The dock insert is useless...???
I believe the insert is for use when you have the silicone case on the xoom and maybe some future cases. I just take my xoom out of the case when I use the dock at night. Will be looking at the silicone cases this week to see how it looks and feels on the xoom.
Dock insert is for gel case. Works perfect with the gel case and insert.

Wow--- I completely forgot those existed. Makes sense now, although you have to admit it is as if the cad design on the folder case must have gotten flipped or something, lol. Poor design all around.
Looks like I'm returning the Xoom anyways, with Sprint announcing their release of a 4G ready Xoom next month, and what seems to be Verizon is blocking PPTP traffic... I'm wavering...
For those of you removing the Xoom from the folio case, does it seem to cause any undue wear and tare on the tabs that lock the Xoom in? I have the dock and case but am still waiting on delivery of the Xoom.

I have no wear at all. The case is flexable enough to loosen one side out at a time, do not snap or pop the Xoom in and out and you have nothing to worry about. I was worried about this as well after reading the post, which I now see were exagerated, and legit damage was likely operator error.

Excellent cheap sync cradle for the T-989

I got 2 of these off eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SAMSUNG...159056?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f0f089010
They are meant for the "standard" (AT&T or International) GS2's but it fits my new T-989 perfectly even with the DIZTRONIC TPU case on it. It probably fits most any device with a bottom micro-usb port on it. It comes with a removable rubber adapter for smaller devices. Not bad for $11 from China. Got it in about 10 days. It's a knockoff of the iPhone Universal base. No audio out ports. Just sync/charge.
i purchased the Original from Samsung only $40, and it comes with extra 1850 mAh original battery with NFC

Can you post pics of your T-989 w/ TPU case in the dock?
Do you know if the USB transmits audio and if it has a back 3.55mm jack?
I ordered two of the Sinjimoru Sync stands. They're cool looking and lightweight. I removed the two lock tabs on the cable that make the cable stick in tighter. I'm planning on mounting them to something that won't lift up easily when I try to remove the phone. Overall, worth the $22.

The stand you are linking to doesn't charge or sync. That stand is just a holder with no connection directly to the phone. 2 totally different things with totally different purposes.

It fits my T989 with the Diztronics case no problem and will fit any similar "thinness" case. Snug, but no problem. I looked at the D30 case the other day and put them up against each other and while the left to right size are identical the front to back on the D30 is a bit more and my guess is it wouldn't fit. I was surprised when my Diztronic case fit but it did NOT need to be forced, just a slight push. For $11 you really can't go too wrong.

They are still tight on the base, and would tip over if you pushed them. They're fairly stable, but it is kind of a pain to use one hand to hold the base grab the phone.
I did fix that today. I went out into the alley behind the loft and grabbed a brick. A few minutes after meeting the dremel and a little bit of epoxy, they're stable.
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6233/6366960059_565143ef63_b.jpg
That's what the stands look like mounted to the brick, and in the Body Glove Diamond cases. I did play a little with some LEDs and lighting the bases up, since they're clear/black acrylic and the light travels through them. I'm going to hold off on that for now, but maybe soon.
to choking am a bit confuse on ur pic is that just a stand whit out the option of charging or a stand whit charger?
There is a cable that comes up behind the stand, and snaps into the stand. It charges, and I bet you could use the stand for other phones, but I can't guarantee that. I know it works fine with the T989.
Well thx for ur response ill see if i get my hands on one this on up coming week

Yes, if you want to spend $40 on the back, and another $47 on the Energizer charging station, and have a phone that is thicker and heavier. That's a very good solution to save five or ten minutes! That's assuming you can even find one!

Couldn't you do these mods and sell them for profit?
I'd rather pay an extra 20-30 bucks on top all other costs than do it myself. Though it would have to be a solid build, not something put together with a car kit.

I could, but it's not worth it to me, and it's really pretty easy (and fun). Also, the battery cover is not so cheap, so by the time you added up all costs, and made a decent profit, the kit would cost $50-$60! (And people are doing it on Ebay already!)

But yeah. I'll check ebay and probably buy one if it was that cheap (relatively speaking - 90 bucks from verizon and it looks like ass).

I will report back with results once I get it AND report just how "thick" a case will work with the touch stone. I don't care if the magnet holds or not (I will design a holder around it) just need it to charge through my hybrid case. fingers crossed
A few fine points

a couple of points:
1. The Samsung cable and charger probably WON'T work. The Touchstone is very picky about chargers and cables, I suggest just buying the Touchstone charger, they are about $4. See the link in my main post.
2. It works fine with my Rock Case, and also with a thicker TPU case. It may not work through a very thick hybrid case, although some have cut a hole in the inner silicone over the charging coil, and gotten it to work.
Let us know how it goes.
interesting. I have actually "stocked" up on oem samsung cables because they have proven SO reliable in working with "everything" same with KINDLE cables (but they cost 2.5 times as much but are VERY nice cables)
I won't use the stock charger I have 2amp chargers I use for all my usb stuff.
I will check the link for the OEM cable $4 is well worth it. I ordered a few cheap touch stones but ones that come with cables are MUCH more expensive
I will try it and see what happens. sadly between case and wireless charging case is more important to me (expensive phone) so fingers crossed
maybe I can "make do" with a thinner but still protective case most of the time and just use the hybrid when I am getting into "rough" activities we shall see.
while it won't work with my HYBRID cases that I use it will work with an otterbox. I could put the coil under the poly carb layer of the OTTER BOX case (I don't have an otter yet so not 100% sure of this) and then run that to contacts on the cover and THEN run contacts inside the cover to the phones contacts. that would move the coil right to thin case distance from the touch stone.
we shall see.

It should work fine, although you may have to wave the upper part of the back of your phone over the NFC tag, as the coil may block the lower part of the phone.
That's why I revised my instructions for my mod to move the coil lower on the phone, so that NFC would be less finicky.

Wow, no need to be a jerk. Some people don't want to lose NFC or compass. Also, some people would rather not tamper with their phones.
By the way, its not $40 and $47, its $20 for the back and $20 for the palm charger.

I wasn't being a jerk, but simply correcting your misinformation. NFC is not lost at all, nor is the compass function if you use the original Palm metal disks. And the cost of the Verizon back is $39 not $20. (See the link below.) Also, it is very hard to find, and isn't in stock online. Amazon lists the Energizer Qi for $47 unless you buy it from a dubious seller. By my math that's $86 total for a mod that costs less than $20 if you do it yourself. I completely understand your last point, which is that some people don't like DIY solutions, and if that's true, then it makes sense to go your way. Or if you have two SG3's, and want to use the same Qi pad.

Pins lined up well. However after putting the cover on, I noticed that the back of the phone is not flat. It has a slight curve in the middle which you can notice when you put the phone on a flat surface and it wobbles.
I also have a slight gap between phone and cover (on right hand side only). Because of the added mass of the charging circuit, the cover does not sit flush with phone. This doesn't bother me though as you'll only notice it if you look for it.

I'm looking as well and have not made any decisions. The one you've listed should match the silver model well, but I think one of the bottom "leg" will block the One's Micro USB port, which means you can't charge the phone while it's in the stand. That's pretty much a deal breaker to me.
I am thinking about the phone in that stand horizontally.

Do you have to have the phone off center when vertical to plug it in? Looks like the center cutout is too narrow to avoid that. Other than that concern, it looks like a very nice stand and I might get one.
Slightly yes, but it's still very sturdy on the stand. I had to move the phone less than an inch to the left

Official Nexus 7 Docks Available...Finally

Both are on Amazon. The wired goes for $50, and the wireless goes for $70 (contrary to what the article states). It shows $90, but that's from a third party seller. You have to choose Amazon as the seller under "More Buying Options" if you want it for $70. Ships in 2-4 weeks.

Agreed, while I like the idea of docks they are just always over priced and never work if you have a case. I have a nokia qi charger on my nightstand for my nexus 5, might as well just pick up another one for around $25 for my desk. So nice not having to plug in the charger anymore.
I have both the docks, they are available in the UK through the Asus Shop.
The wireless dock is a lot smaller than you might expect. It comes with a charger which has a very big suppression core at one end. It will charge the Nexus 7 with a case fitted or even with the case open (doubled up) to expose the screen. It only works with the Nexus 7 in landscape mode and does not have any magnets to hold the Nexus 7 in place. It is far less fussy than the Google official Qi charger which requires almost millimeter precise positioning and barely works with most cases.
The wired dock is made of a semi transparent grey plastic that attracts grease marks like a neodymium magnet. You need to remove the case from your Nexus 7 for it to connect, it is a very snug fit. The base has a micro HDMI connector and a micro USB for charging. Unlike an MHL adaptor it does not need power to work. This is really most suitable for semi permanent use, if you use a case to protect your Nexus 7 you would probably be better off buying a slim port display lead instead.

Cool. I ordered the wireless one from Amazon (for $70) after I made this thread. Even though it said "2 to 4 weeks" to ship, I actually just got the notification that it shipped today. Should be getting it by Tuesday. I was looking for a second standing Qi Charger (for work) since I use my Nexus 4 Orb at home. I'll see how it works with my N7 2013 as well as my N5. Do you have any experience using the wireless one with a N5?

Welp... Just received the wireless charger. First off, let me say, it works wonderfully with the N7 2013, which one would hope considering this Qi charger was made specifically for it. It does look pretty slick and is A LOT smaller than I was anticipating. However, I'm sad to say that it's going back to Amazon. The main reason is that it doesn't work with my Nexus 5 like I was hoping it would. I have my N5 in a Diztronic TPU case, and the bottom lip of the case apparently raises it just high enough to be out of range of the charging coils. It will charge without a case, but I'm not about to commit to taking it out of the case every single time I want to use this charger for my N5. The only reason I could justify paying this price was if I would be able to use it on my N7 AND N5. I guess I'll just wait for the Tylt Vu to go back on sale again and pick that up instead. Pretty disappointed.
It is surprisingly smaller than you expect, whoever took the promo pictures should give Tom Cruise a call.
Shame it's not compatible with your N5 in it's case, that is a little surprising as this is the most unfussy Qi charger I have used to date.

The only reason I could justify paying this price was if I would be able to use it on my N7 AND N5. I guess I'll just wait for the Tylt Vu to go back on sale again and pick that up instead. Pretty disappointed.

Yeah I just got mine last week and I think I might be sending it back as well. The bottom lip isn't big enough to secure the N7 2013 while its in my poetic case so it doesn't really work as the "plot-and-charge-grab-and-go" solution that I hoped it would.
Bummer :crying:
