I'm having the same issue. My wife and I got matching Galaxy S3s on Black Friday. Mine has been flawless, but hers does this on a daily basis. Just before the 30 days, we exchanged it for a new one (that came with a later ATT release). Same problem.
I had rooted mine the day I got it, so I tried rooting hers and put Holo launcher on it (just like mine). Then I wiped cache, dalvik, and fixed permissions. I also went through her contacts and deleted quite a few older ones (but I have three times as many contacts as she does. )This seemed to work for about a week. Then contacts started crashing again every few days. Now it's every day again. Usually requires a reboot. Clearing cache on contacts and contacts storage does not help at all.
She keeps asking when she can go back to an iphone because of this issue. Any ideas?
To review: Things that DID NOT WORK:
Clear contacts cache
Clear contacts storage cache
Reduce number of Google contacts
Clear cach partition
Clear Dalvik cache
Fix Permissions

Hmm... Are you sure it's not something that is attempting to sync with your contacts that is causing the crash?

Bad flash.
Wipe everything, format system, and do a clean flash.
That should fix it

I'd be inclined to agree with you except that it happened right out of the box, with two different phones.

I just had this happen out of nowhere on a clean install of CM9. I've looked around a bit and this seems to be occurring on stock, rooted, and flashed phones of all different types. I'd say it's some kind of ICS issue that hasn't been investigated enough to get a clear solution.
It's also strange that the issue was not occurring when I created my Nandroid, but even after wiping data/etc and then doing a clean reflash if I restore that Nandroid the issue starts happening.

Gmail app won't send email even after clearing data

I was having some problems with androids built in a2sd feature. Formatting and running a disk check seems to have fixed it.
This morning, I noticed my emails weren't getting marked read and emails weren't going out. I cleared data and cache in the gmail app. It marks emails as read but still won't send. I did a nandroid backup, still same problem. I installed fresh still had the problem...data wiped the app but no luck. Anything else I can try? I'm on myns warm two point two.

Had this issue a week ago; It was due to Gmail.apk residing in both /system/app and on my EXT3 partition (both were different versions)
i had this problem. i fan a fix permissions through rom manager. that didn't fix it (although it's a good idea to do it once in awhile) I went to settings > applications > manage applications > Gmail and I clicked Clear Data. started gmail back up, it had to re-log into gmail which only took a couple seconds. the email I was trying to send was no longer trying to send. I re-typed it, hit send and voila! it sent.
hope this helps.
I think it did have to do with 2 versions of gmail installing on the phone. That or there's something in my titanium backup that a2sd doesn't like. I just restored a few apps, no data, and that seems to have fixed it.

Had the same problem, clearing the data and re-signing in helped for me, too.

CDMA one V not receiving text messages

Hi all, first post, I searched and searched and couldn't find anything, so I'm making a new post.
Ever since about a day ago, I haven't been getting sms messages. people have been saying they've been trying to text me all day, and I just sent myself a text thru email using @vmobl.com and I haven't gotten any texts. I used to get this problem with my old Optimus V on Virgin as well, and the way I would fix it is turning it off and removing the battery and all the texts would appear when I started the phone back up, but obviously the one v doesn't have a removable battery, so I can't quite do that. My notification light is going off, but the only thing I have in my notifications is voicemail, and it's never blinked for me before for that
I've tried restarting, turning it off and leaving it for 5 minutes, cycling airplane mode, and booting into cwm and erasing cache. It's a CDMA Virgin Mobile phone, running shubhamchamaria's non-sense ROM v1.1 I use ChompSMS for my main client, but I also have the AOSP messaging client installed which came with the ROM.
I'm probably going to make a nandroid and return to factory settings and see if that works, but I want to know if there's anything else I can try. Thanks!
EDIT: see final reply, I got the problem fixed by reflashing my nandroid of the factory settings, after that I flashed a new rom and texting still works. Thanks for reading everyone
hmm, i had that happen to me before but it fixed the problem after i cleared the cache. i have no idea if it will make a difference, but try Go SMS Pro...? i'm skeptical that it's the text app, though.

Thanks for the suggestions, clearing the cache didn't work, I cleared dalvik and regular caches, but still not getting messages. I did try GoSMS, but that didn't help either, I'm gonna try restoring to factory settings and see if that helps
I restored my phone to factory settings and it started receiving texts again, I've since flashed the paranoid android rom and it's still working just fine, thanks for reading everyone!

[Q] Flashed CM10 - No notifications now?

After flashing CM10 onto my phone yesterday (first time ever flashing), I started playing around with it, and I really like it!
However, I'm not getting notifications from apps any more (ie. email, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit News, etc). It works for some things, like SMS notifications, but that's about it. I have to manually check everything now, which kinda ruins the point of having notifications at all. Anyone know a fix?

wipe cache in the apps themselves (the ones you arent getting notifications in). i would wipe the data for those apps too. understand that will clear whatever settings you have in each app and you will have to set them back up.
settings > apps > select the app and the clear data and cache
I've already tried that and uninstalling/reinstalling them. I still don't get notifications.

hmmm. did you try wiping cache and dalvik in recovery?
did you use titanium backup to make a backup of your apps and then restore them?
did you perform a full wipe (including system) when you flashed this ROM?
Yes, yes, and yes.

i've heard of nothing but problems restoring apps through titanium. thats why i asked.
you may have to full wipe, reflash rom/gapps and manually install/setup apps. read around a little first in case someone on the internet has a better solution.
But the thing is, even the apps that I uninstalled and reinstalled are having the same problem, so it doesn't really make sense that Titanium would be the problem.

Note 4 Clear Cache

My wife is going from an iPhone 5S to the Note 4. She wanted to bring all of her messages with her so I backed them up. All of them. All 38,684 of them. Then I tried to restore them to the Note 4. That's where the problem began. Nothing I do at this point will clear out those messages. I have uninstalled Google Messages. I have opened the stock messenger app and cleared the data and cache. I've "Turned Off" the stock app and turned it back on.
Every time I re-install Google Messages it says "restoring messages" as if they had been backed up someplace. I'm not sure but this is DRIVING ME NUTS! I don't want to have to do a FDR on a device that we've had 6 hours.
Does anyone know how to either boot in and wipe the cache or fix my problem???
Google messages as in hangouts?
No Google Messenger. Sorry I typed the wrong thing.

so what did you back the text messages and MMS messages up with. My other question is why are you using Google Messenger? If they are on the phone, isn't that where you wanted them to begin with?
Please elaborate what you used to get them off the iphone and what you used to import those on your Android Device. Have you experimented where you deleted one out of messenger and and see if it comes back? I need to know what you used. Thanks

I followed this method. I used iSMS2Droid then I used SMS Backup & Restore.
Yes, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Google Messenger. I've cleared it's data and cache. I've used the stock app. I've cleared it's data and cache. Regardless of how many times I clear the apps data and cache, once it is re-installed or re-enabled, the messages ALWAYS come back. I uninstalled SMS Backup & Restore, and they still come back.
The good news is we figured out that it takes SEVERAL hours to restore 38,000+ text messages. Just by leaving the phone alone for those hours while we slept it got much better. However, it's there a way to boot into recovery and clear the Note 4's cache?
Also, why do these things keep coming back? The file that I downloaded is a .xml file and I'm certain that the SMS apps aren't restoring from there. Just very frustrating.

Post 8.0 Update Dialer Issues

So i got my update two days ago, on VZW. Ever since, everytime i recieve a phone call, it will not show the contact name, just the phone number. I've cleared cache and data for every app possibly related, (all three phone apps and services, messenger, contacts, contacts storage, etc.). I'm kind of at a loss on how to proceed from here. I tried poking around in the bootloader for a clear cache option but couldn't find one, I found a thread about the pixel not having one either and supposedly it's due to the a/b partitioning. Any advice on what to try next would be appreciated.
