Exchanging faulty unit - resetting back to stock? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

My Blue S3 had a bad USB port and stopped charging unless you pressed very hard on the charging port, so T-Mobile sent me another one to exchange. Before I send the original one back, how can I reset it back to the original state? It's rooted, so I assume that I might need to reset the flash counter also.
Would it be enough to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727120?

Just flash a stock_like rom
Nobody checks the flash counter
Make sure you have some T-Mobile bloat on the homepages

Use triangle away from the market 1st to reset the countet while you are still rooted. Now flash a stock Odin for T-Mobile

Stock Rom.. They don't check that stuff. I've exchanged 2 Samsung phones before with no problems...

How unoriginal is the phone right now? I mean if its got CM10 on it, it may raise a red flag. Does your usb port work? If so Odin back to stock. If not, then download from the phone stock rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737855
Then buy mobile Odin in the market and use it to install the stock rom, then do a factory reset. Should be good to go then.

[Q] {Q} Returning phone to TMo

Hi, I'm returning a phone for a warranty replacement i just got today. I reflashed stock .tar via odin. I was wondering if i also had to flash the flash counter reset? I saw that in download mode the binary counter was set to non. Is there a way they can pick up the number of flashes other than in download mode? thanks for any information on this

As long as it says "No" you are fine. If it says ANYTHING other than that, use the counter reset.

How do I go about using the counter reset? It's been like 2 weeks and T-Mobile hasn't charged me for the custom count thing yet after my exchange though.

Should I Odin factory software?

So I got this phone the other day, I had the galaxy blaze, was lucky enough to sell it for 300. I talked the dude down on my s2 because it had scratches on the bezel and back door and I know I can get the 3 piece kit for $30, so I gave him 260.
Anyways it seems the phone has some software issues, it constantly freezes, sometimes tapping the text to open the keyboard it takes a couple taps to get the keyboard up. When I shut the phone off it stays at the "goodbye" screen so I have to pull the battery, same with restarting. Should I try to flash the factory software or something? I'm currently stock rooted (rooted it myself but it was the same crap before I rooted).
If so what does do I need? Already have Odin and drivers.

Also, is it normal when I go to menu - about phone and click software update it doesn't do anything but says "no firmware" ?

That's normal. It means it has the latest OTA update. If you are on stock GB and you want to go to the latest ICS, you can use kies or Odin. I recommend Odin back to stock or flash Jedi mind trick. That's one solid ROM!

I'm supposedly on stock ics. Should I Odin back in case the previous owner has it effed up, then re root, then flash the Rom? Is there a way to Odin the stock software and keep root, or should I start from scratch?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
I already have Jedi mind trick downloaded from the other day, I tried it out and nandroided back to stock ics, but I'm thinking about getting jmt back.just not sure if I should flash the stock files first for fear of something is hacked up
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
I'm running into the same thing with my GTab. I've done a whole mess of flashing and now when I Nandroid back to my stock HC backup I'm getting nasty side effects. I'm thinking of flashing stock firmware to just start clean all over again. Seems to me if you ever think you've got less than expected stuff happening and you've done everything right, flash factory and start over...
That said I'm probably in for it here with my S2 soon LOL
I'm wondering if it will even make a difference going to a clean slate then flashing jmt. Not sure if there is any prerequisited files that got messed up (flashing the wrong radio or img files)

[Q] tmobile returning phone

I need to return S4 White and get another S4 white.
Can I just do the nandriod backtup on Phone 1 and restore on phone 2?
Ques 2.
Is that okay that I just do the factory reset and leave the root on along with twrp?
if not then I just need to ODIN the stock rom?
I am still within the 20 days return policy
First, yes u can restore it with everything you have on that one with no issue except if your getting the s4 from another carrier, the bloat might give you issues with it.
Second, If you're returning it and it's rooted your warranty is voided so you need to go back to stock and unroot it and the flash counter that tells if you've made any unauthorized changes to the software might give you issues so I don't now how to reset the flash counter so I would wait until u can restart the flash counter and go back to stock... I hope this answered your question...

isn't if I ODIN back to stock would unroot automatically? even remove the recovery as well?
you mean there is no way to check the flash counter or reset?
Odin erases any root files but hey the only way to see if it resets the flash counter is by doing it and once you went back to stock and get on download mode again and once you proceed check at the top left where a small text will say something like, system version: official Samsung, flash counter: 0 or 1, name... Etc... And yes it will take the recovery as well
Edit: if it doesn't reset it try researching it on Google I'm pretty sure there's some way to do it..

flash counter only increase if you ODIN anything other than Stock. Correct?
I use the exploit to get the root access, so technically I never ODIN, and my flash counter should be to 0.
question is if I do the ODIN to stock, is that gonna increase the flash counter?
Can I not just go back to stock via kies? that will not increase the flash counter I guess.
here is the screenshot showing the current status of what it is now after root and twrp installed.
Does not really show the flash counter.
I'm not really sure but try to use triangle away and see if it shows u Ur flash counter and if it does don't try to reset it with it Kuz I don't know if it's compatible with the s4 yet
Edit: I just checked and yes that app does work with the s4 so there's Ur option... Check if it's showing the flash counter nd if it does reset it nd then go back to stock nd problem solved..

System Status is Custom, which if I remember correctly means it has at one point been flashed with a custom firmware.
I may be wrong though.
can someone who is not rooted please tell me the difference, what they see on ODIN screen?

It will say Official instead of Custom. I used Odin to install the MDL update and it changed to Official. In settings > about device > scroll to the bottom and under Device Status it should also say Official.
yeah!!.
This thing is getting on my nerves now.
First that stupid Tmobile error which is forcing me to order the same phone for different line and return this.
Like I said just used an app called TRIANGLE AWAY and it will reset your flash counter...
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium
Triangle Away says I am not using jellybean and the app won't work
now what?
Go to recovery, do a full wipe, power off, use Odin and install the new MDL update.
the s-health is hooked up with the samsung account or I need to do the backup for that data separately?

Is hooked to the phone so once you get a new one it will b there but u will have to re start everything you've made on it its not good to back up system apps.. It will give you too many issues..

follow the instructions as you said.
Now I am back to stock but the Device Status still shows "custom".
I also used the triangle away 2.90 which let me reset the counter back to 0, it showed me on the confirmation page, but looks like that didn't do the job.
Now there is no root but custom device status.
Returning phone like this would cause any issue?
I tried kies as well, its just not connecting with kies, even after re-installing drivers couple of times
Go into stock recovery and wipe cache and do a factory reset from there that should clear it up.

i goofed up

hey guys, I don't really know much about rooting and all that stuff. i rooted it once out of curiousity but quickly went back to the stock firmware and reset the counter. months later (now) I recently started getting all these sim card errors I figured i installed the firmware wrong or something so i tried to redownload the stock firmware and upgrade from there
I launched odin 1.85 installed OUDHS-Recovery-jfltetmo-1.0.3.3 into the phone, ( it passed) and then i installed ROOT_M919UVUAMDL after it rebooted i started getting this
"kernel is not se android enforcing
set warranty bit: kernel"
I can still access cwm touch req0very v1.0.3.3 but I dont know where to go from here, i just want my phone back
Are you still getting sim card errors?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
lol well it wont go past the galaxy s screen. it stuck there and it gives me the error, also i believe its because the stock rom i got was android 4.2 but it was running 4.3. i dont even care what os runs as long as i get my phone running. i tried going through all the posts in the other threads but I dont understand some of the procedures to get them running. cyanogen mod looks nice and simple
I got it to boot up with a nexus rom, its really different from touch wiz it still gave me the kernel error when i booted it but it ran fine afterwards, i was also checking out the rom and it said that I only have 1.2 gb of ram when ireally have 2 gb. slowly but surely i'm starting to dig this changing of the roms, haha. can anyone hook it up with a link the latest firmware of stock touchwiz? i kinda want to get it running good by the weekend. thanks in advance
There's nothing wrong with the message at boot up, you tripped the Knox counter so that's why you get that message.. You can just flash a stock ROM if you want to go back to touchwiz
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
well, it looks like i'm still getting the sim error message, could it be because its running 4.3 still? how do i get it back to stock and reset the counter so that i can exchange it at tmobile?
It's because you tripped the Knox bootloader. I usually just flash the stock ROM that came with the phone when exchanging.

Not in my experience. They just have stuff like Knox and the flash counter, so they have the upper hand in a dispute.

S3 (i747m) Power Button Sensitive

My S3 power button is super sensitive. If I touch it without any pressure at all, it turns on and off. If I were to send it back to Telus ( my provider) or Samsung, what precautions should I take and what should I do? I'm currently on the latest modem for Telus (MK5) and I'm on the 4.3 PAC man ROM. I cannot flash back to 4.1 or 4.2 stock as the mk5 modem prevents me and I will brick my phone. Thanks.

I have the same exact issue and what I did was just mapped my back key to turn screen off when long pressed. I know that wasn't the answer you were looking for exactly but its a work around.
Perhaps someone can point you in the direction of a stock 4.3 ROM that you can flash with odin but I couldn't advise you as I haven't needed to revert to stock for any reason

Thanks for your answer. I'm not really too into going for a work around as I think my warranty is still up and there's some other connection issues on it. Thanks for your reply once again. So all I have to do is get a 4.3 ROM and flash it and I'll be good to go? I know you said you haven't needed to flash back to stock but if I do, how would I reset the counter? I have triangle away at this moment.

No your warranty is void... If you go into download/Odin mode you will see warranty bit 1 in red letters in the top left of the screen at the bottom of all the writing. Regardless of which rom you flash you will be stuck with the custom flash counter having a count and showing device status as custom installed of official and the warranty bit 1 in red letters.
You might get lucky and they may not even check. But if they do...
Also you cannot use triangle away for the warranty bit portion and you're stuck with those bootloaders.

You`re right... you are stuck.. maybe try getting a repair quote from a third party repair shop for replacing the button... since you have already voided the warrenty anyway... May not be as bad as you think...
Okay, how much do you think it'll cost? I have alot of problems with the phone including LTE and connection issues so I would most likely want to send it back.
