I am considering rooting my GT2 which is running ICS 4.0.4. If I root it, will the OS updates pushed down from Samsung still work? If i remove the preinstalled Samsung apps, will a upgrade work? Will a upgrade put the spps back?
Thanks. James

I was actually wondering this exact same thing. I've had an OTA for a while now, but it fails during updating every time. Do I have to unroot, update, then re-root the device? My only fear is I won't be able to unroot it with the same method after an update.

saw on a friends phone that a system software update to phone is available...He canceled and wanted to know if updating would cause loss of root or any other effect..
bump. i've actually been wondering about this myself. any help would be greatly appreciated!
yes, installing an OTA update will almost assuredly wipe out your root.
I'm rooted, tried to update ota and it goes through the motions like it's gonna work, then just stops and gives me the exclamation point! I think you have to unroot first. I just installed latest RUU and now I'm updated and rooted.
wouldnt the best security feature for sprint be to build the update in a way that wont update your phone if your rooted? is this already the case?
Hi, I'm really tired of all the custom software installed on my xplay that I don't use and would like to root my phone so I can get rid of it. My only fear is that I will have trouble updating to ICS once it is released.
I know I would be able to flash the ROM manually once it's posted here but I don't like relying on that, I'd prefer to do it the "official" way.
Is there a way to unroot your phone so you can use the vendor provided update method? If not, can someone explain to me the process of applying an official update to a rooted phone?
Thanks
Rooting the phone only adds a few files to the phone giving it root permissions.
I got my phone as 2.3.3 from rogers, rooted it. Then I updated it the official way to 2.3.4. It removed the root permissions, but it updated fine, then I just rooted it again.
You shouldn't have a problem.
And if all else fails, reflash back to the stock rom, then update.

Thanks! I'll give it a go
Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?
I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?
I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.
If there's no such binary installed on my note 2 and I have a software update is it safe to install it without having problems?
I have no idea what rooted means I bought phone like this. Help please. Thanks
It basically means you can install non-official software on the phone such as different, lighter versions (less bloated) of the official ROMs as well as some modifications to make the phone faster or more conservative when it comes to battery usage.

To answer, yes you can install without breaking anything. When updated you may lose root though, there are certain apps out there to help you maintain root with OTA updates if you are wanting to keep it. but more than likely since you are rooted you have a non-stock recovery image. So when the update says rebooting into recovery it will go to your recovery and not install. You will simply reboot your phone and the update notification will be gone.
Although software updates usually break root, the most recent update for note 2 doesn't seem to do that. But it's always smarter to assume it will and protect your root somehow.

Hello, this is my first android device, so I'm not too experienced with the whole rooting thing. My device is currently rooted with the original firmware that came on it. (Galaxy Tab S 10.5) not quite sure which version is on here or even where to find out. I tried to do an over the air update and it wouldn't let me because the device is rooted, but apparently there is a new firmware version out, so I definitely want to get on that.
How do I go about getting the latest firmware installed and getting my device rooted again?
Thanks!
How you rooted it the first time, just repeat the steps again.
Well to get an OTA as far as I know you will need to un-root and try the update, BUT if you rooted with Chainfire method probably is gona fail, because that method trips knox, and the update is going to fail.
If for whatever reason you can update, you might loose root and maybe the exploit that worked with your current build this time is not going to work.
To find out what build you have, go to settings>>>general>>about device and there it's
That's why once you root you have to block or deny the updates until the people here with more knowledge report that it's safe.

The build number says:
KOT49H.T800XXU1ANF8
I haven't tried it for marks but auto update via Kies should work. Even if rooted. Does not affect root. And does not factory reset. i. e. you get same effect as OTA.
