The new update seems pretty good, except facebook......
I can not figure out how to just use the facebook app without automatically syncing all my contacts/pictures etc.
I can remove the accounts (yes automatic 2 accounts in the sync menu) but then there is no facebook at all.
when I just use the normal facebook app, the other account pops up again..
then it asks for my permission, witch I don't want to give (that option is there).
So when I give permission that I don't want to sync my contacts an pics.
I get the message every time again that there is something wrong with the syncing with facebook..
I need ROOT fast, so I can delete this stupid facebook ****

You should be able to turn it of in contact settings. There you can choose wish phonebooks to use. Same in calender.
I can't find any settings, too. Neither in the "SE settings", nor in the apps using the FB integration.
Settings / account and uncheck "contact" sync in Facebook

I can only uncheck the whole sync, not separate ones. :/
Edit: Found it. I had "auto sync" turned off, so there weren't any checkboxes to deselect specific syncs, of course. ^^
Thanks, i will prove
Facebook privacy
The new integration in 2.3.3. update looks very good on paper but:
When I want to enable sync it gives me a webpage that wants access to just about anything from me and my friends on facebook. The list goes on and on. from access to my friends list to being able to send me emails and post messages on my wall and access to all my photo's
Why do they need access to all this privacy related stuff.
I choose to NOT give permission and therefore I can not use the facebook integration, too bad but it keeps asking me to give permission every time even when I have switched off the sync on the facebook account.
are more people having this issue?
Yeah... I know what you mean... I did grumpily just give it the access.
Photos -> Gallery
Post on Wall -> Like-Button
Friends List -> update Contacts
Email -> ???
Shame that you can't deselect them seperately.

I want to try using the Mail app instead of the GMail one, but is it actually possible to disable the GMail app without losing all the other functionality you get from logging into your Google account? - there seems to be a unified log in used by GMaps as well, for example. And when I try to remove the account in settings, it says I have to do a factory reset, this seems bonkers to me.
I couldn't manage to get my Google Mail account to sign into the Mail app...

Turn off sync for Gmail under Settings->Accounts & sync.
You might also want to switch of notifications in the Gmail app too.
Regards,
Dave
Will the phone sync google mail contacts via imap on the mail app or do I need to stick to the gmail app for that?

I think you must have a different version from mine. I have
Settings - Accounts& Sync
Background Data (tickbox)
AutoSync (tickbox)
Manage Accounts
Google
Stocks
Weather
If I tick Google I get a new screen:
Sync calendar
Sync contacts
Sync Google Mail
Sync Picassa Web Albums
(These all just trigger a sync)
At the bottom there are 2 buttons, Sync Now and Remove Account.
If I try remove account a box pops up warning that it will delete all the data, I say OK, then another box that says it can't do it, I have to factory reset because it is required by some applications.
I have been using the Google Mail app since I've had my phone, but today came across a problem - I could not copy & paste a tracking # from an email. I then quickly set up my gmail in the Mail app, & was able to perform this action very easily.
So my question is: has anyone used both apps extensively, & could they give me a quick "pro's & cons"?

Here you go someone has already done that:

The only thing that really annoys me is the fact that your Mail widget does not update the list of emails unless you open the Mail application.
Even if you already updated the email list in your GMail appl.
For example: I receive an email. I get a notification in the notification bar. I open it and it takes me to the Gmail appl (by default). I check my emails, read them, exit the application.
However, my HTCMail Widget (sitting on the desktop) does not show any updates. I have to open the HTCMail manually, sync (again!) and only then can I see the updated list.
Aaaargh!
I've been tempted to move to using the mail application over the gmail one as well.
I think ill setup the mail application with my other gmail account then compare the 2
I much prefer the gmail app. I think its quicker and easier to reply, and it syncs straight away unlike the mail app.
Only downside is the lack of widget, but with the number of apps I have on my homescreens, this isn't an issue.
I always feel it's worth mentioning k9mail at this point, if only because it supports IMAP IDLE.
I transferred all my contacts from my old phone which was fine, when setting up facebook I think I must have selected sync facebook data with my phone.
So now in my list when I hit the phone key I have alot of facebook people that I dont even talk to anymore which I dont want in my phone list, is there a way to delete these?
Figured out the problem for anyone who is interested.
Go to settings - sync & accounts - facebook - remove account - click ok
Restart phone
Add the Widget for friend stream, resetup facebook account, quickly go into the account settings and stop the contacts sync!
Done.
In people-menu-view you should be able to select which contacts and their details you would like to see
yeah and you can select 'only show contact with number' there
BUT
a lot of idiot people fill in their number field on Facebroke with random nonsense which carries through to the phone.
Its a real real shame there isn't a decent contact manager.
I was spoilt on my c905 with MyPhoneExplorer which gave me full wysiwyg control of my phone, on my computer.
Android is great, but its far from perfect.
Luckily I found it wasnt too difficult to sort out, now I have no issues.

Won't this just stall it and repeat later when your phone does a sync...
I have the HTC Desire with Android 2.2
I have linked it with my facebook account, but I do not want to have access to all the phonenumbers that people put on facebook.
I have managed to disable them in the contacts (dont remember how).
However when I want to send a text message, I enter the name in the receipient box and the box comes up with suggestions of names, it still includes contacts from facebook. Even contacts that are unlinked and unrelated to anything on the phone. I really do not want that.
Is it possible to get rid of this, to not use phonenumbers from facebook at all?
I think it's not, because i can't remember any other settings which would include contacts....
Try ChompSms or HandyCent app if you can disable them directly in the app.
I tried CompSms, and the same deal applies
On another note, I really like chompsms, so thanks for pointing me to that at least.
hi, first post - i think this may work for you.
make sure you aint syncing facebook account in "account and sync" and try deselecting facebook from the view opption in the people app.
sorry just checked my device and have the same issue as you, i guess it cant be removed. I can only suggest grouping? maybe?
only way I know of is deleting the facebook sync.
after this: apps -> contacts memory-> delete
and then sync it again (where you got your normal contacts from)
and don't forget to backup your contacts beforehands ^^
Hi, with my stock ROM i was able to synchronize contacts from Facebook. I moved to GigenVillain and I'm not able to do this anymore. Is it because of non-Sense ROM ? Do you think it will come anytime soon ?
Thanks
No it's just you. Sense masked it more easy, for noobs basically whereas native Android is more advanced shall we say.
Anyway, to sync contacts install the Facebook app and sign into the app. When it asks you to sync pick an option and it will sync your contacts just fine. If it doesn't sync to a contact, edit the contact your want then press menu, join and select a Facebook contact so it can join with your regular contacts.
Its just more or less the same as sense but like I said, sense is designed for noobs.
Sent from CM7
I tried this but facebook doesnt even sync the contacts to my phone.
i had this problem when making my own rom. i found if i left facebook app in the rom, i could add it to the sync menu. if i removed it, then when in the sync menu, i would press facebook but nothing would happen and it wouldnt appear in the contacts either.
hope this helps
Well if Facebook isn't syncing then it's a problem with either Facebook or your phone or something not contacting Facebook. Something along those lines. Just uninstall it then install it again but wipe the data in Settings > Applications first. See if that works. If not then go to Settings > Accounts and Sync and see if you can do anything in there once Facebook is installed.
Hello,
I'm not sure if this a HTC One X specific problem, but I didn't have it on my old Samsung Galaxy. If I open the preinstalled (I guess official) Facebook app on the HTC One X, it asks me what I want to sync. I don't want to sync anything, so I choose that option an press "done". However, the stupid things still keeps syncing all my Facebook friends to my phone contacts (it adds a Facebook phone book). I don't want this. If I delete the Facebook account under "Accounts & Sync" the synced data is removed, however, if I open the Facebook app after that, it will ask me again what I want to sync and the whole things starts over. Is there any way to avoid this?
Many thanks.
It'll add the friends but it won't sync them to your existing phone contacts. Just untick the Facebook contacts in 'People' and they won't show up
But there is now way of not even allowing it to import the Facebook phone book?
Well, yeah - telling it not to sync should do that...if it doesn't then I'd say no
I had the same problem and fixed it with removing that annoying app forever ...
