I lost my EMEI the other day and subsequently lost my 3/4g data. I restored a backup through CWM and then I noticed I lost it.
I did everything to get it back. I followed the steps on XDA using various tools to reinsert my EMEI, and then another to get my data connection back. Neither works. Then I unrooted to restore it back to factory.
Zip.
Finally I called tmobile and after doing everything they said (including a factory reset) they agreed to replace it. It took three days of dealing with them. On the second day the technician told me that this has been a big problem with the Galaxy SIII. He said it's been happening to all the carriers.
So maybe it has nothing to do with flashing after all....
Maybe EVERYBODY is flashing? EMEI or IMEI?

its a know issue. check out this thread for a possable fix.

It's IMEI, not EMEI
It has EVERYTHING to do with flashing.
This has been an issue with Samsung phones since the Nexus S (and the original Galaxy S phones as well I believe...I first experienced it on the Nexus S).
The difference is...is the international SGSIII and earlier phones were able to fix the issue by backing up the efs folder.
On the US (read dual core snapdragon) variants it is no longer contained there.
You need a different method of backup/restore. I believe the link posted above is the answer.

IMEI...yeah. every time I say that, I screw it up.
I was able to reinsert it, but it didn't bring back my data signal. I'll look at that link to see if it's different. Yeah when the guy told me it was happening to everyone, I was thinking that they haven't caught on to people flashing roms yet. However, years ago when I had many 3 g slide I sent it back for warranty with it still rooted and they never said a word. It still worked but the screen had a shadow under it.

Yea, they don't care if your phone is rooted or at least they never cared about any of my phones that were rooted. Before sending my rooted phone back to them for warranty replacement I did always make sure I loaded the stock Rom though. Tmobile doesn't care. They just throw the phone into a bin. Once the bin is filled with enough pbones, they put them into a box and send them back to Samsung.

Not necessarily I've seen customers who have been charged for being rooted, yet I have sent a phone that was rooted without being charged too with things that may not be obvious like physical damage or water damage its a gamble on how thorough tmobile decides to be when they inspect it stock rom and deleting super user is always a good idea.

Can someone please help me out here. I just got my SGS 2 for T-Mobile a few days ago, as I'm coming from a Sensation. The phone is rooted and I installed Juggernaut and after a few days my phone started to reboot constantly and say that network is unavailable. I would reboot into recovery and wipe and it restarted and same thing happened. I then began to reinstall ROM and it would work for a bit, then same thing would happen. I then formatted system, data, and reinstalled ROM, same problem. I then installed Beast ROM thinking it might be ROM, but same thing happened with this one. I have wiped over and over again and same problem. I got a new sim card and same thing. I re-rooted and same problems. I installed stock ROM, downloaded new stock ROM, upgraded modem, and same problems. I remove sd card, same problem. I am out of ideas and options so someone please assist me with this matter as I've never had this problem before.
Sounds like a faulty device. I'd take it back!

This was happening to my first SGS2 as well. It was within the 14 day buyers remorse thing from Tmobile and I was able to exchange it for a brand new one. Haven't had any issues since.

Well the problem with that is that I bought it off of someone. Everything had been working fine until I applied a custom ROM. I will continue to mess around with it to find a solution.

Well I think I got it working as it hasn't rebooted or lost signal today. I redid root, upgraded modem to new one, and reformatted sdcard. I rebooted the phone several times without problem, but I haven't tried wiping cache/dalvich as I'm kinda scared that this might cause some problems again but when I decide to I hope nothing happens.

Hey dude, let me offer you a bit of advice. Even if you bought the phone off some guy, you can still get Tmobile to send you a new one through the warranty.... just don't mention where you bought it from. What you have to do is log on to your Tmobile account and verify that under "My Device" it shows you using a GS2. This means their system shows you using that phone. Then contact their customer service through the chat, and just say that you are having a problem with the phone, blah blah blah. They shouldn't ask you where you bought it, and they should send you a new one with a return label to send this one back. Just make sure that it's stock and unrooted. Hope this helps.
Well I will be getting a replacement phone through warranty exchange afterall. Hopefully this new one works out well. Thanks everyone for ur input.

Ok, so I got a replacement phone and bought another one. I can root the phone and install roms, but no matter what rom I use, I always get no network available and constant reboots after a reboot. I have wiped completely, formated sd card and same problems. I have never had this happen on any previous phone. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions cuz I'm completely lost on what to do. :banghead:

Very similar experience yesterday for me. Zero data, it wont read any sim card. Getting my 3rd replacement within a week.
To those of you who may not have followed my previous thread, I recently had a problem with my Inc2 only being able to charge while turned off. I had to ask for a replacement under warranty, meaning the defective unit needs to be sent back. Long story short, I was able to restore the stock ROM on the defective one, but unable to restore the stock bootloader, meaning it is now on the stock ROM, but with S-off. Do you guys think whoever at Verizon is responsible for checking phones sent back under warranty will notice this or even care?

Of course it is possible they will see and care, but I think it is more than likely they will not notice or care. I have heard of many people returning phones (even back to my Eris days) with a stock ROM on an s-off device without a problem.
Good luck!

All they really look for is water and physical damage. There are so many launchers out there that they usually have no idea. Unless you get the guy who also roots and flashes. Then they usually just flash back to original. I still recommend to always restore your stock backup at the very least.

I am in the same boat - except mine is barely even charging when it's off and not charging at all on. My usb port on the phone is all screwed up - I cannot even mount it. I called verizon and they are sending a replacement. I have 5 days from when I get the replacement to return the old one.
I still had a backup of my original Verizon Rom so I flashed it (thank goodness I was able to do it with barely any battery).
All the processes to get S-ON back seem to require the USB port and a good amount of battery power. I have neither. I will keep searching but it looks like i will be sending it back with just the stock ROM and S-ON.
The agent said that they "need to verify that your phone has not had any physical or liquid damage. As this is not covered under the warranty. You will need to send back your defective phone to the warehouse."
So technically I do not have that kind of damage - I will report back the outcome - wish me luck!
Good luck!

Once you get your replacement, you can always use that to charge up the battery, swap it back into your broken phone and do what you can.
As far as the adb commands necessary to replace the boot loader, I don't think anyone had confirmed if this works or not, but you CAN initiate an adb connection over WiFi. There are apps on the market that'll switch between USB and WiFi for adb.
But it's probably not worth the hassle, just get a stock rom on it and they'll probably never notice.

So I got the replacement phone (s-on ) and, powered up the battery and used it on the old phone. I factory reset the phone but since it was rooted, I had "Superuser" in there as an app and couldn't remove it. That was the only thing that was giving me a little hesitation about sending it back.
Downloaded Terminal Emulator and manually removed superuser, did another factory reset and Superuser is gone. Have FastBoot checked on in the Settings so unless they actually go into the phone and change that, they won't boot into the bootloader or see the s-off revolutionary.
Phone is going in the mail today
Update:
Got a text message from Verizon yesterday: The defective device has been received by Verizon.
and no charge or any notice that it breached the warranty/contract!
USB issues as well unless I get the device at the correct angle. A pain, but used the directions and links from the youtube link to get my DInc2 back to stock and S-On. A pain to angle things right but worth it to me knowing I'm going in with no potential "threats".
Gotta wait the 3-5 days now...
EDIT::
In case people are wondering, my DInc2 was rooted using revolutionary method and it worked flawlessly.
I have a Telus S3 and I know I/we (S3 users) have to be responsible and backup our imei info in case a flashed ROM wipes that data (supposedly not common but a known issue)
I just bought my wife a Telus S2X (t989) off eBay and I'm rooting it for her (and flashing) when it gets in. I've searched these forums and haven't found anything specific about this being an issue on these models so I just wanted to ask if its possible.
We have a small process to back it up on the S3 but not even sure if that will work on this phone.

no need. for the gs2x/t989/skyrocket that issue is almost non existent. between the three phones over the past year I saw one instance only. even then, your phone has the sticker with the imei inside it under the battery

Thanks for the reply.
I know about the sticker behind the battery, the injecting of the imei is far worse than the backing up. Just wanted to make sure it isn't as common as on the gs3

Hey there,
I have been having some issues with my LGOG over the past month or so and I have just started to look into possible solutions.
I first noticed that screen rotation and proximity sensing seemed to be non-functional. I always had problems with screen rotation, but it basically stopped completely after I rooted/unlocked (using manuals on XDA and FreeGee app). I was stuck on ZV8 (couldn't upgrade because root) and figured that an updated ROM would solve my problem.
I have now updated to Lifeless v11 ROM and have found nearly every sensor (including light, sound, proximity, gyro, etc) to be non-responsive. I then thought this must be a kernel problem, so I tried flashing Joker's test kernel (from Aroma) and his Stockish 2.1.1 kernel. No dice. Additionally, I tried to do a sensor calibration and was given the message "Calibration failed. Try again".
I realize there is a possibility that this could be a hardware issue, but is there any other possibility I have overlooked? I have isolated some error messages in logcat, if that would help at all.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Seems like a defective phone. You should return under warranty.

Awesome, will do. Do you know if they will give me trouble for having messed around with things? I suppose I could always just restore my old backup I made with the stock ROM and re-lock the bootloader and unroot.
Do you think I need to go through that? Not that it's the end of the world.

Honestly I would just in case. Ya know? They could say you messed it up with whatever you did and whatnot.
Just for kicks and giggles.. What ROM are you on and what tweaks did you add?
Scratch that. Try reflashing the ROM after a system, cache, and dalvik cache whip. Very well could have been a bad flash. If that's not the case then clear, lock, and unroot.

Very cool, thanks for your great advice!
I was on Lifeless v.11. I tried your suggestion (wipe caches/system and reflash), but unfortunately no dice. I also tried rolling back to my stock backup and there is still no functionality. Seems like I have a broken unit. :/
I'm going to roll everything back as much as I can and cover my tracks so I can try and get a replacement this weekend. Hopefully they don't jerk me around too much in the process!
Thanks again, and have a good week(end).
EDIT:
BTW, I had installed all the tweaks that were installed with Lifeless (quite a comprehensive list). I thought that might be the issue as well, but seeing as how my stock backup is still giving me issues, it looks like it's strictly a hardware issue...
If you have insurance through Sprint you honestly should not need to worry about them knowing you had the phone rooted or anything. They asked me if I rooted the first android phone I had, but said they didn't care, they just had problems with reflashing rooted/unlocked versions of the phone before so were being safe. Now it's to the point where I just tell them I broke it lol. I took my LGOG in yesterday after a failed update/flash back to stock at work. Told him exactly what I did, they ordered me a new phone (New, not a refurb cuz they were on backorder ). I was actually able to get it fixed, and even let them know, and they said they already ordered it so I'll have a new phone on Monday either way lol.
I try to flash back to stock still, just in case that one day they decide to change policies without me knowing. But if I'm in a hurry I don't worry about it.

dont think you are gonna walk in and walk back out with a phone. the G is on backorder. I've been waiting on a replacement since the 16th and still nothing.
Just for future information:
I went into the Sprint Store this afternoon and found, just as others suggested, that they would need time to replace it. They kicker was that they told me that there was no way that I would get a new phone as a replacement. I could expect a refurbished model of unknown quality.
I finally found out that I could take up the issue with LG directly, so I opted to do so. They informed me that as long as there was no impact or water damage (which there isn't), they would do their best to either repair or replace the phone. The problem is that I have to pay to ship the phone to their Texas plant and then wait for up to a week while they repair the unit.
This isn't the best of circumstances, but I figure this might be the better solution. I will be taking photos before I send it to be sure that whatever I get back isn't a random refurb with cosmetic damage (mine is almost pristine).
I'll keep this thread posted with how everything goes.
Same problem

The issue you are having is probably why it was a refurb in the first place. I once bought a refurb CRT monitor. Not only did it have severe ghosting and a bad case of double images, but if you shook it, you could hear a loose screw flying around in there. That was a ViewSonic, and I will never do business with them again (that's not the only reason). It's blatantly obvious nobody bothered to test it. Just repackaged it and pushed it out the door. I will never ever accept refurbished items if I have a choice, or used electronics. Same difference.
You can try a factory reset and reflashing the firmware with Odin. But I suspect that it's a hardware problem that was never fixed when the original owner returned it. Pretty sure there is zero quality control anywhere these days.
