Galaxy routinely crashes with stock and/or custom roms - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I can make my Galaxy S II 'crash on demand'. By that, I mean I can clearly reproduce a crash event by using the phone to do a certain thing.
Specifically, when I browse the timeline on the Facebook app - within about a minute my phone is guaranteed to crash. Screen goes black. And its off. Then I have to power it on again.
I've also noticed it crash in a few other places, such as while browsing the web.
Anyway, I'd like to find out why. Interestingly, even after flashing a totally different rom - the same problem occurs. And that includes a full Darkside Super Wipe. The phone has crashed like this ever since I got it, so whether its stock or a custom rom doesn't seem to matter.
Perhaps this means the issue is not file related, but rather a hardware issue? Bad memory maybe?
Any tips appreciated. The nice thing about this problem is I can try different solutions and quickly test by loading the Facebook app / crash scenario. So let me know what you would try !

Mine has a habit of doing this as well. Like you said, it happens both stock and custom. I don't use FB, so for me it happens randomly.

Out of curiosity, how often do you choose out apps running in the background? I've found that my phone will freeze & reboot if I have too many apps running in the background. Have you tried an app killing app?

My guess is it probably is hardware related. I tear computers apart all the time and fix them back up... When something like that is happening... Its usually hardware. I would install the stock rom onto it and try to return it if thats still possible. Good luck.

Are you browsing "full" versions of web pages or mobile?
Sometimes on full versions there are so much java scripts (like j Query) in use that Android browser cannot handle it and crashes due to memory leak or something . "Totally different rom" is still based on same web-kit used to run java scripts on a web page. Try to turn java script Off on that offensive pages and retry.

check for free space
close back ground apps
only use legit apps from Android Market
When restoring from Backup, do not restore system settings / system apps
Does it crash when you just browse the net, after a flesh install, without installing anything else in the phone
chances for Apps/data causing problem 99%
chances for hardware problem 1%

I had a problem like this but it wasn't my phone it was the browser, chome... using firefox now and it seems the problem is gone.

EVO HW003 Nova Random Reboot

My girlfriend's HW003 Nova EVO is in a state of random reboot. I have run out of ideas.
It is not OS dependent, meaning I have gone through 3 different ROMS including stock rooted.
There are 6 log files below. They are logcat files right before the phone kills the connection.
Knowing that the ROM is not the cause, I am down to Radio, WIMAX, GPS, WIFI, or CPU/MoBo.
I executed the gpsclrx command and it had no effect on the random reboots.
Is anyone else having the same issue? Have you exchanged your phone at a Sprint location? What have you done?

I have some random reboots as well, thought it was related to temp but after a while that seems to not be the case. Happens on every ROM and seems to happen 9/10 times when browsing. Stock Browser / Dolphin HD. Reason I thought it was a temp thing was I started noticing a light spot on the screen, evidently above the processor, and so I figured something had to be happening with it all.
Have been meaning to start calling around about it and see if it's something Sprint can replace or not. Am more than prepared to pay the deductible, but I haven't really made steps to get to the bottom of it.
It's strange because when I think I realize what is doing it, it ends up not really seeming to be the case. It all started happening when I had a bad wipe / flash (clockwork) and it started happening then. Lost my RSA Certs (not a huge thing, obviously something I'll need to address at some point but currently using CM6 so I'm not really "missing it." But that's when it all started happening. So I guess in that regard, the WiMax shouldn't necessarily be an issue ... or so I would think. Happens when on WiFi and off, happens whether GPS has even been turned on at any point or not so I figured it had to be some CPU issue but not necessarily due to heat.
Know this probably doesn't help, but I thought I'd post.
have you tried seeing if it reboots with out apps installed? not sure if she uses setcpu or other similar type apps that could cause issues. I used to get random reboots too especially when i would run certain apps while i was over clocked.
and this may be a stupid question if so sorry but you are wiping between roms and you are NOT restoring system settings from a back up after you do correct?
Exchange the phone?

Right, naturally that'd be the next step.
Have tried nearly all ROMs without app restoring or even downloading, including not restoring system data.

just curious what recovery are you using? Maybe u should try to wipe with a different recovery and flash a new rom.

If you have setcpu installed, I need you to go to the info tab, scroll down and tell me what value is next to memtotal. It should be 425000.
Let me know what yours is.

The reason why I was asking you to check the info tab for the memtotal value, is because on my phone, currently I am not having a problem and the value is 425000kB , but on my girlfriend's phone, it registers only 424840kB.

Alright, will look for the one on these boards.
Hate to even go here, but I really never used a logcat before; but my phone just rebooted and I went immediately into the logcat and just like when I launched it at first there is just a wealth of information. I see it says ;
D/alogcat ( 521): stopping ...
D/alogcat ( 521): resumed
Might sound dumb, but am I to assume that's the point the log stopped and began again, due to the reboot? Would think it is .... on to that setcpu I guess.
edit: seeing that stopping and resuming in multiple spaces, guess that's not it. =/

Alright. I need more people with HW003 Nova EVOs to check the same, and say if they are having reboots. This could be corrupted or bad memory.

i have hw 02 but my memtotal is 424832... does that matter?
I think this may be a HARDWARE issue...
Hello xda folks,
Long time reader, first time posting...
I'll try and condense this down, everytime I try to post something xda says I'm not logged in, so I'm keeping it short out of re-writing frustration.
I'm HW003, I lack setcpu, so I can't really check my memtotal, but I believe that in short the flash mem/nand memory may be getting damaged or corrupted by flashaholics like myself. I'm curious to see in any non-root users have experienced the completely random reboots like some of us here.
Let me be clear about one thing, I'm describing random rebooting, not consistent bootloops, at least they weren't at first.
Initially, I thought this problem was a byproduct of OC'ing, or overheating the unit, but I have flashed every combination of rom, kernel, OC/stock, hboot ver, etc, virtually anything I have some control over, and the phone still reboots. Ive even rolled back to stock unrooted, and tried bone stock 2.2 but the phone keeps throwing a fit.
Everything on this phone hardware wise screams "I was manufactured on the cheap, and put out to stores on the quick", so it stands to reason there is some kind of failure taking place.
I'm no expert, but I've flashed this thing A LOT. Probably around 100 times.
It also seems to be getting worse, as it often sticks in bootloops now, not just random reboots. Causing me to have to flash it on an even more arbitrary basis!
Next step for me, is rolling back to stock 2.2{Again}, and sending this bad boy back to where it came from, and wait for my POS replacement and its new set of shenanigans. I will root the new one once, pick one rom, and flash it once...
It will be difficult, but I will be attending Flashaholics Anonymous.
We can do this together.
Anyone have a more logical answer?

Strange problem

Dear friends,
I have problem with my Nexus. Sometimes it vibrates by itself, without any reason. I don't mind it but it is little bit annoying. What can it be? I am on JB + franco's kernel.
Thanks.

Check all software that issues notifications and make sure none is set to vibrate. Like Yahoo, Facebook, etc.
Also happening to me. I rebooted and it's ok for another few days then vibrate itself again... I don't care now XD
Checked all options and I am thinking that settings are good. I don't use any of social apps except Instagram and twicca. This is very strange and happens randomly.
Do you ever get asked to choose an app to open 'something' with? like email apps etc?
Also do you have a folder in your gallery with a load of screen shots?
This is usually cause by the automated bug report system.
you may have to wipe data and re-flash rom/kernel.
Yes, happens all the time. So this is rom fault? Should I just use rooted stock?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
This was happening all the time to me, on stock ICS and when I went to JB.. I am running my own build of CM10 and the issue has subsided.
Personally I Think a bad flash is to blame.
just try reflashing.. like i say i had this problem consistently and flashed many different roms with no resolution.. but now its fine very odd..
Like i say do a wipe and full flash/reinstall.
I found solution to my problem. You have to disable bug mailer. Just rename /system/bin/bugmailer.sh to bugmailer.sh.bak and you are good to go.

How do I diagnose random reboots for my Note 2?

For the past 4 days my Note 2 has randomly rebooted at least once a day. I wasn't using the device for most of the reboots and just noticed that it rebooted because of battery drops. I don't really know what could be the cause since I don't remember changing anything recently. Is there any way I can diagnose this without root?
How about just flash stock rom? If you dont have lots of apps which you've used, then it should take care of problem without needing titanium backup which needs root. Just save ur data using kies and flash stock rom from sammy.

I'm actually currently on stock and unrooted. I was just wondering if there were ways to find out what caused the reboot such as logs and such? Or if there was an app I could install to keep track of what causes a forced reboot?

You could download alogcat from the marketplace, its free and will save a log of what's going on with your phone.
It might help find out why its happening
for me it happens cause the power button is so easy to press while phone is in pocket.
keep it pressed for some seconds by accident and phone reboots. even if screen is locked.

If your rooted run a logcat and that will tell you what happened right before the reboot, reboots are usually a Kernel Panic meaning something caused a big enough problem that it couldn't be recovered and crashed the core of Androids software "The Kernel".
As others have noted flashing a stock rom ideally via ODIN and then testing your phone may let you know if you had bad software or a hardware issue. Custom roms can have bugs that will cause kernel panic a stock rom should be 100% fine and reboot free
I find mine will sometimes reboot after copying something to the clipboard.

I had reboots on my previous unrooted HTC EVO. The problem was an app. I was able to diagnose the problem by looking at my install/update log. Basically, I uninstalled all apps back to the date I knew it was stable and waited to verify it was stable. Then added back one app only and waited. Repeat. About a week later, I added an app that caused a reboot within hours. I uninstalled it and the phone remained stable.
Here's where I found a chronological listing. If you have multiple devices, it will show all apps for all devices (tablets, vizio, phones, etc)
Google Play> My Android Apps> at the bottom My Orders & Settings.
This gives you a cronilogical listing of app installs and updates.
Mine turned out to be a call recorder app that I had put on the phone 4 weeks previous.
Seems like a Samsung issue:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...-s3-crashing-when-copying-text-clipboard.html
I've got the same problem worth my note 2. At least I know I'm not alone.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
Bad SD cards are also a notorious source for spontaneous reboots. If you have one inserted, it should be easy enough to retract it for a while to test it. ..
Note'd too from my N7100...
I'm also experiencing this issue. I'm using 4.1.1 Brazilian stock ROM here.
Even before flashing CWM (yesterday) I as going through this problem. Most times it happens when the screen is off.
Maybe changing the stock Kernel to a custom one would solve this?

[Q] Galaxy S III behaving erratically...malware??

Hey all!
I haven't had much to post about my Galaxy SIII (Sprint) before till recently.
Lately I have noticed that the screen locks up. Doesn't really seem to correlate with what I am doing, but it just freezes. Sometimes I get a black screen if I start an app and sometimes it is when I pull down the notifications screen. I have seen this described before but no real suggestions on how to fix my device from freezing several times a day.
Today, The phone icon in my lower tray keeps disappearing.
Also, the phone dialed itself (the last number I called) and froze so I couldn't hang up the call! I had to do a battery pull!
Not sure what is going on with my phone, but it is time to call in the experts.
Could it be that I have some sort of malware? Is there even malware for androids? Do any of the programs work to remove it??
Any suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks all
Mike
AVG from Google Play works very well, and it's free, and it doesn't run in the background if you set it up that way. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=google+play+avg

Are you on a custom ROM, or rooted, do you have custom recovery if so which one? Can't really help you by what you posted. Unless you are downloading 3rd party apps that aren't from the play store its probably not malware. Here is a malware app to run though https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout

Yeah. +1 on this 100%. Google screens the majority of apps and they're constantly on the look out to make sure apps arent messing with your phone in a way that they shouldn't.
I've said this many times in many threads and I will say it again here.
The best anti-virus is an observant end-user. Just watch what apps you install and what permissions they ask for (for example a game app doesnt need access to your contacts) and you will be good.
So wait, I shouldn't install this file I found off of Google? It's filename is: "totally_not_a_virus.apk"
Sounds legit to me!
But yeah, to OP, it sounds like you might want to do a clean flash of your room and see if that helps.

S4 Chugs and Stutters After A Day. Must Reboot to Fix!

So, I have been having an issue where about after a day or two of my S4 kept on (no powering down or reboots) it starts to noticeably chug and slow down. I have experienced this issue on the stock TW ROM and the Google Experience ROM as well. I have tried to solve it by using apps such as Fast Reboot to free up RAM, but it does not seem to work. The only thing that solves it is a complete restart of my S4. I have seen a couple of other people mention this issue on other threads and I am wondering if anybody has pinned down the source of the problem and found a way to fix it or maybe there is an app out there that can automatically reboot my device once a day, so I don't have to do it manually.

You can configure Tasker (app) to auto restart your phone daily. If it were happening to me to, I would odin flash back to stock and re-root to see if it continues. Either way, good luck
Thanks, dude. Will try out Tasker. This even happened to me before I rooted, so I might just stick with Tasker for the time being.

For anyone else looking for an app that auto reboots you device there is an app actually called Auto Reboot and it automatically reboots your device once a day at a time that you designate. It requires root and is free.

I think there's a bad app or something you're using. My S4 has gone +20 days straight without a reboot
