I've never used Message+ before, but it's the default messaging app. Is it a good app, or another crappy verizon bloat app?
I love Handcent.
Even let's you back up sms and mms separately to the cloud. And restore. Without root.

You could call it a bloat app with actual functionality. With Message+ you can send texts on wifi (no Verizon signal) and from other devices (Mac/PC, Android/iOS tablet, other phone) and have it sync on your phone. I use it as my default because its the only multi-device texting app that doesn't need your phone to be on in order to send messages as they are sent directly through Verizon.
I absolutely love textra. nothing pulled me from 8sms for over a year until I found textra.

I just find that 3rd party apps don't run as "smoothly" as built in messaging apps. Maybe it's just my mindset idk lol..
I use it on my WiFi only tablet. Works good. Aside from that I use stock.
I use Samsungs message app. I am a little irritated that took quick reply and the detailed lockscreen info away. Along with other little things like the ability to change folder colors. Annoying, but nice phone
I use Verizon Message + to restore all my messages and then I revert to using the included Android app. I've tried many of the third party apps, but I hate hate hate the advertising and I feel they are generally slower as well.

I switch between GoSms and Handcent. Might have to check out Textra if people really like that. Also saw one called Sliding Messaging that looked kind of cool.

I refuse to use message + because Verizon's security is absolutely garbage. I've been hacked and people have gotten into my integrated messaging and it's absolutely ridiculous what a security flaw this is. If i were you guys, I wouldn't use it.

Pretty sure no one's trying to hack me plus I keep my text threads cleared out. I'm ocd and hate the clutter.
I've been partial to EvolveSMS lately, other than that I just user stock, which is apparently Message+ now.

During the Nexus/ICS unveiling in Hong Kong it was mentioned that while using Google Voice, all voicemails would be shown in the Phone app (alongside missed and recent calls).
They made note of a new API that allows all voicemail services to "plug in" to this functionality.
Have they not enabled this yet for the Google Voice app? I can receive voicemails through the GV app, but they do not show in the Phone app.
Maybe it's something wrong with my setup?

I didn't even know they announced that. My voicemails certainly do not show up in the call log. Although, it would be pretty cool if they did.
hey that's a good question, what happened to that feature? i watched it at the event and it looked awesome. your voice mail played right inside the call log. i havent even heard anything about it since then...

wow. that look awesome! I would love to have that. The google voice app is not very pretty/user friendly. This method is much more elegant.
Yeah, the GV stuff really could stand to be more fully integrated with the OS. For example, wouldn't it be SWEET to receive SMS via GV and then have an option to just send those messages to the default SMS application on your phone? At the moment, there isn't really any good/friendly way for 3rd party apps to interact with the GVApp. +1 for more GV OS integration!

Kinda like iMessage where it is all integrated...
I read somewhere awhile back that they were totally redesigning the GV app...maybe that's what they're waiting on?
Still waiting on MMS support. I hate that when someone sends me a picture message it simply goes into a black hole with no bounce notification to the sender or notification to me that one was sent

True, but all replies to the original incoming SMS will be sent from the cell number and not the Google Voice number.
From what I understand the ability to integrate voicemail into the phone app exists in ICS already but the carriers or an app has to write code to make it happen. So yes if google chose they should be able to use the API they wrote into ICS for GV and integrate it...I for one hope they do, having to go to GV for voicemail suks.

Being rooted, I deleted Talk and then installed Hangouts. It works for a short time and then I start seeing a message that says it can't reach Google. Not sure what that's about. I also kept getting a Talk and Hangouts notification every time I got a message and I wasn't allowed to clear the Talk one.
In other news, I manually placed it on my Note 10.1 and it has worked flawlessly...

Having played with Hangouts...
You're better off with Talk and G+. Hangouts doesn't even have online/busy/not-online status, which has been a fundamental piece of online chat since....I dunno....AOL AIM?
I played with the "update for all of 30 minutes before I reflashed my ROM. Hangouts is currently not even a feature-complete AIM replacement. It is pretty, but that is about the only thing it has going for it over what it is supposed to replace.

What is the difference between online (green in Talk) and offline (gray), busy/do-not-disturb (red) or away (yellow)?
What is when one does not have any picture?
How do I see the list of my Talk-/Hangout-capable contacts? I have about 10 such persons in Google Talk, but suddenly 20 more in the Hangouts list.
Sorry guys but it's really crap.

WRONG!
Some of them only use google account to activate the android phone and to use the app (play) store, they do not use GMail nor Talk or Hangups. At least one is only using iPhone and iMac. I used to talk to him once. He never starts Talk or Hangups since them. They are all on the long long list... Why?? How do I remove them easily?
And: how do I signalize that I am busy and may not be disturbed ("busy" = red)? How can I see that someone is away (Android phone online but screen is off: yellow/orange)?
Sorry but is is crap, CRAP *CRAP*, not an upgrade!
Bask to Talk ... and happy again!
I have the update.. But didn't take it.. I like my inverted talk better

I'm in the camp that says it's the biggest piece of crap google has put out in a long time. While I think the name itself is lame as hell. My main issues in order are...
1. All of your contacts are added whether you want them there or not. Face it, I don't want every contact in my address book in my hangout. There is no way to remove the unwanted contacts from the list without blocking them (which also blocks them from your google+. Now I have 200+ names in my hangout. Wheres that stupid sign that we can hang around google's neck.
2. I have 2 separate accounts one for just my family and the other for my xda friends. There is no real way to separate these accounts all the contacts for each are merged together. Again, where's that sign?
3. While it does show when you are online or offline it doesn't give you to option of being away or busy.
There or more but these are my top 3.
It's really a huge step backward from talk.
So Sammy or Verizon made this the default texting app. I'm not liking that I can't even set an individual text alert sound per contact. I even went into contacts, added the extra field "Message Tone" and selected a unique one for given contact but always defaults to same stupid sound for all texts from all contacts. doh
Do I have to go 3rd party app to get what I want?
Nope. I disabled that crap and am using the real message app. It's there...

Thanks for the replies. Didn't even realize it was a damn Verizon bloat app. Going to go back to "Chomp SMS" I think.
I think it has some great features. such as being able to text on wifi if there is no signal. if someone send you a link it gives you a preview of the site before the need to click on it. it also handles pictures that have been sent back and forth very nicely. I could go on but check it out.

I was just going to say this. The vzw app is really nice. I have it on my Note 12.2 tablet too. Wifi texting is awesome. It's also integrated with glympse, which is so incredibly useful. my wife and I use it all the time.
Just because it's made by Verizon doesn't mean it's some hellishly crappy battery sucking phone melting app
I started using it last week. I discovered it by accident. It allows me to install it on my computers, my N7, and my phone. I can text from any of these devices and receive texts on all of them.
It is missing some of the cool functionality of the Samsung stock app, but it is definitely worth having. It's kind of like what Apple did with their "being able to text from phone, iPad, or Mac" thing.
Thats kind of cool.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/consumer/products/verizon-messages.html
If it works then I could stop using MightyText to text from my computer.
Cool will check this out, thx! I use handcent and pay $9.99 for the gold plan to backup all my mms/sms and can use on ipad, windows to text a year. Will check out verizons app more!

Reporting back and it isnt the prettiest or hardly customizable at all but it works and honestly no complaints. Putting Textra and Mightytext sms app sync on the backburner while I try this out.
I installed the update in the google play market for this app and it allows much more customization with fonts, colors, backgrounds, list types, chat bubbles.

It allows individual sounds for different people.
Other than that its texting that works through wifi and my pc.
OK, that desktop app is pretty cool. On my iMac (OSX Yosemite) it wants access to my contacts, then my phone number, then sent me a text with a code that I popped into the app and wham! All my texts are now on my desktop app. Thanks for the heads-up!
BTW - I am still using the default Android text app on my phone and not the Verizon Message+ and I still seem to get the full functionality, so you can have the best of both worlds. One caveat - My Android contacts were not shared on my iMac so some of the desktop app messages show only the phone number and not the contact name. Looks like it is time to synchronize!
:good:
Wow, what a surprise that this app is actually worthwhile. I'm not sure I'm curious enough to stray away from Hangouts though, I get a lot of use out of that app. If only verizon would allow wifi texting to 3rd party apps.
Is it a battery/cpu hog? I'm hesitant to believe this is a well constructed app

Honestly. Just use it for a whole day.
Only disadvantage I see is that its not as polished and if your friends are using hangouts then it might not work.

I tried it with my girlfriend, at home on our wifi network and it still paused due to a slow connection. Pretty sure 75 down/ 25 up should be good enough for this with nothing else hooked up to the network.

Makes sense. But you dont have to download facetime from the app store. Its like 1 person out of 10 has this installed and theres no use of it when u have it and u try to video call ur friend or mom who has no idea what google duo is.
Now if they include that in Nougat, then its a different story.

To me this is a negative, not a positive. It's the reason I don't use whatsapp. I flip sims whenever I travel so I want something that's got an account login, not registered to your number. I use hangouts as my main application. The only thing it doesn't have that I really wish it had was Push to Talk like whatsapp does.
Im really digging this Duo app. My girl and i have been using it quite frequently without issue. That was the only thing i liked about Apple phones and now we have our own version. While i understand not having everyone on board with it but for a small circle of people it's great.

IMO it's better than these. With a low data connection where I tested it it was great.
Just wondering if anyone has been noticing an issue with receiving emails promptly from GMail. I don't receive notifications from gmail even though I checked the notification settings and its also configured for push email.

I get notifications for most Gmails from different accounts but definitely not for all incoming mails. No logic behind that by now.

It seems to me that The Pixel is not good in the notification department. Is not good with notifications of two paid emails apps, Aqua Mail and [email protected] Mail Pro. Its no good with notifications at paid SMS apps like Yaata. So I uninstall the majority of my paid apps and now use Google Messenger app, not my favorite SMS but with Yaata the coming messages looks weird ( check out the screenshot ). The Gmail app, as you said, no good with notifications. I'm using it and constantly opening it to check out my emails. I think that my Pixel XL is not friendly with third parties apps no matter if you bought them at Google Play Store.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Mine are really delayed.... they come... but a long time after they are actually there.
They also need to add the ability to set time and day restrictions to email notifications by account. For instance, I only want personal (gmail)email notifications from this day to that day and only during those hours. But my work Outlook Exchange email, I want notified immediately M-F 8-5 and keep them silent on weekends. Then I want all email notifications off at night between certain hours, and I can't use a do not disturb global feature because I need to receive important texts or calls.

Sorry , I forgot to upload the screenshot of a received text message using Yaata SMS paid version. It's my favorite SMS paid app but not works at my Pixel XL. Who said that Google Android is an inclusive Platform ?

Sorry , I forgot to upload the screenshot of a received text message using Yaata SMS paid version. It's my favorite SMS paid app but not works at my Pixel XL. Who said that Google Android is an inclusive Platform ?

Hello, right now I'm at the office and as soon I arrive home I'm going to check out. Yesterday I downloaded from Android Police site the APK of the Google Messenger, today I received around 64 text messages and not issue at all.

I second this. Most likely a battery optimization and/or doze bug.
