So I have stock 2.2... rooted.... and I removed verizon crapware.
I just got the notification that an update is ready for me? this is the one that contains the verizon app store... as well as I think a new kernel.
Is it safe to install? would it even install? If I did would I lose root?
You would loose root if it takes.
The update may fail depending on if it checks for stock apps. Not sure if this update will.

Well...since the root process also gives s-off... I'm a little confused about all of this. Shouldn't that let me get root back? and wouldn't the update fail since I don't have stock recovery?
Do I say install? Aaaaaigh
If you let it try to restart and install the update ClockworkMod will deny it, and the notification will go away for a while (either one day or one week, I can't remember).
I got the notification an hour or so ago on myn's warm twopointtwo.

Some one might be better able to explain root vs. S-OFF than I but ill give it a try.
Root is for your operating system. It's like in winblows having administrator privileges so you can execute high level commands, modify system settings, etc...
S-OFF allows for your phones bootloader (like a PCs BIOS) to flash unsigned files. So, if we do get an update that removes root, we can flash a custom recovery program, to then install a ROM that does have or can be rooted.
Do a backup. I don't think the update will install or stop bugging you to do it. You should be able to modify your build prop to stop the messages.

I'm rooted and have S-Off, standard 2.2 ROM.
I would like to apply this OTA when it arrives, mostly because I'm a developer and have posted a few apps into the VCast store. Need to confirm they are there.
So should I hold off on applying it, or assume I can just use Unrevoked to re-root after the OTA?

+1 for this, I just want to install this for the sake of being up-to-date. I need my precious root, though.

Why can't you look in the VCast store otherwise? If your phone is not the newest version then it won't have access to it?
Yeah... I would actually love to be able to install this... Especially since if I read correctly I would keep root.
As for the bloat, I can just remove it like the other bloat...

Mostly because I'd like to be able to check my vCast stats and comments from my phone, plus I think it's a good idea to be a user of the service if I'm selling apps on it.

We have several Dinc's here at work. The only phones to receive this update so far are the slcd incredibles. Amoled doesn't seem to be getting it. And there appears to be a side effect after the update is applied, if you had a bluetooth device connected you need to unpair and re-pair the device. People are noticing that the scrolling seems much faster after the update so I'm going out on a limb and assuming the update had something to do with updating the slcd drivers.
Also had an issue on one where the phone wouldn't boot up after the reboot until the battery was pulled out and put back in.

Mine is one of the originals (had it since day one) and I received the OTA... it just didn't take cause I'm rooted (guessing it has something to do with replacing the recovery with clockwork.
I'd love to know how to apply it in case it was more than just crapware (which I will uninstall since i'm rooted)

I'd like those bug fixes, but it's not worth losing root :/
So it looks like someone will need to grab the OTA update... and repackage it as an update.zip for clockwork
Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?
I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?
I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.
Hi everyone,
I rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2 a few months back with ODIN I believe. I have had superuser access and can wirelessly tether, increase volume, remove camera click etc.... Love it, all this on Android 4.1. I never flashed any custom rom, just rooted.
Now 4.3 is being pushed to my phone, is it safe to install it? what happen if I do, do I lose root, brick the phone etc? Or, does everything stay the same but now I have 4.3 and not 4.1
As a backup I have a Sprint Note 3 not even opened just in case things go wrong. I know volume is low on Note 3 so in advance any hacks for note 3?
But for now, focus s on the OTA for Sprint Galaxy note 2 and any adverse side effects of accepting the OTA
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
1. It is not safe to install official OTA to your rooted 4.1(only by Kies).
2. You will lose root or you will stay in bootloop.
3. Usually we flash custom rom using twrp(cwm) or ODIN.
Thank you!
I'm just wondering if it's safe to rollback the firmware on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5" to the previous one or if it causes some sort of conflict.
I want to do so because I've just installed the most recent one (T800ODD1ANK1 - India) and I can't root it using Cf-Autoroot posted here.
Thanks!

Nothing. I did it with Odin and it just reboots to the same old unrooted tablet. All is working fine as usual, but no root.
What botters me the most is that I had Xposed framework installed but now it has no functionality and all the modules I had installed don't work. I would install the previous firmware but I'm afraid of breaking something, with installing older software on top of newer one.
I was able to root the US version of that ROM (T800XXU1ANK1) using CF Auto Root from Chainfire:
http://download.chainfire.eu/473/CF...uto-Root-chagallwifi-chagallwifixx-smt800.zip
Perhaps give that a shot???
I will but the India version has a more recent changelist (which was the reason why I chose to install it).
Thanks in advance.
As I predicted, since the changelist is different (your version has the same as the older one I had, with functioning root, but not with this one), no root.
Does anyone know if it is safe to install a previous version of the software? Like, for example, Cellular South ANK1 (with an older changelist).
Thanks.

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. It says I am rooted, but I'm not because root checker just keeps spinning and there isn't a SU# icon in my apps. I've done this with Odin about a million times before, for some reason on my new T800 (after I updated the software), it doesn't work.
Am I missing a step because I have the same version you have? Extract the file. Load the md5 file into AP. Hit Start. Wait for it to reboot. Right?
Yea root isn't working for me with T800XXU1ANK1. =(
Im assuming you ran Super SU and updated the binaries or whatever it asks, or updated the app in playstore?
Ive done nothing different and root works fine.
I was thinking about another root alternative. I was thinking about downloading the supersu zip and save it to the device or sd card. Then flash twrp recovery with odin, then boot into recovery and flash the supersu zip to get root? Could that work as an alternative since it flashes root in the process?
I just rolled back to T800XXU1ANJ6 and I am rooted.
I just bought a Tab S, and I can't seem to find an answer to a question that relates to this thread. Is there any advantage to updating before rooting?
I can't decide if I should root it now or update the software, and then root. After searching some, it appears that it doesn't matter whether I upgrade or not, but I can't seem to find if there is any advantage to updating it then rooting. Like, is it easier to get the latest firmware that way?

If i am correct, There should be stock custom roms available that are prerooted so you can flash over. As for an ota update, that is faster than being rooted then flashing lollipop rom.
Anyway we have a lollipop rom already built. Its smooth and most things are working. Its really cool and id rather use this than waiting for samsung to get the latest update out. Do you have the 10.5 in or 8.4 inch?

So, you are saying update OTA then root, unless I want to jump to Lollipop (which I do), which in that case it doesn't matter so I should just root and flash a lollipop rom?
Thanks for helping me out.

Up to you If you want to jump to lollipop/CM12, just run flash Cfautoroot( with odin to root) then install twrp and flash the lollipop rom. There is a thread for cm12/lollipop in the development tab s section.
But wait! Rooting trips knox with voids your warranty. Same users has reported getting service from samsung for free of charge from defective units and some had to pay to get defective parts replaced by samsung. 50/50 chance. I took the risk and havent got a hardbrick or anything yet.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've rooted all 6 of my android phones that I've had, so I'm not too worried about voiding the watrranty. Judging by your reply it sounds like there are a lot of lemons out there for this device. Mine seems to be running okay, but I just can't take all the lag that I assume comes from TW and bloatware. My HTC One M8 with Lollipop seems faster and smoother than my Tab S at stock. Although after typing the last sentence, I put Nova on there and sped up all the animations and it is definitely light years faster than my One M8 now.
I think the answer to the original post is that the Su binary was installed, but the op didn't download then update Super su after rooting. You wont get full root until you do as there is no app to handle root requests.
I need some help and I've looked all over but the information is fragmented and there is too many unfamiliar acronyms used which make it incredibly difficult for some like myself to catch up. So for the benefit of others who may be new I wanted to get some additional guidance.
I got the Pixel XL Google Version
Objectives:
1. Root with the ability to hide root so other apps will work
2. Native Mobile Hotspot
3. The ability to easily receive android updates without having to reflash etc..
4. Stay close to stock if possible, but willing to explore other options as long as security is trusted, and has good
compatibility.
5. Security is a concern, I tried a rom in the past with a Galaxy S4 and swear it had a backdoor installed in the rom.
What do you guys recommend? And how do I go about doing it?
Thank you!
If security is truly a concern you will not unlock your bootloader and root your phone.
Otherwise it all depends on which version phone you have, Verizon or Google?
1. You need magisk root for that.
3. No updates when you are rooted
4.5. Never heard of any custom rom with a backdoor. That's absolutely bull****. More likely it was an app you installed.
Unlocked bootloader is a security issue, so better to stay on full stock.
Root is a big security issue so better stay on full stock.
Jokes aside the only security issue is your phone gets stolen or you install apps outside playstore.
If you stay encrypted and use a hard pattern with fingerprint you are fine and there is always the way to delete your phone when it gets stolen.

My point about security really was that it's quite possible a ROM could have a backdoor. That a side..
Root is not a big security issue for me as long as the rom is trusted etc..
Shouldn't I be able to turn root off then be able to update and turn it back on again?

It's possible to root to one slot with SuperSU while the other slot remains unrooted, and then the phone can be switched between slots with TWRP or fastboot commands. Kernels have been posted with safetynet patches, to hide that the bootloader is unlocked, but I'm not sure if any are available with the software version on my phone's current slot. As noted, Magisk can also hide root and that the bootloader is unlocked, so it's probably less hassle than trying to root and hide using SuperSU.

FlashFire can use the OTA to update and stay rooted with SuperSU. The past couple months I've used FlashFire to update my phone, and it seems quicker and easier than the sideloading and reinstalling process I had been using. I'm not aware of anything similar to FlashFire for Magisk users, so to me it seems like you would have to decide if 1 or 3 is more personally important.

While reading I got the impression that I might be able to uninstall SuperSU and use the OTA update, but that didn't work with SuperSU the times I tried it, so I presume something SuperSU changed or something I did with root must have caused the update to fail. I haven't read the Magisk threads as much, yet I've seen that other SuperSU users also indicate that OTA updates no longer worked for them after rooting the phone.

Wow thanks for the great reply! It's so refreshing!
What do you mean by root one slot?
The phone has two "slots" for Android. The basic idea is that you have two copies of Android on the phone that share the same user data. On a stock phone it's intended to allow for less noticeable updates, and it also can allow the phone to fall back to the previous software version if something goes wrong with an update. On the May update my phone did automatically switch between slots, due to what is discussed in the second link below. The first link below gives some information and additional links to discussion about the slots on these phones.

That's all I really need. What would be the best way to to do this?
