So I perm rooted and it says S-Off in fastboot and I have superuser access I believe.
I got rom manager and downloaded clockwork through rm. I try to install rom from SD card, select the baconbits rom, it asks to backup or clear, I have tried both.
The phone boots to htc screen, then shows a black screen with a phone and a red symbol over it. I waited 20 minutes on that screen and nothing happened.
I was able to push vol up and power to get a console but I can't load anything there. It will reboot just fine after that but I have no changes and still cannot overclock.
Does this have something to do with the user keys or whatever?
Thanks in advance for reading this and any help that gets offered. I hate to have my first post on a forum being a "help me" post.

Go into Rom Manager and try to flash Clockwork recovery again. This has happened to a lot of people... Flash it a second time, and it should be good.

Did you download the "g2-recovery-test-keys.img" from the 3rd post quoted below?
Place that file in the C:/android/tools or whatever your cd line is, which should in the tools folder. Now go the 6th step. FYI the sixth step I tried from fastboot and recovery, none worked until I reinstalled the drivers my computer kept prompting me for and immedatly got the OKAY's from the 7th step.
Edit: The code "fastboot flash recovery g2-recovery-test-keys.img" should be copied pasted onto your cmd.

Bingo, That worked. Glad it was that simple. I actually had to flash clockwork a third time to get it to go all the way.

Hi all,
I'm not one to usually post simple questions but I'm a little stuck and I've tried searching both this forum and on Google for days but cannot seem to get an answer.
After the whole Desire GB fiasco, I've decided to take the plunge and root my Desire. I'm running unrevoked3 on Puppy Linux, I am able to run the reflash file, turn on USB Debugging, Charge only and Unknown sources but nothing runs. The program just sits there informing me that it is "waiting for device".
I'm guessing it's a driver issue in Puppy but can anyone shed any light in getting the OS to recognise the phone? (I've also tried searching on the Puppy Linux forums to no avail).

Unrevoked needs drivers in windows but shouldnt in Linux. So you're on Froyo?

That's what I thought re: drivers and yes I'm running stock 2.2 Froyo. I'm sure it'll be a straightforward fix for someone in the know.
If you mount as disk drive, you can see the drive? What if you re run unrevoked then?
Puppy Linux is your problem, they must have done something to USB when they were trimming things down because I've never been able to get adb working on it...believe me, I tried.
Try with another live-cd.

Hello, I tried to install a new ROM from Cyangenmod 7 to Ice Cream SENSEwich Beta 6 using method via recovery and got a black screen.
Backed up via ClockworkMod Recovery
Was able to fastboot into stock tmobile rom.
Am I still rooted? How do I flash back Cyangenmod 7

1. True S-OFF is a permanent type of S-OFF. There are ways to do it temporarily. It looks like yours is perm S-OFF.
2. From the instructions that you followed, did you have to put a PC10IMG file onto the root of your SD card? If that file is still there, the bootloader will always look to that file and not allow anything else to be done.
3. Clockwork Mod will not show in an apps list. It replaces the recovery of your phone. It is not an app. As for ROM manager, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe if you can pull logs from your phone we can work on that.
4. Just because S-OFF shows up does not mean you are rooted. If you flashed the stock T-Mobile ROM then chances are you lost root privileges. You can do a quick check by looking in your app drawer for the "Superuser" app. If it is there, you are still rooted. If not, most likely you are not.
Oh! your smart…Yes PC10IMG is still on SD card.

ok took off image and it allowed me into recovery now i have a cool picture of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation point
update: pulled battery turned it on using only power button goes to tmobile stock screen and works fine. do i need to re root and flash new rom?
need to flash a custom recovery again via fastboot. get the .img from somewhere in xda (or google it)
put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
connect your phone via usb and boot into fastboot
open cmd on computer change directories to where fastboot and recvoery image are
type fastboot devices (just to make sure its working)
then type
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then
fastboot reboot bootloader
now boot into recovery
now flash rom of choice via recovery

Am I using ADB AND FASTBOOT or SDK to put recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot.exe on computer
sorry a bit confused on what you are asking
after downloading the sdk package you will find a folder probably under platform tools with adb and fastboot .exe in it
this is the folder you want the recovery image
this is also the folder you want to open cmd
right click in the folder and choose open comand here
then you should be ready to use fastboot
(another option is to change enviromenta variables so you dont need to worry about what folder fastboot is in in the future but not necessary right now)

did you get the recovery in an .img or a .zip? if its zipped extracted it
alsom make sure it is named recovery.img
windows adds the file extention so you may just need to name it recovery

It came as a disk image file not zipped, until I changed the file to just recovery I got an error cannot load.
Once changed it loaded started recovery and failed.
Ive been reading about eng hboot as mine shows "s-off" not "eng s-off" but I don’t know how it applies to this.
did you follow the htc official dev bootloader unlock?
or did you root following the wiki?
if you did the htc way you are not true soff and you will need to do this first. look for nipqers directions

Ok,
I used Root checker from the market and it said i do not have proper root access
downloaded terminal emulator from market $SU comes back SU not found. No # symbol
CPU tuner stated unusuable configuration
So I am thinking I lost Root

i can't root my phone because when i go into the recovery mode, the black screen comes up with the 4 lighting keys. i don't know what to do. i read the related posts but nothing seems to help. could you guys please help.. i unlocked my phone for rooting and now i can't do anything.
You can root your phone by using the HTC super tool, just google for it.
I assume you have stock recovery on your phone, then you actually can't really use that recovery. You should try to root it with supertool
and then install CWM with ROM Manager

i tried the supertool but it doesn't work. i tried everything even the clockworkmode recovery, the flashing of cwm works perfectly fine but the recovery mode doesn't show up so that i can install from sd card. only a black screen with key lighted comes up. i tried the things given in the black screen recovery article of xda .. but nothing seems to help. could you help me out to see through this. my moms htc wildfire s which is one year old works perfectly fine but the problem is with my new one.. i also heard that lot of people are experiencing the same.
After unlocking, you have to root the device first then install CWM and take a nandroid backup thru Recovery option.
For rooting you can also use root.zip method. just google it.
To flash CWM, goto Hboot menu and select fastboot, then goto cmd (command prompt) on pc try using fastboot commands to flash boot.img, system.img and recovery.img.
Hope this may be useful.....

i tried the root.zip method. i copied the zip file on the memory card and then went to hboot. but then i found the error which is : CID ERROR
PRESS POWER BUTTON TO REBOOT.

bro, this time i flashed the PG76IMG.zip files but when i go into the recovery to flash install from root.zip, the same black screen comes up. this is the problem which i have been having.. the black screen on recovery which makes us do nothing at all..
i think a new custom recovery has to be made for the htc wildfire s inorder to prevent the black screen on recovery. or does anyone know how to root wildfires without the need to go into any custom recovery mode. please help .. this has become a real problem.. i really wish there was a way.

Maybe you need to downgrade your stock ROM (if you still can boot it up so to say).
Look for a RUU for WFS and try to downgrade/upgrade HBOOT and such to an older/newer version.
Sorry that I can't post any links too RUUs, I'm on my phone.
But there is a tread with these in the Dev section I think, but if they don't work you can just google for them.
tbh I have a similar problem with my bro's WFS, I can't even unlock it because of wrong versions a such so I think your problem could be related to this.

i dont think that would work i've tried every recovery i've found here and still black screen you may want to downgrade your kernel after unlock of bootloader then use superoneclick. if not working look for my post before which uses taco root to root the device

first u need adb.exe, adbwinapi.dll, fastboot.exe in that c:\android\
u need a command in cmd to navigate. "cd c:\android"

i used the exact same version of clockworkmode recovery. the problem is not with the recovery i think its with my phone. and i tried downgrading the hboot using ruu but the problem still exists ... that is the black screen on recovery.

My phone's got a wonky vol down button that works about 5% of the time. I've tried the regular power + vol down boot method about 20 times now, but it isn't happening for me.
Battery pull, factory reset, power + home button all failed (suggestions on Google). I've further tried typing su followed by reboot recovery in terminal emulator, nothing at all happens.
There's got to be some other way of forcing the phone to reboot into recovery, right? I think you can also install the Android SDK and force reboot recovery from that, but I'd rather leave that as the very last measure.
I'm running Android Revolution 7.0.3.

You can use either cwm or 4ext to boot into recovery. There are also a few mods that let you have the 4way boot using the power button (long pressing). Don't know if android R has that mod.

just install clockworkmod or 4ext touch recovery.
In the app you need to install the recovery itself and then you can boot into recovery right from the app.
I don't even use the Power + Volume buttons anymore for it. with 4ext even your touchscreen works in recovery!
Or Quick Boot - free app on play store.
And you can do it if you have adb on your PC from when you rooted, you don't need the full SDK. Depends which tool you used to root, but chances are it has adb.exe and the necessary dll files in that folder.
Just plug the phone in, open a command prompt and cd to the folder with adb.exe. Then type "adb reboot recovery" in the command window.
