Group SMS - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Am I just doing it wrong, or does sending an SMS to a group of people just not work the way you would expect? When I send an SMS to a group of people (using GO SMS or the default app), each person's reply comes in on it's own thread, and there is no way for a person to reply to all. Recipients also cannot tell who all the initial message was sent to.
TMO has a group SMS app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zipwhip.zipgroups.sidekick, and I know people that use it, and it seems to work, but when I install it on my SGS3, it never works (it errors out when "setting up the phone"). It seems this app is only for the SIdekick??? Why it is specific to a single phone is beyond me. I have also seen other apps that work, but they all require everyone to use the same app (WhatsApp, for instance).
There is a setting for MMS Group Chat in GO SMS, but it doesn't seem to do anything for organizing a thread for multiple recipients. In fact, I'm not sure what it does.

Stock messaging app doesn't do group. It sends them separately to each so when they reply you get separate replies. But go SMS pro fully supports group chats. Been using it for quite a while now. Below are the settings you need to check.

Thanks. I have tried those settings, but it didn't seem to work. I think the 3 minute message grouping is what is messing things up for me. I don't always get replies within 3 minutes. I guess I will mess with it some more.

Hmm..Im not sure then. I used Go SMS Pro for my Evo 3d as well and with those settings I never had any issue. Even if the replies are hours later.

And can a recipient hit reply and will the replies go to everyone, or just me?

It'll go to the group chat thread assuming their phone supports it. Its like being in a chat room. Everyone can see everyone's reply in one thread.
But if their phone doesn't support it then it will send separately

I've use" groupme" from the play store. Worked well for me, you can set it up to where they deliver and receive texts thru SMS rather than the app, the people you text with don't need the app or a smart phone.

When they reply to your text do you get individual responses or does it get combined into 1 thread? Can it also be used as your main messaging app even for individual messages or this is only specific for doing group messages?

Well the way I set it up
I get them thru SMS, and yea its like a chat room type, if any one reply to it, every one on the group you created gets it, and no I don't use it as a main app, I use it to create groups and that's it's,I like using the replies thru SMS , I shut the app notifications off

[Q] SMS over 160 Characters fail to send on EVO 4G

Hello,
HTC EVO 4G running Cyanogen 7.0.3.1 latest release. Will not send messages over 160 characters. Now, I know sms split can solve this problem, but I don't want my texts to be split. I want it to be sent as one long message. Please don't tell me that CDMA does not allow this (like Ive seen in some threads while searching for a solution), because this is not true. This problem has nothing to do with CDMA, I know millions of people using the same phone from the same provider without having this issue. Is there a fix for this.
While we're at at it, ever since I flashed cyanogen, GPS doesn't work, any fix?
Thanks for the help
Are you using a 3rd party app for messaging?

Well if you know millions that can , ask one of them and let us all know. .. Wow he knows a million people.
You need to sms split or get somthing like handcent that will convert messages over 160 to a mms message
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
No I am not using a third party sms application.
Thank you but I do not want to split messages!
And Ive asked many people with the same phone, it works fine for them, but they don't know how? they're just not having the problem, what benefit would asking them be.
the SMS limit might not be a CDMA thing but it could possibly be a Sprint enforced rule. splitting messages isn't too bad especially since you have that option in CM7.
you need to reset your GPS for it to work. but that can be done two ways.
download GPS Status app and choose reset GPS in the settings (i never tried this)
OR (i did this)
(1) get MSL reader from market and copy down the MSL for your phone
(2) flash back to any Sense ROM, type in ##GPSCLRX# in the dialer
You will be asked to enter your MSL and then the phone should reboot.
after rebooting test to make sure your GPS works in sense and then immediately flash over to CM7.

No text message is over 160 characters. GSM carriers automatically split, then put-back-together long messages. Sprint, and every other CDMA carrier, doesn't do this automatically. Instead, the stock HTC software itself automatically splits, and puts back together split messages that it sees coming in (it's pretty easy to tell a message is split when five messages from the same number come in within 2ms of each other).
CyanogenMod had this added by 7.0.3 (if not 7.0.2) for all CDMA devices, where it would automatically split the messages. Don't know about putting them together, as I just use Google Voice for everything, because IT WORKS.
I do have mine limited to 90 characters and automatically converts to MMS once it exceeded that number. I dont want to use a third party sms program for it provides you two sms notification every time you receive a message. Does rooting solve this problem? Any option on getting it on its regular sms(160 characters). I tried using a third party keyboard input like smart keyboard but it did not fix the issu of 90 characters
Help please!
No, this has to do with the way the SMS messages are actually parsed before sending
You can only fix it if the rom itself has it, rooting wont do any good
But on the 100% stock rom it splits it already? Gosms, handcent, and chompsms give you this function, in case you rethink not wanting to use a 3rd party function
Sent from my PG06100
Before I rooted my evo 4g, it split my messages on its own. When I rooted it, I had to use a third party sms to do so.

[Q] AfterMarket Text App for Samsung Epic4G Touch problem

Is there a work-around for using a 3rd part text app (go sms pro) on the samsung epic 4g so that it does not interfere with the voice mail app on the phone?

"out doing"???? what are you talking about???
I'll try to be more specific;
IF i install go sms pro (3rd party text app) and someone leaves me a voice mail message, I do not get the message. I receive a text from spring telling me to call a number......
i contact sprint tech support. i was told that the voice mail app on the phone will not work with a 3rd party text app. somehow, they are linked. once i removed the go sms app, i received my voice mail messages....
sorry i was not clearer....

damn. i even work for sprint and had NO idea that go sms was the culprit. me, my girlfriend, and 5 other customers all had the same thing. i just switched us all to google voice. it works great! give handcent a try and let us know, but if you prefer go, i can always help you set up GV
Go sms works just don't override the other notifications when you install. Uninstall reinstall then disable stock notification.

It definitely works for go sms. You just have to make sure you're not allowing the over ride when installing. I say give it a go sms again

EUREKA!!Got it. After installing the app, go to the app --> advance settings --> Notification Settings and make certain that the box for "Enable notifications" is UNCHECKED. Problem solved!
I have been using GO SMS PRO and I tell you the thing rocks with absolutely no problems. I am using it in my EPI 4G Touch with no problems.
I downloaded Handcent toady and play with it a bit but in my opinion it cna not compare.
The only thing I noticed with GO SMS is that when you attached a picture to your text if you use the GO option instead off the MMS option some people might not be able to see it.
i'm using go sms pro also. it's far better than handcent.
It is messing with the voicemail because you have the default messaging app checked. Uncheck and you should be golden.

Remove text messaging limit

How do you remove the error message "A large number of text messages are being sent. Press OK to continue or Cancel to stop"
Is this gone with custom ROMs (I'm on stock). This is really frustrating and coded really poorly. I have to send a text message, WAIT, and if I click anywhere other than "OK" it auto-cancels my message. I have to repeat this for every text message until my rate of texting slows down. Aarrrggghhhhh Google!!!!!!!
Surely this must be the 1000th thread on this but I just spent an hour searching on my phone and couldn't find a definitive solution. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is completely different than what the OP is having troubles with.
To my knowledge none of the custom ROMs have removed the built-in limit on sending text message rate.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Ah so the custom ROMs dont' have this problem? How do I turn it off on stock? Drives me crazy.
You'll only be able to override this limit if you can build your own
version of the Android platform with updated settings built-in, or can
get root access to the devices you're using in the field.
Either way, you can alter the SMS rate-limiting as follows:
# sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
settings.db
To increase the number of SMS messages allowed per period:
sqlite> INSERT INTO gservices (name, value) VALUES
('sms_outgoing_check_max_count', 101);
Or, more simply, to remove the period check altogether:
sqlite> INSERT INTO gservices (name, value) VALUES
('sms_outgoing_check_interval_ms', 0);
However, I'd be more inclined to find a way to not send so many SMS
messages (assuming you can't simple use a data connection). Surely
you can batch multiple answers into a handful of SMS messages? If
it's a simple multiple choice questionnaire, then you could even fit
the entire session into a single SMS.
Anyway, hopefully that helps.
Regards,
Chris

I've never used Message+ before, but it's the default messaging app. Is it a good app, or another crappy verizon bloat app?
I love Handcent.
Even let's you back up sms and mms separately to the cloud. And restore. Without root.

You could call it a bloat app with actual functionality. With Message+ you can send texts on wifi (no Verizon signal) and from other devices (Mac/PC, Android/iOS tablet, other phone) and have it sync on your phone. I use it as my default because its the only multi-device texting app that doesn't need your phone to be on in order to send messages as they are sent directly through Verizon.
I absolutely love textra. nothing pulled me from 8sms for over a year until I found textra.

I just find that 3rd party apps don't run as "smoothly" as built in messaging apps. Maybe it's just my mindset idk lol..
I use it on my WiFi only tablet. Works good. Aside from that I use stock.
I use Samsungs message app. I am a little irritated that took quick reply and the detailed lockscreen info away. Along with other little things like the ability to change folder colors. Annoying, but nice phone
I use Verizon Message + to restore all my messages and then I revert to using the included Android app. I've tried many of the third party apps, but I hate hate hate the advertising and I feel they are generally slower as well.

What's up with Message+ texting as default and...

So Sammy or Verizon made this the default texting app. I'm not liking that I can't even set an individual text alert sound per contact. I even went into contacts, added the extra field "Message Tone" and selected a unique one for given contact but always defaults to same stupid sound for all texts from all contacts. doh
Do I have to go 3rd party app to get what I want?
Nope. I disabled that crap and am using the real message app. It's there...
Same here. disabled and using samsung messages

This is definitely a Verizon App and I'm uninstalling and turning off as many of them as I can. I don't even want to their cloud.
Thanks for the replies. Didn't even realize it was a damn Verizon bloat app. Going to go back to "Chomp SMS" I think.
I think it has some great features. such as being able to text on wifi if there is no signal. if someone send you a link it gives you a preview of the site before the need to click on it. it also handles pictures that have been sent back and forth very nicely. I could go on but check it out.

I was just going to say this. The vzw app is really nice. I have it on my Note 12.2 tablet too. Wifi texting is awesome. It's also integrated with glympse, which is so incredibly useful. my wife and I use it all the time.
Just because it's made by Verizon doesn't mean it's some hellishly crappy battery sucking phone melting app
I started using it last week. I discovered it by accident. It allows me to install it on my computers, my N7, and my phone. I can text from any of these devices and receive texts on all of them.
It is missing some of the cool functionality of the Samsung stock app, but it is definitely worth having. It's kind of like what Apple did with their "being able to text from phone, iPad, or Mac" thing.
Thats kind of cool.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/products/verizon-messages.html
If it works then I could stop using MightyText to text from my computer.
Cool will check this out, thx! I use handcent and pay $9.99 for the gold plan to backup all my mms/sms and can use on ipad, windows to text a year. Will check out verizons app more!
: )
Reporting back and it isnt the prettiest or hardly customizable at all but it works and honestly no complaints. Putting Textra and Mightytext sms app sync on the backburner while I try this out.
I installed the update in the google play market for this app and it allows much more customization with fonts, colors, backgrounds, list types, chat bubbles.
First Verizon App I like and use lol. Saying it here.:good:

I installed the update in the google play market for this app and it allows much more customization with fonts, colors, backgrounds, list types, chat bubbles.
First Verizon App I like and use lol. Saying it here.:good:

Not sure if I had applied the update or not. Can you tell me if it allows individual per contact notifications assignments?

It allows individual sounds for different people.
Other than that its texting that works through wifi and my pc.
OK, that desktop app is pretty cool. On my iMac (OSX Yosemite) it wants access to my contacts, then my phone number, then sent me a text with a code that I popped into the app and wham! All my texts are now on my desktop app. Thanks for the heads-up!
BTW - I am still using the default Android text app on my phone and not the Verizon Message+ and I still seem to get the full functionality, so you can have the best of both worlds. One caveat - My Android contacts were not shared on my iMac so some of the desktop app messages show only the phone number and not the contact name. Looks like it is time to synchronize!

Wow, what a surprise that this app is actually worthwhile. I'm not sure I'm curious enough to stray away from Hangouts though, I get a lot of use out of that app. If only verizon would allow wifi texting to 3rd party apps.
Is it a battery/cpu hog? I'm hesitant to believe this is a well constructed app

I've been using it since yesterday. I haven't noticed any battery drain from using it.

Is the "cloud" texting intuitive enough to justify jumping ship from hangouts? I'm really torn here.
Honestly. Just use it for a whole day.
Only disadvantage I see is that its not as polished and if your friends are using hangouts then it might not work.
