Now that we have a few ROMs that have functioning settings for Nav Bar, as well as a great MOD Here, I thought it would be helpful to provide the simple steps for disabling the capacitive buttons on our GSIII's. It's a very simple process.
1) Open Root Explorer (or equivalent "Root" Browser)
2) Tap "System" (must be rooted)
- For ES File Explorer: Tap Menu > Settings > Scroll Down to "Path Settings" > Tap Up to Root > Scroll Down to "Root Settings" > Tap Root Explorer > Allow Super User permissions > Tap Mount File System -- All these things must be done; otherwise you won't be able to reach the system folder
3) Tap "usr" > "keylayout"
4) Long Press on "sec_touchkey.kl"
5) Tap "Open in Text Editor"
6) Delete everything in here
7) Reboot
Don't worry...this file is automatically backed up upon backing out of the text editor - you'll see "sec_touchkey.kl.bak" in the "keylayout" folder and you can simply delete the "sec_touchkey.kl" file that's empty now, and erase the ".bak" from the backup to restore functionality after a reboot.
**NOTE** This does NOT disable the capacitive button backlights - that's a different can of worms that isn't a simple file manipulation process, at least not that I've found yet - somebody that knows otherwise let me know and I'll update the OP.
Enjoy!

There's also a nice mod HERE that will allow you to use a "Pie" functionality, like the new browser allows in the lab settings, or a complex assortment of gestures that could replace the need for capacitive buttons. Check it out, I use it just as a supplement because sometimes it's handier to not reach down to even the nav bar buttons.

What do you mean? I actually just use the "pie" feature so I can't really provide a lot of support for the gesture functionality. His thread is well run, and thorough - check there, surely will give you the answers you need.

Did you ever get it figured out Eltrutgnik?
I use a custom rom and I don't have such file...
EDIT
Never mind...
Is there any way to hotswap between capacitive buttons enables/disabled?
Alot of times I hand the pgone to people to take photos w/ camera app and they invariably hit the back capacitive button not realizing it's even there (smh iphone users).
Thanks in advance for any insight/thoughts.

Glad you got it figured out...I use pretty much stock android based roms and I've always found it there. I love turning on the onscreen buttons and getting the capacitive out of the way :good:

Not 'hotswap' per se...but I bet, with some ingenuity and an app called Tasker you could pull it off. Don't ask me to step you through the tasker process though, the functionality is there, but it's an advanced procedure that I don't have experience with. Here's a Video that talks through the process of having tasker follow specific "step-by-step" commands, that you could set up to make this change on the press of a button. It won't be as cut and dried as his example, but, like I said, the functionality is there.
Hope this helps!
Great idea. I have the app so will dig into it this weekend and will report back any success. Thanks for the thought.

I didn't find a thread dedicated to customizing your lockscreen, tought it might be a good idea to post a quick how-to in case some people didn't know about this yet. I've gotten a lot of help from this community so I wanted to give something back, even if it's something small
So the Widgetlocker app allows you to modify your lockscreen, you can add app shortcuts, widgets, sliders, actions, change the background and a bunch of other stuff.
1. Download the Widgetlocker app.
2. Open the app, get into the "tool mode" (tutorial has a good explanation on the different modes).
3. Long press on the screen and there you can choose to add a custom slider, application shortcut or widget.
4. For custom sliders chose ICS theme to make it look like stock, then long press and click edit. You can add up to 4 different actions/shortcuts/applications.
Here are some screenshots of mine, nothing fancy, just 2 extra sliders with 4 apps each. Added flashlight and sound toggle to the default slider and weather widget below the clock.

Nice work, thanks for sharing.
When I was looking at reviews of this app on the Market, I noticed some people complaining on battery drain, have you experienced that, or any other negative side effects of using Widgetlocker?

Haven't experienced any battery drain so far. The app was a bit quirky at first but checking the "Root Helper" option in advanced settings and disabling the default lockscreen helps a lot.
Good info for those who don't know about it, gabster21. As an addition, there's eleventy billion (no, really, there's so many that they had to create a new index on Google Docs) WidgetLocker themes in this thread, with support from the dev here. BTW the dev is the always-awesome and responsive [email protected], who is responsible for Nova Launcher, which even in beta whoops the stock launcher's butt, so if you haven't already, be sure to thank hi as well as gabster21 and zHk3R.

I had a look at those earlier but forgot to add that to the first post.. done it now, thanks!
Another cool feature, useful for advanced users (especially those with root): If you go into WL's settings menu and hold the volume-down button for a couple seconds, you get an additional menu of "experimental" settings. But as the title says, they really are experimental, which means they're unsupported and may not work or even break functionality.
When the ICS slider is at the bottom it expands very small, much smaller than the stock bubble (where the selections sit). But when the slider is moved up from the bottom of the grid it expands all the way, giving a longer travel from the center before a toggle is selected. Does anyone know why this is?
EDIT: I would delete this if I could figure out how. The circle expands less because I had a shortcut on the bottom which would get cut off if it expanded more.
Hello droids
I completely forgot how to customize the maingrid of the app.
In my previous setup i had clock, battery % and (eventually) battery status charging (like gabster21 lockscreen)
I need phosphoreus, but how to config again in this way?
Thanks
Ok for now i solved by an experimental function (hold down volume button in settings menu) but i would know still how i did that customization in the maingrid...

Hey guys,
Is there any way to remove those ugly notification bar toggle buttons? They're just a bit too big and therefore consume way too much space!
I've always used something like extended controls and have had all the toggles on the homescreen itself, which makes the toggle buttons redundant and unnecessary clutter. I've never had the need to toggle anything on and off while within an app... besides, going back to home and coming back to the app can be done in a jiffy anyways.
I'd be grateful if somebody could direct me to an existing mod, or if one of the great Devs here could brew something like that. I would more than be willing to help them out and buy them a beer (or few) in appreciation of their hard work and time, and to show my gratitude
Thanks.
This is what my current homescreen on my HOX looks like:

So no need for the toggle to take up any extra space in the notification bar. It honestly looks like a complete mess right now on the Note 2 and a major eyesore!
Hello! I would also like to contribute a beer or coffee at the possibility of removing the switches.

I tried to remove it by making height 0, try it if works.
If you flash using CWM/TWRP this will make copy of existing file to root directory of SD card, in case it doesn't work and you want to revert it.
I will try to see it works! Thank you![

thats the Rom i tried but it does not like what it described
It is sooooo simple once you know how, and I'll teach you right now.
use the dialer and press the button to check email.
then look in the logs of the dialer and add the number that was dialed to your contacts as message
then, do this:
1. Long press on an empty space on your homescreen
2. Select “Shortcuts”
3. Select “Direct dial”
4. Select Contact you wish to have as a direct dial - that would be "Message" or whatever you named that contact
To add a direct dial shortcut on a device running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich):
1. Press the main app drawer icon (middle icon in system tray)
2. Scroll to “Widgets” folder (on the right) until you reach the “Direct Dial” widget
3. Press and hold the “Direct dial” widget until you see the home screen grid
4. Release the direct dial widget wherever you’d like your widget (shortcut) to appear on the home screen
5. Once you release the widget (shortcut) it will pull up your Contacts list
6. Select Contact you wish to have as a direct dial
You do not have to do both. Just one of the sets, depending on your ROM version.
Good Luck & Aloha!
thanks
but hmm actually did u see the screen shot at the last pic?

Then it's even simpler...
longpress on the homescreen and select add shortcuts
at the next screen, select Applications
Then just scroll to the messaging application of your choice...... it would be messaging if you had not installed any thing like chomp or whatever.
That's all, but you will not be able to change the icon on the dialer to go to something other than whatever is programmed in the dialer app itself... Which for all the roms I've seen, its Voicemail Messages.
Here is the only one I can find and it has the msg button you want.
you can easily have it pushed to your phone for nstallation by clicking on the link, and when the screen changes to the playstore site, click on the install box on the top left.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acts29.SmartDial&hl=en
I presume you don't read Korean so when you open the app, there will be 2 check boxes on the right side, just below the midpoint of the screen. check both and press the yes on the bottom of the screen This is the EULA for the app.
When the app opens, you can press settings on the top right and tap the Language setting down arrow and select English
There are a bunch of options you can choose or not to have enabled..
The app is free, so if you don't like it, uninstall, and no loss....
If you want to just do it from the phone, go to market, and search for Smartdial
You will see 2. Pick the one with (Dialer)
you should be good to go.
With this app, no matter what ROM you use or choose in the future, it will have your msg button!
Hope it solves your quest!
Aloha!
thanks
hmm but lol still kinda not what i want sorry
good idea though
just wondering how to custom the dialer app now :s
Does anyone know if there is a patch or app or mod that will allow the use of the Flashlight torch via the volume or home buttons on the phone. For example I would like to be able to turn the flashlight on by clicking the volume up and down at the same time or double tapping the home button. Some how turn the light on without having to unlock the phone and navigate to a widget.
Bump
I've used an older app on another handset called "button remapper". It literally does just that, but I'm not sure if it'll knock out the buttons original function all together or just allow both functions to run depending on the current state of use you're in.

Thanks everyone for your responses.
I've heard that other ROM's had this feature, I was just wondering if there was a way to install the feature manually apart from a ROM as I'm currently running the Jedi X17 ROM and it does not have this feature.
I will have to check out button remapper.

Any ideas for how to remap the buttons on 4.1.2? I'd like to be able to do a long home button press on the lock screen for the torch and a double tap when unlocked for Google Voice Search rather than SVoice.

My D710 is driving me insane with the phantom menu button. Its so bad my search button has been going off at random too. This of course only happens when I am sending text messages, or receiving them. Which makes it extremely frustrating.
I know there's ways to disable these buttons. I do not have my phone rooted, and would rather not root it right now. I am still fighting sprint to replacing it with a different brand, but they insist on repairing it over and over again. If I root it, that will just give them ammo to deny my claims.
Is there anyway to disable the buttons on a bone stock GB27 setup?? Thanks in advance.
If you hold down the menu key. Search will pop up. So your search key is fine. The menu phantom press triggers a "hold" on the menu key at time thus, search pops up. There's a thread someone in the general forum that "fixes" the problem with the menu key.
EDIT: Unfortunately, the file to remap the keys are at system level, so rooting is the only way. You can temporary root, however.

No, if i hold my menu button down... nothing happens. But if i hit the search bar, search pops up.
I am having phantom menu & search buttons. My phone has a mind of its own whenever data is being transfered over the network. My daughters D710 does not act nearly as bad as mine does. Her's does phantom menu every now and then, but mine phantom menu & phantom searches EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless i am at the sprint store of course.
Anyhow, I understand now that its not possible without root. When you say temporary root, does that mean just root, do the mod & then return to stock? Or is there some other method of temporary rooting?
Hmm.. On stock the way the keys are for me are the way I explained.
Anyway. When finishing running the exploit, you reboot, once the phone is booted, you'll have root. Once you finish editing the file, reboot. Once booted, root is gone. There's an app called frama-root for our device that let's you temp root if I remember correctly.

I sent my phone to Samsung twice for warranty repairs. They replaced the screen first, then when I sent it back they replaced the PBA. The problem never got any better, so I took it to my local sprint store where the tech was well aware of the issue. He replaced my screen (again) and it seems like the problem has gotten worse.
I will take a look at the tutorial you linked and see if i can make this work. Does that tutorial require me to root my device?
Yup, you'll need to be rooted.

Great, so I followed the guide and Disabled the softkeys, then enabled the Navbar. Seems like that took care of it, so far I have had 0 phantom keypresses.
I hate giving up screen space for the navbar. Especially when only the Menu button is at fault. Is there anyway to disable JUST the menu button, and leave the Home, back & search keys?
Thanks again for the help guys.
This method is for the power button, but I'm sure you could remap the menu button too-http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=796092
