How do I turn email sync off where when I open the email app I can check for it manually? I tried to do it like I have on previous phones which were by HTC. The only option is saw turns it off completely and I can't refresh to check for new emails unless it's on but then it's automatically gonna check for it which is what I don't want

The new update seems pretty good, except facebook......
I can not figure out how to just use the facebook app without automatically syncing all my contacts/pictures etc.
I can remove the accounts (yes automatic 2 accounts in the sync menu) but then there is no facebook at all.
when I just use the normal facebook app, the other account pops up again..
then it asks for my permission, witch I don't want to give (that option is there).
So when I give permission that I don't want to sync my contacts an pics.
I get the message every time again that there is something wrong with the syncing with facebook..
I need ROOT fast, so I can delete this stupid facebook ****

You should be able to turn it of in contact settings. There you can choose wish phonebooks to use. Same in calender.
I can't find any settings, too. Neither in the "SE settings", nor in the apps using the FB integration.

I can only uncheck the whole sync, not separate ones. :/
Edit: Found it. I had "auto sync" turned off, so there weren't any checkboxes to deselect specific syncs, of course. ^^
Thanks, i will prove
Facebook privacy
The new integration in 2.3.3. update looks very good on paper but:
When I want to enable sync it gives me a webpage that wants access to just about anything from me and my friends on facebook. The list goes on and on. from access to my friends list to being able to send me emails and post messages on my wall and access to all my photo's
Why do they need access to all this privacy related stuff.
I choose to NOT give permission and therefore I can not use the facebook integration, too bad but it keeps asking me to give permission every time even when I have switched off the sync on the facebook account.
are more people having this issue?
Yeah... I know what you mean... I did grumpily just give it the access.
Photos -> Gallery
Post on Wall -> Like-Button
Friends List -> update Contacts
Email -> ???
Shame that you can't deselect them seperately.
How do I get the contacts type in normally in a HTC Desire, over sow they is on my newly created Gmail account?
What?

Right, now that we have cleared that up, go to...
Settings > Accounts & Sync > Add Account > Follow Prompts. If you have already added the account, just go Accounts & Sync > Sync All.
Somehow my email (POP3) accounts have been changed from sync to disabled in settings. If I go to settings, accounts, email, all email accounts show sync disabled. If I click on the sync icon my only choice is to manually sync the account.
If I go to email, settings, for each account, sync email is checked and there is an appropriate sync schedule selected.
I find the email is not being checked per schedule, it is acting disabled as it shows in settings and only checks if I manually checked it. It was working properly at some time in the last week or so.
Obviously I must have changed something to cause this, but I can't figure out how to fix it.
Any ideas?

When in the email app, settings, per account, above the just 'sync email' button, under ''days to sync,' is it set to automatic? Also the inbox check frequency, make sure its not set on 'never'.

I do not see those settings. I go to email, settings, account, 1st section is common settings, then data usage, then sync settings. In sync settings only thing is sync schedule. I that are the settings for peak, off peak, etc. Am I looking in the wrong place because I can't find what you're referring to.
Note: this is a non-rooted phone running stock JB received OTA.
I've had problems with stock JB phones and enabling Exchange sync (yeah, it's not POP3, but I wonder if it's the same issue?)
Try this: Settings > Data usage > (Hit the Menu button / Action bar [the vertical ... thing]) > make sure "Restrict background data" is UNCHECKED and Auto sync data is CHECKED.

Restrict background data is unchecked, but auto sync data is not. I am checking it now. Hopefully that will do the trick. I'll report back.

Thank you so much -- that did it! I couldn't find the setting I needed.
Glad to hear it!
From my experience, these settings are set by certain carriers or phone mfgs on JB ROMs (I've seen it mostly on Verizon devices though), since you said you did an OTA, that's probably what changed it. Apparently they want to prevent people from using data or something

It wasn't the OTA that broke it. I did the OTA immediately before setting anything up and the email sync was definitely working then. Something since then (maybe something I installed?) caused.
Oh well, at least its fixed now and I now know where to look for the setting.
thank you so much, this worked for me,,,, after fixing these settings, I was able to go back to the email client, and fix those settings and everything worked,,, God bless you
This has started happening to me this weekend and I've no idea why... I've had to turn on email syncing 3 times.

The option is in Data Usage..... Thanks for the right answer!
(I'm still learning the recent Jelly-Bean upgrade. Some things are easier to find, but then some things that Were easy to find are Now buried in three layers of onion.)

Hi all
I realise this is not specific to the new nexus 7, but I have the old one and am about to buy the new one and was looking on how I turn off auto sync on the apps.
I seem to remember a menu where you could select sync or no sync for the apps but can't find anything in any menu on 4.3.
Anyone know how to do this? As I know I will want to turn of the sync on most apps to help battery life on my new nexus
Thanks all
Chris

Thanks for reply, that's not the one I remember though. For example how do you turn sync off for Facebook, Twitter etc?
Settings->Apps. Select the App in question and uncheck Show Notifications.

If you have apps syncs linked then you should see 'Facebook, Twitter' listed under
Settings > Accounts and just untick each one.
I'm getting more confused, when I go into settings accounts both Facebook and Twitter are listed like you say but there is no tick box.
For example if I then click on facebook it says sync is off touch to sync now, I press it and it syncs once but no where do I get the option to turn sync on again.

Okay, don't worry it is quite confusing in 4.3.
For Twitter: Under Accounts > Twitter> Click your Twitter username > Tick the box to turn sync on and untick to put sync off.
For Facebook:Under Accounts > Facebook> You should see 'Contacts' tick to turn sync on and untick to turn it off.
If you want push notifications off then this needs to be done 'in-app'.

so I have a work calendar that I keep track of for work and helps get me through my day. I have it currently set up as an exchange syncing only the calendar option checked off. It works without a hitch, however when I goto my mail app (stock) when I choose combined view it will automatically start downloading the emails to my phone. I cant get rid of the emails I have to remove the account and re add, however this issue repeats itself every time I start up the mail app in combined view.
anyone know a way around this ?
What happens if you uncheck this email account sync in the Mail App Account Settings.
Mail App > Settings > Accounts > Account settings > Accounts & sync.
If this doesn't work, you could set the "Update schedule" to "Manual" and "Message size limit" to "Headers only"

Ive already had email sync unchecked, I only have calendar checked to sync. I have just tried setting the update schedule to "Manual" but once I select combined inbox it will auto re-download the email messages from that account.

Same situation here. I couldn't find a solution, so I got used to ignoring them. Probably not the solution you're after but I'm interested if anybody else finds a work around.
couldn't you guys use any other mail client?
true, that would be an option. Any good third party email clients worth considering ?

I don't use it myself but some people like K9 Email client. Team Blackout has themed it too. I'm sure you should be able to find one that suits you there are so many on the Play Store.
I am currently trying Bluemail. I've used Maildroid, it's good. I haven't tried Cloudmagic yet.
