[Q] OTG cable enables USB Pendrive reading, but not keyboard / mouse operation - Galaxy S II Accessories

Hello.
I bought this USB OTG cable from Amazon :
http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00646KVBW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00.
With it, I can read USB pen drives content without any problem. It is detected as soon as I plug it and I can play MP3 files from the drive for example.
However, I'm unable to use any USB mouse / keyboard or gamepad (ICS is supposed to have added gamepad profile...), although i've seen many people doing it.
I'm using stock ICS 4.0.3 (unrooted, but that shouldn't be a problem...), I've tried to use USB Joystick Center to see if anything was detected, but no luck so far, although Videos show people even using a wireless XBOX360 controller with what seems the exact same configuration...
Did I miss something ? Is it possible that my cable only allows to use usb mass storage but nothing else ?
I hope someone has some experience to share...
Thanks in advance for your help and sorry if this has already been answered.

Bump ? Anyone ?
Do you think I should have the thread moved to the main Q&A forum ?
Thanks

The cable is fine the kernel isn't you will most likely have to change the phones kernel to enable a few other host otg options.

Thanks for your help.
Is there a way to enumerate the modules implemented in the kernel without rooting ?
I really thought stock kernel had the mouse / keyboard hid profiles...
Thanks again.

Can some who knows alot about USB otg start a thread

There is a lot of interest about this spread out through all of the threads. Can someone with more knowledge than me on the subject post a "how to" on it? Just an idea to centralize the subject. Thanks

USB OTG didn't originate on the KF. Do a search on XDA and I'm sure you'll find plenty of threads.
search in threads
Org is present in kernel 3.0 and u can instal ics with kernel 3.0

That's the thing, the threads are flooded with otg questions. I my self am not too interested in it, but alot of people are and if there was a guide written for it, it could unclutter the threads a bit. Just trying to bring the topic to one spot.

Search the threads, derp.
Searching the threads won't help. This information is scattered all over the place making search pretty much impossible. The ridiculously-obselete forum format doesn't help, either.
I did get mounting to work with the Stickmount app from the market. The multiple partitions on my external drive supposedly mount under /sdcard/usbstorage but they show as empty in any file managers.
Edit: Based on Stickmount's info the reason the drives show up empty is more than likely because I'm using an adapter instead of a cable. I'll update when my cable comes in the mail.
all I know is I can't wait for Bluetooth otg, my emulators with a bluetooth wiimote will make me a happy man lol

+1 FPSE + ps3 controller = ultimate time killer lol
plus with all this otg stuff would we be able to plug in cams? for possible skype use? or google talk video chat. even better!
otg
hi all iv'e posted a bit about my knowledge of otg in different threads and thought id post what i know/figured out so far in this thread.
please correct me if you know any different.
the only difference between a usb cable & a otg cable/adapter is that the otg has pin 5 joined to pin 4 (this lets your kindle activate otg host mode). unfortunately most cables only have 4 cables attached (even if pin 5 is present in the connector) .
you can find an app called electrodroid in the market to see usb pin-out.
usb controller seems to be a good app to see which devices connect ok.
stick mount works well for me to mount usb drive.
tip's
download stickmount app, open and allow permission
turn off kindle & plug in otg cable connected to a powered hub (mine has a switch on the side, "bus or self", i set it on self) insert flash drive into hub.
then power on kindle when loaded the app stickmount should auto connect your flashdrive (there should be a popup) if not open up stickmount app and hit connect.
then you should see the popup.
open root explorer and goto sdcard you should see usb storage in there (for some reason on my 1st attempt to open root explorer it always shows as empty, just exit the reopen R/E).
?if you unplug otg cable without going into stickmount and disconnecting sometimes you can't remount without a reboot?
a mouse and keyboard should just work but iv'e also found that they also need to be inserted before booting up. my mac keyboard doesn't work at all but my mouse/keyboard combo ie. one dongle which both keyboard and mouse came with works fine
still playing with bluetooth. i can see it in usb controller app but can't switch it on yet, i think this is something hash is aware of and it needs something tweeking in the kernel.
everything seems to need the extra power of a powered hub. i did have my mouse working on its own once or twice but most of the time it needs powered hub.
here's a pic of my setup. hope this helps someone get it working as it's awesome.

I purchased USB otg cable -- ebay item #280820891599.
Installed stickmount and usb controller apps. Hash's Kernel #8. My generic 2gb USB stick is hot-pluggable, mounts at /sdcard/usbStorage/sda.
USB Controller indicates that my generic BT USB plugs (i have two of them) are "Connected USB devices" with the address 0001:0a12. So the system recognizes them, but what to do next?
i think i'm right in saying that hash needs to tweak the bt modules to allow us to activate it, mine shows the same but there is no way to toggle bluetooth yet.

So, I just need this cable:

and a few apps to be able to mount USB?
Offtopic, but in regards to the bluetooth PS3 controller. I was searching but I couldn't find any guides on how to get the pair code for the device. Do you have to do it within Linux or can it be done within Windows?
On topic, I've purchased a bluetooth controller and I can't wait to play my emulators.

USB OTG
Hy,
Same here, unable to mount usb stick using USB OTG Cable without having external hub.
The USB OTG cable is working fine on my Galaxy Note.
I've tried several ROM on the kindle fire with kernel #8 but none of them make USB OTG work.
Anyone here can give a clue please ?
Thanks a lot

USB OTG issues

I have a tmobile sgs3 with a stock rom (it was rooted, but latest update seems to have killed that), and after seeing the androidNZ connectivity demo I decided to play around with the usb otg. I am having some problems however. I have tried with 2 external hdds and a thumb drive and all three light up, but do nothing to the phone. I get no pop ups, and when I use astro to check the external usb drives, they all show up empty.
What am I missing?
Thank you!
I do not have that issue, but did you check USB debugging mode in Developer options?
I haven't tried to connect to an external HD, but USB Flash card works fine, as well as USB keyboard & mouse.
I've bought a $2 USB adapter for my phone and I have been able to mount a pendrive or a HD (when it is plugged to an external power source).
But when I try to connect a Mouse, Keyboard, Gamepad, etc., nothing happens. Not even an error message.
I'm using an official Android 4.03 rooted ROM (Claro Argentina).
Does anyone know what could be happening? The problem is my ROM (and it's drivers)? Is my USB otg adapter that is not compatible with mouse and keyboard?
I attach a screenshot of my system

USB OTG works with Pendrive, but not with Mouse/Keyboard

Hi there!
As it is written in the subject, the problem is related to the OTG feature of the Galaxy S2.
I've bought a $2 USB adapter for my phone and I have been able to mount a pendrive or a HD (when it is plugged to an external power source).
But when I try to connect a Mouse, Keyboard, Gamepad, etc., nothing happens. Not even an error message.

Same here with official ICS 4.0.3
I have the same issue with official ICS and CM9. I've seen youtube videos where they show mouse and keyboard just working on a GS2 just running official ICS.
As soon I see this, I tested it on my own SGS2 and it's works!
I'm using stock firmware LPW (open europe) with CF-Root.
I have had this problem too and I figured that this is problem with missing drivers in kernel (in my case) - it was firmware issue. Some firmwares (official) don't have all drivers necessary to work with all mouses and kayboards (some work some not). That's depends on how the kernel was compiled for firmware.
Try to install other firmware (official) or other kernel if you don't care about being 'stock' - maybe this will help.
Works using Siyah kernel.

A standard USB-HID keyboard works fine if it doesn't consume to much current.
Blue tooth mouse and keyboard works to you know.. Just sayin'
Actually its all depends on your USB otg cable. I have two but one doesn't work for mouse/keyboard but works only for pendrives. Another just work perfectly for pen drives and even mouse/keyboard. I am using stock 4.0.3 non rooted ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32244758&postcount=4
Your keyboard probably does work, but needs more ampere than the phone can deliver.
I just tested my Note 2 with a USB keyboard connected directly and it didn't work,
but when I connected a USB hub with external power, the keyboard worked fine.
What should I buy?a usb OTG cable or a MHL cable? What's the difference between the two?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
OTG cable is for connecting USB devices like mice or USB flash drives to your phone.
A MHL cable is for connecting your phone to a display with HDMI input like a TV or monitor.
So what you should buy really depends on what you want to use your cable for.

USB OTG

Hello guys I just want ask that what means usb otg?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda premium
Let me answer this question the last time, please link to this post if you see this question anywhere else...
USB OTG is a possibility to connect USB devices to the phone
USB OTG = hardware support + software support
our phone DOES NOT HAVE a hardware chip required for this so all kernel, ROM etc modifications are useless
we will never have USB OTG!
actually our chip can't direct power from the phone to the intended usb device, that's y usb OTG can't work on our phone
BUT a dedicated dev at xda has found a way to make it work for other chips that has our same problem through some tweaks and providing an external power supply for the usb devices
SO unless that dev starts working on our chip, we won't have OTG
for the original question, OTG : on the go i.e. u can blug a flash memory or a mouse or a keyboard (or wtvr u like) to ur phone through ur usb
press thanks if i help you

Lenovo A850+ OTG USB cable

Hello, i got cheap OTG USB cable and try to connect two different flash drives, keyboard and mouse without any success. Is there any option to start OTG function. on Lenovo A850+ ??. I try USB OTG Help and Stick Mount apps, but dosent help. I read that Lenovo A850+ support OTG. Thanks in advance for help.
If your tablet supports OTG USB, it should start automatically. At least that's how it is with Galaxy and Nexus tablets. I know that Lenovo usually has their own GUI on top of Android so wonder if they use some custom driver or need something to be enabled in system setting? You better off searching XDA or AndroidForums for your specific tablet to post in that section.
Also, make sure you have a working cable. Can you try it with another tablet or the phone, just to be sure?
