I have an HTC EVO with software Hardware version 003, 3.29.651.5, S-OFF and HBOOT-0.97.0000. I have tried both update files I could find for 3.70.651.1:
OTA_supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.30.651.3_releasekobxwrvtv9q86pp0.zip
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.29.651.5_releasezq9ss6wyobuo26b5.zip
Neither works as both give errors upon applying update.zip in the recovery menu. "Error 7" and "sd install error" appear with tons of other odd text which don't really form many words. What is really odd is last time my phone was rooted and the update was released I simply did the method above like normal and everything went great. Then once it was done i re-rooted! Not this time though...
I have also tried directly downloading the update to my phone via htc update and installing but I get started and it quickly goes to a frozen yellow triangle icon which then I must pull the battery. My dilemma?
I wanted to try using the file my phone downloads from htc directly but i am unable to find the file on my phone? I have searched with astro file explorer and tried every search strong possible. I searched the SD and then tried to search the main phone memory. The phone says it stores it somewhere in the memory but doesn't say where? Does anyone know where it does? I wanted to try this and see if it will update.
I am basically looking to update and I could care less about root as I can redo it after the update. The big issue is that I want my phone to stay the way it is with no deletion of ANY DATA such as messages, apps, etc... I simply want to update and re-root like I did last time and I can't figure out why it won't let me? I don't want to have to flash a new stock ROM and lose everything or have to use a backup program to do what i did so easily last time.
The new version of unrevoked 3.3 is out so I want to update and be done. Perhaps the root is causing it and can I un-root and then re-root after the update? I hate that HTC released multiple versions of the same phone as updates become extremely tricky now and dangerous. Than You for any help you can provide.

if you are rooted then you should be using a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom to update. DO NOT do OTAs
I've seen took many people posting threads recently about trying to do the 3.70 ota and thinking they will just reroot after, they all have problems, my suggestion is to grab the radio/pri/nv/wimax update combo and flash it, then flash sprint lovers 3.70 after wiping cache and dalvik. you will still have root and all your apps with the newest software
make a backup in Ra beforehand just in case

I don't understand why my phone just won't update? I don't really want to flash but thanks for the info. Does anyone know where the EVO stores the updates it downloads? If anyone could please provide me with more info that would be great.
The reason it won't update is because you have a custom recovery. You need to flash the stock recovery to allow you to update.
If you follow the link above it will let you do what you want keeping all your data and upgrading like normal. Just need to flash the stock recovery back. This is as long as you did unrevoked forever.
The downloaded updates are stored in the phones file system under /cache. You need to be able to mount your file system as rw to be able to access. If you don't know how to do that you can find both of the OTA updates on the web and download them. Have to have the correct one for the version you are currently on. The Evo's were at two different revs for this last update.
Even if you find the OTA update and try to apply it from your custom recovery it will not work.
Dig a little more and if you cannot find them I will find the links again, didn't save 'em.
Very good post and I am wondering the same thing. I haven't tried the stock recovery image thing yet but might soon. It was very easy to install the OTA update last time and then just reinstall the recovery image and superuser app. I bet it is not working because they changed the hboot in this version. I too haven't updated yet since I don't like losing my data and potentially missing something. I will probably just say screw it in a couple of weeks once I get time though and just flash the rooted version of the update.

Sorry doesn't work for me! It gets about 1/4 updating and then goes to the red triangle icon and never turns off. I did everything the guide said. I have the original recovery and S-OFF. What do I do now as I simply want to update and not lose my data!

Just flash a rooted copy of the stock ROM and only wipe the cache and dalvik. If you leave your data intact it will save all your settings.
I've been updating this way since I rooted about a month after the phone came out.
WTF!?
Can you point me to a step by step guide xHausx? And this would keep my caller ids, apps, internet files, themes, preferences, etc?

1. Download a Rooted 3.70 Stock Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251)
2. Copy Downloaded rom to your SDCard
3. Reboot to Recovery
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik-Cache
6. Flash the Zip you copied to your SDCard
7. Reboot
8. Done
Do Not Wipe Data, or you will lose what you are trying to keep.
I'm just curious. The 3.70.651.1 update you were trying to use. Where did you try to DL it from. I think you were using the wrong file.

For some reason teshx set that ROM up to wipe data.. you'll have to open the zip and change it.
look in it for meta-inf\com\google\android\update-script file and open that, at the top you will see it say "format DATA:". Just delete that, save, zip and flash.
Why that is set up like that I have no idea

damn man you really like your phone stock, and i guess you dont have time to read all 9 stickys helping root people, so we'll just need to fill you in
the bottom line: flash a custom rom and you will never want to go back. NEVER OTA WITH ROOT OR YOU COULD GET SCREWED BADLY. even a stock-ish custom rom like mikfroyo is better than stock. titanium backup will backup all apk's and data. or you can just not wipe data.

glad to say that ive been able to debrick my phone like 5 times in a row successfully which is a weight off my shoulders.
however, once im debricked, rooted, cwm installed, and all .img's pushed i try to flash a custom rom. i've tried every one and i get bootloops every time... they seem to install just fine. very normal timing and everything, no errors. any ideas?
Don't format /data. Are you doing that? Link the steps you're taking when you are in cwm to flash over the rom. Maybe something is amiss.
nope not formatting data. ive been doing wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and format /system.
Man I was in the same boat as you but was finally able to get it sorted this morning. What I highly, highly recommend is starting as fresh and as clean as you possibly can. That is before you do CWM or anything like that restore your phone with the Korean kdz, push all the images (system being last) then make sure you have a bootable, working phone. Also I would recommend using different/new/fresh .img files...I downloaded ones from the unbricking thread and only used a copy of my baseband.img. I had a feeling one of my files wasn't quite right so starting with all new ones may have helped.
Don't try anything from a backup or do a restore or anything-start fresh and make sure everything works as it should. From there do CWM and then do your ROMS. I know you're almost there and its a headache to keep starting from the bottom but do it all one step at a time, in order and you will find success.

Are the ROMs installing in less than 30 seconds or 2-5 minutes? If its less than 30 seconds, you need to flash it again.
If i was you i would install the new CWM, once it installs the new CWM it'll work.

I had the same problem for awhile. Had to use the Unbricker:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412367
Followed ALL instructions, including "Restoring Nitro HD partition images" before flashing CWM. After that, no more bootloops and installed Revolutions rom w/out issue. Reboots just fine after.
I used the V10i-the direct download from LG...I think all the other recommendations are spot on but first and foremost get everything squared away with a fresh install of the kdz, all the images (in the proper order), the new version of CWM and then your rom of choice...Hope you're making some progress!
I'm on the new CWM and still have a loop if I reboot. Then I need to restore from CWM to get going again.
The soft brick boot loop I got was caused solely by format /system. I did not format /data.
I went through the whole deal last night and this morning and was able to get a fresh start on everything and am now running the HD ROM and haven't had a boot loop since I got everything back up and running...
I really think starting with the freshest install and making sure everything is functional step by step is where you'll be able to get through all that mess...just stay away from and restores or using any .img files that may have any software glitches as you'll get back to square one every time.

Go look at the thread "[Solved] Unbricking solution...". Follow it to the T, however, i'd recommend using v10i.kdz rather than v10f.kdz. Definitely try the f version first but if it doesn't work try i. That's what I did. Basically what you're going to want to do is:
1. Restore the phone to a korean image using the v10i (or f) file and the LG software provided and referenced in the unblocking thread.
2. Once booted, root the phone. (specific instructions for v10i are in a thread somewhere linked by [email protected] v10f use either SuperOneClick root or DoomLord v4. Make sure you have adb installed for doomlord.
3. Once rooted use adb to push over stock .img files in this order: boot, recovery, firmware, baseband, system.
4. after the files are pushed boot into phone and root again (optional).
5. Install CWM5 through adb or terminal emulator.
Good luck, let me know if you have any questions and I can go into more detail.

This bothers me, and I've decided not to go through the root. There is now a system update present, (ota) and i want to install it, but the presence of superuser scares me.. Should I just update? My android version is 4. 1.1

So you probably have the custom recovery still installed on your phone (CWM) correct? If so, that is what will prevent the update from going through from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2. The update is looking for the stock recovery.

Since you have a custom recovery, I'd recommend just flashing the stock rooted ROM by Freeza. It should be exactly what you're looking for: rooted, stock system with no extras and nothing removed.
First flash MB1 baseband in recovery (called "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" on Freeza's page)
Then (while in recovery) perform a factory reset, wipe davik and cache, and flash the Rom (your choice n Odex vs. Deodex).
You'll be rooted with stock. No more nagging updates (for MB1, at least).

Thanks! I'll probably end up doing this. Although, it raises some concerns, because I tried to flash Cyanogenmod, and clockwork mod completely froze when I attempted it, and wiped my phone. Guess it's worth a shot? Also, I would like to be able to un–root if the need arises.

You could try using the toolkit by mskip. There is an option in there for restoring to stock rom/firmware/recovery. Just read the directions carefully and thoroughly. Mskip is also pretty good at responding to questions in regard to the toolkit.

Hello again, I recently got the push for update from device for the 4.1.1 with the mb1 and had TWRP and when I accepted it it booted to recovery and then nothing. So I went to Rom Manager app then updated to the CWM 6.0.3.0 regular no touch then tried to get into recovery and instead got the yellow triangle so then I had to pull battery because it was in odin download mode so no way out unless cut power. When I rebooted I got the update message again then accepted what the heck, it gave me a count down of 700 sec then in went to recovery with the android i believe CWM 6.0.3.0 and it took the official update from Sprint only to find out later on I have no root after checking with root checker app and trying to boot to recovery.
So my million dollar question is now what. I downloaded the [SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 UNIFIED TOOLKIT V7.0] Drivers, Backup, Root, Recovery + MORE [SPR] but only supports 4.1.1 and I dont know if its safe to Root 4.1.2 which is not listed unless I donate but not even sure if its supported otherwise I would donate.
How do I regain Root access the easiest way?

Ok, I'm going to answer your question.
First off, I'd recommend looking through CNexus' sticky thread about OTAs (always good to look through the stickies before you post). You'll see exactly why your OTA is failing.
Since you say that you are able to boot into CWM, I'm going to assume that you've done your Odin work. I would recommend going through it again, based on qbking77's thread. Check out the videos and learn how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery. (always good to take a refresher course).
Now that you have CWM and have rooted through Odin, you will not be able to update using the OTAs from Sprint(again, look through CNexus' thread).
This is not a bad thing, as Freeza always releases an updated Stock Rooted Rom based on the most recent OTA (normally he gets it done before a number of people, myself included, even get the OTA notification).
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).

The files will still work exactly the same. Follow the instructions, and you'll be good.

Thanks for the heads up I got scared after updating but read If you take OTA then you will lose ROOT. This is normal what I don't get is how I was able to get OTA with CWM and not TWRP, but I read somewhere some ppl were able to take the OTA with CWM.

Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.

How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

As you probably noticed by now, you didn't need to flash a full "custom stock ROM" to root.

I'm totally new to this rooting &/ flashing thing, so please go easy
So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

For your reference, you can't erase /system in stock recovery.

I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

I'll download CM10.1.2 tomorrow and will decide to install it once Stock JB 4.2.2 starts acting up again.
In the meantime I'll read on about kernels, please keep don't close this thread...yet.

I've decided that I will test out the Rom that I have currently (4.2.2) for a few weeks, and then flash CM.
I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2
So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:

So far I came across this thread having the steps to flash 4.3

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.

I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?

backup everything from your /sdcard to your computer, titanium backups and a nandroid
the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...
Any ideas?

According to a friend's recommendation I used Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to Root, and surprisingly didn't lose any of my data!
