Verizon vs. 4G high traffic usage - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a question that perhaps others could answer. I am a high user of traffic on the 4G side, and have been experiencing lately extreme amounts of issues with connectivity. This includes throttling noise, and random resets of connections from the network. I haven't had any issue with signal quality, or tower being overloaded (the downgrade to 3g). The only issues as of lately are extremely low speeds on the downstream portion, slower than 300kbps.
After 3 tickets had been filed with Verizon to network technicians. They had all claimed a variety of problems. One being that the software was out of date. Second was that the area had signal degradation. Third was confirming the second persons opinion. However all three of these I proved to them were wrong. Firstly I have the latest software, as Samsung had repaired my device and updated everything, I have had also 4 replacement devices to test with. Also the signal degradation would apply to the entire connection, not just downstream as it is now. Also in the past I had perfect connection with 30Mbps down and up.
I am constantly told by Verizon reps that if I was being throttled I would be flagged and they could see it. Lately they have offered a few things, drop the contact with no penalty, replace the phone with a new 4g phone, or switch the device out again. I am at a loss with what to do, does anyone have any insight on Verizons practices with throttling?
What do you guys say about doing a test on Verizon's network to see if they throttle 4g connections that use excessive data?

They did say they would throttle those 5% but I have yet to see it happen but this only applies to unlimited plans

I have a bit of proof that, that would disagree with this. I have swapped out 4 devices, and have a few theories how they throttle. They do a daily poll on the highest usage devices on the router used for unlimited. They set those device ids to have last priority on QoS or they seem to cause some sort of digital noise to the connection. Because I've been experiencing severe data degradation on connections where the packets will come back with incorrect check sums and corrupt data. What do ?!

Just noticed my routes are changed when I experience the throttling, as well as port filtering. Sent a letter, have another network ticket out, technician said software out of date seems that they aren't issuing the IMM76Q to out area yet. The replacements they send me with the newest version experience lots of signal issues too. Anyone else have issues with 4g drop offs on the IMM76Q version?

There is nothing in the 'Q' version that touches the radios or telephony. It was merely an update to gimp local searches.
They are lying to you.

Not sure about this, I had 4 replacements devices sent to me with the new update. They all have authentication issues with the network now. The old version works perfectly. My older phone hasn't received the ota push yet either, so it could be a network issue too.
Also BIG NEWS, Verizon said they solved a network back-end problem, after my 4th trouble ticket had been put in. They did repairs on a LTE tower nearby, one of the directional antennas was defective. So far traffic has been more stable than before, however the degradation is still apparent. This could be a regional issue with the switching center, as most of the issues are a city-wide experience.
I put it another trouble ticket for the 4G issues that I and everyone else have. This included the voice channel over data corruption, and random connection drops from towers.

So I brought my E4TG in to be looked at.

I brought my phone to the Sprint repair store to have it looked at. I was having crappy data speeds and poor phone signal.
The tech took it and ran some tests, he said it failed the data speed test.
After 45 min he said he changed and separated the voice and data profiles. I asked if I was to reset the phone would the changes be gone. He said no it's done server side to the account. He said the only thing I might notice is a little lag when I push emails to the phone.
My phone signal does seem a little better and data seems a bit faster. My question is what he said make sense? Or did he just blow smoke up my ass to get me out of the store.
i would like to know this too...
updated PRL and Profile maybe? Settings/about phone/ system updates
Some things have to be done by Sprint on the server side.
check your underwear for smoke stains, bro...
Can resetting the data profile and so forth on their end improve/fix some provisioning/data issues?
Yes.
Is it going to fix the current problem with Sprint's data speeds and/or LOS?
Absolutely not.
LOS is a problem with the firmware on your phone.
Data speeds are a result of an aging network that cannot support the amount of data users are using. [Although with Sprint Network Vision that is changing]

I wasn't having LOS, it's was more crappy data speeds and low call signal strength. In my case I came from using the Epic 4g and where I lived I was getting 3-4 bars compared to none to 1 with the ET4G.
With my old phone my upload/download speed was twice of what I'm getting now.

I understand that, I only mentioned it so everyone was clear on that.
It's possible that a re-provisioning could improve your situation but it pretty much just sounds like your reception is just Samsung's crappy radio firmware.
You may want to take the device back to Sprint if the low radio reception continues and maybe they can swap it out.
The data end of it is just what I said above.
I know there are quite a few things that they can do server side (for example, your voicemail can become corrupted on their servers, which only they can reset. Long freaking process.) but this seems to just be a load of smoke.
Bars don't mean much from phone to phone, I've made calls and sent texts with no bars. I've also seen my phone side by side with other Sprint phones with mine showing 1-2 less bars but having the same dbm. Data speeds HOWEVER have just sucked since day 1, sometimes I'm lucky to be faster than dialup.

Hmm...I've been a sprint tech since June when I got hired, and I haven't heard of something like this yet. AFAIK, voice and data provisioning are already separate, using two independent programming menus. I'll ask my fellow techs tomorrow when I'm in if this is indeed something possible.
Keep in mind though, there are A LOT of internal tools/sites at our disposal, so many that even experienced techs are discovering them for the first time occasionally. They only cover so much in our training. Many are redundant (old tools that instead of being revamped with new features a new tool was released), but a lot of times they have one or two unique pieces of functionality that still make them useful.

Sprint Signal Strength

Do you have worse data signal reception (and use) with Sprint vs. Verizon indoors?
More often than not, inside a store or restaurant in an 'excellent coverage' area, Sprint's data network is not usable (connection timeouts) where as surfing on Verizon is no problem.
I suspect a combination of Sprint Rev A and possibly cell density / Sprint using lower signal strength.
I didn't get a lot of response in the top Networking thread, so I thought I would post with fellow Sprint/ Evo 4G users.
other sim thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501051
Hey,
It all comes down to you get what you pay for, sprint has amazing phones with ok at best service sorry if anyone takes offence but its true. When on big red you are paying a lot but you get good phones and strong service its just how it is sadly. Sometimes I have great data in stores others I dont it just depends on the cell tower and how the building is built, but like I said it just comes down to you get what you pay for!
Stevo
While you would think the signal would be similar, since both Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, it's not.
On sprint, there is a tower less than 2 blocks from my house. Outside I get full bars, but the second I step inside my house, I get knocked down to 1 bar. Using the Verizon PRL, I also get full bars outside, but when I step inside, I only lose one bar, and get 5/6 bars consistently. The same thing happens at a few restaurants around town, sprint gets 0 bars inside, but almost full bars as soon as I step outside, but with verizon, the signal stays the same in and out.
Thanks guys. This is exactly my issue. For some reason, in larger market cities, this is less of a problem.
I wish I could find a technical reason. There seems to be a discrepancy too in the quality of data signal with sprint's own towers.
And I don't buy in to the 'you get what you pay for'. My wife and I pay $1800 a year for 'unlimited everything and the first 4G network with enhanced devices that connect to high speed data'
I hope this isn't out of context but it seemed to be the most relavent thread for my issue.
Typically I haven't had many issues with my Sprint server (I'm in the Denver metro area) however over the last few days every call I get on the end voice is choppy, and eventually will cut out. When monitoring my signal it will jump from 3 or 5 bars to zero and then back up again.
I do have a rooted phone, however the ROM I'm using has the stock kernel and the most up to date radio.
I guess my question is, has anyone experienced any issues like this over the past few days? Is it possible that I'm having a hardware issue and need to un-root my phone and take it to the sprint store?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm not quite sure how to start the problem solving process. Thanks!

Thats a lot for that plan. I use to have and switched to the $70 one due to the fact that I barely call land lines anymore. You might want to look into the other plans to save some money.
Now as far as the signal problem...it really depends on the phone, freq, rom, area and the building. I dont have the problems that you have..in face ppl with vw have that problem around me.

Um, Lets see, Family unlimited plan with two Evos (+$20) - with a discount on the line. Use to be under $130/month, now it is at $146/month. So not sure what you are talking about regarding price.
Regarding your signal response, I was looking for something actually technical and informative.

Sounds about right Iride. We have a family unlimited plan here as well with an Evo and an iPhone 4s and I think we're somewhere in the $160 range with insurance and everything.
On the technical side I've posted a few times in other threads pertaining to the same issue but haven't heard back.
It seems my service is now only sporadic at home, but I can't confirm that fully just yet. I was downtown (Denver) using my phone yesterday and it seemed just fine, however when I returned home any call I made immediately had a sporadic choppy voice. This is strange to me as I've never had bad signal here until now. That's over 2+ years of living in this same apartment.
Maybe this is something on Sprint's end. This may be a silly question, but when calling for tech support, they can't tell if you've rooted your phone or not right? It would only be if you took it in to get serviced without unrooting?
Hope to figure out something soon...

Sprint Voice Issues in the RDU area

I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues like this in the RDU area.
When I go to make a call, whether it be to another mobile phone, or a landline phone that has caller waiting. I get a busy signal. This happens on Sprint networks and roaming networks. I can resolve the issue by either powering the phone off and turning the phone back on, or by putting the phone in airplane mode and then turning airplane mode off again.
Has anyone else run into this issue in the RDU area? Specifically near Apex, Cary, and Raleigh? Or is this issue specific to me? The issue persists between wipes, and flashes of the OTA files, so I am pretty sure it isn't a phone problem anymore.
It's network side.
I've been seeing a lot of service issues across NC in the systems, it's not just the RDU area. Winston and Charlotte markets are encountering this also.
I actually think that Sprint's either tweaking the towers or implementing Network Vision. When the tower closest to my store went down, it was hell. It just came back up the first of this week, but we've noticed that 3G is blazing fast now.

I really hope this is the case. I live close to Garner and the signal in and around southeast Wake County is almost unbearable. I have been tempted to look at other carriers, but I am giving Sprint a little more time, hoping they will come around. I travel all across NC for work too, and it seems like it has gotten much worse over the last 2-3 months.

I noticed i could only get 1x when i was on that side of town the other day Sunsparc. I actually saw this happen about a month or two around the tower thats by Harris Teeter and the Ymca. Hopefully they're updating all the salisbury towers.
I hope they get it worked out. The last week or so I've had more 1x signals than I've ever seen in places around Winston that are normally strong 3g areas. I was also surprised when I was in Raleigh last week that there was no 4g around the downtown area and the 3g was crap as well.

I just want to bump this and say this is STILL happening.
Called them up today and they said the only issue that they have been informed of is EVDO data issues.
So, I am stuck, because it is happening between wipes, Sprint says there isn't a problem, and I am not sure what else is going on.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Customer Care is going to tell you it's a device issue to get you off the phone. Go to your nearest repair location and ask them to put in a CTMS ticket for your phone. They should already be doing this for anyone complaining of signal issues where the device is found to not be at fault.

Yeah, so I attempted to do that today.
Went to the store, and they immediately told me that there was a tower outage, and they wouldn't pull my phone back and do any form of diagnostics. So, what I did was call up customer service, then explain to them what was going on and ask them to speak to a tech at the store.
After a while, they told me there were two tower outages, that were blocking 14% and 90% of calls, and then gave me the phone back and was told that the ETR was over the next two days.
To be honest, the techs there are not always the friendliest, especially the older one that works in the cary location, I have had the pleasure of dealing with him multiple times. Generally why I like to call more often than not.
As far as the CTMS ticket goes, is there any information that I should give them? I was given an ETR for one of the two towers that was told to me to be having issues.
Not sure if you can check, but they said Tower Number: RA74XC340 was experiencing issues.
Is this still a problem for anyone else? I have been having this issue happen continually.

question about throttling

If you are being throttled by tmobile, does the data icon change to whatever speed they are throttling you to? I.e 4g lte icon to edge icon or does it not change?
I know I am grandfathered into unlimited 4g yet I feel I am being throttled when I am watching long youtube videos. I am currently at 5.5gb and the hiccups are getting more noticeable and consistent.
If they throttle users due to overload on the towers then the icon may not change. This method is more like the QOS service on high end routers. To insure that each users can get service everybody gets slowdown. And despite that this is to insure that each user gets to use the service, there maybe some packet drops. Nothing is perfect.
Also our radios may show better signal than we maybe getting.
Also to create a strong connection further away from the towers both the device and towers may put more power on the signal strength than the bandwidth. In doing so bandwidth may suffer. This also may happen due to the power being used to service large amounts of users at any given time. Again in doing so bandwidth may suffer.
Remember that T-Mobile, like all service providers, reserved the right to limit your service if you prevent others from using their services.

[Q] Is there an NK2 radio in a .zip flashable format?

Has anyone made a zip for the new radio?
If I have time I will do it tonight. I'll post in in my rom thread. Just curious, why do you need the modem unless you haven't upgraded to NK2 via OTA or Odin tar?

Having issues at work. I get the 40+ Mbit B41, its just that for some reason it wants to kick over to 3G fairly often. I have to do a few PRL updates to get back on it. I understand the B41 tower is a little ways away but i know from owning the note 2 that they have the slower B25 in the area too as i used to get it all the time with out issue and my note 4 never seems to connect to it, only B41.
Sprint said they are going to monitor me and my area and send me an update in a few days. They also suggested i take the new update but i dont really dont want start over right now so trying just the radio.

Many including myself are having low LTE speeds. I have been going back and fourth with Sprint for three weeks now and am on my second Note 4 with the same issue.
I got elevated to a Senior Tech and he said that Samsung has said there is an issue with some N4's and Sprints LTE according to a log only he and those at his level has access to. He advised having Samsung reflash it. So I took it to a lcal repair facility after getting a service ticket from Samsung which also took a week of phone calls back and fourth. They reflashed it today and it still has the same problem. Near their facility I got 25Mbs.
At home however I only get .5 to 1Mbs and according to their coverage map aI am in SPARK heaven.
It's not your phone, it's Sprint. I've been dealing with the exact same thing for years. They keep sauing they're working on the network but I've seen faster data speeds on disposable prepaid flip phones. Your data speeds will depend on the tower you're connected to. I don't know what's taking so long for Sprint to get their network coverage and dats speeds consistent throughout a region but it hasn't happened yet from my experience. I get around 1mb download and anywhere from 250kbps to 500is on uploads. The speeds on LTE at my house aren't great but in other parts of town it works a lot better. I assume Sprint doesn't consider certain areas a "priority" on their upgrade list. So you can stop thinking it's your phone because I doubt very seriously that's the problem, I used to think the exact same thing and went through several device swaps with the same results. Sprint will give you the runaround and point the finger at anything and everything as well as claim they are working on the towers/network. Well they've been working on the towers around here since they introduced WiMax and the HTC EVO. Yes I've seen big improvements with data speeds and coverage but after this much time I expected a lot better data speeds. Like I said, Sprint doesn't consider some areas a priority and they don't do much to improve or upgrade in those places because it's not lucritive or cost effective due to the customer base in that given area. Now other places where you would expect very good service but only see 3G speeds on LTE, there's just no excuse for that because Sprint has had a LOT of time to get the network up to par with the likes of T-Mobile etc. It is what it is.

I follow S4GRU and they also indicate it is the towers that choose, which is frustrating esp. when it seemingly kicks to 3g as soon as i start streaming a video.
My issue is not data speeds (even B25 gives me upwards of 8Mbit which is pleanty for video streaming), its staying connected to LTE.
I at least want to have the new radios installed so i can tell them i have NK2. I want to follow their procees through and if i still have the problem staying connected to LTE then i want a monthly discount untill its fixed (which theyve given before when i was getting no 4G at all in my area.
I went to Sprint in 2010 for the EVO and the WiMax that was up in my area, but its been a long painful rollout of the LTE. The reasin I stay is the old unlimited everything plan i still have.
