[Q] {Q} Returning phone to TMo - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi, I'm returning a phone for a warranty replacement i just got today. I reflashed stock .tar via odin. I was wondering if i also had to flash the flash counter reset? I saw that in download mode the binary counter was set to non. Is there a way they can pick up the number of flashes other than in download mode? thanks for any information on this

As long as it says "No" you are fine. If it says ANYTHING other than that, use the counter reset.

How do I go about using the counter reset? It's been like 2 weeks and T-Mobile hasn't charged me for the custom count thing yet after my exchange though.

[Q] How To: Reset Flash Counter

Wondering if anyone could help me out....
I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 a couple of weeks ago and everything went well. I was using my rooted phone for two weeks until i got a device update from t-mobile. I was hoping it was the jelly bean update so I went ahead and tried to install the update but it was failing. Since I wanted jelly bean so bad I decided to unroot my phone and flash the stock recovery in order to install the update. I flashed the stock recovery and installed the update obviously it was not jelly bean... Now I want to root my phone again but every time I try to flash clockworkmod recovery with odin it does not flash. Odin says everything went okay but when i put my phone in recovery it brings up the stock recovery. I think I may need to reset my flash counter but I could be wrong. Can any one tell me how i can root my phone again? Is there a way to reset the flash counter if my phone is not rooted? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Triangle away. Seriously? Pull the battery after flashing recovery or delete the two files (search) or untock a box.. SEARCH. It gets asked once a week at least.

Can I use Triangle away when I am not rooted? I posted it here because im not sure if i can't root because of the flash counter or because i got an update. I tired pulling the battery after flashing recovery and it did not work. Now my flash counter is up to 4.

[Q] tmobile returning phone

I need to return S4 White and get another S4 white.
Can I just do the nandriod backtup on Phone 1 and restore on phone 2?
Ques 2.
Is that okay that I just do the factory reset and leave the root on along with twrp?
if not then I just need to ODIN the stock rom?
I am still within the 20 days return policy
First, yes u can restore it with everything you have on that one with no issue except if your getting the s4 from another carrier, the bloat might give you issues with it.
Second, If you're returning it and it's rooted your warranty is voided so you need to go back to stock and unroot it and the flash counter that tells if you've made any unauthorized changes to the software might give you issues so I don't now how to reset the flash counter so I would wait until u can restart the flash counter and go back to stock... I hope this answered your question...

isn't if I ODIN back to stock would unroot automatically? even remove the recovery as well?
you mean there is no way to check the flash counter or reset?
Odin erases any root files but hey the only way to see if it resets the flash counter is by doing it and once you went back to stock and get on download mode again and once you proceed check at the top left where a small text will say something like, system version: official Samsung, flash counter: 0 or 1, name... Etc... And yes it will take the recovery as well
Edit: if it doesn't reset it try researching it on Google I'm pretty sure there's some way to do it..

flash counter only increase if you ODIN anything other than Stock. Correct?
I use the exploit to get the root access, so technically I never ODIN, and my flash counter should be to 0.
question is if I do the ODIN to stock, is that gonna increase the flash counter?
Can I not just go back to stock via kies? that will not increase the flash counter I guess.
here is the screenshot showing the current status of what it is now after root and twrp installed.
Does not really show the flash counter.
I'm not really sure but try to use triangle away and see if it shows u Ur flash counter and if it does don't try to reset it with it Kuz I don't know if it's compatible with the s4 yet
Edit: I just checked and yes that app does work with the s4 so there's Ur option... Check if it's showing the flash counter nd if it does reset it nd then go back to stock nd problem solved..

System Status is Custom, which if I remember correctly means it has at one point been flashed with a custom firmware.
I may be wrong though.

It will say Official instead of Custom. I used Odin to install the MDL update and it changed to Official. In settings > about device > scroll to the bottom and under Device Status it should also say Official.
yeah!!.
This thing is getting on my nerves now.
First that stupid Tmobile error which is forcing me to order the same phone for different line and return this.
Like I said just used an app called TRIANGLE AWAY and it will reset your flash counter...

follow the instructions as you said.
Now I am back to stock but the Device Status still shows "custom".
I also used the triangle away 2.90 which let me reset the counter back to 0, it showed me on the confirmation page, but looks like that didn't do the job.
Now there is no root but custom device status.
Returning phone like this would cause any issue?
I tried kies as well, its just not connecting with kies, even after re-installing drivers couple of times
Go into stock recovery and wipe cache and do a factory reset from there that should clear it up.

Flashed Stock, Phone still thinks I'm on a Custom Rom

So I downloaded the stock firmware for my phone to flash via Odin, (The Samsung GS4 M919V), and I just noticed that the phone still thinks i'm on modified software. Is there anyway to fix this? I want to be 100% on stock so I can receive OTA updates...

I'm not longer rooted. I don't see why the flash counter would make my device "modified". On my S3 I had a huge flash counter and when I'd flash stock I was able to install OTA's.

Do you by any chance have a microSd card plugged in? I'd recommend you take it out, reboot and see if you still get the same message. Also delete any rom, root files you may have on your Internal & external SD.

Get Triangle Away and use CF-Auto-Root to root but leave you with stock. Reset the flash counter and use the workaround which delays loading superuser on each startup. That makes your phone report "official". Then factory wipe.

Sorry for the n00b questions. i just moved to S4. I was on S3 and a land where everything just worked

Try this if you haven't already. Use the 'UVUAMDL official' tar and make sure to MD5 the file after downloading.

This is a great tutorial, however, just following this tutorial alone, will restore you to stock with a CUSTOM bootloader status.
Use triangle away to reset the flash counter, once triangle away is finished, it will ask if you wish to reboot to system, or reboot to download mode. Select download mode, then follow that tutorial.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I put my S4 in download mode checked the md5 of the suggested tar file but it failed again

I was able to flash the original original tar file just fine. So I know its not my phone. Maybe I need to wait till the Nexus ROM on the 26th. Can't even get the baseband up

[Q] revert back to "unrooted" phone

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S3 T999L from craigslist and wanted to unlock it to send it overseas. My sister had a T-Mobile account so I had her contact the representative and request it. They said it would happen within 24 hours. Anyway, since I didn't have much time, I rooted it using "Method 1 - The Root66 Way" through Odin in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2370981
Today, T-Mobile gave me an unlock code but when I used it, it didn't work. My guess is that it's because the phone is rooted. Is there a way to go back to it being unrooted so I can use the unlock code?
Thanks in advance
Open SuperSU app and select full unroot. Though I doubt its whats keeping you from getting unlocked. Worth a try though.

Hey Doc,
Thanks for all the guides etc. I was able to fully unroot it but when I try to look for updates, it says that phone has been modified... how does one fix that?
If its stock, factory reset.
Or Odin flash the firmware.

No you must be rooted to use Triangle Away.
Yes there are several options to root and you can just reroot using any one. Shouldn't be any need to wipe anything if you want to use root66 again.

Either Triangle away is not working properly or I'm doing something wrong but I used your 1st method to revert back and unroot using the stock and root file, kernel and recovery files through Odin and used Triangle away at the end. It stated that counter is 0, then I unrooted from SU app and restarted but the counter read 1 after restart.
I'm not sure what's going on.
Make sure you are flashing the stock SECURE Kernel and stock recovery, then TA. Then unroot.
And you may actually want to try running triangle away, reboot download, then if the counter is zero, Odin flash the official firmware.

ok so this time I re-rooted using recovery method and then UNrooted using the recovery method listed by you.
Reboot into CWM or TWRP Recovery
Flash PureStock Rom
Flash the unmodified, Secure UVAMB7 Kernel
Flash Stock UVAMB7 Recovery
Next, if you want to wipe everything but your internal SD Card, Factory Reset before rebooting.
If you want a 100% clean, out of the box type device, reboot Recovery.
This should take you into the stock recovery you just flashed. Now Factory Reset.
Reboot Phone
(Last chance to run Triangle Away!)
Open SuperUser/SuperSU (app)
Find and select the option to Permanantly Unroot.
Reboot
Done!!!

After using TA to reset counter and after unrooting by SU, i restarted and then checked binary counter in downloading mode and it read 1... why is that? so frustrating....
the reason I want to do this is because I have an unlock code but it won't work... there's no other explanation as to why the unlock code from TMOBILE wouldn't work other than this counter issue...
It could be the wrong unlock code. Ive heard of more than a few people having to call back a few times. I was able to unlock with a count of about 8 or so. Granted I wasnt using a code, but I dont see this as being the cause. But to be sure, try this:
Triangle Away. (Close/reopen the apo to make sure it worked) then pull the battery. Reboot directly to download mode. Make sure the counter is 0. Flash the official firmware released yesterday.
No idea why its not working for you. Ive had several confirmations that it did work before. Keep in mind that if you have a custom recovery or kernel, every time you boot up the phone it will retrip the counter to 1. So be careful your not booting up w/ cwm or twrp installed.

[Q] What does RQT_CLOSE mean?

I am at the point where my AT&T Note 2 SGH-i317 either displays the Samsung Note II screen or I can go into the Odin screen. It will not open recovery.
If I try to install CF-Auto-Root-t0lteatt-t0lteatt-samsungsghi317.tar.md5 using Odin, I get the message from the title.
Odin appears to load the factory 4.1 rom but I end up with the same message at the end.
I had successfully restored 4.1 using Odin and then the phone auto updated to 4.3. After that, I followed the instructions for installing Jedi Master but the phone won't restart. I tried to use the same files I got 4.1 back with (this has worked twice before from 4.3) but they will no longer work. Is there anything I can do to get the phone working again?

Which version of odin are you using?
Can you enter stock recovery or only download mode?
If you can get into stock recovery if it says anything about knox then you have the new bootloader, which you should if you updated to 4.3 via an ota update or an odin file. If you have this we can skip a few steps. If you don't, we will basically be starting from the beginning.
Assuming you have the newer bootloader, this is what I need you to do.
Go to teamw.in and download the latest twrp and make sure it's the recovery.img.tar.md5 flash that through odin.
In the mean time start a fresh download of jedi masterx2. When that download finishes make sure you verify the md5 sum. This is key. One digit off and the entire download is bad and you'll end up bootlooping again.
Once you have twrp and a good download of jmx2 boot into twrp. Do a system wipe and then flash the rom.
Let me know how it works. Just be patient and we can get this fixed for you. As long as you can power on you can recover your phone and make it work.

Odin shows the Knox flag, so I assume I am on 4.3.
I cannot find this file, "recovery.img.tar.md5".
The most likely looking file I found was this, but it isn't an md5, "openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-t0lteatt.img.tar".
In fact I find no files with an "md5" extension on that site.
