My wife is going from an iPhone 5S to the Note 4. She wanted to bring all of her messages with her so I backed them up. All of them. All 38,684 of them. Then I tried to restore them to the Note 4. That's where the problem began. Nothing I do at this point will clear out those messages. I have uninstalled Google Messages. I have opened the stock messenger app and cleared the data and cache. I've "Turned Off" the stock app and turned it back on.
Every time I re-install Google Messages it says "restoring messages" as if they had been backed up someplace. I'm not sure but this is DRIVING ME NUTS! I don't want to have to do a FDR on a device that we've had 6 hours.
Does anyone know how to either boot in and wipe the cache or fix my problem???
Google messages as in hangouts?
No Google Messenger. Sorry I typed the wrong thing.

so what did you back the text messages and MMS messages up with. My other question is why are you using Google Messenger? If they are on the phone, isn't that where you wanted them to begin with?
Please elaborate what you used to get them off the iphone and what you used to import those on your Android Device. Have you experimented where you deleted one out of messenger and and see if it comes back? I need to know what you used. Thanks

I followed this method. I used iSMS2Droid then I used SMS Backup & Restore.
Yes, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Google Messenger. I've cleared it's data and cache. I've used the stock app. I've cleared it's data and cache. Regardless of how many times I clear the apps data and cache, once it is re-installed or re-enabled, the messages ALWAYS come back. I uninstalled SMS Backup & Restore, and they still come back.
The good news is we figured out that it takes SEVERAL hours to restore 38,000+ text messages. Just by leaving the phone alone for those hours while we slept it got much better. However, it's there a way to boot into recovery and clear the Note 4's cache?
Also, why do these things keep coming back? The file that I downloaded is a .xml file and I'm certain that the SMS apps aren't restoring from there. Just very frustrating.

Feel free to call me a noob, but here's my deal:
I used unrevoked3 to root my evo. I'm still using the stock ROM. I DLed ROM Manager (Free) just to see what it was about. I clicked on the "Fix Permissions" Utility and let it run its course. Now when I open my text messages, none of my linked contacts' pictures show up with the texts, including my own. Anyone know how to fix this?
Did you go into accounts and sync and re-sync your contacts?
Yeah, I tried that. The only progress I've had was after updating PRL and profile, my gf's picture has returned, but no one else nor mine has returned with it.
So, after syncing and re-syncing I've got 7 out of 22 contacts that I have open text threads with that show their linked photo still not including my own photo. Under All Contacts in People all 22 people are showing their photos as well as my photo on my info card. Why would it show in people but not in messages?
I had this problem at one point. I wiped something to fix it...I think all I had to wipe was the messaging data, but I can't remember. Wipe till it works.
Of course, you will lose messages this way. There is an import/export tool on the market somewhere that might let your preserve them.

Got a tip from a friend to reset my FB account(remove and re-add) and within a few minutes all was right in the world. Thank you guys for the help though.
Has anyone been having issues with their Gmail not sending emails?
I have tried to send emails but I keep getting the "sending..." notification in the email header.
The syncing icon in the taskbar just keeps spinning.
Ive tried to reboot the phone, etc.
Nothing.
I"m on Caulkin's ROM.
This is really frustrating as I use my phone for work as well and it delays my response times to important Clients.
Thanks!
Yeah experimented that a couple of weeks a go and dont know what of the 3 things I did was the one that worked:
1)Go to settings/Applications/Manage Applications in there go where the gmail app is (Downloaded or All) and clear the app data
2)If it have been updated in the market search for it in your apps in the market app ...uninstall it and reinstall
3)The last option is to use Root Explorer to go to system/apps delete the gmail app there and from other source paste another copy of the gmail app
Hope it works

I had the same issue on a stock rom (rooted). Turned out it was an app called Seal that was the culprit.
I learned that whenever I restore a backup, I have the clear data in Gmail or I get the same issue.
Not sure if it's the same cause for yours but clear data and send a test email. Pm me after, I'm interested to see if this works

Yup.
That's exactly what did it for me.
I went from UnNamed over to Caulkins last week and did a Titianium restore of my app+data.
Cleared the data in Applications>Gmail. That did the trick.

Haha that Seal is a ***** I had that happen to me as well
Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

I'd post this in a more relevant location, but y'know. Not allowed unless I spam the forum for post-count. Oh well.
First off, I'm using the latest nightly of this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050948
Despite the thread title, it's now running Android 4.3.1, CM10.2, PA 3.99-RC2, AOKP jb-mr2, if any of that is important.
Next thing to mention, I have no cell/data service of any kind. Everything is strictly wifi only. Using two google voice numbers setup on the built-in sip/internet calling.
So here we go. Wiped my phone completely, installed above rom, and latest gapps, as usual. Installed a few basics(Swiftkey, Titanium, Tasker) and the installed Google Voice. Opened Voice+, selected my account. The native messaging app will now happily send SMS using google voice. So will any 3rd-party sms app I've tried(Go SMS, Handcent, etc.) My problem is, I set Google Voice to receive messages via the native app. Send myself an sms from another number, I get nothing. Changed Google Voice settings back to receiving sms via itself(the google voice app). Again, send myself a text... nothing. Until I manually open the google voice app. Then it does it's little refresh business, and bam. Up pops my text messages(within that app only). I've checked everything. Any auto-sync setting and background data settings that I can find are turned on. Wifi connection is active and internet works.
I just can't figure this out. Ideally I would like to receive my messages via the native app or handcent, but at this point it would be nice if I could get them at all, without having to manually open the google voice app to see if any decide to pop up. Was also hoping to stick with this rom, as it's the only I see with those latest versions I mentioned above. Particularly I wanted to use Voice+ rather than the extremely buggy and overpriced apps for integrating google voice sms.
Anyone know what's going on here, or how to fix it? Not really sure what other info to include, so I'm sorry if I've missed something important.
P.S. If my grammar sucks or I seems to be typing up half a thought, it's because it's 5am and I have been at this for many hours now.

Do you have you're phones sync on...might make a difference...since you're using WiFi.
Besides that..I would wipe cache of the app..if still buggy..wipe data and cache of the app...and reboot recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache...you might even uninstall the app before the recovery wipes of cache and dalvik..then reinstall and set up...
Sorry I'm not more helpful..I don't use that set up...but I bet somebody with more experience will chime in here soon...

Yep, sync is turned on in every place I could find a setting for it. As for the other stuff, I've tried wiping cache and whatnot. I also wiped the entire phone several times and tried different roms. The one I mentioned above, the Dirty Unicorns rom, and now I'm on the official CM10.1.
*EDIT* Well this is embarrassing. And kind of confusing. Just for the sake of thoroughness, I went into my router's settings, and lessened the security to low, as well as turned on UPnP. Reset my phone's wifi, and now everything syncs instantly, including gvoice text messages. So now I have to wonder, what exactly was the problem. Is there a port that needs to be open on my router, does anyone know? Also, I'm wondering what that means when I want to use my phone in places with free wifi, like McDonald's or coffee shops. As I said, I'm strictly wifi here. Any input would be appreciated, but I guess my issue is semi-solved. Just wish I didn't have to lower my network security just to use my phone.
Maybe someone can answer 2 questions for me.
First-- I used the data cable to download all the information from my previous phones. All of my contacts are there but for some reason in Messenger it will just show the persons number instead of contact name. No idea why. I am going into each contact and saving their contact again to see if it will take, sometimes it does, some times it doesnt.
Second-- In messenger.....someone please tell me I can remove these stupid large colored letter next to each message? I have been through setting and advanced and do not see an option.
My phone is having the same issue of not connecting my contacts to the messager app. I also used the cable to transfer.
The other issue, I always give pictures to the people in my contacts so it shows pictures instead of letters however the first issue is messing that up lol
So I went to Settings>storage>cache data>clear cache data and then I went to apps>messager>storage>clear data and it fixed both these problems for me. Hope that helps.
If you clear data on messenger doesn't that erase all messages?

It didn't erase mine. Maybe backup with a app first before if you want to make sure.
Update. I cleared both, which fixed it but it does erase. Google auto backup ftw
Mine did that the first time I went into Messenger but I exited and went back in and it started updating the threads with names and pictures.
Thanks that's worked for me!
Clearing the messenger data work for me. Thanks!!
