[Q] Error rooting? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Well here we go. I rooted my Evo back in the day, and decided to give it a shot on my sprint GS III. Don't go as well as I thought. Using the Odin method, and following all instructions carefully, I finished and my phone booted, in attempt to download busy box, I found that even tho the superuser app is present, it claims no root. This bothers me, and I've decided not to go through the root. There is now a system update present, (ota) and i want to install it, but the presence of superuser scares me.. Should I just update? My android version is 4. 1.1

So you probably have the custom recovery still installed on your phone (CWM) correct? If so, that is what will prevent the update from going through from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2. The update is looking for the stock recovery.

Since you have a custom recovery, I'd recommend just flashing the stock rooted ROM by Freeza. It should be exactly what you're looking for: rooted, stock system with no extras and nothing removed.
First flash MB1 baseband in recovery (called "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" on Freeza's page)
Then (while in recovery) perform a factory reset, wipe davik and cache, and flash the Rom (your choice n Odex vs. Deodex).
You'll be rooted with stock. No more nagging updates (for MB1, at least).
Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'll probably end up doing this. Although, it raises some concerns, because I tried to flash Cyanogenmod, and clockwork mod completely froze when I attempted it, and wiped my phone. Guess it's worth a shot? Also, I would like to be able to un–root if the need arises.

You could try using the toolkit by mskip. There is an option in there for restoring to stock rom/firmware/recovery. Just read the directions carefully and thoroughly. Mskip is also pretty good at responding to questions in regard to the toolkit.

I could try that as well, I'll have to talk to my friend because I don't have a computer. Thanks! You guys have been a huge help.

[Q] tmobile OTA and rooted phone

i have a T989, rooted, Clockwork Mod, and installed some stock Android (sans bloatware) MOD.
i had updates set to automatic and am now being bugged to install the new TMobile update, which doesn't seem to be able to install with Clockwork, and i can't turn off the persistent Update prompts.
i've already bricked one GS2, and obviously fear doing it again. I wouldn't get another chance, i don't think. (i do have insurance on the phone, not sure if it would cover a rooted phone?)
what can someone tell me about the TMobile update and Clockwork, or whatever i need to do, go with the update or stop it somehow...?
thanks for your help.
Ota update requires stock recovery.
Grab one of the updated stock roms and flash via cwm. Then Odin the new baseband.
Sent from my SGH-T989
i think i have one of those stock roms - i chose one that was just 'the same thing but without some of the standard apps'. how can i check to see what rom i have...?
and what do you mean by baseband? the new update? is it already dl'd to my phone? i've searched through the phone's dirs (rooted File Explorere, i guess) and could not find anything...
sorry to be a pain - i can't brick another one, of course... (
is this what you mean by a 'stock updated rom':

No, look for the KL1 release.
Baseband is your radio btw. Don't worry about the radio for now, just work on getting the rom flash.

ok, found Deodexed_KL1_T989 (T989UVKL1 by Whitehawkx) is that what i'm looking for? -
couple of questions:
he says on the post:
"DONT FLASH - add files to the zip in the app folder, then flash. Or usb connect drag to sd the use some rooted file explorer to place in system/app then reboot."
Flash or don't Flash? I'm transferring the zip to sd now, then i need to move it to system/app...?
once i've 'flashed' what do you mean "Odin the baseband"? i have Odin, used it last time...
thanks

I flashed the ROM, now i have 2.3.6, and now i'm stuck with 2 OTA notifications, one states postponed, and choosing START for the update does nothing.
help?
I had the base load on mine with a bunch of stuff frozen and Clockwork on it (plus root)
I first unfroze all the stuff I had frozen, then ODIN'd back the stock recovery. Didn't touch anything else, then told the OTA to go ahead.
It updated just fine -- removed root of course. I then ODIN'd back the clockwork recovery and re-installed SU, then re-froze all the boatware.
Done in about 15 minutes -- no muss, no fuss, didn't lose anything.

You can probably clear this up by formatting /system in CWM. Then wiping cache and dalvik. Then flash the FL1 update. Hit advance, fix permissions and then reboot.

did all this, nothing's changed. i'm unable to get Odin to see my phone in DL mode. when i boot into DL mode, the device manager shows an alert on my phone. in normal, the drivers work fine and Odin sees the phone.

I lose CWM after JB update??

OK I updated to JellyBean when it was first leaked and have just left it alone. Have been pretty happy with it. While today I have some free time so was going to spend it on XDA all day learning what else has been done since JB was first announced/released. I tried going into recover and CWM was not there. I still have superuser. I downloaded ROM manager and it seems to have installed CWM back on my phone.
Questions are:
Did I lose root?
How do i get permanent root back?
Sorry if there's been threads on this. I work full time, FT student, Getting married in 2 months, and in escrow. I've barely had enough time to take a dump.
Thanks for any help guys, really appreciate it!

two files download when you take the OTA update that essentially revert you back to stock recovery. Go to the new Nexux 101 thread sticky on top of this page to find how to edit those two lines and simply load new custom recovery.
First install root checker and verify you have root:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en
Second check if you have SuperSU in your apps, if not install it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5zdXBlcnN1Il0.
Third and most Important:
When flashing a rom in CWM, you select reboot system, CWM will give you a warning about installing default recovery.
Select the "fix this" option and it will reboot. I suspect you didn't do this and you now have default recovery.
Install Rom Manager:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEucm9tbWFuYWdlciJd
Open it and select option to flash CWM Recovery

Go back to stock, go through adb and push a new recovery image. Don't use CWM though, go with TWRP.

101 thread by efrant is definately a excelent resource. Everyone should read it, even if it is only to remember!
a few tips:
1- with the device in fastboot mode, reflash a recovery (latest versions of either twrp or cwm) with fastboot.
2- in a custom recovery, adb is rooted, so you can even mount /system with rw, and delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p
3- rooting android itself is as easy as booting a custom recovery with fastboot and flashing a previously copied supersu.zip

[Q] Rooted SG3 OTA Update screwed up battery percentage

So there was an OTA update from T-Mobile but because I was rooted via Odin, I tried using Voodoo's OTA root keeper and it didn't work and gave me a failure error. I tried looking it up in the forums and they all said it was easy to use and that they used something called 'stock recovery' which I'm not familiar because this is my first Android phone switching over from Crapple iPhone 4. Anyways after the update failed my initial battery before running the OTA updated was 69% then spiked up to 97% battery after the failure message. Also, when the phone's not charging the battery will slowly rise up a percentage versus going down, but it eventually stops at a certain point. Now I'm lost. If anyone can clear this up please post. Thank you.
Where are you now? Stock recovery? Rooted? Latest ota? What's all broke? Just battery readouts? Rooting again is easy. And I recommend superSU pro to keep root

As of now, my phone is working properly except for the fact that it's displaying incorrect battery %. It's still rooted. I have Voodoo RootKeeper installed. The latest OTA update installation was a fail. Thus apparently making my SG3 reading the incorrect % percentage. Now, I just wanted to update to the latest firmware while keeping my root which apparently is harder than it seems. o.o
I'm really new to Android so I'm not sure what stock recovery is.

Stock recovery is the recovery which came installed with the device from factory. If you have custom recovery, which you most likely do, I would try charging to 100 percent with the device off, then boot to recovery, and wipe battery stats, let it drain completely. And recharge with it off to 100 percent again. Your battery seems to have lost calibration. (Obviously xD )

Okay. I'll try that however, by using the stock recovery do you mean to go to settings and hit "Factory Data Reset"? In which case will erase my phone completely to factory including pictures, contacts, and etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you're telling me to do a factory reset then update OTA officially then reroot my phone?
No. He means the recovery partition. If you have a custom recovery installed (such as clockwork mod recovery or TWRP and you know if you have this, as you would've had to install it yourself) you can boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats.
If you don't know what the above poster or I am talking about, I highly suggest you do some in depth reading first.
Factory data reset is something entirely different.
Wiping battery stats will not wipe your data.

Okay, so instead of going through the tedious process of wiping the battery stats. Can I just unroot my phone completely then wipe it via factory reset. Will that recalibrate my battery? If so, I can do that and then update OTA officially then reroot my phone again because even going through the tedious process of recalibrating my battery. I will not know how to update OTA while keeping my root anyways.

Download the app below and follow the on screen instructions to wipe battstats. It is really easy and no need for recovery. Also this is the one occasion where deleting battstats will work. Meaning it will not increase your battery life.

I think I can help with that.
I have a thread stickied in the development section with all firmwares and otas.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
First, the reason the ota is failing, is because you have a custom recovery installed. You would have installed either CWM (clockworkmod) or TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) during the rooting process. If any part of your system is not stock on the required build, the OTA will fail. You could find a correct version stock recovery and flash that, but there are easier ways.
If you check the top of the thread I linked to you will find a section called root66. These are full firmware files, pre-rooted by mrRobinson. UVALJ4 is the latest build, so download that one to your computer and flash it using Odin. Thats it! You will then be rooted on the latest official build.
Aternatively, if you have CWM recovery installed (not TWRP), you can download the OTA update a little further down in the same post.
First, check your current build in Settings > About Device. Your build should be UVALH2. Confirm this and then download the OTA for UVALH2 - UVALJ4. Download on your phone.
Preserve root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Reboot into recovery. (use Rom or Goo Manager to make this super easy) or, power off the phone, then hold Volume up, Home and Power. When you see the blue text flash at the top of the screen, release all buttons. You should now be in recovery.
Choose Install Zip and browse to where you have it downloaded on your phone. Select the ota and confirm to start the flash.
It will likely throw an error due to recovery, but it should still flash the rest of the systems updates. When you reboot, CWM should prompt you and ask if you want to allow the stock recovery to be written. Choose no, or whichever option keeps CWM and does not install stock recovery.
Now, when it reboots, go back into OTA rootkeeper and restore root. Test it and you are done!
If OTA Rootkeeper fails, you can just boot back into CWM and flash your SuperSU/Superuser zip to reroot.
Check back at my thread soon as I will be posting all of this (but more organized) plus more, including yet another way to update using the OTA and keep root! I will also be explaining how all of it works as best as I can, so check back there if youre interested in that stuff.
Hope this helps!

Hey Juan,
I'm assuming you just got the notification for the OTA. You actually don't have to apply it to get the latest and greatest for our phone. All you have to do is flash Freeza's Stock Rooted Rom (You'll want the DeOdex MD4 Rom). It'll give you the most up-to-date Stock Rom with Root. I've linked and quoted a previous post I made which will give you directions to flash it. Also, CNexus has done a great guide about OTAs over in the general sub-forum. I suggest giving that a look-through.
Also, just a note on the flashing sequence below: In step 4 below, if you're coming from a stock Rom and you're going to a stock Rom, all you have to do is wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. If you're going to a different Rom, it's best to do a full wipe (in my opinion).
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

That's right, dirty flashing should work fine. If you're noticing any major issues (FCs, reboots, etc), you might want to use Titanium Backup to back up your important stuff and do a clean flash. But hopefully the dirty flash will be good.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate the feedback.
Thankfully, I put the hard work in a while ago, so now (for most questions) all I have to do is paste that one post and I'm good to go.
As an aside: yesterday I helped a friend root his GS3 and realized I'm much better at explaining things here on XDA than I am in real life. I kept jumping ahead of myself and trying to explain about wiping /system before I even explained what a custom Recovery is. I should've just asked him to post a question "how do I root" and I could've done a better job explaining it, haha.

[Q] Multiple problems after flashing Stock

Hello everyone,
After a long fight to try and get this phone back to normal, everything seemed good,
except not really
I started on a buggy CM11 version. Sick of it, I downloaded a 4.4.4 stock rom. I had to disable firewall and defender, but I got Odin to flash my md5. I got through everything and it booted successfully. After signing in and all that jazz, I find out that my WiFi isn't working. After a few reboots, My 4G finally works and everything seems to be steady.
Then, after exploring the rest of the phone I find out that all my apps from last ROM are still there. I know that you are supposed to wipe before flashing, but I was told that Odin will take care of that. It obviously didn't.
After THAT, I try to boot into Recovery as the next sensible step is to try to wipe my data and cache. I turn the phone off and press (Vol up + Home + Pwr) and the first boot screen shows for a moment. It says in blue "RECOVERY BOOTING" in the corner. Right after, it disappears and in another second it does the same screen without the "RECOVERY BOOTING". And as presumed, it does a regular boot.
What did I miss? How can I wipe my phone from recovery? How can I fix my problem with Wifi?
Reflash in Odin.
Make sure you have the correct stock rom. If you flash the "md5" you may have flashed the wrong thing. The md5 is not tge firmware, that is just the code that verifies your firmware file is not corrupted.
If your old apps were still there, you flashed the wrong thing. There is no way to flash stock firmware in odin and not wipe the data partition.
You are correct then
Yeah, I flashed a tar.md5 in Odin. It gave me a new ROM but all my apps are there. After all that, I still can't go to recovery. I tried using the terminal and ROM Toolbox to go there, both didn't work. Can I just leave it as it is and find a way to recovery or is the only way to go to bootloader and flash a correct file to get to recovery?
Flash twrp and see if it will reboot into recovery, then factory reset and flash latest firmware with Odin right after. Odin will NOT wipe data. It has to be done manually

It depends on what you ate flashing.
If you are flashing a full stock factory image it will wipe user data. If you are just flashing a system partition it won't.

How do I know whatever I download is deodexed? And I went to a page of ROMs someone gave me and I downloaded the NK2 version, which also gave me a tar.md5. If I want the correct thing to flash, what should I flash?

The first post of any customized stock rom will tell you if its deodexed. If it doesn't say it...its not.
@Essem G:
Any updates for us? I'm following this thread because I have similar problems with my WiFi not working after upgrading from 4.2.2.
Any luck getting TWRP flashed?
Also I believe that the stock firmwares do come as tar.md5's, as in the file: M919UVUFNK2_M919TMBFNK2_M919UVUFNK2_HOME.tar.md5 from ShinySide's stock firmware thread.
As for the WiFi issue, from the hours of reading I've done it looks like this problem occurs when you upgrade your firmware, but it no longer matches the bootloader. Such as bootloader (Baseband) showing MDL, but Build Number showing NH7, NK2, etc. What does your show?
This thread may be of use to you when you get back to a working ROM. Good luck!
@RavenMind1
Everyone has been saying different answers and i've put off fixing my device for a while. I'm just afraid i'll brick it forever and have another nightmare after this current one. So no, there has been no progress. I think i'm gonna try to flash Philz and format my system, then flash a deodexed rom. @g7755725 said that you can flash TWRP, but I usually use Philz. It appears to be that I have lost root access because no root features work and SuperSU won't recognize it. Will everything work or am I setting my self up for disaster?
Edit: Where can I find a deodexed rom? I desperately need one, thanks

@g7755725 I downloaded a deodexed rom from the SkipJacks guy (different page than what you sent me) and it's a little under 9MB... how could this possibly be a ROM?

If you're trying to go back to complete stock then just Odin NK2 firmware. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/general/firmwares-official-mdl-mk2-nb4-t2816508 I used the NK2 from here about 2 days ago to go back to stock.
